Finally, A Look At Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn For PS3

By Spencer . October 10, 2012 . 9:34pm

Square Enix sent over some new Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn screenshots showing the PlayStation 3 version. Final Fantasy XIV has a different interface on PS3 with 16 total command slots. The d-pad and face buttons (circle, cross, triangle, and square) are for eight slots. The other eight can be accessed when you hold down the L2 or R2 buttons. Players can set eight action bars and cycle through these using L2 and R2. The main menu, as explained last night, has a XMB-like interface.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will have more cameos from previous Final Fantasy games like Amon, an optional boss from Final Fantasy III. Summon monsters Leviathan and Odin are also confirmed to be in Final Fantasy XIV.

Chocobos in Final Fantasy XIV can learn skills. You can make a chocobo that specializes in healing and wears a white mage hood (left) or an attack-obo.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will also have advanced dungeons like this one desgined for players level 40 or higher.

  • Those are some impressive looking screens. Pretty Hi-Res for a console MMO.
    Hope it doesn’t disappoint.

  • Anon-non

That white mage chocobo, so effing awesome.

  • Romangelo

    so it’s 720p only?

I rather play it on PC.

    • CirnoLakes

Of course it is, Final Fantasy XIV is a pretty demanding game as it is.

And most games for the PlayStation 3 are 720p anyway. You don’t get too much 1080p out of current gen consoles.

    • xavier axol

i believe even uncharted 3 was 720p and it looked great.

  • Randy Marsh

That’s Hein, not Amon! Anyways, awesome, glad to see other old school villains from previous FFs returning, I have gotten bored of Ultros, Typhon, Omega, Shinryu, and Giligamesh only making cameos.

  • CirnoLakes

I… really want that system on on PC.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

It is launched on PC first there.^_^

      • CirnoLakes

No, I mean I want the option for that menu system.

I’m definitely aware the game is for the PC. I played the Beta for this game years ago and was there playing the first few weeks of launch.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Lol, you never mention it there.^_^ But, i think they are still going to upgrade that one for the P.C too after all, this is “A realm reborn” lol.^_^

        • neo_firenze

I agree that I’d like to see the “console” system as an option for the PC version.  I’ve played FFXI on PC with a 360 pad for years, and would really like this kind of controller-friendly interface as an option for the relaunched XIV.

The more I see about A Realm Reborn, the more it makes me want to play it after being completely disappointed with original XIV…  Yoshi-P is definitely using his team to do everything he can to salvage the game.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

The two different Chocobo looks damn nice.^_^

  • Solomon_Kano

Saw Amon and thought Korra instead of FF. Definitely not the right one lol.

This is looking great. I’ll be all over this once it hits.

  • Romangelo

textures look a lot worse than PC version… I hope they’ll put a demo on PSN Store.

  • AoNoise

I haven’t seen Leviathan since FFIX! :) And those Chocobos! I’m genuinely excited for this.

  • game looks ok, and graphics + textures look decent, don’t really care about the graphics though, since graphics don’t make the game, gameplay and storyline does

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Looking for storyline in MMO is not a good thing though.^_^

      •  FFXI (online) had a better storyline than most single player rpgs.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I am not really sure there lol. As i feel that most Jrpg had better story compared to 11 where the story is not bad but kinda lacking there.

Maybe the atmosphere is the main problem in MMO here.

          • Scrooge_McDuck

Atmosphere is the main strength of an MMO, I think, due to scale and exploration.

They, of course, have a lack of playable protagonist with strong character.

          • Ricewarrior

Personally, I have a hard time trying to get sucked into any MMO’s Atmosphere  since a lot of MMOs have cluttered UIs along with names, guild emblems, and titles floating around in the distance.

Although, Final Fantasy XI was probably the only MMO where I sat down and actually started to appreciate the locales mostly due to its minimalistic UI.

          • If you played FFXI you know about its atmosphere. XI has it in spades…

Yes, I was exaggerating a little bit about the story. But if you ever played through the Chains of Promethia story line, you may just fall in love with it.

Atmosphere however… both FFXI and FFXIV are not like any other MMO out there. They are vastly different, everything about those games is made to be atmospheric. Special attention is payed to presentation… even the music changes accordingly when entering a new area and peppered with subtle ambient sounds.

      • Christopher Nunes

LaTale, another MMORPG I play which is Free-to-Play, has a storyline to follow… you finding a girl named “Iris Livier” and find out what really happened to her, her fight with the Demon King, and her friends. Right now, Iris has be located but you can’t get to it… which sucks (I’m LV193 for my main character, a Blader which is a dual-sword wielder with high Attack Power and Speed but lacking in defense) and you kinda found out Iris is the one to summon you, the player, into the world of LaTale.

Well not as engaging as the Star Wars: The Old Republic with the storylines, but I like it, and there’s even scenarios for you the player to play out that doesn’t involve Iris.

FF14 looks good and I have the original PC release in my room, but I can’t play it as I don’t have a computer powerful enough to play it (I originally thought I was able to buy and build my own computer to play the game), so I’m waiting for the PS3 so I can play it. I looks much more better to play than FF13 honestly, I can’t seem to bring myself to finish it even though I’m on Chapter 10.

      • well FFXI had decent storyline, especially the wings of the goddess and chains of promethea storyline, and FFXIV realm dead had some decent storyline in it too

  • Cephrien

Gaaah. This is gonna be sweet.
I haven’t had a console MMO since Phantasy Star Universe. TwT

  • Not bad really. It looks just like how Skyrim looks on PS3. Put that on a side, I hope there is no FPS issues.

MMO in a console? I may have played DCUO but a FF MMORPG ps3 game? Now that is interesting!

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

This game is not FPS though so i don’t think there are going to have any problem there.^_^

      • You might be joking… but by FPS he means – Frames Per Second. Which… there will be frame rate issues. It is absolutely unavoidable.

  • Seeing these screens for PS3 finally come out is big news for this game. This version of the game will ultimately be Square’s second shot at this. The market for MMOs on the PS3 is there. Just have to see how well the monthly fee model does on it. If they allow people to buy their subs off PSN and make some 3,6,12 month bundle instead of this whole “crysta” and square enix online (or PlayOnline) account business, it would help.

I have a character in FFXIV, but I haven’t played in a few months, waiting for 2.0 and all. I’m actually sort of impressed with the screens from PS3, seeing as it is a very high end and graphically demanding game… At least it doesn’t look as bad as the lowest setting possible on PC. We will have to see it in action first. I have no doubt that this WILL suffer from framerate issues, especially in towns. Still happy it’s coming though, even in its current form, this game is better than FFXIII or FFX and every sequel they have put out for said titles.

I know some people see a FF MMO and scoff because it is not “traditional”, but guess what. All of the good writing, story, setting and music that is notoriously missing from the series… that’s where it all went (and to Type-0). Just take a stroll through the Black Shroud while it’s raining…as this is playing
First time I got to to this area I must have spent an hour sitting on a tree stump just enjoying the atmosphere.

    • fayt255

IS their really a decent story, I have yet to find a mmo with a good story most mmos i have played are so boring with the story I don’t even listen to what the npc that gives the quests say since they say the same things in all of them.

      • neo_firenze

Have you played FFXI?  Actually several good storylines in that one.  In particular, the Treasures of Aht Urghan missions, and the Wings of the Goddess missions/3 nation quests (a lot of things about the WotG expansion missed the mark, but storyline quality was not one of them).

I’ll stand by my assertion that if they wanted to take FFXI mission/quest content and retool it to be single player story-focused content, they could make at least a few full sized single player RPGs with better than average storylines.

        •  agreed… Final Fanatsy XI is probably the most story driven MMO i’ve ever played… it’s actually too heavy on Story imo…

      • Z3

        Try Guild Wars 2

      •  I played FFXI for about 6 years. It was my first real MMO. The reason I decided towards this and not WoW is because I was thoroughly invested in the story, setting and music. To this day XI has the best battle animations and effects with the use of weapon skills, skill chains and summons. Ancient magic for BLM looks cool as hell too. Blue Mage in FFXI is probably the sexiest thing in the world by the way.

        • fayt255

Thanks for the info all of you I just simply judged the FFXI and FFXIV as just typical MMOs. I think I will check these games out, but I have been interested in FFXIV since its now getting  onto PS3. I really never got into WoW at all.

  • Those Chocobo outfits are just too cute. My curiosity in the game is growing… pretty illustrations tend to do that to me.

  • Draparde

This makes me excited! its not bad enough for me to really care about which i play on.

which means i’ll probably play whatever’s hooked up to my TV at the time! (lol) i’m also intrested in that dungeon. since i’m a lv 40+ player and all :x…

  • miyamoto

The most realistic looking FF yet

  • a b

i want this for my ps3 so badly

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      It is coming. Patient!!!^_^

  • komiko12

Battle Chocobos!! What a nice addition to the game!

So will there be Black Mage Chocobos?? LOL

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

      Can’t wait for Dancer Chocobo i see.^_^

      • komiko12

Nah! Bard Chocobos would be badass.

        Kweh Kweh Kweh ~ !!

        •  nah, dragoon chocobos would be badass! (imagine when it jumps =P)

  • eilegz

hope its free to play but its almost impossible for that to happen. :(

  • do those “job” chocobo actaully do something except look different? pretty cool if the chocob has some job specific ability and  changes as you change job.

  • The game looks really nice on the PS3. Cannot wait to pick up a copy of it next year.

  • Crevox

    That’s not Amon, that’s Hein.

  • Loving the look and feel of A Realm Reborn. The XMB bar is cool, and the chocobo classes are a very nice addition. I can’t wait until we are able to play this. Hope it comes out soon. =^_^=

  • Kalis Konig

Is this really only going to be $39.99? That’s attractive if so. I’m already loving that they have basically remade the game from the ground up after the original FF14 was a complete screw-up.

    • neo_firenze

Well, it’s $39.99 plus a $12.95 monthly fee to play.  I imagine the game will come with a free month too.

They make their money on subscriptions, not on initial software sale, so it’s not surprising they would sell you the disc for a lower price.  Honestly, if they really wanted to try to hook players it wouldn’t be too surprising if they released the client software for even cheaper, as low as free…

      •  Making the client free would be a good move.

  • harmonyworld

    gamefly rental!

    •  you can’t rent this as One key per disc per account .

  • Eilanzer

I have the game … But after so many problems and frustrations I’m not sure yet if i have desire to play/try again =/

..and pay monthly for it, even less likely…
