7th Dragon 2020-II Blooms On PSP In Spring 2013

By Spencer . November 20, 2012 . 2:18pm

imageSega is continuing the 7th Dragon series with another game set in the not-so-distant future. Famitsu announced 7th Dragon 2020-II, which takes place in the year 2021.

The game has a new Idol class and 40 voices to choose from in the character maker. 7th Dragon 2020-II is slated for spring 2013.

Now we’re even more curious what 7th Dragon 2020 3rd Encount is…

  • …Hmm… Weird… I still want the whole series to come over… I dun care who just somebody!

    • I am willing to buy a iOS port if it means I can play in english lol. ^.^;

      • Uhm… I dunno if I would go that far. I have a reputation around here as the biggest hater of iOS.

  • malek86

Between this, Digimon, OP and Shinig Ark, looks like there is some life left on the PSP still. But 2013 should be the last year. By the second half, I guess we’ll be getting nothing more of relevance.

When that happens, I wonder where all these lingering devs will go to. 3DS or PSV?

  • YES!!! Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, YES!! Hahahahaha!!

I better start saving up! If it’s possible, I wanna get this cutie on PSN as soon as it comes up. Now I don’t even care what 3rd Encount would be anymore.

…Oh, who am I kidding? I’m a big sucker for 2020 sub-series at this point.

Now that I think about it, why didn’t they set the time 2 years after the previous game… and name it “7th Dragon 2022“? It’d be the same name, but now with a pun!

But in any case, I better start going through 2020 again and try to understand as much of the script as I can.

    • Kibbitz

Because they like how clean 2020 is =)

  • You guys are going to make me learn Japanese faster aren’t you? lol

    • Oh, not from this game, lemme tell you that. Good luck trying to make out complex Kanji on a PSP screen – unless they changed to a clearer font.

      • ThatAzure

I’ve been playing a bunch of Japanese games on PSP and DS, and I have no trouble at all reading the kanji o.o

        • ErhmagerdWerds

I was going to say the same thing. The PSP for me is really clear, better than pixel fonts where you read the kanji by general shape and context if they cant fit the strokes to be super clear! If you want to learn to read Japanese through a RPG I think the Pokemon games are really the best since they included furigana in B&W!

        • I’m talking specifically about the font in 7D20. It’s quite okay for the most part; it’s just for really complex Kanji with 15+ strokes or so. Then again, I don’t know a lot of Kanji, so that could be part of the reason.

          • Kibbitz

If you knew more kanji, you would know what it would be from context and general shape. Doesn’t change how legible it is though. 7D2020’s font is pretty small by comparison to quite a few games, IMO, so they definitely could run with a larger font and two lines per dialogue box instead of three if they wanted more visibility. However, they ran with something similar-sized for Sol Trigger except that they used black text on white background, IIRC, so I don’t expect any change in font.

      • Since I am a chinese so the chinese/kanji part is no big deal for me. But the tadpoles are….

  • PSP = take all my money.

  • kroufonz

    awesome 7th dragon sequel!
why don’t they just name it 2021 instead of 2020-II

sega really have lots of  jrpg output this gen. unfortunately lots of them would never leave japan (T-T).

  • Raiyu

I guess its not surprising that its on the PSP considering Sega’s financial situation.

Time to suck it up and learn some Japanese.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Hah, PSP? Very nice. Makes it easier for me!

    • It’s pretty predictable ^_^

  • Again PSP and not Vita *sigh*

    • You can play the digital release on Vita though, so at least there’s that.

      • I know that’s not the problem. But at this rate Vita is REALLY going to die if developers don’t develop on it.

  • >PSP
Damn it. I think by now only a miracle can help the localisation T.T Why u no want international $$$ Sega??? Feeling so jelly at ppl who can read Jap.

Welp, @DrakosAmatras:disqus  and guys, where can I find a full writeup of the plot of 2020?? Spoil me on. I really hope some1 kind will do a translation LP for us *prays*

7D2020-II…. looks like FF13-2 style sequel names is starting to be a trend lol. First we have a rundown Tokyo in SMTIV then this…. Looks like 2013 is not a good year for Tokyo in media lol.

    • Kibbitz

I don’t know if anyone ever did put up a full writeup of the plot, though you might still be able to find at least bits and pieces on GFAQs. All I remember of the story is that your ragtag band of heroes are enhanced humans who belong to an organization that ends up fighting to free Japan from the alien (dragon) influence that has fallen on the planet. Each chapter had you liberating a new area and defeating a new boss dragon. In the process, you encountered a rival group that has history with the organization you’re working for (IIRC, they were enhanced humans too but left due to some stuff that happened at the organization, I forget the specifics.) There were some nice characters, heroic sacrifices and betrayals as well as some fun miniquests, including this one involving a Dragon-worshipping cult.

I probably wouldn’t mind helping with a translation LP, even given my limited Japanese, but I don’t have the tools to stream from my PSP. Also doesn’t help that the game is setup such that NG+ only applies to postgame content, meaning that I cannot speed through the core story with an overpowered party (though there is at least casual mode to make the rush easier.) If you’re okay with just a text-based summary of events and dialogue though, I might try doing a casual run to see if I can do it quickly.

Also, I’ve no idea what Amatras means, but it just occurred to me how appropriate it is that @DrakosAmatras:disqus is a fan of a Dragon series, given the Drakos bit. Well, at least assuming it is draconic in some way anyway.

      • Nah, I’ve had that username for some years now. And to be honest, the first 7th Dragon didn’t appeal to me as much, because it still had some mechanics from Etrian Odyssey that I didn’t particularly enjoy. I only got into 2020 because of how streamlined it is.

        • Kibbitz

Same. I tried going back to the first one recently but I couldn’t get into it either. And noted on your nick.

    • Since you brought it up, I’ll be honest with ya. I have virtually all the tools I need to record footage from PSP, and I do want to try my hand at a screenshot+text playthrough. The problem is… I’m not very free lately.

But, as I mentioned earlier on this page, I do plan to go for another round in 7D20 and try to understand as much as I can afford to, so I’ll tell you when I start.

      • Kibbitz

If you can put up the screens somewhere, I can see what I can do to help translate them.

    • From what I know, the rival organisation in question Kibbitz is referring to is called “Sky” led by Takehaya.
This video, aside from being an insanely awesome theme, also contains MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS for 7D2020 and also somewhat extra info for 7D itself in the comments: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LyGlhsBWjk

*Funny: thought I added the link before posting :P

      • There no video attached to it lol. Oh and thk for the warning. I think I will put it on hold first and see will the LP translation pop up. Thk @DrakosAmatras:disqus and guys.

  • GinSilver

I hope they manage to make this game good. Despite my shortcomings in understanding Japanese, 7D2020 turned out to be one of the better RPGs with turned-based combat I’ve played in recent memory, probably because you don’t have to cycle through 5 spells doing the same thing to select the one you want to use.

I do hope they do something about the diffculty. I played 7D2020 on Normal and the game was fairly difficult in the beginning but became almost too easy towards the end. Chalk that up to that you have more options for each encounter, but it’s one of the things that bugged me.

  • pekikuubik

Excellent. A chance to hear more atmospheric electronic music by Yuzo Koshiro. And that’s just from early in the game (to avoid title spoilers). The tracks later in the game are even catchier.

    • My top favorite is Rival Arrival – both Normal and Diva versions.

  • I love zip zany music for this game.
