It’s The End Of Mega Man Universe

By Spencer . March 31, 2011 . 12:58am

mmuMega Man Universe was Capcom’s create your own Mega Man game. Similar to Mega Man Powered Up, players could design and share levels for other Mega Man fans to download. Mega Man could be customized too by equipping parts and it was even possible to play as Bad Box Art Mega Man, the yellow dude with a crude gun on the North American Mega Man 1 cover, in this game.

Capcom brought a playable build to New York Comic-Con last year and planned to release the game this spring for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. They even set up a tie-in with Gachapin, a kid-friendly mascot in Japan.

All of this work… led to a cancelation. Capcom announced the news today citing "various reasons" for halting development on Mega Man Universe. Here’s a look at the game with three different Mega Man leaping through trap filled stages.

  • wow, they really hyped this for months…

  • When I first saw this, I thought this was about Megaman Legends 3. Even though I’ve never played a Megaman game and probably won’t ever play them, I would have been super disappointed if that game went down. It represented so much.

But anyway, it’s sad, considering there was so much work done for this. I wonder what those ‘various reasons’ were.

Must be a new trend coming.

“Hey guys, let’s make a first person shooter!”
“Nah, that’s so yesterday. I have a better idea! Let’s cancel a HD game!”

    • Shuryou

“But we don’t have any HD game around!”
“Then let’s just cancel Megaman Universe!”

      • “What?! Fans are gonna be pissed?”
“I got an idea! Let’s get Neowiz to release Megaman Online!”

    • PrinceHeir

“oh don’t worry not only were cancelling this game, but let’s give our other IP’s to other companies! that way we save money, time, and fans can blame them if the game sucks.”

Sir you are a Genuis!!!!!! :D

  • maxchain

I’d bet you money that one of the reasons was “the entire Internet will throw a tantrum because it’s not 2, 9, or a Legends game.”

    • Technically it was 2- it started life as Mega Man Powered Up 2 and expanded from there.

  • While I absolutely love Mega Man, I never really liked the direction this was going in nor the graphical style chosen. I would have preferred a graphical upgrade while keeping the classic Mega Man game play and a proper story. If I wanted to play Mega Man 2, I would play Mega Man 2! I consider the graphics in Universe to be a downgrade compared to the SNES games and the Zero series, and while they attempt to capture the 8-bit style (my impression anyway) in updated graphics, I just think they missed the mark completely.

I am still looking forward to Mega Man Legends 3.

    • Maxwell3000

I wish Legends 3 could be on PSP…you know considering the others were on PS consoles. oh well, I’ll get over it.

  • Shuryou

Wait, what about that ‘other’ Megaman online game based on Megaman X?

And honestly, I cannot say I’m surprised. This looked so horrible. It was hardly online as well.

    • the mega man mmo is still going on its just that it will only be released in s korea

  • JustaGenericUser

And the Japan disaster claims another videogame victim.

  • Testsubject909

    Oh for FUCK’S sake…

  • joesz

    Mega Duty..Please don’t happen.

  • Next game to be canceled/halted, Megaman Legend 3.

  • “various reasons” = “Well without Keiji Inafune, we kind of don’t know what to do with Mega Man”

This better not prevent Mega Man online coming to the west -_-

    • Nah. The fact that Mega Man Online was only intended for the Korean market and never announced for anywhere else will prevent it from coming to the west.

    • Let’s be honest and say that even with Inafune they didn’t know what to do with Mega Man a lot of times. Or rather, they knew what to do but not when to STOP doing it.

      • It just seems like without Inafune they seem to be going “well…what now”. I suppose they could just keep pumping out Mega Man Network games.

Hopefully Mega Man Legends 3 will prove me wrong.

  • Natat

And they hyped it so much ,too…

  • Code

    rar, well that was disappointing omo;

  • Well, with Inafune gone, it just seems like the right thing to do. I wish Konami had done the same with the Silent Hill games once Team Silent was disbanded. While Capcom are canceling titles, they may want to take a look at DMC.

    • MrSirFeatherFang

At least we have inticreates available to make a platform megaman game, right? Unless they don’t feel like it and only want to make games like Gal Gun, which is ok with me… lol jk but I don’t know the people who actually work on the megaman games and if Capcom decides to not internally develop one I am hoping they offer it to inticreates and not some other dev, especially a western one, not to be biased though. A western dev given a japanese IP hasn’t done so well so far…

    • puchinri

If this was Legends, that would make a little more sense to me. Inafune has played a large and larger plot in Megaman over time, but he isn’t the creator of Legends only? I think saying anything else Mega Man can’t work without him downplays what the rest of the team does (although they are relying on the public a lot with MML3). But really, I think DmC should have been cancelled before Universe. I guess it goes to show how backwards things are right now.

  • Don’t be too disappointed. I played this at NYCC and it didn’t really grab me at all. The art direction was very ugly too; everything was rendered with 3D graphics, but they tried to make it look like NES games with awful palettes.

    • Ladius

Yeah, as much as it pains me to say this MU was really awful to behold.

  • LastFootnote

Is it just me, or have a very large number of games been canceled over the last few weeks?

  • Zero_Destiny

    BS!!! >W< Argh :( I was so looking forward to this game. My dream of finally getting to play as that crazy old guy with a pistol from the first US boxart is crushed. ;_;

  • eliel

i was looking forward to this but oh well… dose anyone know about that other mega-man mmo with the X series?(i remember seein a clip on this site)

    • Yes, we reported about that, but that game is designed primarily for South Korea. Rockman Online doesn’t have a planned release anywhere else yet.

  • Next is megaman legends 3…?! IS THE WORLD ENDING SOON AND NOBODY TOLD ME!?

  • eilegz

and capcom keeps messing up in everything other than monster hunter and fighting games… They should rehire many of those talents that left them… Its sad to see this game go away and i dont think that this would happen if inafune its there…

  • Hmmm.. Isn’t it April 1st in Japan right now?

  • Reitsumi

I wanted to play as Bad Box Art Mega Man D:

  • Let me repeat what I previously said on Twitter: nice job forsaking your creation, Inafune! >.>

  • Exkaiser

Can’t say I’m sad to see this one go- didn’t really look that interesting to me.

If something had to go, better Universe than Legends 3.

  • This is the end of Megaman Series… Damn you Crapcom…

  • PrinceHeir

now make another Megaman X or Megaman Zero like game. with X5-X6 soundtrack and all will be forgiven

  • AdamBoy64

When they woke up to themselves and realised how damn stupid the art style was and realised it was beyond redemption, they gave up.

  • darkfox1

    inb4 A April Fools Joke

    • AdamBoy64

I guess it could have been a April fools joke a day early. (Their press release was on the 31st)
