Dragon’s Dogma Has A Twist On MMORPG Style Raids

By Ishaan . May 9, 2012 . 5:00pm

Capcom revealed an interesting new feature for Dragon’s Dogma today. As you may be aware, Dragon’s Dogma doesn’t have any multiplayer modes. Instead, what it will have is an asynchronous MMORPG-like “raid” in the form of a boss battle with a creature called the Ur-Dragon.

If you have your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 connected to the Internet, the damage your and your pawns do to the Ur-Dragon in your game will be added up to the damage that other players do to it in their own games. The effects and damage of all of these different parties will be stacked until the creature is finally defeated.

Capcom say the Ur-Dragon is powerful and will require multiple encounters to defeat. All players who inflict damage upon it will be rewarded, but the greatest reward will go to whomever manages to deal the killing blow. All players’ names will also be recorded in a Hall of Fame. There’s no mention of when and where you’ll find the Ur-Dragon, however. Just that you’ll encounter it “somewhere”.

In the event that your console is not connected to the Internet, you’ll still get to fight the Ur-Dragon in your game, but the rewards will be different. You can watch a teaser for the Ur-Dragon battle above.

Dragon’s Dogma will be released on May 22nd in North America and May 25th in Europe.

Have to admit that I wonder how effective a raid will be that doesn’t let you see the other players and what kind of damage they’re doing. Of course I’m not at ALL familiar with how raids usually work, but it just… kinda feels like making it harder to tell how much HP is left won’t go over well with gamers.

It’ll be dead once it dies, don’t sweat the small stuff.

  • canarinta

Hey look it’s Infinity Blade II’s Clashmobs.

  • Carocaro4

    Cools.Really neat concept.
I’m not sold on this game though.

  • badmoogle

Hmm i still don’t understand how this will work..What if by the time i get to fight the dragon no one else is fighting him?Do i save, move on with the game, and come back later?Or what happens if i happen to start fighting him just moments before some other player bring the final blow? That would suck.

    Want this game baaaaaaadly!!

  • So the mode is basically like Demon Souls, only much worse since you never really have any interaction to speak of…

    • How did you read that and think Demon’s Souls?

      • takopako

people just love to compare things… -_-

      •  Because it’s faux coop and online gameplay interaction, whereas demon’s souls has actual world online interaction.

        • It’s not faux co op. It’s like Animal Crossing co op. A single player game that rubs players together in a parallel way. Infamous 2, LittlebigPlanet, or really any single player game with a modding community.

It’s a purely single player game where the player base can improve others’ experience, and you can share user generated content (pawns).

Day by day, I want this game more. Not because of this feature, though it does sound pretty cool. Not sure how exactly it’s gonna work though.

Don’t forget May 24th for Japan also.

      Remember Remember the 24th MAY!!!!

  • Nitraion

Wow disappointed for not having multiplayer…..
but it’s okay sorta expect that….
i’m surprised that dark/demon soul have more intraction

  • takopako

so interesting! multiplayer would probably take away from the experience and be a lag-fest because of all of the intricacies…not eeeeeverything is meant to be played with buddies. XD

    • Nitraion

if you look that way… i agree, but game like this tend to be fun if many player involved

      • takopako

i understand where you are coming from, and i would like if it had some good, fully developed multiplayer that didnt take away from the main story just as much as anyone else. But you have to think about how at some point, someone in the team probably proposed that there be multiplayer, and surely what we are being presented with is their solution of giving us some community element, while retaining the integrity of the original idea. XD you know?

something else i found interesting(that i saw in the dev diary 3). Apparently characters from online will populate your world, so that everyones universe truly will be different! I really like what they are doing with this game(if people cant already tell)!!! XD

        •  What I like is that you can import your friend’s pawns. I’ll make sure all my pawns are from other players.

          • takopako

likewise! a perfect blend of your own and other peoples’ creativity. i love it! XD the fact that you can give gifts and dress up pawns upon returning them is super awesome as well!

      • boundries_san

Why can game be like the oldies time where we can play with friend together on one same room anymore T_T

        • Perhaps we’re getting old???

          • boundries_san

Noooooo i am just 20 here T_T but maybe all my family here plays game so when i am still 2/3 i am already exposed to gaming. Hell i really like playing Top Gear with my cousin on one screen T_T
Even my father sometimes plays Gunstar Heroes together with me lol.^^

        •  Because games these days are way too powerful. If you let players play in one screen then the camera never works out for all players. If you try split screen you have to replicate that same game 4 times. Its really complex and would take away from development time.

This game would have indeed benefited better from online play though. No doubt about it. Maybe Dragon’s Dogma 2 if the first sells well?

    • badmoogle

Yeah call me crazy but i think the online features that Dragon’s Dogma has are much more interesting than the typical multiplayer many people ask for.

I hope more games in the feature implement online elements in such a seamless single player experience.

      •  I think Dragon’s Dogma took a leaf from online of Demon Souls/Dark Souls.

  • that’s a really clever use of online

  • Reno Evangelista

Reminiscent of Monster Hunter and it’s Elder Dragons. Oh, Capcom.

  • PK212

That is such a weird way to compensate for MP, why can’t we all just actually fight it together?

I sure hope setting your sights on the Caster roles won’t give you a big disadvantage. As much as I like spells, I’d like to be able to move and dodge with enough mobility.

Hopefully the job combinations have something as so in store.

  • This is actually shaping quite nicely, it’s looks like a more medieval version of Monster Hunter with some Souls/King’s Field elements.
