Wizardry: Labyrinth Of Lost Souls Leaving Japan, Thanks To Xseed

By Spencer . March 20, 2011 . 2:37am

ss11[1]We heard Acquire was trying to license Wizardry: Labyrinth of the Lost Souls late last year. And now they found a North American publisher for their downloadable PlayStation 3 dungeon crawler.

Xseed is bringing Wizardry: Labyrinth of the Lost Souls overseas. The ESRB leaked the news when they described the game’s wine collecting quest.

This is a role-playing game in which players explore maze-like environments and battle fantastical enemies. Players traverse through dungeons and enter into turn-based battles with ghosts, demons, goblins, and zombies—depicted in still images. Players select attacks/spells from a menu screen to use in random attacks against enemies that disappear when defeated. Some enemies are depicted with bloodstained swords or wounds that expose small amounts of red flesh. Players can also access a gallery mode that includes a few partially nude characters (e.g., creatures with exposed buttocks or hair barely covering breasts). One quest prompts players to search for sacramental wine; a reward is offered for every bottle collected. The words ‘a*s’ and ‘bastard’ appear in the dialogue.

In Japan, Wizardry: Labyrinth of the Lost Souls was originally released for PlayStaton Network. Recently, Acquire packaged it and the sequel, Wizardry: Town of the Imprisoned Spirits, on a Blu-ray disc. More screenshots of that title are in this post. While Town of the Imprisoned Spirits has not been announced for an overseas release, Acquire was searching for a publisher at Game Developer’s Conference last month.

WHOA! Awesome! Although, my standards for first person dungeon crawlers are gonna be damn high after playing the fantastic Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. Hope it delivers. Either way, thanks for bringing us another interesting game, Xseed.

    • Guest

Now if only they bring over Malicious

  • Damn Xseed, you’re the best reason for dragging out my PSP aga-…

    Wait, PS3?

That doesn’t sound like any Xseed I know

    • sounds like Xseed is…

      -puts on glasses-

      Exceeding your expectations…

      • and yes…i did just use that old meme

      • Zero_Destiny

XSEED who the Hell do you think you are?!
Aren’t your games the ones that will pierce through the heavens, the Earth, and tomorrow?! What are you doing messing around here?!Listen, XSEED, don’t forget. Believe in yourself. Not you who believes in the fans. Not the fans who believe in you. But believe in the you who believes in yourself!!
Now go forth and take this indrustry by storm. PIERCE THE HEAVENS!!!!!!!!!!!

        • but if the me that belives in myself belives in the fans that belive in the me that belives in myself wouldnt it be a way to to say that i dont belive in myself because i belive in the fans that belive in the me that belives in myself so at the end i dont belive in myself so the fans shouldnt belive in me because i dont belive in the me that belives in them that belives in the me that belives in me?

          • Zero_Destiny

            Wow Logic Fail O_o

    • HarryHodd

I been waiting for XSEED to start bringing some PS3 games.

  • Whoomp

This was a package deal and they got the rights to this as a freebie when they acquired (haha) Akiba’s Trip.

    I hope.

    • Ladius

      That would be simply awesome.

    • Hraesvelgr

Why would they get a better game as a freebie to a lesser game?

      • Whoomp

        Business logic?

  • -stupidmisaligned post-

  • mooncalf

Talk about great news dropping from a clear blue sky. I was only just fooling around with the Japanese demo and wondering why a game with such deep western roots (in name and gameplay) was passed over in the west.

  • Xeahnort

Great news. I wanted this game so bad

  • vall03

yes! Ive always wanted this to get localized! whats more, Ive always wanted a first-person dungeon crawler in HD, will definitely get this! And also, Im hearing hints about Brandish on PSP

    <3 XSEED

    • neo_firenze

Even if Brandish never gets localized, it has very little text and is very playable even if you don’t understand Japanese. I guess it would be nice, but if I had to choose I’d rather have Xseed put more efforts into getting the other two Trails in the Sky games out ASAP then get working on Zero no Kiseki.

  • Since someone’s filling the void that was on the ps3, someone should go and pick up STUDENTS OF THE ROUND and fill the void that remains on the 360. Win/Win.

    • Aoshi00

I was going to say the same thing.. the Students of Round demo was pretty awesome, especially the epic soundtrack.. I don’t think I’m the most patient for this type of game, but I hope they would bring that over.

      • SolidusSnake

Now that’s a game I’d like to see spinning in my 360.

    • Guest

Xseed could just bring over both.

Interesting that a series that originated in the West has taken so long to come back to the West…

  • I guess I could get it. It does look intriguing and will hopefully provide incentive and impetus for the sequel to be released in CONUS.

  • Too bad they didn’t package it with the sequel on blu-ray, but I can fully understand their decision.

  • Hraesvelgr

So bastard is okay, but you have to partially censor ass? Oh you, ESRB.

On a serious note, since it already has an ESRB rating, that makes me think it’ll be out before too long. Well, here’s hoping, anyway.

    • Guest

Oh you said Bastard; that reminds me…someone needs to make a Bastard!! RPG..

  • Omg XSEED is officially the RPG mastars, im so getting this

    • XSEED is? The only XSEED game I have is, ironically, Wild Arms XF. Have I missed anything else?

      • More Falcom games :V

      • Ladius

The Ys series and of course the mighty Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky, out in the USA the 29th of March. You should enter your “day one baby” mode for those games since they’re awesome stuff.

      • Rune Factory Frontier, wildarms 5, wildarms XF ALl THE FALCOM GAMES THEY BRINGING <3… And could little king story be rpg? Well it certainly is a strange but cool mix of a lot.
Errmmm, ragnarok for DS, LUNAR, half minute hero, wizard of oz, valhala nights (1,2 and wii ver.), brave story, dungeon maker, shadow hearts 3, wild arms 4….

        • kupomogli

You could leave Dungeon Maker off that list because despite that the game might look cool on the trailer or pictures, it’s terrible.

You forgot to mention Half Minute Hero and also Retro Game Challenge which included Guadia Quest.

          • Heey, I like Dungeon Maker! Last time I visited Japan, it kept me occupied on the plane ride to and fro AND on all my train rides. It’s pretty much the perfect travel game!

          • Testsubject909

I wouldn’t call it the perfect travel game, but it certainly does pass the time rather well.

But you need to have some architectural interest in you. For example, if you enjoy Sims games and RPGs, then it’s probably right up your alley.

          • Haha, well, every game, no matter if its bad, will always have 1 person that will find it great ;D

And forgot about those D: thanks

        • irzbos

As far as i know Rune Factory Oceans wasn’t announced…you got something to tell us?

          • Ops, i meant frontier, lol, i should had been thinking about that game when i wrote that

        • Ragnarok DS is awful, Both Valhalla Knights games on the PSP are terrible and Brave Story is medicore.

      • Dogi shall wall-crush you for this.

      • Retro Game Challenge

    • godmars

Well, considering that Square threw-away their crown, think its between these guy, Atlus, and Nippon Ichi.

      • Yukito

Level 5 has WKC/Ninokuni and a few others going on as well.

      • Eh, Last Remnant makes me think they still have it. Also I would say Imaggepoch will be contenders when their RPG’s start coming into the west.

  • Icon

the other way of looking at this announcement is xseed believes this will do better business than selling Retro Game Challenge 2… damn, that first one must have really had piss poor sales then. Way to go, gamers.

    • Guest

      That game was awesome too.

    • HarryHodd

Put it on the PSN and I’ll buy it.

  • Zero_Destiny

Alright looks like a MegaTen kind of game(sans the party of demons). I like it. Looking forward to putting massive hours of my life into this game especially if XSEED are giving it to us! :D First-person dungeon crawling here I came.

  • HarryHodd

YES!!!!! I did not think this would ever make it here. So happy!

  • Ladius

Great job as always, XSeed :) I wonder if there’s a chance of this game seeing a br release.

  • godmars

More and more, its been confusing me why there hasn’t PSP level games available for the PS3 via download. Something that’s both lower and higher quality.

  • I’m very happy to see Xseed finally on the PS3, as I only had their PS2 stuff. Looking at this, it looks super-super old school and that interests me. Reminds me of when I’d play Eye of the Beholder on the Sega CD.

  • Haven’t played one of these since Wizardry 5 (or was it 6) on the SNES. I can’t wait to give this game a shot!

    • Testsubject909

My last Wizardry was on the PS2. This news is pretty damn happy news to me.

      • cj_iwakura

It was also the last one we got. Japan’s been churning them out like crazy.

  • KyoyaHibari

Tried the demo, it was confusing and boring :/

  • shion16

    Wizardry will never die!!
Games dont play you, you play games!

  • I’m glad to see that Japan is keeping Wizardry’s legacy alive. Also, @XSEEDgames, thanks for bringing this over and showing us some 1st person, old school RPG love.

  • Phoenix_Apollo

Perhaps we’ll see this and the sequel on Bluray if this game does well?

  • Darren M

More thumbs up for Xseed! These guys are probably my new favourite localization company…especially now that Atlus has pretty much abandoned the scene and only does their own games.

I love the art, music, and atmosphere of the Japanese Wizardy games, but they’re so frustratingly difficult…guess they wouldn’t really be a Wizardry game otherwise though.

  • I downloaded this Wizardry game for free (think it was a demo) and tried to play it. It isn’t the type of game for me. I managed to get to the dungeon and got seriously lost in there, couldn’t find a map at all.
For dungeon crawler fans, this game will be great.

    • Ereek

Yeah, these dungeon crawlers definitely aren’t everyones cup of tea. EO is more popular because it’s easier and more accessible than a traditional Wizardy game. That and it has the cute little anime-style going for it while modern Wizardry is more dark and subdued.

The original Wizardry titles were basically “Fanservice: The Game.” They were cruel and harsh, but they were also funny with tons of pop culture references. Now that Japan owns the IP, they’ve lost the humor, most likely due to bad localizations (for the Japanese version, not the western version). Hopefully XSEED can bring it back.

I can completely understand why someone would hate the genre, but I think it’s one of my favorites.

      • Guest

The only thing that annoys me is the handheld Nintendo DS versions have a better framerate!

    • HarryHodd

The game has a map. Here is a clip from the game and a map pops up near the beginning:

  • Rollersnake

Yessss! I’ve been wanting more of the Japan-exclusive Wizardry games for ages.

  • Oh HELL yes!!! In for one.

  • I…I am not worthy, XSEED. Ys, Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky and now this? You sure know how to spoil a guy.

    • Testsubject909

Maybe you’re not worthy, but would you REALLY want them to stop spoiling you?

  • Ereek

    Oh my god.

There are no words to express my happiness.

  • MrRobbyM

    Will definitely get this.

  • I love this news so much it makes me want to jump out the window, go back inside the building and jump out again.

Thank you, Xseed. I was/am very much looking forward to this!

  • Exkaiser

As M. Bison would say: This is delicious!

  • Jirin

Strong potential here, depending on how the combat is balanced.

  • Yukito

Thank you Xseed! This is only one, right? Not the other one as well?

  • john411

They should license Exp’s game, Students of the Round instead, it looks a lot more interesting than this Wizardry clone.

    • Hraesvelgr

How can a Wizardry game be a “clone”?

    • Guest

eh..Student’s of the Round is the Wizardry clone. Just like Etrian Odyssey, Elminage, Class of Heroes etc. But I agree it looks like it has a more engaging story presentation..

Maybe they should bring over PSP’s Legend of the Legendary Heroes which is based on the Anime/Manga

  • cj_iwakura

    You have my sword.

  • Manonam

While I want to be excited, I can’t express how much I hate Wizardy…I mean really HATE! The battle system and difficulty are horrendous in all of these games. But it’s nice to see some of these games making it out of Japan even if I won’t buy them.

  • PrinceHeir

hope they include the PS1 game as well :D

  • Well this should keep the Demon’s Souls crowd happy.

  • Darkrise

YES! Students of the Round next!?

  • regreto

yay! i have been waiting for this!
    thanks xseed <3

  • what is the difference between Wizardry (JPN) and Wizardy (US)? … I thought that this two games were the same … until now

  • I already played through the Japanese version a while back and now I’m working on Scenario 1 of Town of the Imprisoned Spirits (or Ghost Town, whatever). All I can say is..have fun trying to Platinum this game when it comes in the US. I’m willing to bet if 100 people here download it (I mean on this site, not the US in general), only 2 of them will Platinum it.

It will make any other game’s Platinum requirements look like child’s play, trust me.

EDIT: Oh and also have fun trying to roll a ninja, heh. It literally took me 2 hours before the game finally decided to give me a high enough bonus to create one (just to put this into perspective for the D&D geeks around here..you need 15 in every stat!). I can’t even imagine how long it would take in the sequel since they’re even MORE stingy with the bonus points in that game when rolling a character (a shame too since there are new classes).

  • Man I would soooo buy this… if it was on disc… and on the Xbox 360.
