7th Dragon 2020 Coming To PSP, But Won’t Look Like The DS Game

By Spencer . May 10, 2011 . 7:39pm

imageSega is continuing their first-person dungeon crawler series 7th Dragon with a PSP game. 7th Dragon 2020 takes place in Tokyo in the year 2020.

7th Dragon had sprite graphics from mota. 7th Dragon 2020 has a different artist and super-deformed polygon models.

7th Dragon 2020 is slated for release in Japan this fall.

OMFGGGGGGGGGGG AHHHHH!!! IF THERE ARE STILL TOWNS AND AND PEOPLE TO TALK TO AND AND AWESOMENESS AND AND AHHHHHHHHH!!!!

If they mantain the classic stuff from the DS game, it will be awesome, and i can already imagine the 3D chibi characters running around xD

    • xXDGFXx

      chibis always win!

  • Phlo

I shouldn’t get my hopes up about getting this one either…

So true, i was waiting for the DS game…and we now what happened :(

      • lostinblue

        I’m still waiting :(

    So everything’s high tech-ish? Neat.

Well, looks like I’m importing the sequel, too.

In hindsight, the fact we didn’t get the DS version felt like a low blow. Now, I feel the only reason why this game has a sliver of chance for a US release is because of the super-deformed polygon chars, which in SCEA’s book, “OBVIOUSLY NOT 2D”. xD

Am I the only fig nut who came in here expecting a Sealab crossover?

  • Pichi

Sega is like Namco to me when it comes to these things. Not enough Tales, from Sega, not enough of their RPGs and stuff.

  • IsaacGravity

*tries to calm self but can’t* YES YES YEEESSSS!!! A new 7th Dragon!! All this good news coming out these days! Makes me happy I’m mostly a portable gamer!

Oh and for everyone who hasn’t already, I suggest you import the DS game. There’s even a best price version out and there’s a nice wiki for the bits you have a hard time getting. There are certain things that it doesn’t cover (and kanji hurts) but you can check the jp wikis or just use the carryover knowledge of playing OTHER RPGs to carry you.

7th Dragon is an awesome game one of the best titles on the DS as far as I’m concerned you shouldn’t let the “No export for you!”/not in a language you fully get card stop you from playing great games. I highly recommend it!

Hmm. Maybe I will. I finally have a Kanji dictionary, so even if takes minutes to translate a few sentences, at least I can proceed WITH understanding. Gotta start learning somewhere, right? ^_^

      • Extra_Life

It was importing a game (I thought would remain forever in Japan only) that started me learning it :)

7th Dragon was really playable without a huge amount of knowledge of Japanese (at the time I could only read Katakana), but I would understand that many people would want the full picture rather than just the essentials.

I see. My very first Japanese import that had me tackle a lot of Kanji was Tales of Vesperia (PS3). (Blessings to the developers; it was amazing.)

I’ve already started a Japanese course a couple of months before I bought ToV, but at that point, I’ve only finished Kana. And I didn’t have a Kanji dictionary then, so translating was really tedious. Even understanding a cutscene takes a lot of brain-work. Thankfully, there are already FAQs in English by then (for both versions), so when I don’t understand a Kanji in an item name, I cross-checked in English. Worked pretty well.

    Looks cute, but since it’s:
    a. a PSP game
    b. an RPG
    c. a sequel to a game that never hit the west
I’m a bit skeptical that we’ll get a US release (from Sega at least)

  • godmars

Is it wrong to want, especially considering the state of JRPGs on the system, to want PSP level titles on the PS3?

  • Advent_Andaryu

I want the original 7th Dragon game on PSP.

    - Reserving final judgement until better images come out, but the art so far makes me wish they re-hired mota.
    - Again reserving final judgement for better images…but polygons.
    - If the first couldn’t make it, there’s no way this’ll be released in English.

Negative Nancy-ing out of the way, I’m still interested and maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised by everything. But this isn’t quite the sequel I would have expected/hoped for.

…Just FYI, Spencer—7th Dragon is 3rd person aside from the battles.

    * Producer – Kodama Rieko, Director – Niinou Kazuya, Sound – Koshiro Yuzo (YES), Character designer – Miwa Shirou
    * Confirmed classes from source: Samurai, Trickster, Destroyer, Psychic, Hacker
    * Can alter character appearance AND voice
    * Expect skills and classes to be significantly different
    * Flowaro is coming back, random encouters are back
    * Dragons as symbol (FOE-style) encounters are coming back
    * You are a part of the anti-Dragon brigade, Murakumo, in 2020 AD Tokyo

… Sounds OK to me. Except maybe that last part. We’ll see?

Well never played the DS one since it didn’t came outside of Japan but this looks pretty cool. Probably won’t come outside of Japan either through.

  • thebanditking
