Disgaea Dimension 2 Picks Up After Disgaea 1, Limited Edition Announced

By Spencer . October 21, 2012 . 4:15pm

imageNippon Ichi Software revealed Project D is a Disgaea Dimension 2, a direct sequel to Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. The story picks up directly after the ending of the first Disgaea game with Laharl as the protagonist. Etna and Flonne will be in Disgaea Dimension 2 too. Like the other games in the series, Disgaea Dimension 2 is a strategy RPG.

Minori Chihara who voiced Yuki Nagata in the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya will sing the "Cradle Over" the game’s opening song.

Disgaea Dimension 2 will be available for PlayStation 3 on March 20 as a regular game for 7,140 yen ($90) and a 10,800 yen ($136) limited edition. The limited edition includes a hard cover art book, a 2CD soundtrack, and Niitengo figures of Etna and Flonne. Pre-order Disgaea Dimension 2 and you’ll get a code to download "legacy costumes" for Laharl, Flonne, and Etna.

  • The story picks up directly after the ending of the first Disgaea game with Laharl as the protagonist.

..So that means this game is pre-Disgaea 2?

    • Yuriangels

ha, but it would cool if we get Disgaea 2 cost as will. as but younger.

      • DurableTomb

Hanako would be a toddler, Taro would be an infant, and Adell would be missing about 1/4 of what makes him interesting (ie his relationship with Rosalind).

        • M’iau M’iaut

Only 1/4? We are talking a simple human who walks up to Rozy after she destroys Ultimate Laharl, hugs her and says everything will be alright. That was quite a powerful moment for me.

          • DurableTomb

OK, 1/3 then. I like Adell as a Disgaea lead, Rosalind or no. Rosalind without Adell is a considerably worse trade off than Adell without Rosalind (IMO). I hold a similar set of opinions for Valvatorez and his relationship with Artina (other than being a plot-piece, she just seems… underwhelming, personality wise to me).

          • M’iau M’iaut

The lack of character in the characters of both D3 and D4 really separate them — in a bad way — from the first two games.

          • Brimfyre

Well at least D4 was a step in the right direction.  I at least liked all the main cast of D4 instead of hating all of them as in d3.

          • Mr_SP

Uh… Kind of a spoiler, but… He’s not human. The game pretty much shoves it in your face. Adell is the only human not affected by the spell because he’s simply not human.

      • DurableTomb

You have to take pre-launch, middle of development statements about games with a fistful of salt. “Directly” is one of those words that tends to have a little too much leeway from my experience.

  • evilmoogle

So.. is this before or after Disgaea infinite?

    • DurableTomb

Judging by Etna donating her skirt fabric to Laharl for his pants, I’m guessing after.

  • I have this stupid grin on my face that won’t go away.

    • DurableTomb

Your mother did warn you that it would stay that way if you kept it up.

  • Herok♞

I wonder how they are going to handle new characters since the gang has shown up in games that take place after this one.

    • komiko12

I think that it will happen after Disgaea 2 and 3. The series of events that happened in this new game will result in Flonne being an Archangel in Disgaea 4. But that’s just a theory.

      • Herok♞

well I would agree but it say direct sequel so D2 couldn’t have taken place yet

        • Nemesis_Dawn

Direct sequel doesn’t necessarily mean it has to take place directly after Disgaea 1, just that it happens after Disgaea 1. Could be a thousand years since then.

          • Herok♞

The article say this exactly: The story picks up directly after the ending of the first Disgaea. So that means no time passed.

          • Nemesis_Dawn

And look at that: “Disgaea Dimension 2 takes place several years after the events in Disgaea: Hour of Darkness.”
Just as I had said, taking place directly after Disgaea 1 does not mean it has to take place the same minute that ended. Just means that the first game’s events took place.

          • Herok♞

             fair enough

        • komiko12

Well.. the story could span thousands of years. The game would tell about events starting from where Disgaea 1 ended, then intersecting with some events in Disgaea 2 and 3 until it reaches some point before Disgaea 4 :D

But again that’s just a speculation on my part.

          • Herok♞

So how would Etna missing be handled?  she is gone for the entirety of D2 and an overpowered Laharl comes to get her back.

          • komiko12

Dunno. It will show Etna and Laharl’s fight then Etna will go missing. Then the game would skip to the part when Laharl would try to bring her back.

Or they could just skip it altogether and just mention it in passing..
As I said, the story could span for many years. It’s not like there is enough info released for us to make elaborate theories.

So… how do you explain Laharl’s longer pants? LOL
Hahaha. Considering he appeared in other games with those shorts of his.

          • Herok♞

I would say his pants will be an important element of the story and will be destroyed at the end.

      • Fidelis

Flonne being an archangel was explained in Rasberyll mode of D3 and Disgaea infinite

        • komiko12

          Haven’t played those parts…
          *off to see spoilers*

    • Ronald Bixler

I just hope that this time, they don’t *Sunglasses* drop the Baal again.

  • riceisnice

It’s interesting to see how drastic the strong yen has become. Maybe I should fly over to Japan and buy Christmas presents for my family.

    • Kevadu

?  Because you like spending more?

      • Ronald Bixler

So that he can mail them back home and enjoy the nicer winter weather there.

  • topdog2007

over lord larhal is back hahahahahahah!

    • Ronald Bixler

       That’s HAhahahaha.

      • topdog2007

         right HAhahahahahah!

  • TheMajinZenki

Shut up and take my HL!

    • Ronald Bixler

I take it you’ve been out raising HL then sir?

  • konsama

    Hell yes, Welcome home Laharl-sama!

IMO Disgaea 1 had the best story out of all.

  • Luis Edgar Flores Gutierrez

“Minori Chihara who voiced Yuki Nagata”

    It’s Yuki Nagato.

    • Ronald Bixler

Tomata, tomato, Nagata, Nagato. Let’s call the whole thing off.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Wow, never thought I’d see the day when we got a direct sequel to D1. This is seriously too awesome. I hope all of the english voice actors return.

Can’t imagine Laharl as anyone else but Barbara Goodson.

  • Neophoton

I’m not sure if I can find myself being hyped for this sequel, given how NIS has shifted over the years in terms of storywriting. Not to say I don’t think it won’t have good gameplay, because it will, but it’s the narrative I’m a bit worried about.

I’ll just wait and see how things turn out, but the CE does seem nice.

  • MrTyrant

Being a direct secuel of Disgaea 1 doesn’t mean that previous main character like Adell, Maoh or Valvatorez won’t appear hahahaha. I even think that the Archangel Flonnes could be recruitable.

    • DurableTomb

Please let the Archangel thing not be the case. I absolutely ABHOR her characterization in D4. Her ugly robot and her high-and-mighty attitude at times (you are an archangel, not God, you CANNOT ban others from Celestia for a verbal slight). Speaking of that, does anyone else think that the “God” that is causing them problems in D4 is not really God, but is instead that asinine little douche Eringa from Phantom Brave’s extra mode who kept calling himself God?

      • Mr_SP

…Flonne is a 15 year old girl (mentally and physically) who used to be a Fallen Angel, given great authority, so, yeah, she can at least try to ban people for a verbal slight if she wants. And Japan is not Christian. The God they use *can* be God, but doesn’t have to be a realistic interpretation of any specific God – but by and large, most Gods are jerks. Specifically, yes, God has the right to say “It’s apocalypse time” when the population of a planet becomes *too evil*.

Also, this is a game where you are a demon, but demons and angels are just as evil. You have no right to say “God is being too mean – it obviously can’t be God”. He is, at a minimum, some sort of Creator Deity. Now, admittedly, Makai Kingdom’s Overlords are *also* Creator Deities on a lesser scale, but if you can reliably say that you have created at least one universe, you may call yourself God. The only reason to say that it can’t be God is purely that God was essentially nonexistent in previous games.

        • DurableTomb

My issue was that they took her most irritating aspects and amplified them. Laharl still acts like Laharl. Etna still acts like Etna. Flonne, on the other hand, acts more like her naive self from the beginning of Disgaea. I just can’t stand her as a character if she continues to act like a high-and-mighty archangel. Also, the reason that I question God’s identity in 4 was because of the Eringas that were sent as representatives. The villain in the extra mode of Phantom Brave was an Eringa who got hold of a powerful artifact which he used to convince others that he was God so that he could manipulate them into beefing up their strongest warrior to be used as a core for a weapon he would make and then sell to someone else. But you know what? F it. The God ending in 4 was not a canon ending anyway since it was the “beef up a character to absurd levels and have them solo the map” kind of ending. They did that in 2 with Tink and 3 with Mao and those were not canon either. Regardless it was a stupid out of nowhere idea that they seemed to come up with so that they could add more chapters so that people wouldn’t complain about the games length AGAIN.

          • Tenno Seremel

“Standard” ending fits that ending somewhat. Valvatorez, basically, creates a badass army. What do you need army for? To fight, obviously. The only difference between endings, IMO, is that everything wasn’t destroyed. For now, anyway.

      • MrTyrant

        >Hating archangel Flonne

ISHYGDDT. Everything you dislike is something I like in the new Flonne, also i give NIS points for not keeping the same actitud and old jokes for those characters. LIke when Adell appear as DLC it already confirmed how he and Rozalin are practicaly lovers.

Now is the oportunity with Laharl and Etna in this new Dimension 2.

      • Tenno Seremel

Since when you were under impression angels ever saw god in the first place?

  • Mnstrzero00

Fingers crossed for more random misotheism. It just made everything so badass from out of nowhere.

    • DurableTomb

My opinion on the matter, and that is all I am going to say.

  • kupomogli

I wonder if the graphics still look like they come from a PSX game.

    • SolidusSnake

I know, Disgaea was such a failure. If only it had had epically awesome, phenomenal graphics and character design like this game: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110815051844/finalfantasy/images/7/77/TidusCGScreen.jpg

      • Zero_Destiny

Don’t forget the awesome acting! Man, it blows Disgaea outta the water!

        • SolidusSnake

Hideo Kojima doesn’t reach such peaks of cinematic excellence even in his wet dreams! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5FTJxfV3pc

          • DurableTomb

          • SolidusSnake

I’d argue that being a condescending a-hole is also a waste of scroll bar length. Eh, children? Anyway, I’m just having fun, not trying to start a flame war against FF fans. The point is that graphics don’t necessarily make a game.

          • DurableTomb

I was only attempting to inject a little levity into the situation good sir/miss. No need to be so defensive. I am not here to make enemies, I am just here to give my opinions (with a touch of humor) about a series that I am greatly fond of (Disgaea, that is).

          • SolidusSnake

Uh, okay. No hard feelings. Like I said, I’m just messing with Kupo anyway, not looking for a fight. Unless you play Blazblue or P4A, of course.

      • Koulamatata

It’s not like he was really ragging on Disgaea for any of that.
        But, yeah…

I love the series. They’re all a lot of fun. This should be good too. But I’m with the other guy here. I’m not complaining about the graphics. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious as to what it’ll look like.

        • M’iau M’iaut

It’s one of those things that comes from a very long time of listening to the same things coming from Kupo again and again. Kupo’s dance never changes.

        • SolidusSnake

Uh yeah, he pretty much was. He’s a regular to the site so I’m sure he’s aware of the graphical upgrade the series got in the fourth game.

Since you asked, though, I’m fairly sure it will in the same league as D4 and the God and Fate Revolution Paradox graphically.

      • rebecasunao

        Meg Ryan <3

      • WingsOfEternity

         LMFAO Kupo got shutdown.

    • DurableTomb

Your avatar is a FFVI era moogle and you’re making slights about graphics quality in an RPG? Aaaawkwaaaard.

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

So I assume you completely missed the scans that were posted in the previous article about this? And that’s a pretty stupid thing to say considering Disgaea 4 greatly enhanced the sprite work.

  • DurableTomb

You think they could bring back the scarecrows from the first Disgaea? I liked those monsters. That reminds me, if they don’t include all the monsters from the first Disgaea then how will they explain the absence of Krichevskoy’s vassals from the castle?

  • Nitraion

Lol hope we can have revive spell in battle now… XD
    just suggestion…

    • SLick123456789111

It would only make the experience that more enjoyable.

      • TheRealMalek

Or not. Not being able to revive characters is part of the challenge. You have a limited amount of people you can spawn in battle. If your are able to revive someone, this part is completely void.

        • DurableTomb

As long as each revive puts the character back in the Base Panel and counts as deploying a new unit on the field if they are brought back out of it, it doesn’t seem that broken an ability.

  • Alex Cattaneo

  • A direct sequel huh, so that means Prinny Laharl?

    • It means Fallen Angel Flonne.

    • TheRealMalek

Looks like someone only had bad ending in Disgaea 1.

      • FitzpatrickPhillips

I got that ending and cried my eyes out. Never did go back and get the good ending but I already know what happens. Might as well go back and do it again to prepare for this.

      •  Well I actually already got all the endings. But since it’s been a few years ago I forgot which one is the true ending lol

      • Testsubject909

But that would also connect it to the Prinny games where Prinny Laharl is an optional boss.

  • punnyfuzz

I wounder what the “legacy” costumes are? Perhaps their D1 attire?

  • Kitestwinblades

And just like that- This is on the top of my “Must Have” list XD
The teaser site has a remake of one of the old tunes, but the best part is that it will be revealed on Halloween! X3 I love you NIS

  • Prinnydoom

EDIT: Yuki Nagato. Spelt the name wrong.

  • Dyne

too bad EU will not get the legacy costumes, we only get the game and non of the Pre-order or CE items

  • Göran Isacson

Huh. Have to admit that I’m curious as to how they’re going to write an “interquel” that won’t break canon with the other games… unles the “Dimensions” means that we’re going to hop between different and alternate dimensions… with Laharl trying to defeat all the ALTERNATE Laharls and become supreme overlord of the Multiverse.

… You know, I don’t know if this is what’s gonna happen or not, but now that I came up with the idea I really freaking WANT it to happen.

    • Andres Pena

they actually stated that “The “D” in the the title stands for “Dimension.” But it can also mean “Destiny” or “Dramatic,” according to the producer.” And the destiny part favoring flonne cuz she likes those kinda things and the dramatic favoring Etna cuz she likes being dramatic lol

      • Göran Isacson

Ah, gotcha. Guess we’ll just have to see if different dimensions end up playing a role at all, or if I’m just speculating far too much.

  • Go2hell66

sweet the best disgaea is getting a sequel, we have been blessed by the rpg gods :D

    • Testsubject909

I would argue though that Valvatorez for President

    • I personally prefer 2 and 4 over 1.(4 just barely because it made me laugh more)

but 1 will always hold a special place in my heart as the game that introduced me to this great series.

  • HassanJamal

YES! Sweet frickin yes! Oh yeah…..i mean meh :I

  • Hopefully, we’ll at least get to start at level 100 or so. Though I wonder how Asagi will show up this time since Makai Wars hadn’t been cancelled yet. Time Travel?

    • Tenno Seremel

      She’ll come and we’ll learn that she knew it’ll never happen but were in denial at the time :}

  • Yamaneko22

Figures of Etna and Flonne in Limited Edition? Surely not these, right? Or maybe?

    • tyrantflughude

Sorry but  those are nendoroids so no there not  the figures that are in the limited edition

    • If only.

  • tyrantflughude
  • *to

  • Sequel to the first Disgae? Ok when do I preorder this game NISA! :)

But if it´s a direct sequel starting at the end of the first Laharl can´t keep enjoying himself for being the main character again :( Poor guy. And now I wonder how Asagi will show up in this title.

  • Tianyu Wei

I dont’ know if it’s D4 just looked vastly superior, or it was just better overall than D1… I don’t feel the same kind of fondness of D1 anymore having played D4 so much lol. Valvatorez is a lot better than Laharl imo, although it’s probably because Valvatorez is closer to me in his “age” (they are all couple hundred/thousand years old, but I am talking about the character image).

    • Locklear93

Laharl is the most popular Disgaea protagonist, and D1 is the most popular Disgaea title… but I definitely see where you’re coming from.  Disgaea 2 is my comparable release. Laharl’s not as bad as Mao (MAN I can’t stand Mao!), but I never developed attachment to any character in Disgaea 1.  I did in 2 and 4, and to a lesser extent, 3.  Disgaea 1 I loved mainly for it’s gameplay and silliness.
