Summon Night 5 Screenshots Show Off The New 3D Art Style

By Ishaan . October 24, 2012 . 10:30am

As previously reported, Summon Night 5 on the PSP is making the move from sprites to realistically-proportioned 3D models. Today, showed off screenshots from the game that give us a look at the new art style, adapted from Takeshi Iizuka’s art:

Summon Night 5 does uses portraits as well, though, for event scenes:

Namco Bandai haven’t announced a release date for Summon Night 5 yet.

Okay. All I need to know now is WHO IS GOING TO LOCALIZE THIS?!? *foams at mouth* This MUST be localized!!

  • This game looks gorgeous. The artwork is really appealing and the character designs are beautiful. As for the 3D itself, it looks really good. Far more appealing than the spritework in many SRPGs that I’ve been playing in the past while (unless you count NIS’s stuff, they just blow it out of the water). Very excited to see how this plays and will most likely be importing the earlier PSP releases very soon.

  • Demeanor

Wow, never played this series, is this for PSP? Can anyone give a recap of what the game is like/what other games it resembles system-wise, story-wise etc?

  • I dont like this style at all

    • raymk

I love this style, I tire of the chibi style and the chibi style is really something that can actually hurt western sales for a game like this if brought over.  That said I love the style they used in the past as well but sometimes they have to try something new, may I ask whats wrong with this style?

      • wtf are you talking about? The chibi style is barely if ever used by flightplan

The sprites of the originals were all so much better.

        • raymk

Regardless of what they are refered to as they have always been using them and they are tiny sprites.  There isn’t anything wrong with them but its like disgaea with them just reusing the same spritework, it was time for at least a change up in graphics for once until the change get another kind of 2d artstyle.

          •  look at disgaea 1 then look at disgaea 4 and tell me they used the same sprite work

          • raymk

Digaea 4 is the first time in a long time they changed, but look how many other games they used the spritework in even before D4.  Look i’m not even mad at them for doing that its smart to reuse assets and the sprites weren’t ugly either.  Its more-so to do with me just tired of seeing them and knowing they are reusing them and people just being afraid of change because thats all they are used to seeing. Disgaea 4 sprites are good but they probably wouldn’t be able to pull that off on psp which this Summonnight game is on.

          •  literally only 1 and 2 used the same assets

            thats it

thats less than 99 percent of series with 5 titles or more

so your not looking forward to disgaea dimension or god paradox huh

          • raymk

La pucelle tactics, makai kingdoms and disgaea 3 were bascially all the same spritewise and most people wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.  Like I said  i’m not even mad at them for doing what they did, I still play their games regardless.  No i’m more mad that people just seem to think that anything 2d should just stay 2d.  If they had the budget to make bigger HD sprites i’d be all in, but at this stage i’m just tired of seeing basically the same upscalled sprites even if I do love the games.

Also of course i’m looking forward to the games you mentioned I look forward to all their titles in some shape or form.  You my friend are the person that seems to not be looking forward to this particular game and all because it went from 2d to 3d.

          •  they were not the same sprite wise. take a look again. 3 had hd stuff going on as well.

I am not looking forward because I think the art style is bland and the sprites had soul to me

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Hmmm… personally I’m more fond of SD/chibi-styled units on the battlefield, i.e. Tactics Orge, FFT, Disgaea (unless it’s a military SRPG/strategy game).

But I guess this allows for more epic animations??? Iunno…

Just hope someone brings ANY of the SN titles over, I don’t care which one… =(

  • evilmoogle

May have to import this one.

Psp game + namco bandai + jrpg + localization = nope

    • raymk

      Yep :(.

  • Zoozbuh

UUAUGHH WANT THIS GAME SO BAD. Pleeaase, some company announce a localisation out of nowhere?! It could be possible, with a re-brand a different name! D: Also wow, I like the proportional looking character models (for once), combined with the usual gorgeous art.. The 3D makes a nice change to the uber-deformed sprites in most SRPGs :P

  • Tianyu Wei

weird this isn’t on the VITA… why the PSP now lol….

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Not weird. Just pure business decision as Vita is not doing as well PSP currently.

    • Elvick

Japanese developer, Japanese game, popular Japanese handheld… not surprising. Expected.

Besides, if they release on PSN (not sure how Japan’s digital releases go…) then it’d be on PS Vita anyway.

  • Yuriangels

waiting for my order for summon 3 and 4 come in and plus this. My wallet is going to be starving for a long time! :^)

  • waiting for some yuri news~

  • puchinri

Well, I think I just might get this~. It’s just so pretty. ♥
    Design-wise and graphic-wise.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

This looks much closer to Shining series rather than the classic SN title lol.
Well as long as the game is still fun like the oldies, i am going to bite this one too.^_^

  • hadjimurad

well, i think they nailed that transition.

  • Reiko_Chan

    Im hoping for a localization.

  • eh, not all that interesting now. There are other srpgs I have my eye on
