What has a 4.3 inch LCD screen, 2200 mAh battery, 2GB and isn’t a knock off? This Neo Geo Portable (temporary name) revealed on Famicom Plaza.

 

A Neo Geo For Your Pocket

SNK Playmore licensed the classic system’s name to make a new device. At 170x72x15mm, it’s even slimmer than SNK’s last portable system, the Neo Geo Pocket. Neo Geo Portable plays original Neo Geo games and comes with twenty loaded on board.

All of the games are North American versions with English text, which makes the Neo Geo Portable rather import friendly. It’s unclear if owners can install or play more games using the device’s built in SD card slot. The Neo Geo Portable also has shoulder buttons (L1, L2, R1, R2), a headphone jack and an AV out.

    Ooh! Could this be a new (or rather, returning) competitor for the handheld market? I never came across an SNK console, but I’m suddenly excited by the prospect alone, for some reason!

    Wait, AN AV-OUT PORT?!? … … … … … Hail SNK!!

    Although… I do notice a few oddities:

    - The AV-out port looks kinda small.
    - The shoulder button setup is weird: L1 and R2 are outer buttons, and L2 and R1 are inner.

      Hopefully it’s a new handheld that will keep the spirit of 2D gaming alive! The NDS was good for that much, at least.

        I really don’t mind whether it’s 2D or 3D. I just want developers to be able to make the games they want to in a budget they can afford, without having to resort to unnecessarily costly levels merely due to the market’s peer pressure.

            “Altruistic” would be an overestimation of me. I just want to see what various creators want to present, with as few limiting factors for them as possible. It doesn’t mean I’ll reserve my criticism when needed, but I’m open to observing how they’ll make use of their artistic freedom.

            Sure. 2D fetishes aside, it’s always great to see someone release a truly unique and original game, or even a fantastic, refined and most importantly SPIRITED re-interpretation of an older style (thinking TITS and Radiant Historia here). The pressure for every game to be a million seller hasn’t done much good for creativity.

      Looks like you’ve never owned a digital photocamera. Nearly all of them have a headphone-jack like A/V out port. Such ports usually go up to 4 connections, which is enough for A/V – composite video, audio left, audio right and ground.

        No, I haven’t, so thanks for the info. I do have a camcorder, but it’s a later model, so the AV output looks different.

      I’m gonna have to side with you on this one. It looks a bit too much like the iphone 4 and which Neo Geo console had shoulder buttons? For that build quality,  it looks like it’ll be quite expensive and no way will be able to compete with the 3DS and PSV if it’s real.

    Seeing this is SNK consoles, we can almost be sure that this console won’t be as succesful as 3DS and Vita but probably this consoles will be more targetted toward SNK fans who will spend their money to buy most of SNK’s classic game.

    So this will be heaven to all those addicted to nostalgia… Plenty of classics there alright. I don’t expect for this to run a KOF XIII port though! xD

    Or maybe it can? I mean, will it have any new release at all or just the old Neo Geo stuff? =/ Like indie stuff made in that 2D Classic style? That would be good…

    And I see they opt for just one analog stick and no d-pad… Oh well.

    Would buy if two things were met:

    1) Multiplayer/online capability.

    2) KOF 98/02.

    You do this, you have a sold customer.  Though there is absolutely no word on this thing having wifi or even close to the capability of doing this.

    they better put the rom versions. the arcade perfect roms .
    i can’t shake the weird feeling of them just beginning to get some money back from NGstation and KOF13n and then right away venture into another hardware risk. i hpe they won’t sell the games or console too high….. i do though realise that no game from them have that 4 shoiulder button need. so either they plan on a cheap alternative to vita, really cheap with weak protection against piracy (for … ps1 titles for ex, which use 4 buttons ) and benefit from the psp paradox : big console sales low game sales; or they just are badly managed once again and throw money through windows.
    i would have liked a 3d -tekken tag2 level- kof with 2d gameplay instead.

    I’m guessing this is a licensed version of some Chinese emulator console/media player – they already usually come with Neo Geo emulators, so it wouldn’t take too much work.

    but whether it’s worth buying or not depends entirely on how much (if at all) they’ve bothered to update the firmware and emulator from the half-arsed efforts you usually see on these devices, since presumably the ability to play other systems and downloaded ROMs will be removed (unless SNK has officially given up on caring about piracy of their old games, like Sega)

    I thought it played Neo-Geo Pocket/Color games not Neo-Geo games. That’s cool and all but I already have so many different ways to play the old Neo-Geo games but the only way to play Pocket games is like on my actual Neo-Geo Pocket Color. So now my dreams of playing my old Pocket games on a modern console are shattered. Oh well the dream goes on, the dream goes on.

          KOF 02 UM wasn’t a Neo Geo game though. 02 was, but not the UM edition, that came out almost 7 years afterwards I think.

    Looks awesome!! I may have to get one of these, I absolutely love my NGP Color. My only other question is are they going to release more ROM’s for download? I love the idea but it would be a shame if I could not buy more titles just because I am not in Japan. Perhaps they will release multiple cards with select titles on them, that would make this perfect.

            The emulators are legal, but copyrighted ROMs aren’t unless it’s a ROM you’ve backed up yourself. 

            (Merely having a copy of the game you downloaded a ROM of isn’t legal — has to be a ROM you’ve made personally for your own use).
