Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Includes Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence

By Spencer . August 12, 2011 . 2:19am

mgssubWhile the package art says Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Hideo Kojima says the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection actually includes Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. That means you’ll also get the MSX versions of Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2 on disc.

Kojima explained on Twitter, the overseas (i.e. Western version) includes Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in one package. So, you get MG 1, MG 2, MGS 2, MGS 3, MGS: PW.

The Japanese package is a bit different. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is not included. Instead, you get a product code to download Metal Gear Solid. Japanese gamers get MG 1, MG 2, MGS 1, MGS 2, and MGS 3. Kojima also confirmed the Japanese version of Metal Gear Solid 2 will have Japanese voice acting.

Kojima also gave fans a look at the trophy icons for Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is slated for release in November.

  • That’s great to hear! I’m really looking forward to getting the HD collection. Thanks for the post! And your blog is awesome!

  • malek86

I wonder, any reason why they wouldn’t include the Substance version of MGS2?

    • zweii

MGS2 is the substance version so theres no problem there.!/Kojima_Hideo/status/101928946643374080

      • PrinceHeir

that means we’re getting MGS2 and MGS3 Substance/Subsistence, MG1 and MG2 MSX games, Peace Walker(which i was hoping they add a Extra Ops Version)

i already have MGS1 from PSN and we only need MGS4(how about a Substance version Konami???) and Portable Ops and Portable Ops+(which needs the Dual Shock 3 treatment badly)

come on Konami only a little more and i’ll buy 3 of these :P

        • HistorysGreatestMonster

I would only buy a Substance version of MGS4 if it were DLC, which I’m sure it wouldn’t be, considering how old the game is.

  • maxchain

1, huh?  I’d be upset we aren’t getting that if I wasn’t one of the three people who like Twin Snakes.

    • malek86

Well, Japan has to buy Peace Walker HD separately, while we can always get MGS1 from the PSN (which is the same version, they are only getting a code) for a tenner. If you ask me, I think we’re getting the better deal.

    • OneOkami

Well then make that four.  The Twin Snakes is my favorite version of the game.

    • Zero_Destiny

I rather enjoyed Twin Snakes too. It was my first Metal Gear game actually. lol

  • Sweet! The artwork for the trophy icons look great

    • Aoshi00

Ocelot one looks cool.  I’m looking forward to the tongue in cheek trophy names they would come up w/, they are always creative and humorous, like in Catherine “Let my sheep go” :)

      • For me, I love that Skull face-paint icon. As if Big Boss sneaking around in your base, looking for an opening to snap your neck, isn’t scary enough already.

  • Xeahnort

Something still bugging me about this MGS HD collection. Now MGS 3 is a multi-platform release, I was wondering if they’ll keep the mini-game Snake vs. Monkey for the PS3/Vita version.

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

I think Snake vs Monkey is off the table as Ape Escape is a Sony property.

  • So if I get it, I get all mainline MGS’s except 4?

    • 128bitigor

No, if you are buying western edition you get all main games except 4 AND 1. But you get PW instead which has pretty much nothing to do with the main series except from forming Zanzibar – which in reality is such a small and minor thing it could be realised like Farmville on Facebook.

      • It’s still an official chapter in Big Boss’ storyline. You could call this the Big Boss collection with Mgs 2 as bonus if you wanted.

  • 128bitigor

That means I will buy this package. Adding Substance in would be a nice touch, too.

  • blah blah

“Japanese version of Metal Gear Solid 2 will have Japanese voice acting.”
Do MGS games normally have English voice acting in Japan?

    • Aoshi00

Nah, the Jpn MGS all had Jpn voices before (I have both Jpn/US ver for MGS 1-4 and PW).. not sure about the Twin Snakes remake..

    • Exkaiser

The Substance version of MGS2 had English voice-acting in Japan.

  • Hexen

    Trophy frogs confirmed.

  • AndyFe

Nice i like that a lot I have always wanted to play the first two original MSX versions Metal Gear this was a purchase anyways but now it’s more so

  • Ben Tan

i sure do hope there will be a disc for this as i loathe long download times

  • acortes31

If we are getting the subsistence version of mgs3, I hope that also means online because by the time I had internet at home the online version of mgs3 had it’s servers down and couldn’t play as Reiko from RR or Ocelot, Raikov and Eva .

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

I can guarantee you that we aren’t getting MGO1.

  • HistorysGreatestMonster

What I’d really like to see is the cut scenes they removed from MGS2 out of respect for 9/11. It’s been 10 years, so I think you can destroy New York again.

    • Guest

The 10th anniversary is one month from now

      • HistorysGreatestMonster

Yes, I do have a calendar. lol

  • SolNeko

thats great deal i gotta say

  • btw MGS 2 Substance is also included according to adriasang ;)

  • Code

rar, consider this sold owo’ Was rather leery when I heard that it might not be subsistence MGS3, since I wasn’t keen on the camera work in the original. But with subsistence confirmed, definitely will be picking this one up >w<' Also very slick trophy icons, gotta put the time in I wonder if Peace Walker will have trophies? Either way looking forward to playing MGS3 all over again especially with the frame rate up zwz'

    • HistorysGreatestMonster

Why wouldn’t Peace Walker have trophies? It still counts as its own game, especially if it’s going to be downloadable by itself.

      • There might be an issue in transfering saves between PSP and PS3 versions of Peace Walker if trophy support is included. If I’m not mistaken, that’s the reason why Monster Hunter Portable 3 HD will also lack trophies.

        Just a guess.

      • Code

Basically what Daniel said, it’s a little different since it’s a Remastered PSP game; and there seems like there may not be trophies for all of them.

  • Guest

No MGS 1 for US? Oh well I still have the remake for Gamecube need to finish that

  • I would have been tempted by this package if MGS 1 was included…

  • thaKingRocka

Echoing the sentiment of others here, I am disappointed that the only game in the series that I would really want is missing. I will still buy it because I couldn’t stomach MGS with PSP controls, and I’d like to try the game out, but MGS1 would have made it a much happier purchase for me.

  • MrDolomite

But will MG1 and 2 be in HD?

    • punkchobit

      2 will be

      • MrDolomite

Whoa! Can’t wait for the HD pixels!

  • eilegz

too bad no remake of MGS 1 twin snakes in HD

  • Kojima has just made my day.  I was going to invest my November game $ on Assassin’s Creed, but news that PS3/360 owners are going to have a second bite at the MSX versions of MG1 and MG2 has changed my mind about the purchase.  Go Kojima!

  • Two lines of thought on this one. First, I’d much rather we had MGS1 in the collection. = Peace Walker seems kinda out there (not having played it admittedly, but didn’t someone down below in comments confirm it doesn’t really matter that much to the main MGS arc storywise?), and it seems criminal to not include the masterpiece that ‘started’* it all in such a collection.

    * I’m speaking of MGS really kicking the series off with a bang again, even though MG1 was the actual start of the series.

Second, I’m surprised to see so many fans of the Twin Snakes in the comments section. I know it’s pretty and all, but isn’t the music far inferior? I thought I had read that the soundtrack was redone for the Twin Snakes, and not necessarily for the better.

    I mean, come on guys. . .
I don’t know about you, but I still get shivers down my spine listening to this one~

You’re wrong, sir.  Peace Walker covers a critical portion of MGS lore as it establishes the Patriots.  It was Metal Gear Acid! that didn’t count to canon.

EDIT: If you haven’t gotten it already, get the MGS 4 encyclopedia. It will tell you what is established canon in the MGS universe to that game.

      • Mm, that’s fair. As said, I haven’t played it yet and was going off a comment down lower. I still find it silly/dumb/*negative adjective here* though to not include the beginning (and considered by many greatest) of the (Solid) series in such a collection.

        • That’s understandable, and that is a frustration that even I have, but the game has already been released on the PSN. You can get it for $10.

Besides, the collection already includes the true beginning of the MG series, so if you didn’t get it last gen, you will have a second stab at the lamb.

    • PrinceHeir

don’t want to beat the bush but yeah Peace Walker AND Portable Ops are 2 of the most important times of Big Boss.

you basically will learn how Big Boss change the way he is in the MSX versions.

i personally think they definitely need to include Portable Ops and Portable Ops +(since they badly need Dual Stick support)

  • Sometimes, I wish that I really could handle playing stealth games. MGS has been one of those series that seems really interesting, but I can not stand the idea of games where the best route is to sneak around.

Such is the conundrum of personal weak areas in games.

    • EvilAkito

I’m not really into stealth gameplay myself, but I found it easy to enjoy the Metal Gear games. Just play on the easiest difficulty. A lot of times you can deal with troublesome enemies by using the tranquilizer gun to knock them out. You also don’t really have to be stealthy all the time. Half the fun is getting caught and dealing with the onslaught of enemies.

      • Aoshi00

lol.. that’s how I played MGS2 back then on easy.. and just knocked out everyone w/ tranquilizer gun because I wasn’t good at sneaking and always set the alarm off..

  • Setsu Oh

w/e rocks ur boat makoji! i just want the first ame totally remade with the new engine. and new content integrated.

  • SirRichard

I hope there’s a trophy/achievement for eating one of every edible thing in the game.

Not that I need the incentive, mind you.

  • MrRobbyM

Thankyou, Kojima. That’s all I asked of this collection(besides MGS1 but that’s excusable)

  • neo_firenze

So, Snake Eater 3DS…  I wonder if it’s going to get cancelled outright.  It was already delayed to 2012.  I can’t see a whole lot of people preferring the non-Subsistence version with 3D effects over an HD version of Subsistence on PS3/360/Vita.

    • I’d buy it.

I don’t have a copy of the PS3 MGS3 anymore so either version will do fine for me, by the time I get either system the price drop will happen to buy both (and no I didn’t get that PS2 collection so I’m fresh for a collection purchase).

The 3DS version is being sent out to die, but I like playing on handhelds more these days to appreciate the thought.

With the Metal Gear collection I don’t have a HDTV to take advantage of the graphical gloss anyways.  May still get it for Peace Walker HD and the subsistane MG 1 and 2 MSX bonuses alone.

      • malek86

“The 3DS version is being sent out to die, but I like playing on handhelds more these days to appreciate the thought.”

Even so, I hope they won’t do like in OOT, which was left exactly as it was (read: not very suited to portable play, being sent back to your house every time). I don’t remember much about MGS, but I hope they’ll make sure people can play it in short bursts. More checkpoints, a quicksave feature, anything is fine.

    • malek86

We just had a post about Kojima working on it.

I really doubt it will be cancelled (there may be an HD collection, but remember, it’s not like Nintendo owners have any chances of buying it).

However, it wouldn’t surprise me if they sent it out of the gates with little fanfare. That would hurt its sales.

  • PrinceHeir

also i hope they put the Secret Theater mode from MGS3 Subsistence Disc 2 and Disc 3 featuring only cutscenes all throughout.
would love to watch Metal Gear Raiden Snake Eraser, and the Rock, Paper and Scissors battle against The Boss in HD :)it’s already confirmed we’re getting Substance and Subsistence so i expect content in each to be intact(VR Missions, Boss Survival and such)

thank you once again Konami :)

will buy this and Zone of the Enders Day 1 for sure :)

now if you can just make Silent Hill collection a little better(including 4 and Shattered Memories; or a voucher of SH1 for PSN) as well intact VA(wishful thinking)

  • RupanIII

Nice! I always wanted to play the originals.

  • mikedo2007

Looks like I have reason to buy this version.

  • Good thing I waited on Peace walker. I feel like a marathon is in order, play this then pop in MGS4 for one damn good weekend.

  • punkchobit

What about 3D support? It already does 60 fps, so it’d be trivial to add it.
