Following Xenoblade Chronicles, What Are Monolith Soft Up To Now?

By Ishaan . June 15, 2011 . 8:38am

See the image above? It’s an image that Monolith Soft have up on the front page of their website, ripped by ever-vigilant RPG lovers on the net. Judging by the name on the bottom-right of the image, it was drawn by Yasuyuki Honne, art director on the Baten Kaitos games and concept artist on Xenoblade Chronicles.

There’s no way to tell, but perhaps this is a hint at Monolith’s next project? The studio is currently hiring additional staff. This recruitment drive began back in December when they announced they were hiring for a wide range of vacant positions.

At the time, the following image was displayed on their recruitment page, where it still exists today:

Yup the internet was talking about this all last night. lol Baten Kaitos 3 on the Wii U. I could die a happy man if that happens. :D

    • Wait, if baten kaitos origins is technically a sequel, wouldnt it be baten kaitos 2?

      • Zero_Destiny

In Japan Origins is called Baten Kaitosu II: Hajimari no Tsubasa to Kamigami no Shishi. It’s still a prequel but it is numbered 2.

        • Baka

          • Ren

@Zero_Destiny:disqus I think Wildy is the Tsundere here.

          • Man that’s twisted who is who now?! I know I’m the Loli, but that’s it.

          • Zero_Destiny

First WildArms, and now Ren, and Raioh. You guys are really trying to derail my statement aren’t ya? >_<

Oh yeah Ren WildArms is my Raibaru. Well he thinks he is at least. XD Turns everything into a contest. lol I just wanted to talk about how I go to bed every night and pry for Baten Kaitos 3 and then this happened. lol Oh well that's life for ya.

          • No, you are the tsun here!

  • Hopefully its Baten  Kaitos for the 3DS. I do not want to wait until late 2012 or even 2013 for that matter of a Wii U game, sorry Z_D…

    • Guest

plenty of other games in the meantime you will day one…

  • Mediaeval fantasy Midgar?

Hey, while you’re here, any industry insights on why Nintendo of America hates bringing Monolith games over like Xenoblade and Soma Bringer?

      • Haha, I can’t really comment about why or why not, since that’s usually a business decision on their end.

XB sounds like an easy cash in, since NOE has done all the work, but then again, it’s close to the end of the Wii’s life cycle, so perhaps they don’t want to bother?

As for Soma Bringer, I’m not sure why they passed over that, since the DS was still going strong back then.

        • People claim “close to the end of x system’s life cycle”, but then Nintendo goes and throws backwards compatibility into their new system.  When there’s BC capability, why does it matter if it’s the end of the system’s life cycle??

          • That’s normally up to the 1st party and/or developer. In Japan, you can get away with continuing releasing games on an older platform, but usually retailers will want to jump on the latest and greatest and thus fore go the old and not carry it anymore, which will no longer make it viable to release on >.<

    • Covnam

Thanks for that link, I was hoping a larger image of the header was out there.

  • joesz

    Xenosaga IV bitches!!

    • yeah they do it and it won’t come here because Nintendo still has the casual mentality going on for US.

    • godmars

      On PSP/PSV/3DS please.

I worry when JP devs go anywhere near the PS3 or 360. Especially with RPGs…

      • WizardoftheBlueOrder

        The first two are impossible.

Nintendo pretty much owns Monolith Soft. (I think they own 80% or more of the shares.)

Perhaps a Wii U RPG…though I’m still angry at NoA for not localizing Xenoblade. I mean, it’s not like NoE already translated it into English or anything…

        • Suicunesol

I think this is going to be a Wii RPG.

Nintendo has no intention of dropping Wii support yet since Wii U still has almost another year before coming out.

Also, Baten Kaitos is known for its beautifully-rendered 2D backgrounds. Unless they draw the 2D art to specially take advantage of 3D (which is impossibly hard to do), 3DS is not a good choice.

Of course, I would be thrilled if this was a brand-new RPG.

          • HIghly doubt, based on the other article, that a new Wii RPG, would fit into their strategy of catering to the Wii Late Adopters…

          • puchinri

Wait, why wouldn’t it? I didn’t read the other article mind you, but if people are coming to the Wii still, why wouldn’t a RPG fit in with that strategy? (Or am I missing context?)

          • gatotsu911

I’m guessing it’s a 3DS game. The Wii is basically dead (it’s certainly past the point where any major developers will be starting new projects for it) and the Nintendo likely wants to push the 3DS in Japan. Besides, a game with 3D Yasuyuki Honne art would be like visual sex.

        • badmoogle

“Nintendo pretty much owns Monolith Soft.”

Really?when did that happen?(i’m not doubting you i’m just curious)

          • malek86

Back in 2006, they bought almost all the shares from Namco.

    • I think Namco Bandai has the rights to Xenosaga so it’s unlikely that they would do another game. But I would love another Baten Kaitos or a new RPG preferably for the 3DS.

      Xenogears II

    • skymap

Given how the series went, I doubt Nintendo would even allow them to create a IV.

  • godmars

That pic certainly suggest something sci-fi themed. It looks like an ancient crashed spaceship at least.

  • FStubbs

It won’t matter because Reggie won’t let any Monolithsoft games into the US.

  • gatotsu911

I’m so torn up. On the one hand I instinctively get excited for any new Monolith Soft game. On the other hand I’m afraid that no matter how good it is, Nintendo of America will screw it out of being released here.

  • Phoenix_Apollo

Nintendo of America….why? Why can’t we just get some Monolith Soft games from you guys? At least Namco Bandai localized most of their stuff when they had the control.

    • Ironically the only two Monolith Soft games released for DS and Wii that made it to US were Dragon Ball Z AthS and Super Robot Taisen OG Saga.  Both are Namco games (Atlus published SRT in US) and one of them is a series known for “no export for you”.

      • Phoenix_Apollo

I have both and love them dearly. Nintendo just doesn’t get what they’re missing.

  • badmoogle

Hey as long as it’s not Nintendo related i’m interested.

Edit:They are pretty much owned by Nintendo so scratch that.:(

  • I want to be excited but I cannot. D:

  • symytry

If you live in Japan and are fluent in Japanese, there’s a lot to be excited about.  In the west, we haven’t seen a Monolith game in english since the Gamecube.  Nintendo USA doesn’t care about RPG’s anymore unless they’re called Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy.

    • Nah that’s not true, the last Monolith Soft games were the Xenosaga series for the PS2 which was in 2008; Baten Kaitos’ last installment was 2006.

      • Masengan

Xenosaga Episode 3 was released in 2006.

        • symytry
          • As bad as I feel for you guys in US about Xenoblade; there are SOME of us who are getting it (in Europe). Don’t forget that! Also, you guys got Baten Kaitos Origins on the Cube, whereas here in Europe we never got it!

Just letting ya know it’s not all peachy for us and there is an alternative option if you mod your Wii. Just that NoA is terrible and NoE is really good nowadays.

  • kylehyde

I hope that it turns in a great game that japanese and probably europeans and aussies can enjoy. Meanwhile in the Americas we are planning to switch (or already switched) to another companies that can offer better games and/or have idea of what really we want.

  • skymap

I loved what they did with Xenosaga, so I should probably eventually get a Japanese Wii U. It’s unfortunate that they’ll probably never make something quite like my favorite series, but regardless.

Edit: Favorite JRPG series that is …

  • 3DS please. I don’t want to be forced into buying a Wii U

  • What they should be up to is localizing Xenoblade >:(

  • leadintea

I don’t think it’s going to be another Xeno game, seeing as how  Xenoblade was their most recently released game, so I’m thinking it’s going to be Baten Kaitos. I love both series, so either way, I’m going to be thrilled with it.

    • skymap

Xenoblade isn’t even technically a Xeno game.

  • PrinceHeir

I want another Xenosaga game with more religious themes, make it more consistent(by not replacing the team) anime cutscenes as opposed to in game models(Valkyrie Chronicles 2,3 or Rebuild of Eva quality would be nice)

and make the music soo haunting by bringing back Yasunori Mitsuda :P
