Try Out King of Fighters XIII At EVO 2011 And Ask A Producer Questions

By Ishaan . July 16, 2011 . 10:29am

Atlus are publishing King of Fighters XIII in the U.S. If you’re planning on attending the EVO 2011 tournament, you’ll be able to try out a playable build of the game. They’ll also be hosting a live panel with one of the producers from the development team to take questions from fans.

King of Fighters XIII will also be at Otakon. Atlus say they want to support tournaments and provide prizes for participants. The game is due out this October on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the U.S. You can watch a trailer and check out more screens here.

I’m really happy Atlus USA is publishing the game, I’m sure they will market it in the best way and give it the recognition it deserves. Let’s hope SNK is able to improve the netcode.

    • Setsu Oh

i dont think i believe in any studio other than naughty dog and atlus now(and a little weaklier in some others)…i felt betrayed by the others. (i’m looking at you SE). for years.

  • HistorysGreatestMonster

Very cool. The only thing the game is missing is a choice between English and Japanese voices for the individual characters, like Street Fighter IV has. Bummed there’s no choice for a dub, but I will live.

Let’s hope Blue Mary and Yamazaki get announced as console characters, soon.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

Like we need it, its not a big deal but yeah i hope Blue Mary

      • HistorysGreatestMonster

As I said, it’s not 100% necessary, but it’s something most other fighting games have these days and so it’s noticeable when it’s not there. I figured Atlus would be able to make a pretty high quality dub, similar to how nice the English voices for BlazBlue are.

        • Kris

Have you heard KoF XII’s or KoF Sky Stage’s dub? I’m kind of glad that that’s not happening again. :p

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wayne-LaBranch/100002132711844 Wayne LaBranch

inorite, besides we all grew up on these games with their default language.  Just the new kids will whiny about it

          • Setsu Oh

i even played kof kyo without  translation. and faq. freaking new kids.

          • HistorysGreatestMonster

We also grew up without online versus mode in fighting games. Times change and different things get added as time goes on.

I’m just saying I’d like a character like Terry Bogard or Ash to be able to speak in English. A character like Kyo or Mai, I’d keep in Japanese. Don’t want them to get rid of the Japanese vocals, just give us a choice.

          • HistorysGreatestMonster

Haven’t heard Sky Stage’s, but yeah XII’s was bad. But that’s from Ignition. Ignition have a history of crappy dubs. This is from Atlus.

      • Setsu Oh

it IS necessary for me. english dub only is a no go and i can’t spend that much money on customs alone forjp imports. i’ll only buy it when i’ll get to japan one day in my life if there is no jp dub on western  versions. i haven’t bought persona games 3 and 4 and ff12 international, first ff game to please me in YEARS after 8, because of the lack of jp dub option. it will be the same with kof. i can’t bear hearing my fav chars in bad english. same thing for jp dubless disgaea games. you are not buuying cars half rotten wth rust why buy a half baked english dub if it is the only option (remark: i don’t mind if it is there and horrible if the jp dub is there too….)

        • http://profiles.google.com/sebagomezi sebastian gomez

“i even played kof kyo without  translation. and faq. freaking new kids.”
No offense but, You really played that piece of garbage?

        • http://profiles.google.com/sebagomezi sebastian gomez

that´s the problem with fanboys, they (SNK) FINALLY, FINALLY released the game for ALL OF US, core players and fanboys, and fanboys immediately start making these really dumb and pointless requests. Please, stop complaining about every little detail.

    • PrinceHeir

ehh i’ll stick with JPN voices just to save them money.

would rather use the funds for making the story as deep as blazblue. heck why not rehire those voice actors and rerecord new scenes and such?

oh and yes Blue Mary, Yamazaki, SHermie, Chris, and my girl Vanessa needs to be here :P

  • MrSirFeatherFang

So let me get this straight, KOF XIII was able to get on the PS3 without an English dub. I thought that’s why Arcana Heart 3 didn’t have a physical BD release. So does SCEI of America really require an English dub for their games? I’m confused (I can’t even remember where I read about that English dub policy…)

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

You probably read it the same place all of us did: in various people’s comments and guesses. There hasn’t been any official word from SCEA set down. Some people say that it has more to do with the budget of the particular game, but then how did Agarest Zero get a disc release on PS3? It’s all speculation, for the most part, that people have taken as fact.

      • kupomogli

This right here.  People like to blame Sony as fact when like you said, it’s just speculation.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/jodecideion?feature=mhum TheWon and Only

Well after the old policy of not releasing 2D games unless they were in a collection. I wouldn’t be surprised about anything.

          • neo_firenze

Has anyone ever proven that was really a policy?  Victor Ireland ramblings do not count as legitimate proof.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony fought against certain OLD games (which might have been 2D) released for non-budget prices outside of collections, but any actual policy that 2D = no go unless in a collection?  I’ve always been skeptical.

As for voices, please god no English in SNK fighters.  Maximum Impact on PS2 did that (and didn’t include Japanese voices) and was laughably awful.  That would be the reason I own only the Japanese version of that game…

Also, mikanko is correct that KOF XIII has very little voice acting anyway.  Just shouting out move names during the fight, but the game doesn’t have many (if any?) voiced story scenes.

          • HistorysGreatestMonster

Yeah, but there’s a story mode now. I’m pretty sure it’s probably voiced.

      • mikanko

This is SNK we’re talking about here, and the port is being handled by a very small team.  They never went to the trouble of adding voices or extra story to previous fighting games during the PS2 era which were ported when SNKP had more resources to work with.  Atlus is taking a hands off publisher role in this release, and is primarily there to market and distribute what SNKP puts out.

I would be incredibly surprised if there’s any voices outside of the actual game.  If you’re hoping for a robust story mode outside of the text boxes that were in the arcade you’re likely to be disappointed.

At most you might see some changes in the translation done by Atlus like they did with Demon Souls, but unlike SNK games of old KoF XIII’s English translation in the arcades is pretty grammatically accurate, if a bit boring.

    • mikanko

Arcana Heart 3 didn’t get a physical release in the US period.  If they had released it for 360 and not PS3 you might have something there, but they never did.  It likely didn’t get a disc release because of publishing cost, and low sales expectations.

KoFXIII also has close to no voice acting.  So it’s not exactly Blazblue story mode not getting a dub.

If there is any policy regarding needing an English voice over for SCEA, it’s likely not set in stone, but just one factor they look at during the approval process.

      • RagnaXBL

Well i’m no expert in sales
But why give it a Disc release in Europe, surely they could get more sales in the US alone

        • mikanko

Not necessarily.  Different publishers having different ideas on what’s worth the risk, and the AH3 scene isn’t exactly big in the states.  A big part of the fighting game scene here doesn’t really give something with AH3′s aesthetic a chance before dismissing it.

          • RagnaXBL

funny thing is i thought that would be 10 times more likely to happen on the EU side :D

  • http://www.youtube.com/B4ULoveShine Tim_at_where

@AtlusUSA:twitter  thanks for localzing #KOFXIII, especially when it has an arcade release and the fact you’re reaching out to the fighting game community.

PS: any word on when you’ll bring back your own Power Instinct? ^_^

    • Setsu Oh

as for a ‘new’ game from a known franchise , i would like more kizuna encounter 2 and know if the katana wielding woman ends up being kim’s wife…..
but well to each its own i guess. i really like the original, post apoca background and chars. and seen many guys cry at the boss. oh i gues hairy greasy corrupt cop wouldnt pass through without steering up some scandal  from fox for snk ain’t it? aaaaaaah good old days…i still wonder why it took snk so much time to include ‘baton pass’ in their kof series….(kizuna: 96, kof2003)

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

I would love it if Atlus got back into making fighting games.

the japanese voices are fantastic why on earth do you want to change that ?

this is fantastic news its good that this game is at EVO it will raise awareness and get people hype !

    Bring on OCTOBER

    • Setsu Oh

OHMY! i hope they release a version with BOTH tracks!!! mai in english;  eeew.NIPPONICHI ftw!

    • http://profiles.google.com/sebagomezi sebastian gomez

In fact, I don´t recall playing ANY KOF in english!, is there any KOF in english!?

      • HistorysGreatestMonster

KOF 2006 has English voices during the conversation scenes. Kinda liked them. Thus why I suggested I’d liked to see a dub option.

        • http://profiles.google.com/sebagomezi sebastian gomez

oh yeah, you are right, anyway, but you have to keep in mind the cost of each of game, maximum impact/2006 are cheap games, they could afford a dub option. And when I say KOF, I mean REAL KOFs. To my eyes, 2006 isn`t part of the saga.

        KoF XII

      • Jason Hoang

KOF: Maximum Impact. The first KOF game do have only English voices and it was bad.

  • xAKUM3TSUx

Well even though I don’t like EVO- at least they’re supporting KOF XIII for U.S. playback as opposed to the drowning arcades here….R.I.P. Arcade Infinity TT_TT

  • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

I hope they have some new character announcements to make.

      Vanessa pleeze

      • Setsu Oh

oh yes. vanesa and heavy d. there isn’t enough black characters in japanese games and capcom has the face off bison/dudley. vanessa vs heavy d would be nice. we alrady have muaythai vs muaythai. sometimes having two chars havin the sam discipline but being totally different advertise how varied is the game….and , snk, pls don’t forget about making money, MMA is strong now and you have an mma fighter add some moves to the kof11 movelist and that is it!  no need for rick .s, vanessa is already in the place. right?

  • Setsu Oh

i think the only gaming t shirt i would wear is an atlus one.

i laughed when ii learned  SE dropped dsoul. another bad decision from  square. i’m used to it since xenogears. now they help arcades monger snk.
it was still, difficult  for me to hear them not be that sure of releasing kof13 on consoles when console  gamers helped them make ends meet for horrible  kof12 and arcades dropped it and refused to buy it.
correct me if any of the above info is  wrong plz.
i love to hear stuff about  how everything is oiled behind the scenes of videogames, the silence of so many jp studios makes me sick ( although some have opened up and i’m glad to see communication at last). i bought all the kof ps1 games and believe me, importing them wasn’t that easy from where i was living.
i’m glad to see at last (atlus ^^ ) a more than correct version with story and a regular number of chars make its way to us. now if i could have more info on if billy is alone, with a partner like for kof12consoles (mature and  liz)  or if we will have more than a couple of chars for consoles. even after all those years, nona, which i don’t like much(i’m still a fan of shinkiro san), 2001 and 2000 kofs…and kof 12…..i have to say, i’m still a fan of snk, i’m still putting kofas my fav fignthing series. even after…14 years (got kof 95during the 96arcade era).

HOW RAD WOULD IT BE IF ROCK HOWARD WAS THE SECOND SURPRISE CHAR WITH BILLY.

    • http://www.facebook.com/santd Daniel Sant

you mean demon’s souls?  that has nothing to do with Square

      • Setsu Oh

i read somewhere squre could have published it in the west but didn’t believe in it so let it go to atlus. (who made a bunch of money out it )  that is what i meant

  • RagnaXBL

I want to go to EVO :(
