Shadow Of The Colossus HD Has Smooth Visuals And A Smooth Framerate

By Spencer . June 9, 2011 . 4:01pm

I played Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection just long enough to climb up the hairy first colossus in the PlayStation 3 game. The start of the game, seeing the wanderer gaze down at the girl lying on the altar, was familiar, but of course sharper since the PlayStation 3 version is in HD.

Oh, and in 3D too.

The 3D effect in Shadow of the Colossus is subtle. You look into the screen rather than seeing giant colossus arms flying at the player. Within an options menu, there is a slider to increase or decrease the amount of 3D. Perhaps, the biggest graphical improvement is the frame rate. Shadows of the Colossus was marred by a choppy framerate, but this re-release is smooth.

Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection will be available on September 27 for $39.99.

  • ONLY $39.99?! Bargain baby! Include trophies and I will do my best to be there day 1. The trailer made it seem so epic with huge colossal epic boss fights, I cant wait to see the sheer awe and size of them, can not wait!

    • Aoshi00

Both games are very epic in their own different way, Ico is more atmospheric and emotional I guess.. I recommend you play them in order though.  W/ the improved framerate, this is just going to be amazing…
Trophies are very nice for SotC since the game alrdy had time trials before, beating the bosses w/in a certain number of minutes… Speaking of such, I still can’t figure out how to beat the first and second bosses w/in 1 or 2 mins in Castlevana Lords of the Shadow for those challenge/achievement :(…

I alrdy pre-ordered this months ago, it’s nice it’s coming out in Sep instead of Dec.. I can’t wait to play both of these games from beginning to end again and get ready for Last Guardian, timeless classic.

I wish to have a 3D TV eventually to take advantage of the 3D visuals… I alrdy have many 3D Pixar/Dreamwork blu-rays waiting to be seen later.. Also it’s good we don’t have that goofy and ugly cover for Ico anymore :)

      • kupomogli

The timer on Lords of Shadows doesn’t start until you first get on the Titan.  You could always change it to easy mode and fight him.  Regardless of how you do it you still get the challenge completion.

        • Aoshi00

Yea, I know the clock doesn’t start until you climb on the titan.. I’ve been playing on normal.. maybe I’ll switch to easy.. there are like 5 or 6 spots you need to destroy and by the time I’m done w/ 2 or 3 the min was alrdy up :(..

Why wouldn’t it include trophies? EVERY retail PS3 game for almost the last two years has had trophies.

      • That PS3 version of Monster Hunter wont have trophies…

        • Do they have that PSP and PS3 save transfer feature built into Monster Hunter? If so, then that’s probably why. I thought I heard somewhere that PSP wasn’t getting trophies due to the ease of hacking and getting illegitimate trophies. They’d probably want to prevent people hacking on the PSP side and boosting PS3 side epeens.

So for that reason, I’d be rather surprised for SotC to not have em.

          • But all games in the MGS HD Collection with Peace Walker are getting trophies and that has transfarring.

  • I wish they were releasing each separately with their original box art (or in North America’s case, the PAL or Japanese art). I know it doesn’t matter to most folks, but that thrown together “bundle” box art for these HD collections is such an eyesore.

Although, high five for at least using the PAL version for that bundle box art.

Anywho, definitely buying this. ICO and SotC with better framerates is the stuff dreams are made of. Just wish we didn’t have to wait for (I assume) TGS to see more of The Last Guardian.

    • mikanko

The Japanese release is the same price for an individual game(making it twice as expensive) and has the original boxart, you’re welcome to import that.  <.<;  I actually debated doing so.

If I get the physical release I'd be tempted to just print out the different boxarts on the same piece of photo paper and have SotC on one side and ICO on the front…

    • Aoshi00

I don’t think the US boxart is that bad, at least we aren’t getting the original US box art :)

Usually I’m very picky w/ cover art too, but I’ll take $40 for 2 games instead of paying for both games at full price separately.  I actually imported Wanda to Kyozou on PS2 before and I have the Ico OST w/ the Jpn cover (plus the upcoming novel in Eng would have the Ico cover as well), so I’m good w/ the US cover.. For No More Heroes Paradise though, I’m getting the Red Zone Ed for the Jpn Sylvia cover :)

  • I want this. Now.

me too but on a side note…what’s stopping Marvelous from bringing over Malicious to U.S. PSN? That game also roks

      • mikanko

If by Marvelous you mean Xseed, I’m guessing they’re just too full from other projects.  Falcom and stuff they get from Marvelous is probably as much as they can handle.  Maybe Aksys or someone could nab it, but it’s looking doubtful. =/

The people who made Malicious said they were hopeful there’d be a localization back in August’ish, but I’m at the point where as soon as the JP store is up again I’ll probably be nabbing it.  ><

  • puchinri

That’s not so far off. I forgot to pre-order (or did I on Amazon…). I’m really looking forward to trying Ico especially.

  • Yamaneko22

Two wonderful games for such a price! Hell yeah!
btw Hopefully the price in Europe will be very good too:)

  • PrinceHeir

finally i can now play ICO after 10 long years!!!!!

    Day 1 for sure :P

  • Saraneth

And yet SOTC looks as colorless as ever. I know it was supposed to be an abandoned country, but it’s hard to enjoy an atmospheric game when the environment is so bland.

    • Suicunesol

I think it’s colorlessness adds to the atmosphere. It’s not a happy game, is it, Kyuubey-chan?

      • Saraneth

No, but they could have kept it colorful and still maintained a melancholy atmosphere by choosing the colors to create the mood well. For example, they could have had the whole game take place at twilight or something.

    • It’s not bland, it suits perfectly with everything, that is how it is supposed to be… It’s not really hard when u get into it

      • Saraneth

I never got used to it, unfortunately. I guess it’s just one of those games that appeal to a small group of people. I never felt all those things that others felt after killing Colossi.

        • Umm, well, there are different tastes in the world, but i dont think it appeal a small group of people xD, considering is getting a HD remastered release, it must had sold very well, and people aclaimed for that to happen too.

  • Day 0

  • Chow

September 27th can’t come soon enough.

  • hush404

Been waiting for a while. Actually promised my PS2 copy of Shadow to my sis once this came out… I assumed it would be out way sooner than this :P

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Though I didn’t like the slow downs a lot in SOTC, it added some strange feeling to the battles… I don’t know how to describe it, but if I want to experience that, I can just play it on the PS2 :)
And I do remember reading this huge paper about just how complex and advance the SOTC engine really was, so the slow downs were fine with me, except for certain parts of battles

    • Exkaiser

I have to agree with that feeling.

Still, a smooth SotC is always cool.

  • SotC and ICO in one package for 40 dollars? That’s beyond a steal for the content those games offer.

    • doomspeller10

If you don’t like those games, just don’t buy the collection.

      • I was under the impression that he was stating that it is a fantastic value for the price.

      • Yeah, Tsuna’s right. It’s an English idiom.

        • doomspeller10

LOL Sorry XDDDDDDDDDD I literally want to delete my previous comment XDDD Worst epic fail ever…

  • mikanko

My first thought is “DAY 1 CAPSLOCKS OMFGBBQ” etc.

Then I stop to think if it follows other HD collections it’ll likely get a digital distribution.  I really like the idea of SotC being one button press away from playing off my hard drive. As silly as it might sound I think SotC has racked up more time for me than any other game when it comes to letting it play in my PS2 without actually playing it.  I just like Agro running around to the music while I’m working on some other task on my computer, or reading manga, or whatever. Five years seems forever ago.

  • Learii

i going buy it on day 1 i love ICO

  •  Ooooh!! Day 1!! :]

  • HistorysGreatestMonster

I can’t wait for this. I’m of the belief that if you don’t like Shadow of the Colossus, you shouldn’t be allowed to play videogames.

  • Boris_Althema

I haven’t played SotC nor ICO as I wasn’t an avid console gamer back then.

And all this hype that I’ve read on all threads concerning this game, videos off youtube and some reviews I have read is making me really interested. So yea, looking forward to this.

  • Joanna

Now I can finally experience these master pieces. :3
