Ragnarok Online’s World Comes To PSP As A Strategy RPG

By Spencer . April 19, 2011 . 8:03pm

imageGungho is attempting to bring Ragnarok Online offline and on to handhelds again. While their first game was for Nintendo DS, this upcoming Ragnarok game is for PSP.

Famitsu has the first look at Ragnarok: The Imperial Princess of Light and Dark, a game based in the world of Ragnarok Online. Torene (a warrior draped in leather armor), Cynthia, and Adelaide (she looks like a princess) are introduced in the magazine.

Ragnarok: The Imperial Princess of Light and Darkness is being designed as a strategy RPG, which is quite different from the online RPG. Apollosoft, a studio with ex-Flight Plan staff and creators of Blue Roses: The Fairy and the Blue Eyed Warriors, along with Chime are developing Ragnarok.

  • I am pinged so hard by this. I love me some Ragnarok Online. And I love some SRPG too.

If it has a similar stat system to RO as well (in which you allocate stats and then upgrade to a specific class later to take advantage of what build you’ve gone for), this will be a dream come true.

  • omg can someone please put this series to sleep already?
Make a part II or something and begone!

Anyways, place your bets, is it going to re-re-use the same graphics?

    • There is actually a part 2 of the game, Ragnarok Online 2, but it’s still in the beta stages right now. There was actually a version of it in existence before then since like, 2006 in terms of testing stage, but it was pretty unpopular so they scrapped it and are remaking things.

The few blurry game screens in the picture for the magazine actually make it looks anything but the original RO in terms of graphic. Too blurry to tell, though. (TBH, the game doesn’t feel RO because of that.) Supposedly they’ll officially announce it on April 21 so we’ll see.

I would have much rather had a PSP version of the original Ragnarok Online. The PSP could have handled it I’m sure. Whether or not it had infrastructure wouldn’t have mattered since there’s always ad-hoc party.

However, this also works. Maybe it could be semi real time strategy RPG? Maybe with the Ragnarok Online world itself and the ability to control multiple characters all at once. Like Dragon Age you could control all the characters as the player. That way you don’t need to be on the same time your friends are on. You can bring your group of members with you. There was a MMO like this where you could use three characters at once. Sword of the New World. Was by the creators of Ragnarok Online I think.

Probably going to be a regular tactical RPG though.

  • Just don’t screw it up like what happened on the DS…

    • This game will have different devs from RODS.
Apollosoft/Flight Plan are most adept at developing SRPGs, so I’m not too worried about the quality of this title.

  • color me interested

I still have an account in a private server… but I haven’t played in almost six months or so, Dissidia and Ghost of Sparta are to blame. Now this would be really interesting if they bring it to the west, even though I’m not much into strategy rpgs.

    (‘.’ /) wants iteh~

Meh, I’d much rather have French-Bread’s RBO on a handheld.

    • ^this.
      Oh god this.
With 3 player wifi co-op of course

  • Draparde

I wish the interesting manga would continue someday, however im always interested in SRPGs so consider my interest piqued!… interestingly!

  • I was a rather big fan of Ragnarok back in the day. In light of this endeavour, I’ll bite.

  • If it plays like Disgaea but with ragnarok classes and skills, sign me up.

  • PSP Ragnarok Online??

  • PSP Ragnarok Online??

  • 128bitigor

I would pay a lot to play Maple Story offline on PSP… actually, any mmorpg offline on PSP would sound great for me

BTW, Is it not another title that will never see western release? Bummer.

  • TenRX

Now I wanna play RO again (in my PSP)
