Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 Innocent Sin Set For September?

By Spencer . May 27, 2011 . 5:31pm

imageYes, Persona 2 Innocent Sin is finally coming to North America with bonus quests in the Climax Theater under the slightly longer name Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 Innocent Sin.

When? Atlus narrowed down the PSP release window to fall, but that’s still kind of vague. Especially because retailers peg Persona 2 Innocent Sin for September. Scanning a handful of retailers, it looks like Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 Innocent Sin will be in stores the week of September 20.

Catherine was released in Japan this past February and will be available in North America in July. That’s a five month gap between regions. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 Innocent Sin will follow a similar timeframe, if the September release is on the mark, since Japan got the PSP version in April.

Looks like they plan to go head-to-head with NISA for September sales.

Persona rocks, but perhaps not the best plan to put it up against Disgaea 4 and Atelier Totori!

    • Hraesvelgr

I’d say the only thing it has going against it is that it’s a PSP game. Aside from that, Persona/Shin Megami Tensei is more of a known name than Disgaea or the Atelier series.

      • Jrpgfanatic

As far as brand recognition I’ll give you Atelier, but Disgaea… hard to say.

        • OneOkami

I think at this point Persona is more recognizable than Disgaea.  Disgaea is arguably still relatively niche.  I think Persona is moving beyond that status.

        • malek86

At this point, Persona is probably more popular over here. In fact, it’s become popular enough that Atlus seems to have almost changed their namehold franchise from SMT to Persona, much to my chagrin (I’m not really a fan).

Still, being a PSP game won’t help it a bit, so D4 should sell more.

          • I think the phrase should be P4 is more popular. Really doubt many people moved beyond P4 in the series truth be told…especially if P4 has almost 3 times mores sales than many other entries in Persona…

    • I’d argue that Persona or the SMT series in general has quite a bit more clout in the States than Atelier. Disgaea is a little harder to say, but I think on the whole the SMT games seem to do better business. I have no numbers or proof, quite honestly. It just seems that way.

And yeah, I think Persona has slowly been creeping its way out of the super niche market over the years.

      • Bakuryukun

Yeah it’s very true, Persona is becoming a more household name over here as time goes on. I know people who don’t like RPG’s but like the Persona series now.

        • A household name? Thats a vast exaggeration. I dont think people know of the “Persona series” as how many people were introduced to Persona only years after the fact and only at P4 with none going to P3P or P1P? Whereas Disgaea series has more merchandise, more of a legacy, lasting. Neither are at household name status…if we are serious.

  • imaguni

Ah, just like P1, cool! And close to my birthday. :D

  • September, I would have liked August. Resistance 3, Disgaea 4 Super Special Awesome Edition and P2P and not to mention those ultracool $99.99 Official PS3 Wireless 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound Headphones is also September. Thats going to be one awesome month for me.

          Unlimited Pockets. =/

    • OneOkami

Devil Survivor Overclocked comes out in August.  They need to spread ’em out at least a little bit.

      • August is plenty for me as well too (Bleach Soul Resurreccion, SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked, Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights), gah, October would have been better.  I will have to do double duty in playing and getting through all these games before the next games come out.

      • Shadow_Raskolnik

The date is still up in the air though, there is no official word on the release date for Devil Survivor Overclocked.

        • OneOkami

True, there is no official word.  I was basing that on the fact that Amazon has a specific August date for it and is offering release date delivery on it (something they don’t usually do until they’re confident in the date).

  • puchinri

That would be way schway. I was kind of considering getting a PSP with a new phone as a gift from someone but got iffy, but maybe I *need* the PSP now after all.

    • schway?

      • puchinri

Yeah, like cool, awesome, the greatest thing ever (in this case).

  • hitosura22

so when do they plan to make an actual new SMT game like Nocturne or Digital devil saga? im honestly tired of all these remakes and ports and persona games. i want a new SMT game thats on an HD console T_T

    • Exkaiser

Strange Journey just came out two years ago [in Japan]. In fact, it came out after the last new Persona game, so I don’t really see the issue.

It really has not been that long a wait.

Meanwhile, Devil Survivor 2 is coming out this year, and that’s about as much of an “actual” SMT as DDS.

      • hitosura22

*sigh* i guess your right. but i do want a SMT game on an HD console that isnt know with actual good graphics. Nocturne and DDS graphics are much better then P3 and P4 and thats obvious as day.. ah well one can only dream lol

        • Apollonis

          It really isn’t…

        • OneOkami

I wouldn’t really say Noctune and DDS’ graphics are “better”.  They just have different art styles.  I think the most obvious difference is Kaneko vs Soejima. I think both are great (though I personally have a preference for Soejima’s style)

          • hitosura22

P3 and P4 the character models dont dont have much facial expressions or animations unlike DDS. and as good as P3 and P4 are. i like the darker atmosphere just a bit more.

        • Exkaiser

What are you talking about? Nocturne through Raidou 2 use pretty much the same graphics. All the demon models are identical, for example. The only difference is in the style (P3 and 4’s human characters are slightly deformed, for example). If there’s any game that Nocturne looks obviously better than, it’s Raidou 1.

And, well, it’s not like there’s even a Persona game on an HD console- nor is it like SMT games ever push consoles to their limits, graphics-wise.

I mean, it’s a pretty safe bet that the first PS3 megaten game is going to jack Nocturne’s models again.

          • hitosura22

same graphics? really? hmmm isnt nocturne and digital devil saga cell shaded tho? and dont they actually have good facial expressions? and much more animations then P3 and P4? they dont really have a facial expression because i do like those games i just prefer that style. and yeah raidou 1s graphics werent too well but i did like the atmosphere. well like i said im just hoping for a HD SMT game. im not too much of a big fan of handheld games.

          • Exkaiser

They’re not cel-shaded, they just have a different shader applied.

DDS might have more animations than P3-4, maybe, but Nocturne has less- all the demon animations are the same, but there’s only one human character. As for facial animations, sure, but at the same time the Persona games rely on Soejima art for expressions.

    • OneOkami

Digital Devil Saga is an SMT spinoff just like Persona.  The last true SMT game was Strange Journey which, like Exkaiser said, was less than two years ago.

I personally don’t mind, its not like Atlus hasn’t been making (IMO) great games otherwise.  I love DDS, Devil Survivor, Persona, Trauma *, Radiant Historia, Devil Summoner 2 and Catherine.  Atlus Japan has been kicking arse, even if it hasn’t been through traditional installments of their flagship series.

      • hitosura22

thing is with DDS is that well theres only 2 and they follow eachother. while persona theres about 10 of them with all the ports and mobile games and stuff…well mostly for P3 which was everywhere. im not saying i do not like the Persona. its just i wish they would finally work on a HD SMT. the ps3 has been out too long for there too not be one. or announced atleast.

  • Zonic505

Sept. 20th? That’s the day before my b-day! Well, I know what I’ll be getting w/ my birthday money.

  • PrinceHeir

probably one of the last great PSP games coming out(well they could remake Eternal Punishment here or NGP) after that it’s NGP from now on ^^

    thank you atlus :P

    • Whoomp

Along with the 2 other parts of Trails in the Sky which is bound to be released… sometime? I really hope E3 will be generous with announcements about NGP games other than “insert big selling PS3 title here” Portable.

      • PrinceHeir

        i forgotten about that ^^

and yes we need more original titles like Patapon and maybe enhanced remakes of games like FFV and FFVI. the rest should be original :P

  • PersonaBull

    September 19th is my birthday.

    Happy Birthday to me~<3

  • Can’t wait for this :3 <3

    • AnimusVox

Same. This is my favorite Persona in the series.

  • Can’t wait to battle Hitler.

  • yeah, gamestop lists it as 9/20 and so does amazon(CAN/US for each)

  • BelmontHeir

I will be getting this for sure but right now I’m slogging through the Persona 1 remake and the game design is pretty dated. Hopefully Innocent Sin is an improvement in most ways.

    • Dated? I found that it feels pretty awesome and unique. What is dated?

      • BelmontHeir

Eh, mostly the things that they didn’t really update in the remake: clunky movement in dungeons, the pretty shoddy teenage dialogue. The fact that you constantly have to grind and keep everyone at a close level if you want to be able to get Persona’s cards. Also, I kind of preferred they would have kept the original soundtrack; the new, more J-pop tunes just don’t fit the game.

I’m not saying it’s bad, it’s just kind of hard to play through compared to other games in the series (for me). But it is 15 years old.

        • Ryos

Most people consider the first Persona to be the clunkiest of the bunch.  It’s not just the fact it’s the oldest, it isn’t nearly as well constructed as the later Personas.  I’m sure Persona has its fans though.

  • YsyDoesIt

That’s awesome, a lot sooner than I thought it would come out.  I’m super-excited, too; I tried playing the fan-translation, but it’d always freeze up at the beginning on my PSP.
