JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle Game Headed To PlayStation 3 [Update]

By Ishaan . July 4, 2012 . 11:27pm

CyberConnect 2 are developing a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure game for Namco Bandai, set for release on the PlayStation 3. Given CC2’s specialty, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this is a fighting game. You can view a trailer for it below (skip to the 52:45 mark):

In case you’re wondering, this is indeed what Namco Bandai’s “All Star Battle” tease was for. The game is titled JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle. At the same event that Namco announced the game, they also announced a new anime series scheduled to air in Japan this October.

Update: Updated with proper trailer: You can view the announcement event here.

    •  Pinch? Road Roller Da may suffice.

    • Testsubject909

Well… I can throw a Steam Roller on you if you want.

  • z_merquise

Seeing those rapid punches in Asura’s Wrath, CyberConnect can make those “Ora Ora Ora” and “Muda Muda Muda” punches an awesome sight. (Are they shown in the video? Can’t watch it right now.)

Though I only read the first 3 stories in the series (Phantom Mask, Battle Tendency and Stardust Crusaders) I’m still looking forward to this.

    Joseph Joestar for the win!!!

  • Muffum

Is it wrong that I want to have sex with those graphics?

If so, I’m okay with being wrong.

  • malek86

A new anime? Like, from the start and through all the arcs? Oh man, this better be it, and not just a short 13 episodes series.

  • Will this see a localization whatnot with all the copyrighted names?

  • evilmoogle

yes sirs.  It was supposed to come to the U.S. too but was canceled…

  • MrKappa

    Oh my god….
Please don’t screw this game up with your mediocrity CC2.

I mean really, a JJBA game on PS3 that covers all parts? I know the story is gonna be awesome as hell, CC2 can’t go wrong there. All the posing is fabulous as well but… you know what? I don’t even care anymore, this game is gonna be awesome.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Naruto only pays the bills sir, so they can spend their time with this and gems like Solartrobo.

      • DemonKingAsura

Lol, their Naruto Games are already Gems, because they genuinely love the series.

This along with all their games, will be gems as well.

        • Asura

If you mean their Naruto games are gems in the sense of SFxT gems, then yes.

          They are both just awful.

  • jujubee88

I still remember the DC version!

Also, the gfx look a lot like SfxT for the VITA (but this is on the darker colored side). Hmmm. I wonder.

  • One word:

    • ivanchu77

  • akeboshi

I’ll be importing it once it’s first available, since I doubt this will get localized.

  • Laharl

  • This looks sick!

  • Spider-Man

    • d19xx

      …and Za Warudo!

  • ivanchu77

So happy with these news! , had so much fun with the psx version back in the day.

    • Guest

I see no ones played the PS2 or SNES games huh…

      • Brandonmkii

I’ve played the ps2 games. They were okay at best. Fun for a little while, at least.

  • rinalicat

All the Jojo Arcs?! Oh. My. God. Oh. My. God. OH. MY. GOD. THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER AND I NEED IT NOW. This is going on my import list! Right above Tales of Xillia (Jude, I love you but my love for Josuke is stronger, my love…)

    • SeventhEvening

Well….the current arc is missing ;<

      • rinalicat

Oh yeah! How did I forget that? It must be the awesomeness of the trailer dazzling me…

    • KyoyaHibari

Xillia…really? This is LEAGUES beyond Xillia already.

      • rinalicat

Okay, I know it’s better BUT I have been thinking of importing Tales of Xillia when I get enough money for months now so…JJBA is a fantastic fighter game while Tales of Xillia is a fantastic JRPG! With TOX heading to EU, I don’t have to worry so much and I’m focusing on this game to import!

        • KyoyaHibari

For one, Xillia has recently been announced for North America (and EU as well I guess) from what I read on Kotaku I believe, and second, where are you hearing that it is good? Everyone is hyped up about Xillia, but there’s the small percentile of people who actually KNOW the details of the game. From what it seems, everyone is judging Xillia by its ‘cover’. Yes the graphics are pretty and the combat is ok, but beyond that it supposedly has the least amount of content of any Tales game, very crappy dungeons and exploration, one of the worst Tales protagonists to date (Jude) and various other notable shortcomings. I can’t remember the details, but people need to get their heads straight about Xillia and stop obsessing over it. I’ve heard people go so far as to buy Tales of Graces F JUST to help localize Xillia; that’s just downright preposterous! Read the Tales of Graces or Xillia boards on GameFAQs to get the details, but needless to say, you have been warned…

          • rinalicat

Hm…well, I’m not phased really. I appreciate your warning BUT I am one of those people who will play anything really (at least once, even if it’s crappy) and I’ve been excited for Xillia for ages so…seriously, I am a HUGE Sengoku Basara fan girl and that game series is as repetitive as HELL but I still enjoy strolling onto loosely historical battle fields with funny dialogue and running away in total terror from Honda Tadakatsu (it’s a long story…basically, I am terrified of this guy in whatever version of fiction based on the Sengoku Period he appears in)

  • Sardorim

This series could use a new breath of fresh hair. I remember playing the games as a kid. Such precious memories…

  • Wow, started reading this not too long ago and now this? Epic coincidence~

  • Now I kind of want to seek out the game on the PS1…for nostalgia’s sake.

  • Aoshi00

Looks awesome, love CC2 and Asura’s Wrath (people must get the epic Chapter 4 DLC).  Looks like this is a 2D fighter instead of 3D too.. Pls pls do Kenshin next and give it a much better game it deserves, and not the PSP garbage..

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Wow, this is better than what I was expecting. Awesome!

  • Speedo Redempteur

Trailer looked very cool … i guess it’s time to read the manga …

    • Testsubject909

      Check the anime too.

The stage looked a little dull, but everything else looked great.  I want to see the anime now.

  • Battle system looks A LOT like KoF Max Impact….This is gonna be fun as heck…

  • Göran Isacson

Aaaawwww yyyeah, Fabulous Fighting Game is well and truly fabulous. Combining all the Jojo-arcs into one fighting game is an idea so awesome I am compulsively posing in my seat right now, and news of an anime just makes it even more amazing…. though the chances of this getting a localization don’t look too good, what with Jojos being rather obscure here in the West. Namco Bandai, I’m hoping for a miracle here…

  • Domii

    Wow this looks very good.

  • sasuke222

    Looks good to me

  • MrRobbyM

That looked pretty and awesome. Pretty awesome.

  • Yeah more than likely, I might add this to the import list. I have some of the manga to this series & I think it’s great. Especially the way the PS1 version went along with the story or Super Story Mode as it was called because it was much more than your average story mode with so much variety in the gameplay for a fighting game.

Unless I missed something, I don’t ever remember this series being popular over here but Capcom released a game that’s easily one my favorites, because it shows that guys who made that game had mad love for the series.

  • SeventhEvening

This is the best thing that could ever happen.

Well…if it contained Jojolion is would be perfect.

      ZA WARUDO!

  • Well this came out of no where.

  • Looks beautiful.  Cyberconnect really knows there stuff, huh?  Played the Naruto fighting game and loved it.  Was blown away by how fluid it looked and felt.  I don’t even like Naruto.

  • DuskSharkEX

Must have this game. I’ll import if I have to…but I’m kinda hopeful for a US release. Dunno why, though.

  • British_Otaku

It looks nice but I feel wary of CC2’s fighting projects which use the NUNS formula. Maybe, I’m not the one to speak as my knowledge is through .gifs, seeing game clips, Jump Superstars and of course people screaming “ZA WARUDO” and stuff.

However, being grounded, enclosed in a circle with the simple NUNS scheme doesn’t interest me even if it has improved and this, NUNS3 and Hack Vs will probably be different when I get to see more of them or play them.

Happy to see more manga/anime getting game projects on consoles, the portables have been having a monopoly.

  • Tales_of_Master

My god my body was not ready for this. A new JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime series ? A new JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure game ? For the PS3 ? MADE BY CC2 ??? This can’t get any better. I started reading JJBA a few years ago and I only recently finished Stardust Crusader. I was taking my time with it, but since the anime is starting on October, I’ll just wait to see how the show turns out. Defiantly getting this game, JP or US…

    • Testsubject909

      Now that you know…

      Make your body ready.

  • Istillduno

Art looks amazing, nice to see the arcs before the 3rd acknowledged.

But Cyberconnect12 kills a lot of my hype.

Yes I know they’ve done fighting games before, those are why my hype for this is lying dead in the gutter right now.

    • Tales_of_Master

CC2 knows how to make amazing anime fighters. If you want a compatitve fighting game, look somewhere else. I like competitive fighters, but anime games have no place in competitive scenes. Let CC2 make their awesome over-the-top fighters, and let the competitive fighters for Capcom and other specialized developers.

      • Asura

Why do anime games have no place in competitive scenes? Your post fails to include any rationale to this oddball statement.

        • Tales_of_Master

I thought my statement was clear enough. My bad though, obviously you need some explanation. Anime games are for the most part a fan-service. Making a competitive fighting game meaning in needs to be balanced. Making a balanced fighter means toning the over-the-top anime stuff, which is a huge disservice to these kind of games. The Budokai Tenkaichi games and the UNS games are among the best anime games because they capture the feeling of their respective shows. The end result was an enjoyable experience for fans of the shows – who actually matter – but an unbalanced gameplay, which is something to be expected. Great fan-service and balanced competitive gameplay just don’t mash together.

          • KyoyaHibari

Yes it is true that anime based games are essentially just fanservice, but it’s not like everyone WANTS it that way. It would be nice if a company would challenge this trope and make an advanced fighter that appeals to both fans of the series and has a fighting engine that is accessible to hardcore fighting game fans. I find that the Tenkaichi series was fairly well balanced, and the gameplay was deep enough to perhaps stand amongst the core fighting games, regardless of how unorthodox the actual engine itself was. With CC2 however, seeing how poorly balanced Storm 2, Generations and even perhaps some aspects of the original Ultimate Ninja series were, I wouldn’t get my hopes up too much for this game, but it seems like a fun game nonetheless. Granted, seeing that .hack Versus was more balanced than Generations, perhaps there may be hopes that this game could be great and transcend the tragic norm. Perhaps CC2 focuses more on the core gameplay when it comes to less mainstream series’ seeing how .hack was much more varied and balanced than Generations, so I’ll still be looking forward to it!

          • Tales_of_Master

Just to be clear, I love fighting games, in fact it’s my most favorite genre along with RPG. I’m not against depth in Anime fighters, but if it wasn’t there I will never whine about it. We already have a gazillion competitive fighters as it is, I don’t think it’s a great lose if this turns out like UNS. Also, this game doesn’t even look similar to UNS, it’s actually more similar to SF4. If a game like SSBB managed to find a place in the competitive scene, any game can be competitive. What makes balancing an Anime fighter extremely hard, is the fact the Anime character are not balanced themselves. Anime games are made as a pure fan-service, so the developers NEED to incorporate as much elements from the source material as they can, regardless of balance. Unlike SF and Tekken where the developers make their own ideas for powers and abilities, Anime fighters don’t have that luxury. They need to take the characters and their abilities that where meant to be for manga and anime, and make it work as a game. Do you see how hard that is ? Asking them to make it balanced on top of everything else is just asking too much. In JoJo you have guys who can move at light speed or guys who can STOP TIME, how do you suggest they balance that ? Would you rather have an Anime fighter that is balanced but doesn’t incorporate the things you love from the source material ? Or a fun, outlandish game that isn’t meant to be competitive ? I choose the later myself. Not to mention that even the so called “competitive” games are horribly unbalanced themselves.

          • KyoyaHibari

@A:disqus It is still possible to balance the characters, and just because a character may be more powerful in an anime/manga (or a certain aspect of their abilities is superior to someone else’s) doesn’t mean they can’t or shouldn’t hinder or balance them for the sake of the game. Allow me to propose something: would it be more likely that someone would nitpick about the canonical abilities of a character in a game not being up to par with the series or would they complain about characters being cheap? Rarely do I hear people talk about how a certain character should be faster or stronger in a game to match their source material abilities as opposed to people complaining that one character can easily trump the rest with hardly any skill.

The Storm series itself is a notable example of something that abandons BOTH of these principals which is why they are despised by some of the more hardcore or honourable players. An obvious pick in this case would be Deidara, he’s arguably one of the weaker members of the Akatsuki, but in the Storm games, he’s easily one of the cheapest and can outmatch both the canonically powerful characters and some of the game’s more useful characters. Relentless projectile spam that has practically full map range with homing and that is fairly hard to dodge can beat even the most devoted player if they play their cards right.

I personally find that it is much better to have characters who are balanced, even for the sake of being canonically stronger than another, because it doesn’t actually affect the overall experience of the competition which is the focus of fighting games may it be anime fighter or name brand fighter. This is the reason a lot of people hate the Storm games and the community in general because the games are SO unbalanced that people don’t even try to become skilled at the game and choose one of the strongest fighters in place of one of their series favourites, because of this, competition has become so superficial that skill and favouritism for characters has been thrown out the window to instill a pitiful sense of strength and dominance with ease and ruins the overall spirit of the genre.

What fun is it to compete with skill and honour through all the hard work you put into making amazing combos and strategies if a handful of characters out of like 70 can easily mop the floor with all of the other characters and the time & effort that you wasted to perfect those moves? Needless to say, the Storm games aren’t balanced in terms of damage canonically either, almost every combo, shuriken, jutsu and ultimate of every character does the same amount of damage, and it’s all a matter of working with whoever is the most flexible or even cheap with their movesets, and with that whole aspect of damage balancing completely ignored, it decreases the diversity amongst the characters, and in turn, STILL makes them not canonically weighted. Obviously a Chidori or something would easily be more powerful than say, Shadow Stitching, but they do nearly the EXACT same damage.

I’m not a fan of Street Fighter, and while it has its characters that OBVIOUSLY are OP and SHOULD be taken out of the games *cough Blanka & Zangief cough*, it does a fair job of balancing the rest all the while maintaining a fairly accurate canon scaling (which could be what hinders it), and as much as I loathe Capcom, they consistently balance their characters for the most part to encourage more diversity online (save for all the Ryu & Ken tards). Besides the occasional Ryu & Ken, when I was an SSF4 fan, I saw a huge variety of characters with people using Rose, Dan, Fei, Sakura, you name it, you could probably see almost everyone being used. While Capcom needs to get their head out of the gutter with the aforementioned OP characters, I still commend them for their devotion to making their game fairly even and for making a game where skill can triumph over spam and cheap tactics (for the most part). If you want an example of a TRULY balanced fighting series, than Virtua Fighter pretty much hits the nail on the head, and if other games could ascertain that level, we would see a much larger influx of skilled and devoted players in fighters.

I myself still need to start reading JoJo myself, but perhaps I recommend that CC2 hinder some of the characters’ abilities for the game to be a tad more realistic in terms of gameplay and intensity in the match. So maybe the characters could SLOW DOWN time for a limited period and have things like light speed incorporated into some of their techniques or combos rather than just zipping all over the place or something. When it comes to being more true to the source material, I think people would be more willing to accept compromise than you think, (not with Storm though) and given that Jojo probably has a more mature fanbase anyways, I think they would be more accepting of limitations for the sake of the game’s experience. If the character’s movesets and abilities are relatively in tact, I don’t think people should find reason to complain that much, just so long as we don’t have another Storm problem with balance.

As I mentioned earlier, .hack Versus, also made by CC2, does a much better job than the Storm series: i.g. Kite’s Data Drain ultimate does ~30% health damage but turns the character into a low level monster for weaker stats whereas Tsukasa flat out obliterates the opponent with his guardian doing ~60% damage. With stuff like this in mind along with other balances Versus has, CC2 probably could pull off a genuinely good fighter and if I was more acquainted with the series, I could give more notable examples, but you get the gist. ;)

          • British_Otaku

Fanservice and gameplay with some degree of depth (balance is subjective) can easily mash together. The example you gave, the Budokai Tenkaichi games have plenty of depth within the varying followups, exclusive blasts (changing speed, frequency, power and properties like cutting through guard) and such.

It isn’t on a Budokai or Clash of Ninja level (which both still provide fanservice through characters, techniques and the like) but NUNS to a large degree gives everyone minimal differences.

          • Guest

Budokai games and Super DBZ were both pretty solid and deep fighters traditionally though
