Konami Hiring Tri-Ace Again To Make Frontier Gate +

By Spencer . December 3, 2012 . 11:47pm

imageLast year, Konami started releasing RPGs again and developed Frontier Gate with Star Ocean developer tri-Ace. Frontier Gate is getting a "G" or "1.5 version" treatment with Frontier Gate + in the works.

Dengeki PlayStation reports Frontier Gate + is a major update that raises the level cap, adds new equipment, quests, areas, and story scenes. You also get the full Frontier Gate game with Frontier Gate +.

Konami will also release a demo for Frontier Gate + in Japan.

Perfect opportunity to localize it, right? :>

I’m not normally one of those “localization, please!” comment posters, but I really do miss tri-Ace. I’ve been itching to play their stuff for awhile. They’re just so… experimental? when it comes to gameplay; it’s really refreshing.

Guess I’ll crack open Star Ocean 3 while I wait.

      >> Konami localizing a game that isn’t Metal Gear, or PES
      >>> Konami localizing a PSP game that isn’t Metal Gear or PES
      >>>> Konami localizing a PSP game that isn’t Metal Gear or PES in 2013

Sorry, that’s not going to happen.

  • ragingmerifes

I didn’t know Tri-Ace still existed. Why aren’t they making a Valkyrie Profile for Vita, now?
Anyway, it can’t get bad if Konami and Tri-Ace are working together.

    • puchinri

Why would they have stopped existing? Even though SO and RoF were only released a couple of years ago, and Frontier Gate was last year and Beyond the Labyrinth was this year. (Also, VP depends on Sega more than them, right?)

I wish they’d get to do another new project, but more FG is nice~.

      • ragingmerifes

Yes, but I meant Valkyrie Profile, not Valkyria Chronicles.

        • Barrylocke89

It would be nice to see another Valkyrie Profile, but Tri-Ace has been pretty busy with games like Resonance of Fate and Beyond the Labryinth.

        • Which depend on Squeenix, who don’t seem to be taking any chances these days. I think Covenant of the Plume bombed pretty badly, too.

        • kroufonz

square enix to obsessed with lightning and FFXIII, and more focused on western games.in console space

        • puchinri

Ahh. But Robert M Fenner is also right about that, still dependent on another company.

      • fayt255

You forgot they also helped with FF13-2 and a Little Battlers game, they also made a social game. tri-Ace has been quite busy it just sucks that were not seeing anything getting localized.

        • puchinri

I did remember FF, but forgot about Little Battlers. I figure I already listed enough, but did consider adding those~.

Yeah, that was my thinking. It’s not like they aren’t busy, we just haven’t got to indulge in any of it yet.

    • JonathanisPrimus

“Why aren’t they making a Valkyrie Profile for Vita, now?”

Because they don’t own that IP, Square Enix does and they don’t care about Vita, or Valkyrie Profile.

  • oh new Frontier Gate..
clicks the link sees the header “PSP”

  • Bloodios

I hope they start getting involved with home consoles again. They kinda left me hanging after showing that tech demo back in 2011… I always dream of a decent HD-remastered if not remake of the Valkyrie Profile series…

  • fayt255

I really hope this will get localized I really need a new tri-Ace game to play! It’s good to see tri-Ace with Konami again though.

  • Peeka Chu

If we’re super lucky one of the new niche publishers will nab this. Thought SEGA are like NAMCO when it comes to coughing up their IPs – they would rather let them rot.

    • This is Konami, not Sega. Sadly, it’s unlikely, as the cost to license a title from major international player like Konami is probably sky-high, compared to a smaller firm like Marvelous.

      • JonathanisPrimus

See: Suikoden: Centennial Tapestry staying in Japan.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I thought the first Frontier Gate just did okay or even bombed. The game itself is a very nice game so i really love that Konami intent to continue this franchise considering currently Konami had quite a little title IP that they continue to improves.^_^

    • MrTyrant

The fun part is part of the gameplay and story scenes, while it can be repetitive like most games like this it was fun like you said and I did enjoy the dialogues between your partner and your character. The turn based battles were fresh in this kind of games.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Yup.^_^ It is kinda sad that many gamers seems to dismiss it simply as MonHun clone when even the basic gameplay it not the same.
Hope the second one will do well and maybe we will be able to see the second itteration coming here.^_^

  • kroufonz

good news tri ace still alive.

i really wish some one could hire tri ace for making ps3/ console rpg again:(

    • MrTyrant

I really miss a Valkyrie Profile or Star Ocean. Even if they do a completly new game it will be alright if it’s an spiritual succesor of those two.

  • Pockystix

kinda sucks that we missed out on so many RPGs for the PSP

  • And I’m still waiting for Valkyrie Profile 3…… or Valkyrie Profile 2 HD is fine.

  • riceisnice

    It’s a shame we’ll never get this game… Ever…

  • Göran Isacson

Can’t say I’ve heard of this game before. Anyone out there who can tell me what Frontier Gate is, how it’s played, if it’s any fun etc?

    • ErhmagerdWerds

I sank many hours into it, I thought it was really fun. It’s a monster hunter with turn based battles. I really hope this gets an English localization b/c the friends who played it w/o knowing Japanese had a hard time with the kanji for what they were supposed to find on the quests.

      • N M

Actually, it needs a port to 3DS, because no one is going to buy it on PSP over here. Especially since it has no small amount of voice acting. Then again, Beyond the Labyrinth never came over here, so who knows if they would port and localize it. If you haven’t seen lately, Konami is beyond incompetent when it comes to games they publish.

  • Richard N

Oh there you guys are, where have you been!?

  • Sigh. No one seems to want to use Tri-Ace for what they’re actually good at any more…

    • bonafide

      What would that be?

      • Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile Are the ones that I think of.

      • Awesome battle systems. :P

        • bonafide

Huh, true… man, I miss the Star Ocean games (the first three anyway), and especially what they did with Radiata Stories.

  • $24431191

I miss Tri Ace. Star Ocean 3 is one of my favorite games and, although it had problems, SO4 was actually pretty good as well. We definitely need a Star Ocean 5 in this world. The battle systems in SO games are so addicting and fun.

  • z_merquise

Kinda late to ask but anyway, whatever happened to that engine Tri-Ace was presenting a year ago?

I mean they can’t just waste their time developing their own new engine only for them ending up developing few portable games, right?
(not saying developing games for portable consoles is a bad thing)

  • Riseabovethesky

I played Infinite Undiscovery this spring (and Star Ocean: Second Evolution just before that). For a game that was supposedly mediocre at best, I really had a enjoyable 30 hours or so of gaming. The wave of JRPGs on Xbox 360 in its first years made me buy this console and I wish it had continued thereafter with less interruption in the flow of releases.

    • fayt255

Yeah the 360 did have some great JRPGs Magna Carta series was my favorite on Xbox though.

  • $36598391

“Last year, Konami started releasing RPGs again”
I hope that means they will be making a Suikoden VI or do some more Digital Releases on the Playstation Store

  • puchinri

More than anything, I want tri-Ace to work on an original title again. New SO or Valkyrie titles would be okay, but I’d like a (new) IP.

  • Clifford Michael

Frontier Gate was pretty fun for what its worth.
