The Making Of An Armored Core V Mech

From Software has been developing mecha battling games since the PsOne was in its heyday. Now, the studio is working on Armored Core V and they shared a few pieces of concept art from the title.

 

While drawing a pair of robot legs, one artist highlighted the knee armor.

Each set of robot arms differs from the stock part and are effective at different points in the game.

What should we put in those hands? How about a railgun? The top sketch is a standard railgun while the bottom picture is a modified version. Notice the extra wires and canister on the bottom?

Armored Core V has plenty of other weapons including laser rifles and laser blades.

Once you have all of the parts in place (and a few dozen textures later), Armored Core V turns into this.

Armored Core V is coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this year in Japan. Namco Bandai will publish Armored Core V overseas and have the game slated as an early 2012 title.

    It looks awesome and all, and I can’t wait for the release, but can someone tell me why they decided to get rid of the light to middle weight parts and just have the clunky big mechs in 5? At least I haven’t seen a more slim one yet..

      “I felt that with the previous game, Armored Core: for Answer, we had gone as far as we could with the “speed” concept. Being able to present a new kind of mech hero in for Answer was a rewarding experience, but if we kept on pursuing speed, then the gameplay would start to falter in spots — most players simply wouldn’t be able to keep up with mach-5 combat. So this time we want to retain the core aspects of what makes the series interesting — and that includes speed — and also present some new concepts that diverge from the past.

      We’re going for the sort of violent action that only mechs can deliver. I want to see the sort of hero that could be born from these powerful, violent machines.

      Up to now, the battles were centered around how well you could dodge your opponent’s attacks while firing away and gradually whittling down his AP. That’s fun, of course, but once one side has an AP advantage over the other, it became difficult to come back from that. This system dramatically changes that battle balance.

      The stages are going to be a lot more complex and less flat and there will be a great deal more detail applied to them. We want players to experience a you-are-there feel that wasn’t around before.”

    Know its either not going to happen or happen poorly, but I want to see AC virtual items and spaces in Home. Virtual models with modular parts. A garage/hanger space that has your lead in-game mech on display in 1-1 scale.

    The Xbox people could get a virtual RC model and hanger backgrounds. Avatar clothing.

    I love explosions and partical effects. How did I miss this game, it reminds me of the epicness that is Michael Bay’s phenomenal Transformers film franchise, except without the annoying Megan Fox and the awesome Shia,

      Well, one thing Armored Core has when it comes to females is that in every game, you have a female navigator. Except they fail in comparison to For Answer’s navi. :)

    Plasma chainsaws? It’s so absurd that it’s awesome.

      I suspect that plasma chainsaws are a bit more practical than they sound. After all, the vents need to be cooled down at some point, elsewise they’ll melt. Shutting them down and rotating them into the weapon housing sounds like a reasonable way to do that. Same principle as the gatling gun.

      Although, now that I think about it, a gatling plasma blade would probably achieve the same effect, only more effectively and with fewer moving parts.

      Can’t wait for this to be out!

Seriously really liking what I’m seeing in ACV though, I love the move back to grounded gameplay — after being unable to play the last few games without heavy motion sickness, the move to a move grounded tactical type gameplay is so appreciated >w<;
