New Guilty Gear? Creator Daisuke Ishiwatari Says It Will Happen "Eventually"

By Spencer . May 2, 2011 . 5:32pm

imageBlazBlue has been a huge hit for Arc System Works, but what about their flagship fighting series Guilty Gear? Daisuke Ishiwatari, creator of Guilty Gear, tells Siliconera he visited Europe to attend the World Game Cup at Cannes and the Arc System Clash in London. Guilty Gear tournaments were held at both events and Ishiwatari was glad to see fans were still passionate about the series.

So, how about a new Guilty Gear then? I asked Ishiwatari that question during an interview. "Let’s just say that you won’t be disappointed," Ishiwatari replied. "When that new Guilty Gear will come? I honestly don’t know – not because I can’t tell you, but because I really don’t know – but it will happen eventually!"

That statement is not counting Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus, which Europe will get on PSP and Wii this Friday. We’ll have more from Ishiwatari on Guilty Gear, Arcana Heart 3, and BlazBlue throughout the week.

  • Wait Arcana Heart is also from these guys? Sweet.

    • puchinri

I think they’re only the publishers in Japan, and of the third title only I think. (Examu is the developer.)

      • PurpleDoom

Examu makes the arcade versions and outsources console development to third parties – in the case of 3, Arc System Works did it. Granted, the majority of the game is just a port of Examu’s creation, but ASW contributed a couple of new things to the game (I think they used BlazBlue’s netcode, for example.)

        • puchinri

Ah~. That makes sense. Intially I thought they read somewhere that ASW does the whole series, but I knew it wasn’t their property/title, so I got confused and had to look it up. And that’s interesting~.

  • I know myself that it will happen eventually man, but when? xD

Meh, whatever I’m hyped for the next installment before it is even in production!!!
Maybe after BlazBlue3 or whatever a cross fighter GuiltyGear X BlazBlue, but with lots of crossover interactions and a great story mode!!! And lots of Gallery love!! And naturally a great soundtrack, but I think I don’t have to mention that.

  • puchinri

I actually like Guilty Gear more than BlazBlue, and I think plenty of people enjoy one more than the other, so I’m not surprised that plenty of people are still passionate about GG.

I look forward to a new Guilty Gear title!

    • raymk

That goes without saying that just about everyone likes GG more than BlazeBlue. That’s all your going to hear when someone brings up something like this is when are they going to make a new guilty gear or BB sucks I want a new gg. Am I the only one who likes them both that’s the question?

      • puchinri

I don’t know, I always knew more people that liked BlazBlue more, and only lately do I see more people that prefer GG over BB. I don’t see people so polarized over it usually though (to the point that one sucks or whatever). I like them both and plenty do, but I prefer GG. I enjoy the characters more.

        • PurpleDoom

There are plenty of people on Dustloop that strongly dislike BlazBlue (although it seems to me to be more connected to a claim that BlazBlue was Guilty Gear’s “spiritual successor” and not quite delivering on that front.) I personally enjoy both series, but prefer BlazBlue because I like the story more.

          • raymk

Yeah on dustloop and srk. I’m glad there’s a new GG still a go sometime in the future but i’m happy with what i’ve got now. Regardless I hope I can keep up with all these fighters i’m playing lol.

          • puchinri

Ahh. Well even with BB as a spiritual successor, well… From the start, I didn’t want it as one (that would imply GG is dead as a franchise and it simply doesn’t feel right as one to me), so I can relate to those on that note. But as its own thing? I don’t see many people outright disliking or hating BB, but there will always be someone who dislikes a product.

      • Code

Nope, I also agree, I like them both owo; I’m really looking forward to a new GG though. I’m glad he cleared stuff up too, since the last few times he’s been on tape he’s kind of downplayed the notion of a new Guilty Gear.

      • I like both, but for different reasons. GG is definitely much more complex and fun to play (in my case), but I don’t really care about the story (like in almost every fightan game). BB has a pretty entertaining cast of characters with a so-so story (which took me by surprise), and a gameplay that has a long way to go to before it’s as good as GG.

I love them both. Buuuut I would probably like KOF 13 more, if it came to the consoles :p

      • Agreed on pretty much all fronts. It gets kind of annoying that apparently peeps aren’t allowed to like BlazBlue because “ZOMG GUILTY GEAR IS BETTER.”

Don’t get me wrong, Guilty Gear is a hell of a lot more technical and I can agree on it being the superior game, but ffs that doesn’t mean fans have to rub it in other’s faces. I like BlazBlue for different reasons personally.

I guess in summary, yay for more Guilty Gear (been playing since GGX’s US release, so definitely eager for more), tis a good series. But we need loud, annoying, and dumb fantards to accept that both can coexist and to stop being obnoxious. (I know, I’m asking a bit much here)

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I know they published the console version of AH3, but I didn’t know how involved they were!
Also I am excited about all these fighting games coming out. A Guilty Gear in HD and I hope KOF XIII gets an announcement for consoles :)

  • glemtvapen

Oh sweet. They’ll definitely make another 360 Dynasty Warrior-like strategy game.

    That game was tight.

    • Agreed, another more refined one, with more playable character would be great, and please with another great soundtrack like the first one, that was rockin’!

  • PrinceHeir

    well i definitely want a Guilty Gear 3 :D

please include characters from Guilty Gear 2. Sin, Valentine, etc

and finally reveal “That Man” it’s been so long since we last heard of him.

oh god Dizzie, Millia, I-No all in glorious HD? that would be mind blowing O_O

it was actually confirmed that they’ll be making another Blazblue(though this looks like CS II on consoles) since the quote below:

“We’d get booed if it doesn’t release,” BlazBlue director Toshimichi Mori told Eurogamer. “So that means yes. We’re not saying when, but it will be coming out.”

oh and please make a deal with SNK for Guilty Gear vs King of Fighters and vice versa. i want to see KOF characters air dashing and some long strings and aerial combos ^^

    • PurpleDoom

I remember having read that article a while ago, and it sounded to me more like a real 3rd installment. Personally, I’d much rather have that than a console CSII, but that might just be me.

Totally with you on wanting Guilty Gear 3 though.

      • PrinceHeir

        hell yeah :)

    • RagnaXBL

Mori already said on his twitter their not making a new blazblue just yet, that eurogamer article is wrong. All he said was he’d like to make a new blazblue, its more a translation error or something if anything.!/page16

      • PrinceHeir

i see, still i think we already have a fair share of Blazblue to be honest. so bring on Guilty Gear 3 :)

    • axess707

*spoiler alert* That Man is Saya.

  • YsyDoesIt

    More Guilty Gear? Yes, please.

A HD 2D fighter isn’t too much to ask for though, right? I’m sure there’s probably the logic that there’s no place for it considering the success of Blazblue, however, and that makes me sad.

  • papuruka

    Guilty Gear x Blazblue crossover pl0x :)

    • Guest

Hokuto no Ken, Groove on Fight & Sengoku Basara X to PSN please

    • Zefux

      That would be fuggin awesome.

    • Sol vs Ragna

      • papuruka

Or better yet…That Man VS Hazama. Both are massive trolls :DD

  • PurpleDoom

Cool that it’s definitely coming at some point – curious about hearing what else he said, too, as a fan of their fighters in general.

  • Daisuke, you are a god amongst men! Another Guilty Gear is what I’ve been waiting for for a long time. Good to see he still hasn’t forgotten. This is proof, he listens and is one of us!

  • Doesn’t @SEGA now own Guilty Gear, via Sega Sammy? I hope Arc System Works would just outright buy the worldwide rights for Guilty Gear, if that were the case; after all, this is one hurdle to Guilty Gear fans.

    • PurpleDoom

The last couple times he’s been asked he’s hinted towards “yes, there will be another Guilty Gear” (including now, obviously), so I imagine something got worked out between them.

      • Somehow, I picture @SEGA, getting the worldwide publishing rights, while Arc System Works get developer obligation.

        • PurpleDoom

That’s a possibility, though it would be a shame to have Aksys not do it, as they’ve done an excellent job so far.

          • On another note, I hope the new GG would get both a new arcade cab and its home version would get online play, respectively.

    • mikanko

Arc System works has the license now.

      • Just double-checking, but 100% outright ownership of the intellectual property?

        • mikanko

Haha sorry, I’m wrong. I remembered an interview incorrectly. There’s certainly a conflict of who owns what of the IP, but ASW definitely owns parts of it that Sega doesn’t. I don’t think they’re likely to tell us the extent of it.

If things have been worked out between the two though I highly doubt Sega has any intention of wanting to publish it, they don’t even want to publish VF5 for consoles. Arc System Works has published every GG game since Isuka I think.

          • You mean, SEGA owns parts of the roster!? D:

          • mikanko

It’s more likely Sega owns the content of the games, like sprites and such. The actual intellectual property of the characters are probably in Arc Sys’ hands, or contested at the very least, while ASW definitely owns some characters Sega has no claim to. Or so the rumors go. As has been mentioned in interviews within the last year it’s not something they’re allowed to talk about so no way of knowing for sure.

ASW isn’t a super huge dev, so remaking the character roster in an HD game would be a pretty big undertaking, and probably out of the question while they’re actively doing stuff with BlazBlue. Capcom is a much larger dev by comparison and outsource all of the busy work for all of their recent fighting games, which doesn’t seem like a luxury ASW would have.

  • Souji Tendou

Come on Ishiwatari-san, release it quickly please? I need another dose of GG for my gaming health.

  • mikanko

Would love it if they could give us GGAC+ w/ rollback netcode on Xbox Live/PSN while we wait for that “eventually” as it sounds like they’ve yet to start working on anything.

    • Would be interesting to see if ASW would do this. I believe the XX#R PC crowd is still going fairly strong, or have transitioned to ^Core online on PC. (Won’t mention the details for fairly obvious reasons, but google it if interested) For that reason it’s really not like one can say “GG is too precise, online isn’t an option at all”.

Personally I just still want an XBLA / PSN release for the sake of playing local GG period. My PS2 is nigh dead, and when I -can- get it working the lag from it upscaling to an HD TV is pretty god awful. Give me Accent Core that I can run from the dashboard and runs natively in 720 or 1080, and I will be set for life!*

      * : At least as long as my 360 and PS3 will last.

  • cmurph666

Ahh… but eventually isn’t soon enough.

  • I honestly can’t stand anything about BlazBlue. I want the true king back! More Guilty Gear pls

  • So, the dream of a Guilty Gear VS BlazBlue game isn´t dead yet either then?
That would be quite awesome :)

Kysuke VS Jin, Sol VS Ragna and so on.

Great news though. More games to wait on is just great.

  • Hang out at any oldschool hardcore fighting game community for more than a few minutes and you’ll hear all about how awesome GG is and how much BlazBlue “sucks”. Frankly, GG is too hardcore for me. Add in the fact that the #1 complaint GG players seem to have about BB is “balance” when it took GG like 6 games to get that right and it just doesn’t add up.

I’m glad for people that this might someday get made, but I won’t be buying it. Just not interested.

  • I thought ASW was trying to distance itself from the GG franchise since it belongs to Sammy/SEGA?

  • Exand

As long as it’s not just for the Wii or just for handhelds, bring it on!

  • Guilty Gear X Blazblue (Yes, CROSS)
I’d buy it over Tekken x SF any day~

    Can’t wait until…eventually. Eheh.

  • xflame10

well i hope the new guilty gear has the hd sprites of blazblue, that would be pretty epic.

can somebody explain to me why everything i say appears to be being removed? i would appreciate it oh so much <-(irritated)
