Monster World IV, A Japan-Only Genesis Game, Is Coming To The West… In English!

By Spencer . May 12, 2011 . 12:26pm

Monster-World-TitleSega is localizing a seventeen year old Sega Genesis game for Wii and PlayStation 3. Released back in 1994, Monster World IV continues the Wonder Boy series with a new protagonist. While many Monster World games were localized, Sega skipped this one.

But, Monster World IV will be released in English soon! Following the ESRB listing Siliconera dug up, Sega announced they are working on an English version of Monster World IV. It’s rare to see publishers dig into ROMs and localize Japan-only classics. Kudos to Sega for taking on the challenge.

Monster World IV is part of the next set of Sega Vintage collection titles. Wonder Boy in Monster Land (arcade version), Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis), Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis), and Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Master System) are also on deck for release. All of these titles will be available on PlayStation Network and Virtual Console between late 2011 and early 2012.

Hmm… that’s interesting. The ESRB rating notes Monster World IV is for Xbox 360 too, but Sega makes no mention of it in their announcement.

Yay PS3 wins over 360 for once! :D

    • More like a pity release for the US PS3, if anything. :p

  • This is a beautiful game, one of the best. Thank you so much for translating this SEGA.

  • Pichi

This is what I want to see more of. Companies releasing games they passed over so long ago. I have to give Sega thanks on this.

  • Zefiro Torna

The Sega blog entry also mentions Super Hang-On in one paragraph, but not on the list with the rest. The arcade version got released on the Japanese VC last year, so it seems to be on its way.

  • It’s heartening to see that not every company has lost the source code to their old classics, and even better to see those games being brought to new audiences.

FFFFFF am I the only one having serious issues with Disqus’s formatting ever since the whole “mention” betatesting started? :(

I will support. A game back in the glorious days of platforming games? Oh yeah, if this supports more games to get this treatment, I will totally dig in.

  • pretty neat that they are doing this, good job sega.

  • SetzerGabbiani

I like this. Very much. Will support on VC/WiiWare, definitely. This kind of thing is going to open the floodgates to other requests from other companies. SquareEnix, I’m looking at you *cough* Seiken Densetsu 3 *cough*.

  • HOORAY! >:3 Thanks for going the extra mile, @SEGA.

PS: Go for the Holy Grail, #SakuraTaisen!

I hope this is the start of a new trend

    • Exkaiser

      Yes. A million times, yes.

  • thaKingRocka

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t they, for whatever reason, translate this game into English on the Japanese PS2 Sega Ages Wonder Boy?

    • No, though that would have been very awesome.

  • puchinri

So this kind of thing does happen~. That gives me hope.
Maybe we can see Napple Tale one day? ♥

  • Very, very interesting. It’s worth noting that SEGA is in a unique position to do this, though, being both the game’s developer AND the manufacturer of the original console, so they *would* still have both the original code and the development environment in which to change it. I wouldn’t expect to see this from many other companies.

  • damn sega you guys are on a roll

my 27 year old brother is excited for this he loved wonder boy in monster world !

    Now how about Astal ?

  • mikanko

If this is as good as the PS2 port on Monster World Collection I will buy it.

  • TrevHead

I hope MW4 comes to the 360 as I dont wanna miss this so it looks like im gonna have to use other ways to play this on the PC

  • Joanna

Never played any of the other games but the game looks interesting and I must support this endeavour because I would like to see others follow suit!
