Hey Frayne, Wake Up. Growlanser: Wayfarer Of Time Comes Out On July 31

By Spencer . June 19, 2012 . 12:33pm

While Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time was nowhere to be found at E3, the PSP version is still on track for a summer release. Atlus will release Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time in stores and on PlayStation Network on July 31. In this game you play as Crevaniel, a mercenary who lives in a medieval world, which lies on top of scientific advances from two millennia ago. That’s why the game has sci-fi-esque familiars in it.

Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time (actually, the fourth entry in the series) has been enhanced with new characters, story branches, and endings. Since this is the first English release, I suppose everything is new for North America.

Had me worried there for a while, but glad to see that everything is in order. My PSP will finally get some love after a longer break. ^^

  • cj_iwakura

Hmm, different font from II/III and V. I miss the older font, but this is fine too.

  • English screens and release date :3 *Neeeeds*

  • Thank you! its on dics. i wil be getting this day 1

  • doubleO7

Man, I love Urushihara’s artwork. Its fantastic. Its too bad that, aside from the Growlanser games, he hasn’t really done much else besides hentai for several years…

    • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

He has made artwork for the Langrisser series too, like the Big Bro of growlanser.

      • doubleO7

Yes, but that was earlier. I was talking about now. There hasn’t been a new Growlanser since 07′ IIRC, so aside from the new content in the PSP version of Wayfarer, he hasn’t really been doing anything besides porn. Its probably well-drawn and detailed porn, but still, thats wasted talent if you ask me.

        • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

You are right, hopefully if team career make a new growlanser or a new IP they will ask Urushihara help again.

        • revenent hell

I dont think its a wasted talent if A) he enjoys doing the work and B) hes getting paid to do it,profit is a profit.
Just because you dont think highly of hentai as an art dosent mean he genuinely dosent enjoy doing it and I say this because when I was drawing doing this type was just as enjoyable as doing something rated E or PG if not more so because it was different…Its just as pleasing work as anything else when you do it because you enjoy it. I dont think any talent is a waste if the person enjoys what they are doing you know?

        • gaiahatergaia

Wasted talent? What the hell? his works get serialized in magazines that print and sell millions of copies, my good sir.

Being able to draw hentai art is a gift that not many can easily achieve, calling it a waste of talent is pretty ignorant.

          • Suicunesol

Actually, I don’t think it’s a waste of talent either, but I haven’t seen Urushihara actually do something special with his artwork in a looong time, be it drawing a new manga series or creating game artwork or what. I think it’s important for artists to utilize their skills in creative ways (creating art for something) so they can improve themselves. But he’s only been drawing magazine covers and nothing else for years. :/

It’s because of this that I feel like he’s dropped off the map, somewhat. :(

Then again, he’s almost fifty-years old, so maybe he’s retiring from big projects like that… :O

          • revenent hell

Well if one can afford to not work…why not relax? :D

          • Suicunesol

^_^; Well, he can relax. But I tend to revere those who continue to produce until the day they die. And, well, for an artist of his caliber I always expect more.

        • Ladius

Aside from the whole “waste of talent” thing, I agree with you that it’s a real shame his character design skills haven’t been used in new games.

I dream of a decent budget cel shaded game able to faithfully portray his style without recurring only to in-game artworks, but sadly Career Soft is probably working on a far, far tighter budget than niche companies like Gust or Idea Factory, and I even doubt we will see a low budget handheld Growlanser 7 if something doesn’t happen in the near future, considering Index (through Atlus) is the one making all the decisions :

          • revenent hell

            Totally agree

  • l777l

Yes; thanks for such updates. I would’ve missed Gungnir.

  • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

Finally english screenshots, im eager to play it now, i just got the JP version and the game is great.

We must make this game succeed to allow atlus to localize 1.

    • Ladius

I think the Growlanser 1 PSP ship has sailed long ago, it’s nice enough to have a complete script that anyone can use to enjoy the game, not to mention menus are really simple. If anything, I hope Career Soft is able to work on a new Growlanser games (or on a new game, period) in the future, as low budget as it could be.

      • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

I prefer Growlanser 7 or a new IP, but so much people are losing the chance to play a awesome game that Growlanser 1 is.

  • TheCynicalReaper

Is this Siliconera exclusive info? I ask because Atlus has yet to put up a real site for the game and the only news mail I’ve gotten for its games has been for Gungnir and
    anything P4-related.

I’ll trust you guys to have good info. Man, I’m SO excited for this game! I’ve got the money already waiting to shove into Wayfarer. Wish they’d put up a full site for it already so I can stop staring at that placeholder in anticipation.

    • Kevadu

It’s actually pretty common for Atlus to send stuff out to the media before they send it to their mailing list. (Which sometimes makes me wonder why I’m on the mailing list…) The only difference here is that this game is below the radar of most of the bigger sites so that’s why the first place you’re seeing it reported is Siliconera.

      • TheCynicalReaper

I get you, then. I often found Atlus sent out the info to the “Faithful” within a day or so after the press got to it, so that’s why I was confused. Wonder why the folks at Atlus didn’t fix up the site for this game yet, though.
Maybe that’s why Atlus has a job posting for a web graphic designer.

  • Shadow_Raskolnik

It’s too bad that this won’t be playable on the Vita upon release, but at least I can still play the UMD on my old PSP (hopefully the UMD drive won’t die on me yet).

  • So many awesome strategy RPGs that I have to acquire. This and Gungnir had been at the top of my list as soon as Atlus announced them and I will definitely be going after this before KH:3D on the 31st of July. Granted that could just be due to my insane love for my PSP.

As to the screens. The game looks gorgeous. Especially when it comes to the character designs. I’d love to find out more that this artist has worked on.

    • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

      Langrisser series (videogames)

And LOTS of hentai (Wich im fan of course).

      Lodoss war (anime)

    • Suicunesol

Satoshi Urushihara. Manga artist and staff member of some older, less-known anime. He’s most well-known for his female character designs, for obvious reasons. He also has a very distinctive style when it comes to drawing eyes, so it’s easy to tell his artwork apart.

His manga series aren’t bad either. Dark sci-fi and fantasy. Drawings are pretty, but it’s not for everyone.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t worked on too many games.

Be warned if you do serious research on him– the majority of his artwork is NSFW (at all).

  • PizzicatoSpirit

I can’t wait for this to come out and to play it!
Though first I have to get Gungnir which has already been released.

  • LynxAmali

    Be right back.

Replaying Dual Darkness, Sense of Justice and Heritage of War.

    This will be glorious.

  • 16 comments? Seems like the hype is down now that it’s been announced and gotten a release date and everything. Why am I not surprised?

    • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

This is the result when you publish so Big news in a little site like this, BAD move ATLUS.

      • Hraesvelgr

Sadly, I’m not really sure a niche JRPG on an unpopular platform (in the west) can be considered “big news”…

  • Brandon001

is this psn only? i ask bc maybe atlus will release Eternal punishment on PSN only, that’d be great

    • LynxAmali

How would that be great, if you mind me asking?
You’re alienating a base of possible customers.

As for your original question; It’s getting both a physical and PSN.

    • Ladius

It’s being published both on UMD and on PSN, and I think it’s very likely EP will receive the same treatment later this year considering it’s a Persona game.

  • Carocaro4

Hey i don’t know much about this game. Can some one be so kind as to inform me about it?

  • Hoshi星

Same release date as Kingdom Hearts DDD, eh? MORE RPGS!!!

  • Eilanzer

    GOD….Finally hear my pray!!!! o/

  • I think I’ll be taking the day off on 7/31. Just speculating…

  • Wake me up when it’s out.

  • revenent hell

Well I for one hope that with this release we MIGHT get Growlanser I and VI at some point but more than VI I think the first game is a higher priority(and its been done for the psp) Eh I cant beg enough but hopefully my purchase of this is insentive in a way? Since I dont have a Vita and there are no games for it that have me hyped enough to go buy one im super fine with it being on the PSP,or even the psn…hmm id buy a Vita if it meant getting the game….
Im just anal what can I say its like a collectors habbit mabey?

    • Ladius

Growlanser 6 is a PS2-only game, and even a port is unlikely considering they would need to port G5 first since they’re linked. Growlanser 1 has probably been discarded because of its rather outdated graphics (personally I love them just as I loved the game itself, but I can see the issue with most gamers) and less complex battle system compared to the newer entries in the franchise. In this regard, Growlanser 4 is probably the best traditional Growlanser game ever, since it has the rich, complex narrative of 1, its explorations (very different from 2 and 3’s) and a revised battle system with some new mechanics.

But yeah, even for me supporting this franchsie is absolutely imperative, that’s why I’m double dipping at day one :P

      • revenent hell

Oldschool graphics dont bother me I kinda was arround durring the time so I look upon them lovingly I guess and I agree about VI I realy wish they would have done that particular game befor the ps3 was so well bought…..Honestly I would have to highly question buying V again if it was ported……But id do it for EP so hmmmm IDK I know VI is a direct sequal but how is it affected by V’s gameplay choices? If its not a major impact…I want to keep my small hope lol

        • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

Is a direct sequel of 5, the only thing that would affect your game is that you can port Hashen stats and levels and current equipped weapons, the only way to obtai his ultimate weapon and armors.

          • revenent hell

Hmmmmm id live without it just to get the game. It only took me 4 seconds to think it threw to:)

  • Wackoramaco87

I can’t wait to get my hands on this- my first Growlanser game, yaay!

  • Learii

is this a real time battle system?

    • Oscar Alberto Abrego Suarez

Yes you can issue command whenever you want.

  • Ladius

Nice to see one of my most hyped games of 2012 resurface, I have already preordered two copies and I hope this can be at least a moderate success in order to show Atlus USA that the niche audience can still be a profitable venue for their localization efforts.

Considering how G4 blends Trails in the Sky-like explorations and real time tactical battle, I think any jrpg fan out there should give it a try, not to mention its plot is completely independent from previous entries.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Yeahhh.^^ More for Satoshi Urushihara goodness is coming here.^^
I hope this game will be succesful and provide better chances if a new Growlancer titles is release to come over here.^^

  • Kevin Lor

Preorder this game last month for me :)

  • need more D-LN…..
