See Terror of the Stratus’ Two Gameplay Styles

By Ishaan . August 11, 2011 . 12:32am

Konami recently released a new trailer for Terror of the Stratus, their upcoming PSP action RPG developed by Nude Maker. Have a look:

Terror of the Stratus has two modes – a Defense mode and an Extermination mode. The former plays like a 3D action game with a side view where you search for weak points before fighting a giant enemy.

Once you send a weakness report to your commanding officer, you can move onto Extermination mode where you do battle. More on these modes here.

Know it a no-no, but it befuddles me that a game like this isn’t on the PS3. That HD console seem to be restrictive to certain game styles.

    • SlashZaku

Budgets.  That’s why handhelds have pretty much carved out certain genres and ideas for themselves cause there is less risk involved in getting them out there/off the ground (the big issue for us looking at these titles is the God-forsaken localization).  Look how many studios have struggled or closed down this gen putting out console titles.  Vita’s budget for titles is said to be in the ballpark of PSP so these developers currently working on the PSP will most likely make an easy transition to it, with a graphical edge to use (+ the benefits of controls).  Still, you would think with budgets being an issue on HD consoles, they’d just aim for something like PSN =

  • KONAMI!! I’m counting on you for an english release!!!

  • OneOkami

I’ve always had the impression that the game has some impressive production values, especially for a PSP game. Thats what has already sold me on it.

  • Kibbitz

October? Geez, I need to fit this in my budget somehow…

    • Guest

      get back to work!

  • skymap

Wasn’t this originally supposed to come out in Sept? Isn’t this directly competing with Type-0 now?

  • This, GAME, LOOKS, SO, SEXY!!!!!

  • dr000d

Why do all these amazing games come out on a freaking handheld? -_-

    • Crimson_Cloud

It’s not the handheld that is problem, it’s the localization. But yeah, I know what you mean, I would enjoy games like this on my HD TV much more then on the small screen. But today, the developers play it safe by not spending too much of a budget on HQ graphics for home consoles.

      • Guest

THey could do like NEOGEO station and make PSN & PSP versions hmmm I dunno

      • Ryos

You can play PSP games on an HD TV…

        • Crimson_Cloud

I wasn’t talking just about the TV option, the home console games would clearly have more content then a handheld game. It’s like talking about Persona 3 Fes and Persona 3 Portable. I want more games like P3 FES, don’t you?

    • Exkaiser

Because people like handheld games, and so handheld games sell, and so companies are interested in developing games for handheld systems.

Among other matters, such as handheld systems being cheaper to develop for.

      • dr000d

People definitely do not like handheld games. The whole world does not = Japan.

        • I like handheld games and I am not japanese :/

        • Exkaiser

I like handheld games and I am not Japanese. I am certain there are several million other people in the Western world who also partake of handheld games. Of them, I get the feeling that not all of them hate handhelds.

But anyways, this is a Japanese game made only for the Japanese market. If you are already aware that handheld games are all the rage in Japan, why would you even need to ask?

      Because it’s cheaper to make

Really got an EVA vibe and the gameplay looks interesting too, Do want :)!

    • LynxAmali

To me, it looks more like Eva and RahXephon had a baby. The whole alien invasion (the Mu’s invasion from RaXephon) with the base layout being from Eva.

I still want it. I’ve had my preorder in since it was announced. <3 Nude Maker.

      • Guest

        RahXephon was basically EVA redux

      • Aoshi00

I just pre-ordered it earlier this morning after this trailer, since I haven’t seen much gameplay before..  I mean the presentation was very EVA-like too w/ the big kanji.  I think I want to get the drama CD as well, great cast :)

  • Kai2591

    oh man this looks epic~
Would’ve been nicer if it was a PS3 or Vita game with better graphics.

I keep hearing ‘overdose’ in the trailer…maybe they can’t overuse the mecha.

  • Göran Isacson

Doubtful if want. Funny thing is that the story looks interesting, as interesting as these kind of Evangelion-influenced stories get anyway, but the gameplay… I fear this might end up being “CUTSCENE CUTSCENE CUTSCENE CUTSCENE and now you basically play the four minute part of a twenty-minute episode in which actual fighting happens and that’s all the gameplay you get”.

That may be some peoples bag, but I crave more interactivity then that.

  • theworldofnoboundries

Another great game with Mecha, Setsuna.F.Seie seiyuu and Alien invading earth and the battle is made with Anime art….. but hell it is on PSP.

    No hope for localization anymore.

  • AzureNova

This looks pretty good, Ill keep an eye open for more info on it.

  • OMG! the game is awesome, love the gameplay and the awesome music (Kajiura <3)

  • *sigh* Yet another cool-looking game that we’ll never get (and even if we did, I’ll admit, I’d never play) because it’s on PSP. I reeeeeeeally wish Japanese devs would learn a thing or two about going multiplatform. They have these assets done; would it be THAT difficult to make a 3DS game? The answer is no. I know enough about game development to know that they could port everything over to Nintendo’s sh*tty dev kit (they’re still using, basically, the same cr*ppy GDK they gave to developers for Gamecube, and then later Wii, games), and pump out a 3DS version is a few short weeks or a few months, depending on how quickly they worked on it. Plus, games like this would certainly be welcome on XBLA, PSN, Steam/Gamersgate….all sorts of platforms are viable and played here in the West that Japanese devs actively ignore. It’s getting very depressing at this point. They have no right to complain about lower sales for anything these days if they don’t make games for more platforms.

    • Guest

We got Infinite Space so let’s not rule it out just yet and PSP has a larger user base in Japan than the 3DS so I’m guessing they’re making their decision based off that and the lackluster 3DS sales

    • SlashZaku

Meh.  Japanese seem to be one of the few still trying to give platforms their own ‘identity’ with these exclusives and it’s not something I’m going to knock them for in a gen where near everything is multiplatform.  Gives other platforms a reason to be owned and might make you look at something else you might not have noticed (exclusives sold me on the original Xbox).    They can also focus on one platform instead of trying to see what works across 4-5 of them and such.  But I seem to be in a minority so whatever/

Gameplay looks cool but those 2D cut ins need to animate faster I think.

  • vrakanox

    I want it.

  • Kitestwinblades

reminds me slightly of Xenosaga. I’ll keep an eye on this one.

  • The whole time I’m watching this, I’m like can we cut down on the anime and show more of the actual gameplay. I felt like people were scared to show us what we really want to see. Other than that, I’d LOVE to get a demo of this game lol.

IT looks like the action RPG route is going very well. I’m loving it!

  • This game looks gorgeous! I want to believe Konami will bring this over. I’d really like to play it in a language I can understand.
