Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix Screenshots Provide A Closer Look At The HD Remaster

By Ishaan . October 4, 2012 . 9:10am

We’ve already seen a trailer for Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix (watch it here, in case you missed it), and now we have the first screenshots of the game, courtesy, who posted a few along with an interview with series creator, Tetsuya Nomura. You can find some of them below, and more here.

As previously reported from Famitsu’s interview with Nomura, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix will use Sora’s model from Kingdom Hearts 3D. The gameplay, according to Nomura, has also been adjusted to play more similarly to Kingdom Hearts II.

Speaking of Kingdom Hearts II, Nomura also hinted that Square Enix will follow Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix up with an HD remastered version of Kingdom Hearts II at some point. He also mentioned that Square wanted to do a remake of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, but didn’t have the time to make it happen.

  • Dyne

so Kingdom Hearts II and Hearts 358/2 Days for the next remake then?

    • Rick R

No, Kingdom Hearts II, Birth By Sleep.

    • Mister_Nep

If this release is anything to go by. It’ll be 2, and Birth by Sleep as a remake, and Dream Drop Distance as cutscenes only.

That’s what I think will happen.

      • Solomon_Kano

We’ll likely have the cutscenes from Re:Coded as well.

    • LightZero

KH2FM, BbSFM, and Re:Coded HD cutscenes. They would likely leave KH3D alone for the time being anyway since it just recently came out.

  • malek86

The CoM screenshots look a lot less HD for some reason.

  • Xekyo

I’m too excited for this game.  That’s just gonna make the wait feel even longer.  This sucks.  T_T

  • Göran Isacson

ooh, did Castle Oblivions walls have that many details in Re:Com? Kinda looks like they’re inside some planthouse with a ton of white leaves covering the walls.

I hope they retain the tech points in this game. I think it was a nice way to not only reward a player for pulling of neat tricks, but also demonstrate “secrets” such as how to block, or when an enemy is extra vulnerable, and so forth. Also also- wonder if the MP system is the same in this game as it was in KH 1, or if it will be more like KH2 regenerating MP meter.

    • Barrylocke89

The meter that we see looks more like the KH1 meter, so it looks like it may be closer to that system. It makes me wonder just how KH2-ish this game is going to become.

      • Göran Isacson

As long as they don’t go all out with Triangle Moves, I’m okay with having them make things somewhat more KH2-like. Really, the biggest thing I liked in KH1 was a slower pace in the battle system that allowed you to earn tech points and actually SEE your opponents moves and such. KH2 felt too fast. You hammered attack buttons and triangle buttons whenever it flashed, and you seldom had to worry about timing or observing your enemy. Cutting some fat from KH1= okay. Making it a mash-fest = less okay.

  • A Vita Port would have made me more pleased. :3

    • Kefkiroth

If they made a Vita remake along with the PS3 remake in a bundle for Cross Buy I’d be all over it.

  • Spirit Macardi

I really don’t think they should remake 358/2 Days. After all, it’s a DS title which means you can play it just fine on current-gen hardware since the 3DS is fully backwards compatible. Plus converting it to PS3 would mean a loss of the second screen features.

Now, what should get an upgraded port is Birth by Sleep. It’s a PSP game that’s only available on disc (Square has even said it will never be on PSN), so it isn’t compatible with the Vita at all. Add to it there was a Final Mix version that we never got overseas, so a port would give us access to that extra content.

    • elvergudo666

       yeah emulators are great

      • Spirit Macardi

Where did I mention emulators? O.o

    • I actually think the reason theres no remake is the diffrence in consoles.(they’d have to remake all the controls cut out the split screen, etc…) It’s just to much work to actually be worth it.

If this is what you were trying to say then I apologize for wasting your time with this reply.

  • Ryan Chiu

If they make a Kingdom Hearts II HD, will that be the Final Mix version?

    • StarWarudo

      Most likely.

  • KHSoraKeyBlade

The new screens were very cool looking. I can’t wait to hear more about it over the next few months. Hopefully it gets an early 2013 release like KH3D got earlier this year.

In other news, I can’t wait to try the PC browser game they are working on. Seems really interesting.

  • How about include Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance with a HD version of KHII?

    • Total_Overdose

Chances are, it’s going to be BBS:FM and Re: Coded cutscenes. DDD is too new and is technically already HD.

      • God! Why are you and I the only ones who see that 3D is too new for a collection?

    • Herok♞

The game was released about 2 months ago I dont think Square is trying to set the world record for fastest remake.

      • Solomon_Kano

At the same time, it’s not unthinkable. It’s highly improbable, but 3D performed well below what the series had done prior (in Japan, at least) and I could see SE wanting to do something about that. A Final Mix is out of the question since those have been on the decline and doing a decreasingly popular update for a game that already underperformed is unlikely to make up for that. It’s improbable that a 2.5 HD would include 3D, but it’s not exactly impossible.

It’d just be a hell of a lot more work than SE would be willing to do. If they weren’t willing to port 358/2, it wouldn’t really make sense for them to port 3D either.

        • Herok♞

3D didn’t do nearly as bad as you are implying and there were many factors which would have changed the sale results, like naming it KH3, releasing it on another platfom, etc.

          • Solomon_Kano

Hold your horses. I’m not implying anything. Nobody’s saying the game did bad, I’m saying that it underperformed given that it sold less than half of BBS’s opening week in the same period, that’s all. That’s not disputable. I’m not saying the game did poorly, I’m saying it didn’t do as well as the title that preceded it. Numbers show that and that’s all I’m referring to, no implication of anything.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

I can see spot the improvements but for some it would be better to use a comparison

  • Learii

i never play brith by sleep so i hope they remaster that to ps3

  • Demeanor

Screens are good, I hope Sora’s advanced model blends well with the KH environment.
Those kana and kanji are horrible though, they look like a child’s writing to me >_< …

  • Budgiecat

Didn’t have the time? Since when is S-E in a rush?

    • Since Nomura has this, 2.5, Versus XIII, KHIII, the international version of Type-0, the rumored HD 3rd Birthday, BBS Vol 2, and Lightning Returns to work on…

      • Solomon_Kano

        The international version of Type-0?

What would Nomura need to contribute to that? His roles were as an artist and producer, the only thing to be done with the game is localize it. I doubt he’s needed for that (supposing he were, there’s no indication the game is coming anyway).

As for BBS vol. 2 and “the rumored HD 3rd Birthday” it doesn’t really work for us to start counting his time based on projects that likely don’t even exist. Supposing they do, Nomura’s sole role on The 3rd Birthday was as an artist. Same goes for Lightning Returns. Like XIII-2 and XIII before it, Nomura’s only an artist on the game.

It’s usually for the best to base expectations on concrete things rather than rumor and speculation, so I don’t think Nomura’s quite that busy just yet. Versus and preliminary work on KH3 should keep him plenty occupied as far as real projects go though.

        • Type 0 was apparently reported to be going to Vita, which is why it’s taking so long.
BBS V2 already has a teaser out and they have yet to cancel a KH game. It definitely exists. The HD 3rd Bday might not. And they’ll be working on 2.5 before III. But this isn’t really a discussion worth having.

          • Solomon_Kano

Which means Type-0 on Vita is still a rumor until SE announces it. As for BBS V2, really? I don’t follow KH that closely, so I’d love to see the teaser.

          • Kingdom Hearts III is a rumor too, then. Just because it’s not official doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

          • Solomon_Kano

@eris216:disqus Then does acknowledge work better? Nobody from SE has mentioned a Type-0 for Vita while they’ve gone on the record speaking about KH3. That’s certainly not the same. Should it be announced, or at the least spoken of, then great. That’d be awesome. Until that time comes, I see no reason to expect Nomura to be busy with such a project though.

          • 1Up or Kotaku or one of those sites had an interview with SE where they talked about Type-0 and it was said to be moving to Vita for the international release. But the story was buried by other bigger news in the cycle and the fact that no one cares about the PSP and even less about the Vita.

  • I’ve just never been all that sensitive to “HD” changes. In my head its just the normal standard, but not any prettier than how it looked on my little TV set with the r/w/y plugs. Instead the PS2 just looks worse, as if it de-evolved.

    • Anime10121

This game isn’t just an “HD” remake, they’ve replaced the character models with the higher quality ones from Kingdom Hearts 3D.  So this technically does have a graphical upgrade, if you look at Sora from the original, and the Sora in these screens, you’ll definitely see how much its improved!

      • Xerain

I don’t think he means literally, I think he means in your head. When the resolution is lower, you mentally add in detail that is not there. Sora in this version looks like what I REMEMBER Sora looking like in KH1. I remember KH1 looking pretty good when I played it. But I’m pretty sure if I load it up on my 42″ 1080 display it’s gonna look like garbage.

However getting the HD remake will look like what I expect KH to look like.

  • enorka miho

This can only mean that KH3 is near and they have no time to remake 358/2 Days because they wanted players to experience those games first before plunging into the confusing world of KH…

Then, after KH3 they will release “KH Final mix Ultimate complete remake”… Yea, we all know that will happen..

Btw, Tetsuya Nomura is the last prominent person in SE who still remembers how to make a game like they use to..

    • Solomon_Kano

Hiroyuki Ito and Hajime Tabata aren’t exactly the bottom of the barrel, so I’d say there’s more than just Nomura.

      • enorka miho

lol… thats why i say prominent… he is the only one left that is famous while sakaguchi has already left the place a very long time ago…

        • Solomon_Kano

Fair enough, though Tabata’s certainly on his way to prominence. Has 3 of SE’s biggest PSP games under his belt, so if they give him a go at consoles it’d pretty much be a wrap.

          • enorka miho

i really hope so though… We need more people to make good games… Pray that he will be popular enough so that SE will give him more chances to show his talents..

    • LightZero

Nomura is alright. I don’t play KH for the storyline since that’s a mess. However, KH is a good gameplay experience with interesting characters. Ito and Tabata are better. Ito did well in his work for FFVI, IX (especially this game), and smaller role in FFXII. Tabata did very well with Type 0.

Plus there is the guys who’s working on Bravely Default. They have potential. Over all I do think there are some good talents in SE. I’m sure some of the newer guys are very hungry and wish Nomura and Toriyama would stop hogging the spotlight. Honestly I hope for the same thing. Neither are people I would praise.

  • Settsuo

I can do without this. My childhood consisted of nothing but Kingdom Hearts and crushing on Utada Hikaru. Call me back for KH2:FMHD and I’ll be good.

  • Keitaro004

I hope they’ll release this in the west too and include ALL scenes. Not delete/edit a lot of scenes like they did with the PS2 version. Just release the game with a teen rating and we’re all fine!

    • Bhunivelze

It’s an easy mistake to make, but its actually the final mix versions that got edited. :P The edits for the US releases were very minor, they even added stuff. The final mix version added a bunch of stuff. That’s the version in 1.5.

  • Chris CCCD

Oh my gosh. KH 1 Had to be my favorite game ever T_T I can’t believe they’re remaking it, oh my god I’m so excited.

  • Xion: (Seriously Roxas? I mean SERIOUSLY!? ¬¬)

    • OatMatadoQuatro

Roxas: (Well, you’ve gotta admit he is attractive… and you really scared me the other day when you transformed into Sora!!)

  • Barrylocke89

I don’t remember the Guard Armor being that…colorful. I wonder what other enemies and characters will get redesigns (as opposed to just just prettier looking models).

Also, I wonder if the AI will get more tweaking for the Disney crew so they play a little better than cheerleaders for Sora.

    • sonicgamer07

Final Mixes always edit the color scheme of enemies. This version of Guard Armor was in the original KHFM too.

      • Barrylocke89

Didn’t know that. Thanks for the clarification bro.

  • Joe

This looks really nice and all… But until they say this is being released in America then I am not getting my hopes up too high. No. Knowing Square Enix and Japan… They will probably make this thing a Japan exclusive and region lock it so nobody else can play it. I just get this really strange feeling like I have seen this all before… MAYBE IT WAS THE LAST TIME FINAL MIX WAS RELEASED? Final Mix is a Japan exclusive game and will never see the light of day in America.

    • Zeik56

This isn’t really the same thing as not getting Final Mix. Those games were simply updated versions of games that were released mere months before. It would have sold notably less than the first release, so they clearly decided a second localization wasn’t worthwhile. (Whether or not that was justified.)

This is different though. This is an HD remaster 10 years later. It has the same appeal for it’s potential market as any other HD remaster that is released these days. And on the plus side, there’s no new voiced dialogue in FM, so that wouldn’t get in the way of releasing it now.

I won’t argue that we’re definitely going to get it, but there’s much higher probability than any of the Final Mix releases.
