Final Fantasy Artist Makes Sprite Models For Final Fantasy VII – XIII’s Heroes

By Spencer . November 6, 2012 . 12:58am

Final Fantasy started its life on the Famicom and the original games had sprite heroes. Squaresoft switched to 3D models starting with the PsOne. For Final Fantasy’s 25th birthday, Square Enix asked pixel artist Kasuko Shibuya to make sprites for Cloud, Lightning, and Gilgamesh.

fftribute

Shibuya worked on the Famicom Final Fantasy games as a character and monster artist. Square Enix asked fans in Japan which characters they want to see as sprites for the Final Fantasy Tribute – Thanks – album. This CD has tunes from 25 artists including Aoi Teshima and De De Mouse who are working on the Final Fantasy IX theme song "Melodies of Life." Here’s a list of other artists participating in the Final Fantasy Tribute – Thanks – project.

That’s just beautiful. I really miss 2D sprite jrpgs, makes me want to see a demake of the games.

Fighter, White Mage, Black Mage, Maria, Onion Knight
    Kain, Golbez, Cid, Gilgamesh, Bartz
    Kefka, Terra, Cloud, Sephiroth
    Aeris, Squall, Laguna, Zidane, Eiko
    Tidus, Seymour, Shantotto, Penelo, Lightning

    Did I get everyone right?

    • ragnarok989

That’s Cecil not Golbez. Specifically the sprite from The After Years

      • Anthony Black

Oh, my bad. I thought it was Man in Black Golbez from The After Years.
You’re probably right, though. Now that I look closer, it’s most likely Cecil.

  • Oni123

Love the old 2D sprites =) might have to pick this up just for the cover.

  • Elvick

Were all of these particular sprites created for this? Or are some from something else and the rest of them made to match thematically?

  • komiko12

Good thing that Black Mage and White Mage are still iconic.

  • OatMatadoQuatro

Laguna, Zidane and Tidus look so angry. You are supposed to be the easygoing guys!

    • d19xx

They’re upset because awesome characters like them appeared only in one game(not counting Dissidia.)

  • Yuriangels

wow i wish this was a game. it looks awesome!!! ;)

    Double post, Disqus error.

Not sure why put villains since they are not party members, well excepting Sephiroth and Seymour being temporal.

Eiko over Garnet? Oh well, I like Eiko’s theme anyway :P

I kinda wish to play a 2D RPG of the new games just for the giggles :P

PD: Lightning looks like a plebeyian, her cape is missing lol.

Edit: *Looks closer* … Is Light holding her b—aggage? And are those pixels in her cheeks slight blushing? o_O I better clean my toilete mind…
And also how come she’s not angsty and Tidus, Zidane and Laguna are? Bet they’re like “Damn it we don’t have sequels or prequels!”. Uh Tidus, you had one “One in which Im the protagonist with packs of action and not some silly dancing pop drama!”

Edit 2: Hahaha, Warrior of Light looks like Bartz cosplaying M.Bison xD

Edit 3: Black leather gloves must make you hands sweaty so for that reason Squall and Sephiroth took off their gloves apparently lol.

And now, to wait for the remake of Final Fantasy V, featuring a separate Scenario called the “Epic of Gilgamesh”. Also, I really love Penelo’s sprite form! Heck, I wonder why they made the transition to 3D in the first place?

I like how they ignored Vaan for this one xD

Well, they had to offer something new in contrast to past RPGs right? And it seems it payed off too, I was amazed by the graphics back in the Playstation era. It was so gorgeous, it kept the magic touch even if they trancended to 3D.

Although now… there’s still magic effects here and there but perhaps they are going waaay too realistic now but I guess one of FF’s charms is graphics updates, not something necessary but I think it became one of it’s ingredients for a FF recipe.

And Seymor’s hair still looks like the silliest thing ever, even in comparatively tamer 3D-format.

If we’re not getting remakes, I wonder how I’d feel for a “de-make”….  HMMM

    • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

      Demake: Final Fantasy VII!

Oh, so many rages would come from that one! I’d play it though lol.

Yea, Im not a huge FFVII fan but i would play that!

    • MrRobbyM

      FF VII-IX de-make sounds awesome.

    Aeris but no Tifa?

    HOW DARE YOU!?

  • MagiusNecros

    GILGAMESH SPRITING TIME!

HARK! I am one step closer to realizing FF: EPIC of GILGAMESH!

With his EPIC BEGINNING finally known in Type 0 as his origin and the end of his perilous QUEST is nowhere in sight!  LONG LIVE GILGAMESH!  THE MIGHTIEST IN ALL FINAL FANTASY!

  • konsama

They look so cool, almost makes me wish for a game with those sprites rather than all the current girl-face used now.

Kasuko Shibuya actually did the characters sprites for FFI through FFVI, plus Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, Final Fantasy Dimensions, the Bump of Chicken band members for their Final Fantasy Type-0 single, and most recently, the 16-bit Final Fantasy XIII plot synopsis on the Japanese FFXIII-2 website.
