New DmC Devil May Cry Footage From E3 With Director’s Commentary

By Ishaan . June 7, 2012 . 4:17pm

Capcom recently streamed over 30 minutes of DmC Devil May Cry footage from the demo build of the game they have at E3. There are two parts to the demo—the first you’ve already seen before, but the second is new and consists of a boss fight. Both parts have director’s commentary from Ninja Theory’s Tameem Antoniades:

A few highlights to note in case you don’t want to watch the entire thing:

  • The HUD isn’t finalized. They want to make it so it gives you more feedback.
  • There are “a lot more” enemy types in the game.
  • There will be both more melee and gun-like weapons in the full game.
  • Certain weapons are more effective against certain enemies.
  • Dante’s face has changed a few times due to motion capture requirements.
  • This goes for other characters in the game, too. Over time, they shifted more toward the mocap actors that portray them.
  • On Turbo mode: Too early to talk about if there will be one. However, reaching S-ranking and upward with combos speeds up combat. (Referring to the regular game)

You can read our impressions of the E3 demo for the game here.

    >The HUD isn’t finalized

Oh, so there’s a chance we won’t have Tameem’s damn face looking at us the entire time?

    • Are you just fishing for stupid reasons to complain?

      • Kirbysuperstar2

Not really. Even if it wasn’t HIS face, having a gigantic black and white bust up of the main character on screen all the time is really stupid. Even more so when the boss fight in one of the trailers starts and it adds the boss’ face to it as well.

        • Spider-Man

The HUD faces irk me, too. I would have been fine with a health bar and Devil Trigger gauge. And a regular health bar with the enemy’s name over it for bosses.

          • MrRobbyM

It doesn’t bother me, but I think if you’re going to have a floating head on the screen, it should at least show emotion. Kind of like Kingdom Hearts or Tales games.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, they kinda made that the only way I’ll accept stationary faces lol. It was always cool how they reacted to stuff happening.

        • revenent hell

Im oblivious…I just noticed the faces haha…….I must be ubber slowwwwwww

  • Spider-Man

Looks interesting. I’ll still be giving this game a rental. Since I’m a starving college student. And I don’t want to give Capcom money. >_> Regardless, I’m not going to hate on this game if I haven’t even played it yet.

The HUD isn’t finalized? Great! They should make it smaller and remove Donte/boss faces. And add some color. Just my preference, though. They said before there would be a lot of other weapons. Hopefully it’s not a transformation for the Rebellion/Axe/Scythe weapon. I want to see something new. Like double bladed spears or something.

  • badmoogle

“Dante’s face has changed a few times due to motion capture requirements.”

    Haha yeah sure. :p

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Can’t wait for this game to release so all the morons can eat their words at how awesome it’ll be. “Hurr Ninja Theory durr” shut up, it’s looking fantastic, even if it is a bit different from what it was.

    •  can’t wait for this game to release so all the morons can say “a 7-8 is not a bad note”, and then wait a couple of months until it falls into oblivion like the rest of ninja theory games.
      no seriously, i cant wait.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

So you’re one of those people who read IGN like a bible and consider anything lower than a 9/10 to be a terrible game? Good for you then.

        •  no, im one of those people who is completely aware that an “8” by today standards mean a “6”, and i dont spend my money in  mediocre games unless there is something specially charming about them. And this bastardized highly commercial devil may cry is everything but charming.

          • FitzpatrickPhillips

So yeah I was right, anything below a 9 is considered mediocre, right? Go ahead and be a mindless drone to review scores and never use your own judgement or preference to influence your purchase. Just don’t complain when you miss out on great games, and don’t complain about games you’ve yet to play just because your hunnies IGN gave it a 8/10. Don’t even try the “by today’s standards” argument when it’s completely irrelevant because “by today’s standards” reviews are even more retarded than they once were.

          • “Go ahead and be a mindless drone to review scores and never use your own judgement or preference to influence your purchase. ”

-“and i dont spend my money in  mediocre games unless there is something specially charming about them”
you want a map so you can locate this part of my speech?

you want another reason why this game will suck, right, here is one
IS MADE BY NINJA THEORY AND DIRECTER BY A GUY WHO HATES BAYONETTA AND THE ORIGINAL “CUHRAZY” DANTE. now come  and explain to me how can you make a devil may cry game without crazy stuff.

  • Nathan_GreeneIV

I’m gonna see this one out. I’m not gonna rip on a game if I havent played it yet. Plus I’m willing to see how this all turns out with this whole Angel/Devil thing.
    Gameplay is Legit
Music Well I haven’t heard anything from this video maybe when it strikes the psn then I’ll have a go lol

  • LynxAmali

Not really digging the lack of a lock on feature. I really liked that because it allowed me to quickly chain combos between different enemies. I’m assuming it’s more automatic now?

Still probably giving this a rental at least.

  • Levin_Scorpius

For a game that seems to draw a lot of ire, it honestly doesn’t look that bad. My only real complaint from what I’ve seen here is that the animation doesn’t seem to “flow” very well at some points. To elaborate, I’m talking about the actions seem to happen very quickly and suddenly but not seamlessly. And how he shoots with the guns just feels kinda too stationary to me.

The HUD feels kinda… boring? Bland? Lifeless? Something like that I guess.

I really have no complaints Dante’s face here. It fits the kind of attitude he has that I’ve seen and he can be considered to be fairly attractive too. The outfit, on the other hand, could be better but eh…

Though I have never actually played a DMC game before and the only experience I have with the original games and Dante the First is a few clips and screenshots so what do I know?

    • MrRobbyM

I agree with you. Both the HUD and the shooting. I think they could make that flow better. The HUD could definitely be much more stylized too. Right now, I think they just wanted something basic that doesn’t distract the players and is easy to read but it’s a bit too basic.

  • MrRobbyM

I was already excited by the demo and the trailer but the interview makes it seem even more promising. My hands will be on the controller within minutes of the demo’s release. You can count on that.

  • Sperium3000

This thing of combat speeding up depending on how well you’re doing kind of reminds me of the level system in God Hand. Depending on how well you’re doing, you’d go from level 1 to level 4 and then level DIE. Thing is, it’s not you getting stronger with each level, but your enemies. If DMC has something similar then I aprove. Dynamic challenge is always a plus.

  • Souji Tendou

“On Turbo mode: Too early to talk about this. However, reaching S-ranking and upward with combos speeds up combat.”

Le what? If the game indeed speeds up because my style meter rank’s getting better this is one of the most ****** decision ever! Why not on Turbo mode constantly from the start of the game?

    • Sorry, this was on me. By “too early to talk about this,” they meant it’s too early to say if there will be a Turbo mode or not. The S-ranking thing applies to the regular game, so yes, it’s always there. I’ve re-worded that line to make it clearer.

      • Souji Tendou

Cool, thanks for making it more clear Ishaan.

    • MrRobbyM

Oh god. But yes, I agree.

  • Solomon_Kano

Turbo mode speeds combat up? I think… I think they just killed my main complaint with the combat. I was missing DMC’s sense of speed, but now they’ve tied it to the combo system. That’s actually pretty cool.

Still, I wish the HUD could borrow some personality from somebody. Yeesh. Gray and white everything? Not appealing.

My new main complaint (formerly secondary): the gunplay still looks wonky as all hell. I’d lament that Dante isn’t as stylish with it as before but, before even that, it just doesn’t look good. Something about it is just off for me. I dunno if it was the sound of his guns or the look of him shooting or what, but something about it is throwing me off.

Oh well. I’m eagerly anticipating the day we see a demo for this.

    • No no, they aren’t saying anything about Turbo mode or if there is one. They’re saying, in regular mode, S-rank combos make the game faster and more intense. The music ramps up, too. There’s a bit more about this here:

I’m gonna re-word that Turbo mode bit to make it clearer.

      • Oh. :<

        Well, I guess that's cool too. :X

      • Solomon_Kano

Ohh. Oh ok. Well, either way, I’m glad there’s something to speed combat up. Now I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what Turbo mode actually is.

    • Umar Jaeger

not like its anything new really, nier had the same, get over ten hit combo and your attack speeds up insanely. hopefully they do update the HUD it looks plain as hell, no pun intended because hell has more personality than that HUD

      • Solomon_Kano

I know it’s not new, it just fixed a problem I was having with this game.

  • revenent hell

They mentiond how he gave up smoking? Honestly that was one aspect that never botherd me.I dont see why they would have done that I mean the game is riddled with curses so what does it matter if he smokes or not? The game obviously is not for children given this.

This game aside ive never grasped why people have throw fits over charecters smoking. Any game ive ever played with a smoking charecter had killing of things in it,and thusly not rated E,  so I dont realy see how one is a more negative influence over the other and if parents are so worried over this why are you letting you kid play games not rated for them to play?. Ive yet to see people  petitioning to get the smoking caterpillar nocotine patches.

    • MrRobbyM

I think giving up smoking was a good decision. It would have been a bit too much imo. He’s already cursing every other word and he already looks like a punk. A cig would have just been trying too hard.

    • epy

I think the constant cursing makes it more juvenile, if anything.

    • British_Otaku

Actually, Dante isn’t supposed to smoke at all if you go and look at the foundation that the series creator set up for him.

“Series’ creator Hideki Kamiya has said that the titular character from the manga series Cobra by Buichi Terasawa
served as the basis for Dante’s personality. Kamiya based his idea of
Dante on what he perceived as “Stylish” — wearing a long coat to make
the character “showy” and a non-smoker, as Kamiya saw that as more cool.”

On topic, I find your argument appealing as it questions why we accept X (killing and fighting people and animals) but not Y (smoking and gambling – no harm done and kids can’t even do it for real thanks to ID systems). I want my Pokemon to have casinos! However, just because the game has the player doing worse than smoking doesnt mean we should make them smoke.

Also, the prior games were kid friendly language wise so I find it odd that this one wants to be House of the Dead Overkill.

      • revenent hell

Thank you for realising my point! I kinda thought it would have been lost amongst the prior views of this particular game.

I have played the DMC games befor and I do know why the creator did not have Dante smoke, mind you im not condoning it in this game either but I find it odd that one thing is better than the other.

I mean I swear and most people do, its more realistic to me in a game when one is flung out now and again because in some of the game circumstances I so would say **** this, but I think id rather see him smoke than have vulgarities thrown arround quite so blithely as is discribed of this game. I cant say I remember to many curses being flung out by my sisters friends (or my own as I got older)so I dont think the whole angstey teen thing is a valid enough reason  but they are there none the less and I just find it odd they would veto the smoking and yet keep the curses. It just dosent make sence to me.

There’s no dash. There’s kind of an air dash, but it’s really slow and doesn’t cover that much ground. Instead, they substitute it with grappling. That’s why it feels a bit slower to get from enemy to enemy.. or it feels different.

But yeah. The gameplay looks nice. Can’t wait to see some more weapons and play styles.

    • MrRobbyM

I just realized that as well. The grappling hook looks like a decent substitute. It will definitely be different though.

    • Nitraion

      You mean like dash style?
i wonder they added style lv system back…. it’s fun that way
also song and decent gun play sound effect that’s only problem for me

      • Yeah. I really hope there are multiple styles to play around with. But it looks like it’s going to be primarily weapon based.

        Who knows, who knows.

        • Nitraion

Well i dunno but it looks like heading that way….XD
i hope they added lv system to weapon or something…

          • Oh my goodness. That would be awesome. *__*

    • Solomon_Kano

Aha! I was trying to put my finger on why combat felt slower here, but there ya go. I guess getting an S rank speed boost is supposed to make up for that? Eh. Still looking good though.

  • Domii

I have a feeling a lot of people are gonna eat their words on January. This is looking like the best in the series since 3.

    •  -“I have a feeling a lot of people are gonna eat their words on January”, yeah, me too, im just thinking about another kind of people.

  • AzureNova

He’s still not the Dante I’ve know for years, but the game looks legit to me =^_^=

  • Shadowman

This game go hard like really hard I might get this game and many more but I can still get over the fact of that’s not dante but they gave us an even younger dante maybe when he was just young and never became a full fledged demon I mean think about it. I still remember the DmC4 game I couldn’t tell which it which they both have silver hair and they both kill demons.

  • takopako

oh my gosh. this looks like it will be really good. also, dante getting more attractive and less emaciated looking definitely helps!

  • Yesfir

This game totally looks just as amazing as I thought it would. I can’t wait~

  • Gaara D.Dragon

I cant believe they turned DMC into a hipster / teen angst fest and some people are falling for it.

Yeah go ahead buy this and kill DMC games for good.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Can’t believe you said hipster no one should take you serious now(╯°□°)╯ ┻━┻

    • takopako

He is way more punkish than hipster, sir.

    • MrRobbyM

I don’t think you know what hipster is, sir Dragon.

    • Tan Wei Lun

hipster? i dont see no giant plastic glasses :D

  • To be honest,

It looks quite good and I am gonna buy it.

Though I am wondering if they’re gonna do DLC crossover missions like Asura’s Wrath.
Not with other games but missions with boss battles against Classic Dante, Vergil and Nero.
And the in-fight banter we’ll hear xD

    • MrRobbyM

I’m certainly going to get the game as well but I want to see reviews first simply because it’s using Unreal and I’ll be getting the PS3 version. If that fails, then PC version it is.

  • Ahahaha this game is so laughable. The game tries to be mature by the amount of needless cursing. This game will get a M rating but the people who’ll dig this will be the angsty 11-16 y/o kids who think cursing is cool. Tamtam’s face on the HUD? The game will not cater to the classic DMC fanbase but a whole new class of people. Tameem said that DmC will have new and original concepts. Battle system resembles Heavenly Sword (30fps :D), the EASY-fied style system ala Tony Hawk Pro Skater (a downgrade actually). Dante’s guns look like they’re from Dark Watch which is so original and the inspiration from Divine Comedy (Dante’s Inferno). This game drew a lot of ire not because of these reasons but due to the fact that Tameem and Alex bashed the OG fanbase with their arrogant and smug attitudes.

    • MrRobbyM

I should really learn to stay away from DmC articles.

      • should we flag?

        Just kidding xD

        • MrRobbyM

I was considering it for a second there ^_^

    • British_Otaku

While I think the project is laughable, you should present your argument better so the people who see complaints can’t ignore us without looking bad. Poor presented arguments is the reason why sequels which disappointed or missed the mark like Ninja Gaiden 3, Mass Effect 3 or Ultimate Tenkaichi had demand in the first place.

The first thing you address should be the gameplay flaws in comparison to prior games. In this case, how taunting is gone, how two buttons are doing the same dodge and lock on is now automatic only. Heavy language use is something to note as well, in No More Heroes (Suda 51, top ten assassin story with otaku lead), it had it’s place from the beginning. You can go on from there and mention that Tameen and Capcom are being disrespect to the fanbase as well.

    • Levin_Scorpius

About the cursing, you do realize that their are a lot of people in real life who curse needlessly all the time right? Such words being thrown around like its some juvenile cafeteria food fight isn’t so much as it wants to be edgy and mature, but it trying to target an audience that’s used to hearing them be apart of everyday conversations with friends and the like (which is mostly people in their teens and twentys).

A lot of your complaints are sort just randomly placed and given no real support, reasoning, or any real sort of elaboration, so their just left to awkwardly hang their without any real purpose, ultimately having the strength of slip of notebook paper against a gun.

Also, you call people out on being arrogant and smug, yet your attitude presented here isn’t exactly making yourself look much better then them so you kind of invalidated the point you wanted to make there.

    • revenent hell

      Listen to british_otaku..
Im by no means a fan of this game simply based on its “beginings” and various..”drama” surrounding it with things said blah blah blah so ive attempted to give my reasons of dislike as well as I possibly can or the ones I think hold solid validity based on the gameplay ect ive seen…that said if it was named anything other than DmC I would buy it in a split second. The game does appear as it would be enjoyable to a certain extent and barring its roots it would probably be a day one for me(If they fixed the body structures to be more normal looking…Young female boobs do NOT hang that low-end hissyfit)

  • They’ve essentially ruined everything about Devil May Cry at this point. Now the combos are not based on skill, but he now has a set of “combos” that follow a set  path instead of being able interchange moves.

They basically just made the whole game Bayonetta Simple Mode. Launcher Button, just push one button to do an endless combo, when you do air combos, as long as you pressin the button you’ll just air combo endlessly.

DMC with no skill =/= DMC

    Enjoy your Heavenly Sword 1.5

    • I don’t think you know anything about this game at all. Combos are inter-changeable but they’re based on weapon switching. You create custom combos by switching weapons in the middle of them. The thing is, they haven’t shown more than two weapons so far, so I can understand why you might feel the new system is limiting.

      •  That isn’t interchanging MOVES to make combos that’s switching between fast or heavy combos. Just press the one button and a shoulder button and you’ll combo forever in this game.

Did you see the E3 playthrough? When an enemy gets launched you can just stay up there and air combo for like an hour.

This game’s combat system is basically just button mashing.

Just simply changing the look of the attack by pressing a shoulder button does mean there is combo building or skill going on. It’s like using a light or heavy attack in Dynasty Warriors; Mashing your way through hordes.

  • British_Otaku

It frightens me that unlike Ninja Gaiden 3, this is going to get some degree of critical acclaim. Both of them basically have a new team and new fundamentals for the gameplay and story which contridict prior titles. In this case, they rebranded the franchise completely (smart move if you want people to forget how it was like or hop on as if this was the first) and waited long enough that some people are actually pleased with the project independently despite missing features, a different engine, a lower framerate and completely different direction.

    • Solomon_Kano

The difference here is that this game looks to have a modicum of quality to it, unlike NG3. Where this stands in regards to prior games in the series has nothing to do with how critics should see it. If it’s good, it’s good. NG3 clearly was not.

Also: being that it’s meant to be a ground-up refresh for the series, there really can’t be any “missing features” just different ones; a different engine is to be expected when it’s in the hands of a dev that only knows one engine; and a different direction is the WHOLE point of a reboot. Lower framerate was the only actual complaint listed that any critics should have in mind once this game hits.

      • British_Otaku

I agree that this game seems to be a on a different level to NG3, though I see the first games of a franchise or style as core to judging whether a new title is respectable.

NG3 earned hatred for trying to push in a guilt driven plotline into games which even from the NES and Xbox sent you killing without a care in the world as everything is trying to kill you. It also took weaponry from the get go (free DLC is still bullshit), made gameplay easy and added a special technique which BOTH make you contridict the direction of the story and make it easier.

To someone who first played it or liked hack and slash games with crazy storylines (let’s say Dynasty Warriors), they might have liked it. I enjoyed Apollo Justice for my first AA game as someone who heard of the Objection fad from a distance and knew only that Phoenix Wright was a lawyer. Look at it after the prior games and despite it being a good project, it throws Phoenix Wright out of character, throws away the entire cast who may have appeared in the three original games or just in two of them and uses the DS features worse and less than the DS exclusive case in the first GBA port. It isn’t very good for an Ace Attorney game even if it is a very good visual novel.

I’m not convinced that it needed to be a reboot on that note, or at least one which chooses to abandon the original franchise in the ways it has. Good sales so far, an established style for four games with a single voice actor for 2 (plus Marvel vs Capcom 3) for Dante then this…

Being a good game isn’t good enough. It needs to be good within the franchise to satisfy the original audience. Even if that means following a formula to an extent.

        • Solomon_Kano

The main thing with Ninja Gaiden 3 was that it was just out ant out a bad game though. Even if the prior two NG games hadn’t existed it would’ve sucked. Regardless of what changed, regardless of story, it just wasn’t good at all.

Mind you, I wasn’t referring to satisfying the fans. I was responding to you mentioning critics. Critics shouldn’t take that into account. Fans? That’s up to them. From a professional standpoint though, the game should be judged on its own merits.

Now, me personally, I’ll have DMC in mind when I play DmC. I don’t feel like they’ve changed too much necessarily, but it’s about what in particular they have changed. Sparda’s been mentioned, but why is Dante part angel now? He has Ebony, Ivory, and Rebellion but why is his DT so bland? As a fan of DMC I’ll think these things when playing DmC, but these things will only determine if it stands as a good DMC game. If DmC absolutely ignores or destroys everything I loved about DMC but is still a good game in its own right, I’ll be the first to admit it. It just won’t be a good DMC game. That’s how I see it.

          • Tan Wei Lun

i felt that ng3 was an unfinished game. the final game would be on the wii u. i mean, they left out other ninpo, mutilations, they had an updated character growth system AND they periodically added optional weapons on the psn? WHICH WE HAVE TO PAY FOR? its more than obvious they had a deadline and they didnt reach it. :D

          • Solomon_Kano

It was unfinished, yea, but even the Wii U version won’t cut it for me. Beyond the stuff they took out of the previous games, NG3 just didn’t play the same as NG or NG2.

  • Christopher Nunes

OK, originally I wasn’t happy with the game especially after that the developers originally did to Dante in this reboot DmC game (originally called a sequel) and how they were handling as well… but after seeing this trailer I’ve changed my mind a bit.

I looks speculator and quite the fun game, and combat seems since and there’s seem to be depth to the combos like the original DMC series (I’ve only cleared DMC1 Stage 1 so far… haven’t gotten far yet) even though the original DMC game seems faster than this one it still holds its in combat speed.

Dante changing his entire body and clothing colors to mimic the original Dante is quite interesting when the Devil Trigger is engaged and the fighting during it is nothing short of speculator and awesome beat-down, but to me this is still not the same Dante and I know that’s what they’re going for. I kinda like the voice and his line in the beginning was quite funny… “I am now” with the guy saying you’re not on the list. That was good.

However I know people tend to swear a lot, I’ve been around people who swear but NOT a whole lot like in this game and the movies I’ve seen like the Aliens didn’t curse as much as this game even if it is normal in real life. They could’ve toned it down a bit, swearing does get its point across when used correctly when someone is angry or looks down on someone but don’t use it conservatively for just swear for swearing sake and only use it when it fits correctly with the scene. Too be honest I’m 23 years old and I don’t swear, except the occasional “damn” and “hell” (even though Hell is a place as well) and I rare and almost never say the other words… heck I don’t even say the F-bomb, never had never will.

I’ll admit I don’t know how I feel about the HUD with the face icon of Dante… I mean KH’s has that but it also has the HP and MP bars as well and Sora’s face changes when he’s hit or badly hurt… this, not exactly cutting it in this game. A normal HP and Energy bar would be alright and I’m glad that’s not the final HUD build.

My connection speed is so bad I have to wait for more than a more minutes just to get a few seconds loaded on the YouTube video and I have to play it to continue streaming and once it hits the point where the video stops and waits to stream again I have to wait EVEN longer than the video itself just to watch it! I mean the video doesn’t continue to stream until the video is fully loaded and I have to continuous play, pause, and repeat until its done which is awful and annoying, which takes so long for me to watch these videos and review them and another reason why it took me so long to comment after having this video up yesterday!

I like the weapon switching, which I think it a really cool ability, and Dante using the Angel Lift and Demon Pull to grab onto enemies and such to pull towards them or them towards Dante to beat them down is quite fun especially when going airborne!

The boss fight looks really great with the cinematic bits but not taking without the gameplay during it that much is a nice touch. It does look fun and challenging for the most part, and hopefully not too easy or boring with the new combat mechanics and hopefully there’s more difficulty settings.

I’ll admit my opinion of this game has improved since when it was unveiled before, and I’m starting to think that maybe 1.5 million copies of this game selling worldwide isn’t such an impossible feat after all given what’s shown here but it might not sell exactly 1.5 million copies. I, for one, will definitely love to try this game out even renting it from GameFly to see if it fits my tastes.

All in all, I’ll pass final judgement on the game when it comes out and I do say it’s shaping up quite nicely and Ninja Team is doing an excellent job so far with this title.
