Shining Ark Revealed With Wild ARMs Maker Media.Vision As The Developer

By Spencer . October 16, 2012 . 3:58pm

shiningarkSiliconera first caught wind of Shining Ark through a trademark, so we’re not too surprise to see a reveal in Famtisu.

Chaos Rings and Wild ARMs developer Media.Vision is making Shining Ark for PSP. Shining series character designer Tony Taka reprises his role for Shining Ark. The story begins on a far off island in the village of Arcadia when a girl with one black wing washes ashore…

Freed arrived at the island at a young age and moved into Shannon’s house. He’s leader of a vigilante group when the game begins. Shannon is an elf and a baker. Zynga is a fisherman who understands Freed and Panis is a girl with one black wing.

Shining Ark is scheduled to come out this winter on PSP.

  • Another game for PSP.  Another lost hope for localizing it.

    • region free.

      •  I am not knowing in the language of the Japanese.  Nor am I inclined to learn the language currently.

        • So? Doesn’t mean you can’t play it.

          • Budgiecat

True. But this isn’t going to help SEGA get out of their financial hole

“How does importing a game legally not help Sega?”

Because Sega cannot track those sales

          • How does importing a game legally not help Sega?

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

You think localizing game on PSP that had a very high piracy rate and low sell rate is going to save them?

          • Suicunesol

Basic reading ability is required for the enjoyment of many games. I don’t know if Shining Ark is one of them, but I do know that not knowing what is being said puts a cap on enjoyment for anything. :O It’s hard to justify buying a game you can’t understand.

          • That’s one opinion. But I’ve played through more than a dozen games entirely in Japanese. Like Soma Bringer. Didn’t stop me one bit.

          • Suicunesol

Well, that’s one game. There are also plenty of games with gameplay that transcends language barriers. Just curious, what are some of those dozen games that you played entirely in Japanese?

Point still stands though–if you understand it, you’ll enjoy it more (or less, if the story sucks :P).

          • Kingdom Hearts 2 (just couldn’t wait), Soma Bringer, Malicious (never thought it was getting localized), Battle Stadium DON, Pokemon Gold, .hack//LINK (and Namco can go to hell for not localizing that), Frontier Gate (same thing for Konami on this), El Dorado Gate, FF Type 0, and a few others.

          • Rogerrmark

Agree.Especially if you mind the story,or mind the character development.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Meanwhile, in the ranks of PSV games coming out to tide people over… *tumbleweed*

  • They really churn them out.  Shame SEGA gave up on the series besides the PSP situation everytime I hear people talk about Shining they don’t wanna play the non-strategy entries.  That and SEGA West probably don’t wanna be involved with Tony Taka…

    • No, I’m pretty sure it’s because modern “Shining” titles sell like crap.

      • Ladius

Not really, aside from Feather (a bit less than 70k) most of them are near the 150k target, which is good for a mid-tier franchise in terms of budget and marketing.

Also, the old Shining games sometimes saw worse sales than the new ones, here are some Saturn numbers, for instance:

        Shining the Holy Ark 83k
        SF3 Scenario 1 67k
        SF3 Scenario 2 37k

Also, the Shining Force GBA remake is the worst selling among modern SF games despite being the only one geared towards the old fanbase of the series, with 34k copies sold.

        • Ergo

Yes, but when you look at the userbases (PSP vs. Saturn), those numbers are put in a vastly different light and the PSP generation SF titles don’t look very good in comparison:

          SS (worldwide): ~10 million
          PSP (worldwide): 50 million…as of 2009

          • Ladius

As Vita sales of Persona 4 Golden, Project Diva f and Ys Celceta show, a small hardware userbase isn’t necessarily an issue when a series has an ardent fanbase.

Also, Saturn had quite a bit of jrpgs with strong sales, like Grandia at 350k, Lunar SSS at 200k and Langrisser 3 at 180k, so those numbers for the Shining games are low even in the context of that platform.

Again, as I mentioned the Shining Force remake on GBA sold even worse than the Saturn games, despite that platform having an huge userbase.

Also, his point was that modern Shining  games sell “like crap”, which seemed to imply older Shining games were big sellers: that is simply false on both regards, and kinda explains why Sega changed the series’ focus over the years.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Research pliz. Most Modern Shining series sells more compared to the classic Shining series there.

  • Media.Vision are amazing, I’m pretty sure this game is gunna be awesomesauce.

    • Peeka Chu

They are in my top 5 all time favourite devs.  I can’t think of a bad game that they’ve made.

  • Will Import this.  Just for the fact that it has shining, and ark in the same title.

  • Kirbysuperstar2

Not to be confused with Shining and the Holy Ark, of course.

  • Raze

    PSP is always reborn huh…
    I miss Wild Arms…
    Where’s WA 6 sony??

    • Nostalgia is making you forget how terrible 4 and 5 were.

      • Raze

        Well…I kinda hate 4…
        But I like 5…
I really miss their puzzle dungeon and dat whistle+guitar music…
And freely running in the world map pressing square button…

      • Rogerrmark

So,hatred for WA5 is not nostalgia for WA and WA2?Ok.

        • T_T

The series has been on a decline since the third entry. WA3 > WA4 and WA5. It stands to reason that WA6 will be < WA5. Now, take your passive agression elsewhere please and thank you.

    • Budgiecat

PSP is reborn while Vita remains a dead fetus lol

      • sherimae1324

tsk tsk tsk this what happens if you dont visit the VITA section of siliconera nowadays…. totally clueless of what games will come and maybe released for the system….. besides what would i expect from a “street cat” like you

        • The Vita sales numbers back his point, not yours.

        • Budgiecat

I’m domesticated. Don’t you see the budgie in the back chasing me? I’m scared…

  • My soul needs wildarms…

    • epy

I know what you mean, brother.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Here I thought your soul needed new clothes for Ciel no Surge.

      •  But i already have it,and it gets updated monthly lol, so my soul doesnt needs it as much as WA that has been years

    • MrTyrant

At least we can hope that this game will be similar to Wild Arms and that will be awesome.

  • Peeka Chu

This and the ensuing media barrage will be as painful to endure as that of Shining Blade – which SEGA was again too busy with Sonic shovelware to localize.

  • gets in bed with anyone these days.

  • brian yep

Media.Vision is one of my top 5 facorite developers, and this is a PSP game.

  • FFmax

God damn is every Jrpg going to be on the psp? Well, time to start importing.

    • sherimae1324

“YS Celceta, oboromuramasa, atelier totori plus, dragon’s crown, the ps1 rpg sequel (forgot the title =P)…

i dont think these JRPG games will also come to the psp oni-chan ^_^

  • MrTyrant

Now I am thinking about a game with similar things to Wild Arms, having dungeon exploration with puzzles and plataformer system with good turn based combats, good story and the decision/relantionship system from previous Shining games. All my wallet.

Yep, sound like another game from psp to outsell Vita D:

  • Chiupon

i think people are overlooking the fact that this is a game in the shining series

expect generic harem crap, an absurb plot, stupid gameplay and generic designs

it’s going to sell nothing just like the rest of the series and produce porn doujin that will sell more than the vita tho’

and no it will never be localized

    • Chiupon

and it won’t be anything like Wild Arms, I’m certain. I find it kind of insulting to the series to even have the two names linked.

      • zazza345

Blade wasn’t anything close to what you’re describing, in fact it was good, its only issue was the lack of difficulty.

    • Ladius

Shining Hearts and Shining Blade were far from the awfulness you’re trying to paint, did you play or even research them?

Also, it isn’t like Wild Arms was a flawless series – as much as everyone loves the first and third entries WA2 was painful at times, and 4 and 5 were good but far from masterpieces. Even the most ardent fans of the series will recognize that its quality wasn’t uniform.

I don’t understand your point about sales, either, since the last WA games have sold less than their Shining counterparts. It’s not a gigantic difference (WA5 sold less than 120k while Shining Hearts and Blade have sold more than 150k), but it’s also far from the “lol, Shining sales are crap” thing you were trying to push since those are respectable numbers for lowmid-tier jrpgs series.

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

You should actually go and play Shining Hearts and Blade before you comment there as both of those had a nice gameplay and interesting plot.

“porn doujin” Nuff said, Pliz what the hell are you even smoking now?

And also about generic design, i hope you won’t said Growlancer series designs or even Bravely Default design is unique there as all the characters is also generic.

      • Trotmeister

Did you actually play Shining Hearts and/or Blade? They are exactly all those things – generic, silly, with focus on harem stuff. Well, okay, I haven’t played Hearts all that much, but I was very interested in Blade due to its similarities with Valkyria Chronicles.

God, it was such a dissapointment. Why even bother designing all those features if the battles are ridiculously simple in the first place? Oh, and don’t even get me started on the story. It’s just blergh.

Comparing this crap to Growlanser is an insult.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

“with focus on harem stuff” Once again, research first at least before you blabber something. Not even one of the multiple ending there gives you harem stuff. Shining series has always followed the single character endings there and for you to blabber all this wrong information is not making you look better.

The battle system is great as they actually incorperated many of Sakura Taisen elements and VC elements into the game there. From Song Magic that can damage opponents into blokading the enemies path. The only problem with the game indeed is most of the battle is too easy and lack of variety.

About Blade title, i would even said it is better compared to the other Shining series considering this one is one of the better fleshed out both in story  and also characters.

I compare this series with Growlancer is purely on artist sections considering both the series had the same artist(Tony Taka and Satoshi Urushihara) for quite a time and the characters actually look very generic for each instalment.

      • Chiupon

Tony Taka — he’s  porn artist. His characters are worthless moe waifu who’s only roles are in that of porn doujin. I’m pretty certain they all follow the same formula too.
amensiac male hero something radda radda mutter mutter swords mutter mutter 5+ moe waifus radda radda save the world

        • Chiupon

original and definitely nothing hasn’t been done to death

          • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

There is almost nothing original nowadays especially in Jrpg genre and Shining series is never about story anyway. Most people played the game purely for gameplay.

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

“Tony Taka — he’s porn artist.” And what does that relate too?

So you are saying that Satoshi Urushihara can also only produce worthless characters as he is also a hentai artist.

“amensiac male hero something radda radda mutter mutter swords mutter mutter 5+ moe waifus radda radda save the world”

And i am more or less sure now that  you don’t even actually plays any of the game there and just hate the game there considering Shining Blade is not even close to any of those.

    • sherimae1324

*stares at my scissors in hand* pleaase chiupon nee-sama, pleaasse leave…

      • Chiupon

as someone with a genocider syo avatar, I would think that you’d be more in preference for a game with a female protagonist with an endless harem of badly designed male trope characters who all love her for no particular reason.

        • Chiupon

which is basically shining but gender swapped.

    •  It sold well enough to get an Anime… welll that’s probably largely due to Tony Taka. And even though Tony Taka draw “moe waifus” he can draw it a lot better than a lot of artist, and let’s not even compare YOU to Tony. And how do you even assert the stuff he drew are “worthless”…?

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I hope that this news there shows that Sega is actually starting to pay more attention to their old franchise there as many of their old franchises is great game.

    Go go Sega.^_^

  • I want shining blade… in english =_=

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

You can use this websites to look for the all the story and event there.

That way, you will be able to understand all the event while enjoying the game.^_^

      •  Thanks man

        • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Np.^_^ Keep supporting Sega there so we will get more Shining game in the future.^_^

  • Crimson_Cloud

Another game that won’t be translated.
And speaking of Media Vision, where the hell is a new Wild Arms game?

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I would also love a new Wild Arms game there but i don’t think the last instalment for that series did well so maybe they kinda cut down the franchise there.T_T

  • MrTyrant

Tony Taka is a doujinshi artist I don’t know why people make a fuse about that because most artist begin drawing porn lol even some artist you might like drew porn using just another nickname. I like his design, they are always pretty good some of them generic but still beatiful.

Besides Tony Taka or any artist is not at fault of what the company do with the franchine. If a company use Satoshi or Soejima or Kaneko to do a crappy game with boring plot is not their fault, it’s the company that hire him that didn’t make a good job on producing a good game.
