Fate/Extra Destined For Release In North America This Year

By Spencer . July 2, 2011 . 12:20pm

Surprise! Fate/Extra the Type Moon RPG from Luminous Arc developer Imageepoch is coming to North America thanks to Aksys.

Kinoko Nasu, creator of Fate/stay Night for PC, wrote the story for the PSP games. Set in the Fate universe fans will see familiar characters and a narrative with themes such as loyalty, death, love, and what it means to be human. Here’s a summary of the story.

Waking up in a strange virtual world with no recollection of the past, the main character finds themselves forced to fight for survival in a war they do not understand for a prize beyond value; the opportunity to have one’s wish granted. With only an enigmatic Servant, mysterious Legendary Souls drawn from the whole of human history, by their side the protagonist will have to face both friends and foes in battles to the death in order to not only gain possession of a mysterious object known as the "Holy Grail", but also to find the answer to the most important question of all: "Who am I?"

Fate/Extra has dialogue trees and branching story paths that ultimately lead to different endings. Even choices like the gender of the main character you pick change the way the scenario plays out. For more about Fate/Extra see this preview of the battle system and our impressions of the Japanese version.

Fate/Extra will be released on PSP, in stores and PSN, later this year.

  • NICE! Thanks, Aksys!

  • New to the series, would this be a good place to jump in or should I hunt down the anime?  May get it anyways looks awesome and it is a localized PSP RPG. ^__^

    • Definitely do not watch the anime. Either read the Visual Novel on the PC (translated by mirrormoon) or just jump on with this. This is an original story in a new world (despite what this article says), so it’s fine to jump on from here.

      • Nice to see a fan translation but seems like a hassle to get now. I rather wait for the next time it gets ported and wait on a localization (good luck huh?)

        I’ll play this game then.

        • It’s only been ported once to PS2. But maybe if this game sells well for Aksys, they’ll think about finding a way to bring the original VN over here. The fan-translation is good, though, if you ever change your mind.

          • I really hope so. Even though I’ve read it I would like to own it in English.

          • Now I hope this game does well and the VN gets a port to Vita or something.

        • Ryan Baer

It will never get an official translation due to the fan translation being very well done.

          • The fan translation group got the rights to the game? :o

          • Ryan Baer

No, but there has never been a case where an official company releases a visual novel already done by the fan community. Its kinda like an unwritten rule.

        • Exkaiser

Yeah, sorry, but an official localization is completely unlikely.

It’s really not that hard to find the fan-translation of the VN. I would recommend you pick it up. It’s quite good.

          • It isn’t the fan translation that is hard to find (Mirror Moon right?), I don’t like the prices of the PC game and I don’t feel comfortable with PC games too much to begin with.  I play *some* (mainly Cave Story and Yume Nikki) but the last fan translated PC game I played otherwise is Puyo Puyo Sun (apparently it is abandonware?)

          • Exkaiser

It’s not a game, it’s a visual novel. You read it and make choices. If you’re comfortable with Yume Nikki, you can do F/SN.

But, well, if you would rather not resort to piracy, I can’t blame you for not wanting to slap down ~$100 for it.

          • Apparently I cannot quote you Exkaiser

Sorry if I called it a game, I know it is a Visual Novel but still like calling them a game as a form of a genre they are in.

          • Exkaiser

@Kuronoa:disqus for future reference, when a comment tree maxes out, you can place a reply that the other person will get a notification about by placing an @ and then typing their name (It’ll bring up a drop-down list with the user in it).

I just wanted to separate VN and games because the action you take with them are different. You “play” Cave Story, you “read” Fate. Even if you’re not a fan of playing games on the PC, you might be fine with reading is what I’m saying. Well, in the end, you’re the only one that can judge that.

      • Suicunesol

Hey, what the Hell? The anime was good. It got me started on the Fate series before I played through the VN.

    • Ryan Baer

Neither, read the visual novel. Anime only covers 1 of the 3 routes

      • Exkaiser

There’s also a movie that covers the second of three routes, but neither does the novel justice.

      • Sadly it doesn’t. The anime covers all 3 routes in a pretty chaotic way~

        • Exkaiser

Does it really cover Heaven’s Feel? I thought it mostly did Fate with a smidgen of UBW.

Well, I didn’t watch it myself, after how plain the Tsukihime anime was.

          • Yep all 3, though Heaven’s Feel is almost nonexistent till pretty late in the show, similar to UBW.

          • Exkaiser

Seems like a mess… Luckily or not, the Tsukihime anime stuck to Arcueid’s route, so it was fairly coherent, but it also stuck to the least interesting route in the game, resulting in an uninteresting adaptation.

            Well, it can’t be helped.

          • @Exkaiser:disqus  Indeed, but even though nothing good came from the Type Moon anime adaptions(except Kara no Kyoukai) I for some reason still hope they will do a Heaven’s Feel Anime/OVA/movie, it did have the best fights imo.

          • Exkaiser

@RaiohAGE:disqus Some of the fights, like the final fistfight were totally awesome, but I think my favorite fight is still Shirou vs Archer from UBW.

I would totally watch a Heaven’s Feel anime just for that fistfight, though.

And yeah, Kara no Kyoukai’s movies were fantastic. It’s a shame that the novels never ended up getting localized.

          • @Exkaiser:disqus  I liked Shirou VS. Archer a lot myself, Shirou was actually more useful than Saber in that route..but yes the one fistfight is my sole reason of wanting an anime adaption of Heaven’s Feel. That made the reading through the whole Sakura dilemma story worth it, that and Dark Saber…and maybe the 9 second fight before that~

Were the novels planned for localization? If not it’s not really surprising, would still love to own them though and the Fate/Zero novels too.

          • Exkaiser

@RaiohAGE:disqus Yeah, the KnK novels were licensed by Del Rey Manga (which put a halt to the fan-translations) several years ago, but there’s been no word on them since at least 2009. The first chapter was published in the Faust magazine, but none of the rest of it was released.

        • The anime covers the  all 3 routes? o-o I didnt saw anything related to the craziness in Sakura’s route on the anime…

          • Yes it did, but like I said almost nonexistent and pretty lame~

      • KyoyaHibari

But there’s also Unlimited Blade Works, if that gets localized and hey, if they make a Heaven’s Feel anime route then we would have all 3, unless you include Ataraxia also then there’s a 4th

    • If you have no qualms about ‘story purity’ you can watch the anime. It may not be a perfect adaption, but you’ll get the basic foundation of the Fate story. Plus, the show’s not too bad. If you can and when you feel like it, check out the original VN.

    • KyoyaHibari

The anime is a good starting point, this RPG however is an original story I believe, so it won’t give you much of the actual story, but it will outline some different characters to learn about.

  • Yes!!!!! Thank you Aksys I love you, I’ve never bought an Aksys game before but this could be the first of many now!

  • Exciel

    Totally unexpected but totally accepted.

  • If they dub it, I will cry. Literal tears.

    • shy_mel

During the event it was said there will be Japanese voices.  The live blog record has the exact wording.

      • I can vouch for that, I asked the question XDDD

    • I can confirm that the game will have the exact same audio as the Japanese version.

      • Will you guys put dubs or just leave them with the jap voices? Anyways it could have no voices and i would love it nonetheless :P but still, i’m just curious :D

  • Somazu

oh aksys, how i love thee

  • Natat

I didn’t believe it at first when I read it earlier. But now… just, thank you Aksys.

  • savvy30039

Wait, I can play as a girl? I was already planning on getting this but now I want to play it even more!

    • Exkaiser

Yeah, male or female protagonist and a choice of three different Servants.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Honestly I never believed I would see this game coming out in English. Fabulous news, indeed.

  • KotaroInugami

No way? SERIOUSLY!? W00T! I already bought the art book. Love it.

  • epy

    YES! YES!

  • shion16

  • evilmoogle

WAIT, I ordered the JPN version yesterday! F**k!
    Must cancel ASAP!

    • Exkaiser

Oh, man, I feel for you. That’s the same feeling I get every time I buy anything and then it goes on sale the next day.

Except worse, because this is cheaper and in English!

      • Crimson_Cloud

Hey, at least you get an artbook and cool extras that you won’t get in English release. Well, if you ordered Limited Edition that is -_-‘

        • Ladius

The Japanese premium box was all sorts of cool, I hope Aksys is able to do a premium package like Mimana Iyar’s (of course I don’t expect the Saber af :P).

    • Lol, that did happen for me with Graces f, though I didn’t cancel the game but instead laughed my butt off~

  • Exkaiser

Oh man, I can’t wait to get torn to shreds by Ryougi- in English!

Sorry Archer, but she can pierce my points of death any day.

But yeah, you definitely never see turn-based 3D games. Nope. Never.

  • MEGATON! HOLY! Did not expect that. Thanks Aksys!!!

  • Holy friggin YES!!! Finally narcissistic Saber and Moe Caster and the obligatory “GAR” Archer, in English! Oh man I love this day!

  • IceRomancer

Huge news!! Sooo excited fo this!!

  • regreto

    yay! finally :D

  • Really? This isn’t going to be a case of Fate/Extra Forever?

  • This makes me….. very very happy.

  • TOT <– Tears of joy~

  • I’m so confused by the Fate franchise. I want to get involved, but I don’t know where to begin!

    What should I play/watch/read first?

    • 1st Read the VN with the damn good fan translation and for better experience with the voice patch.

2nd Read the Light Novel Fate Zero which is also fan translated on the net.

3rd Read Fate Hollow Ataraxia though only if you are fluent in Japanese, if not don’t bother.

As for this game, you can play it whenever you want it has no story connections to the original VN.

    • Exkaiser

To clarify Raioh’s post a bit, Fate/Stay Night is the original work and the VN should be read first. Ignore the anime.

Fate/Zero is a prequel to Fate/Stay Night and should be read after it. Fate/Hollow Ataraxia is a sequel to Stay Night and can be read after it, but it’s not translated yet.

Fate/Extra, as mentioned, is unrelated story-wise.

  • Unexpected! Thanks, Aksys. I’ll buy on PSN on release, but I probably won’t be able to play it until I get my PSV.

  • Ladius

Aksys and XSeed – the heroes of our age, willing to brave uncharted lands to bring us exotic treasures from the East :O
…ok, enough cheap rhetoric, it’s day-one-baby time for me! :D I’m so happy XD

  • Phoenix_Apollo

Hey Aksys, you and XSeed are just firing on all cylinders right now. Whatever you do, DON’T STOP!

  • I’m dreaming, right? This can’t be actually happening.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Imageepoch goodness! Goddamn, Aksys; you guys rock.

  • DemonicX

I love you so much Aksys!

  • SirRichard

Come on. Anyone, do anything. Ghostlight, Tecmo Koei, Rising Star, even Square Enix Europe; give this one a shot over here in Europe. Even as a pricey PSN download, I’d grab it. Please.

    • Ladius

Ghostlight is still interested in PSP games, but personally I would like to buy the USA version in order to support Aksys. PSP is region free, after all.

      • SirRichard

I know it’s region-free, but I’d prefer it if were given a shot over here. Thus, on the off-chance it’s marginally successful, it encourages future releases related to the franchise and possible future chances for similar games.

      • Ghostlight had yet to reveal the game they are going to announce but it is a PSP game that wasn’t featured in the top 4 of the poll they done a while back. I think it was the competition they gave away Persona 3 figures in which they asked people what game they would like ghostlight to localize.

Maybe it’s fate/extra for all we know

  • Hraesvelgr

Nice to see more PSP support coming from somewhere. I was interested in the game and I like Aksys, so I’ll probably pick it up.

  • Jok Jokoko

  • nyoron

    UMD release and subbed? Well done Aksys, preordering first chance I get. I will shed a small tear for the figma though ;_;

  • KyoyaHibari

Was not expecting that at all…I’m more geared towards whether or not Fate/Zero & Unlimited Blade Works will come here but we’ll see how this game is.

  • Wow.. I really didn’t see this coming XD! So awesome! I’m definitely going to pre-order this once we can :D. I’m soooo glad that Aksys and Xseed are still giving us great PSP games :D

  • d19xx

Not a fan of the series, but will buy this game to support Aksys. Good job guys.

  • Hm I may have to get it on PSN!

  • superdry

I’m not entirely surprised since no one has the license to FSN in North America after Geneon and Tokyopop closed down.

But, still…this is rather nice, unexpected news.

  • KyoyaHibari

@RaiohAGE:disqus Well Tsukihime I haven’t seen much of, Kara no Kyoukai was amazing and I enjoyed the Fate anime, however I don’t think you can have the entire anime cover 3 diverging routes subsequently, but hopefully more individual anime adaptions are in the works, I mean, we got the UBW movie what like 4 years after the original anime? Maybe Heaven’s Feel and Ataraxia will have their own adaptions in the future.

    • I agree, also yeah deff want a Heaven’s Feel anime. Can’t say much about Ataraxia only got little pieces of story throughout the VN, but it was funny and I would watch it~

For now though we have Fate/Zero and this comedy Type Moon show which’s name I forgot. >_<

  •  Totally unexpected! I’ve never thought that this day would come!

  • FStubbs

Shock. Doesn’t remove the sting of Operation Rainfall failing but at least it’s something to play.

  • Awesome!  Glad to see Fate/Extra got picked up, may have to check this one out as well!

  • sweet merciful jesus! Thank you Aksys! xD

And now I’ll get ready to get my ass kicked by the MIGHTY LU BU!

  • i will surely import this game.

  • solbalmung

Still can’t believe it, srsly Aksys <3333333
I'll make sure to get it in day one!!!!

  • Guest

Hope your looking NIS! Do it! BRS!

  • Outstanding. Hope it becomes your Persona 3-like, Aksys, even if it’s kinda unlikely on the PSP.

  • …….freaking beautiful…..T_T

  • Darkrise

    I can’t believe it… Am I awake? IT’S A MIRACLE!!!! THANK YOU AKSYS!!!!!

  • Thank you so very much AKSYS! This Type-Moon fan thanks you from the bottom of his heart!

  • Barrit

Loved the series, definitely a Day 1 purchase! :)

  • malek86

Wait, I thought NISA had a publishing deal with Imageepoch?

    • Altritter

It may only count for games published after the deal was made.  If I’m not mistaken, it was made a good while after Fate/Extra came out in Japan.

    • *edit* meh, you got the answer from an official mouth anyways

    • I believe MMV was the Japanese publisher for Fate/Extra, not Imageepoch.

  • VWinds

    I love you Aksys. So damn much. I want to hug you right now. ;___;
I’m buying two copies. UMD for pretty boxart shelf porn. PSN for the Vita.

  • kroufonz

awesome, if it have japanese voice then color me intersted (it’s hard to play something vn related with english voice :p)

  • DanteJones

Despite how ridiculously hot it is outside right now, this made my day. :) Thank you Aksys and Siliconera crew!

  • OMG!!! Is this a dream??!! Someone please punch me!!!!

  • anbu

They did their part, now it’s our turn.  Day 1 for me.

  • Im quite surprised a company IS supporting the PSP. Day one buy.

  • Wackoramaco87

Have no idea about the story, but will totally get it just to support the company. Thanks so much Aksys!

  • Thomas Maloney

At least some one actually has the balls to release Imageepoch PSP games overseas :V

Now if we can only get 7th Dragon 2020…

  • JustaGenericUser

  • Istillduno

Man, just the thing to make up for having to dodge low flying pigs all day.

    My body is ready.

    • Exkaiser

But is your body made of infinite swords?

      Better get on that.

  • I am SO excited. See, THIS is why I love Aksys! Between Hakuoki, Fate/Extra, Jikandia and 999, the company has my eternal love.

  • ManaKnight

OMG OMG OMG.  I love Fate/Night Stay and have been wanting this game.  I’m soo excited. :D

  • <3<3<3<3Type your comment here.

  • sdragon21

Does anybody have the trailer that was shown at the panel earlier today???

    • The trailer was p. amazing, not gonna lie

  • I’m super excited that everyone here is so hyped for Fate/Extra! :D

    Get hype! ^_^/

  • meganeshounen

Honestly, for a moment there, I thought it was April Fools all over again.

And then I looked at my PC clock.

*insert church music and multitudes of angels singing*

  • Souji Tendou

Can I have Rider as my servant? If yes, I’ll get this game when it get released in NA.

    •  From my recollections of the game you can only play as Archer, Caster and Saber. The rest are enemy only.

      • malek86

Unsurprisingly, that’s the typical fighter/ranger/mage selection.

    • Kibbitz

Only Archer, Saber and Caster, and not the same Archer, Saber and Caster you’re familiar with.

      • IsaacGravity

Caster too? That’s a huge (and very pleasant) surprise.

Hmm… Must make choices carefully now… Either way,the fact we’re actually getting this is a HUGE and GOOD surprise!

        • Kibbitz

It’s a surprise. I will hold back on the good. I like the game a lot but I’m cynical as to how people will respond to its gameplay and story. Still, I’ll preorder the US version as well if they keep the Japanese voices. If they decide to only dub it, I’ll wait for a secondhand copy or a price drop.

          • Read the lower comments. It will have the original voices~

          • Kibbitz

Cool, there goes my money then. Guess I should start on my *perfect* run guide.

Edit: Sorry, forgot my manners, thanks for the info.

      • Exkaiser

Isn’t Archer pretty much the same? Saber has a different identity and Caster is completely new, though.

        • Kibbitz

Possibly, I don’t remember too much about either the Fate/Stay Night or the Fate/Extra version. The personality type is pretty similar, but there might be differences in character history. I definitely didn’t finish his path since I got mildly annoyed by his gimmick and I already was a bit tired of the game after two runs of my own so I could hand Melinda a save to do that bonus boss battle against Shiki. Guess we’ll once the game is out, unless some other better informed person decides to chip in!

  • So can’t wait for it to come finally after a year or more

  • AzureNova

    Taiga!!!!!! Pre-ordering now! =^_^=

My love for Aksys honestly has broken the rating scale I usually use *__*

  • The reaction to this announcement was incredible. You’d think the room exploded, from the sound that was made. So, so looking forward to this, even if a little part of me wanted to do it myself.

    • Kris

Sounds like it was a blast! I wish I could have been there.

    • Ladius

I think we’re all waiting for Carpe Fulgur to jump on the console train, there are so many great games lost in translation this gen that having another player in the niche localization business would be a boon :)

      • Well, to be perfectly honest, after hearing some of the numbers being thrown around concerning the upfront costs of console distribution and manufacturing, ESPECIALLY on handhelds, I’m not sure we’ll ever enter the console market. What I’ve heard at AX can only be described as “grim”.

  • I’ll be more surprised if they went and add in english voices!

  • RagnaXBL

…and my faith in humanity was restored

I think it’s kinda old, but seriously Siegfried and Jeanne as Saber, sexy Berserker Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper as a cyber Loli and William friggin Shakespeare as Caster?! Now I feel sad that we’ll never get that one..I will never forget you awesome rejected project >___<

    • Exkaiser

But Sigurd is my favorite legendary hero. I’ve been wanting to see him as Saber for ages!

Curses! The sorrow of cancelled projects with really neat ideas.

      • Same here, either him or Jeanne and we would’ve gotten both, lol…well that’s “Fate” huh~

  • Locklear93

HOLY CRAP.  Where do I pre-order? :P  I’ve been buying Saber figures for almost as long as I’ve been collecting figures, and I’ve wanted SOMETHING F/SN to get localized for just as long.  Maybe if this does decently it’ll convince MangaGamer or Jast and Type/Moon to get the original VNs out here. Or any other stuff, besides Fate/Unlimited Codes, which is pretty confusing without context. :P

Or maybe I’m putting the cart so far ahead of the horse that one can’t be sure the horse isn’t actually for another, entirely unrelated cart…

  • Knight Hart

  • its this a fighting game or a RPG game?

  • Actually saw this at Anime Expo, looking forward to it!

  • Justin Wilson

Looks like it’s time to finally buy a PSP!

  • Oh my, just got back from graduation to hear this news and it’s totally made my day! Import button at the ready!

  • I almost had a heart attack when I heard the news :D !

    YES! YES! YES!

  • OMG?! Best news ever! I’ve been wanting to play that game so badly.

  • another reason to live XD

  • WTF is wrong with these companies, making me spend all my hard earned cash?! WHAT IS WITH ALL THESE GREAT GAME RELEASES?! I need to find a better job….(last time I work at McDonalds…..)
