Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Demo Is Much To Our Surprise Region Locked

By Spencer . December 12, 2012 . 11:38pm

Konami released a Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo on PlayStation Network. You can download it from Japan’s PlayStation Store, but you cannot play it unless you have a Japanese PS3.

The Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo is region locked.

While we have seen some region locked software such as Persona 4 Arena and the Joysound karaoke system designed for Japan, Revengeance is the first region locked demo on PS3. The demo is not available on Xbox Live since Konami canceled the Xbox 360 release in Japan. Perhaps, Konami is planning to release the Revengeance demo for both consoles at a later date? We’ll get in touch with them and post an update if we get a response.

  • Wait what

I’ll simply never understand the point of region-locking. I sort of understand it when it’s like Nintendo of America region-locking their systems so Americans don’t bypass them and buy directly from Nintendo of Japan. I don’t agree with it, but I understand they don’t want to lose sales. But stuff like this, modern day games and now DEMOS? What could they possibly be gaining by stopping more people from trying out the game?

    • Kai2591

      haha weird innit?

    • Christian Wright

they dont want us to see how weird they are :3 but I seriously think it’s a culture thing. look how the U.S. reacted to rapelay. and look at how other games are received in each country. for example, over here (US), games like neptunia, atelier, etc are “shit rpgs” and skyrim and mass effect are “THE GREATEST RPGS EVER MADE”. vice versa in japan. stuff like that.

      • AkuLord3

That doesn’t sense…seeing how we can download OTHER Jpn demos and even then everything you said doesn’t make sense. Also Rapelay=Metal Gear Rising lawl

        • Christian Wright

it does. thats why ex troopers isnt getting released here. it doesnt fall into our standards

      • That only became a issue doe a fan patch and that it was being sold on ebay with that said fan patch, oh and not legit. It was also years after the game was out tbh not something region locking will solve aka Piracy anyhow.

    • Suicunesol

I thought it was the opposite. Nintendo of Japan doesn’t want the Japanese buying Nintendo consoles from America because American Nintendo consoles are priced much more cheaply.

  • Andrew Austin

    This doesn’t bode well.

  • kangms872

japan is love love a region lock

  • And some Atlus fans thought that them creating the first region locked PS3 game wouldn’t start a trend…

    • Yes a huge fucking conspiracy.

    • Luna Kazemaru

Lol oh boy here we go

    • Herok♞

The thing is companies have always been able to do this, do you really think Konami said: “Hey Atlus did this lets do it to, its not like we are own company that can make decisions for ourselves no its because someone else in business did it that’s the only reason we are region locking something.” Also this really should matter if you really want to play the demo its not like its completely unavailable, you could rent or borrow someone else’s Zone of Enders HD if it means that much.

      • No, but they (like I assume most companies) probably didn’t even realize it could be done until Atlus did it. Or at the very least that Sony would allow it on their ‘region free’ system.

Then again, the PSP is region free too and it still got that region locked BattleZone game…

        • HilariousNPC

Your theory’s great, except that, as Spencer posted in the actual article you’re supposedly complaining about, Joysound did it first.

So, I guess that means your theory’s about as great as John Romero’s Daikatana?

  • z_merquise

I blame Joakim Mogren on this.

    • SolidusSnake

      Swedish people ruin everything!

  • AokiShizuku

This isn’t a good sign for those who want to import the game. Also, I’m curious about the demo that came with ZoE HD, does this mean that version of the demo is region locked as well?

    • z_merquise

No reports of it being region-locked so I think it’s only this JPN PSN demo.

  • amagidyne

What the fuck is the point of that?

    • TheCynicalReaper

Boost ZOE HD sales since it comes with a “free demo” of this game.
      …Either way, it’s stupid.

  • SolidusSnake

    • kangms872

      yeah, exactly

    • TrevHead

there’s probably a ring of truth to that considering ZOE HD has only been out in PALand for little over a week. (great game though, for the 360 that is.)

    • TheCynicalReaper

This makes the debacle make SO much more sense.
Man, Konami/Kojima, what happened? I used to have so much respect for you back in the day…

  • Go2hell66

It is a sad day for gamers everywhere

    • Luna Kazemaru

Not really since I both ZOE HD lol pretty sure a few others did to.

      • Go2hell66

well i can only get ZOE tomorrow, so its a pretty sad day for me :(

        • Luna Kazemaru

that sucks well the demo isn”t that long pretty short for a demo imo

          • Replay value, yeah i know, you have forgotten the meaning of this two words, i dont blame you, its the mayans dude, the mayans predicted all this shit.
the second videogame crash is near.

  • Chris Yuen

A R3 PS3 brought in Singapore should be fine right? Might give it a try then. Frankly speaking, surprised and disappointed to hear about the region locking as well.

    • Souji Tendou

Nope. A Region 3 PS3 means you have an Asian PS3. You need a Region 2 Japanese PS3 (not Region 2 European PS3).

  • Alex Sargeant

Let’s not get too worked up about this. Clearly Japan had free access to the demo after a short while. ZOE HD did only just come up two weeks ago in the EU so I can understand why they didn’t want people to be stuffed with this.

This is absolutely not a trend in the making. There’s a very clear reasoning here, which is that they didn’t want EU gamers to think that they were tricked into buying ZOE HD only for their demo discs to quickly become worthless.

I can’t imagine a US demo being too far away.

    • TheCynicalReaper

No, it’s still stupid since anyone who buys a GAME for a DEMO is just…
Come on, now. That’s just silly, to put it lightly.

      • chaicube

Thousands of people bought the original ZoE just for the superlative MGS2 demo. ZoE itself wasn’t very popular at the time.

  • Kai2591

    I hope this doesn’t become a trend…

    • Luna Kazemaru

Nintendo has been doing it for god knows how long so yeah…

      • AkuLord3

Wait we could have download japanese demos on Wii/DS before? When was this?!

        • Luna Kazemaru

        • SolidusSnake

Uhhh, I think you misunderstood this post. Unless you somehow played Famicom games on an unmodded NES, it sure would seem that Nintendo has been leading the region locking trend since the beginning.

      • Kai2591

Yeah I know that…I meant for the PS3. I hope region-locking will not become a trend for future PS3 games.

  • ronin4life

Expect region locking to only get worse…

  • Japan hates you…

They don’t give you what you want.

    • Luna Kazemaru

why is it people love to post crap like this it slightly annoys the hell out of me…

      • only slightly?

        • Luna Kazemaru

Because I know people say ‘things’ when they are upset yet its still annoying.

          • I love it. Yummy tears.

          • Luna Kazemaru

            lol this kid.

          • They still card me!

          • SolidusSnake

Me too, despite my epic neckbeard. It annoys the hell outta me!

  • Asanti Jackson

Why would u region lock a demo. Especially when the lack of region-locked content is a major selling point for the PS3. I hope Kojima and Platinum know what their doing.

    • landlock

So you have to be buy Z.O.E. if you want to play it.

  • SoulEater98

What is the point of this? Why region lock a demo?!?!

  • Nitraion

    Me sad sad lol..
Edit: wow i see people have lol misunderstand on this move lol…
U see MGR demo has been included on ZOE HD on both US and EU while japan ZOE HD doesn’t have demo soo platinum game giving them demo now while region locking it means that ZOE HD buyer on US and EU not become Useless Bluray…. while i’m sad i can play the demo but i shall wait until february…

    • Aoshi00

While the US ver of ZoE HD has the Raiden demo on disc, the first press Jpn ver of ZoE HD also came w/ a demo, but it’s a DLC code. I d/l and can play that Jpn demo on my US PS3 though, guess it’s different from this new demo (I just tested it and still works). The ZoE trailer code that came w/ it was region locked though, since the video section on Jpn PSN (for movies and such) has always been region locked, so I couldn’t redeem the other DLC video :(

Was hoping Revengeance would have dual audio as a Platinum game, guess it won’t just like MGS 1-4.. sigh, might get both ver again..

Also Sony is retro locking Vita DLC by accounts (+ 2nd memory card / fty reset), before the CFW update only the fty reset was enough.. otherwise I would be importing Muramasa.. so I guess one could say it’s not going into a good direction.. I hope they don’t lock the Jpn DLCs on PS3, I think they might start doing it now, last time my Xillia & 2 couldn’t load some DLCs before..

      • Nitraion

Hmm i dunno about JRPG but MGS voice IMO is better in english don’t get me wrong i seen jap voice scene in youtube they just weird to me especially snake…for me war themed game (not an anime) its better in english especially to distinguish between nation…but i have liking for british accent like jessica or yangus in DQ 8 and it seems in ni ni kuni they have some english accent too… i just like it… or bayonetta english voice actress lol…

        • Aoshi00

I totally hear you, it’s definitely more suitable as the game was more international featuring different accents, Russian, South American, etc.. I’m not saying one dub is better than the other, I just have the habit of collecting playing both Jpn & US ver for the past MGS games (I’m used to both David Hayter and Ootsuka Akio, also love Horiuchi Kenyu and Inoue Kikuko).. thought it would be great if the US ver has dual audio so I don’t need to double dip, like Platinum’s Vanquish.. Bayonetta didn’t have Jpn dub though, I kinda wish they dubbed it in Jpn too just for comparison, of course I loved the Eng dub :)

It is weird the DLC demo works w/ the Jpn ZoE HD, while this new one is region locked..

          • Nitraion

Hmm DLC code? so its like special edition or something? if so well maybe they just want US and EU buyer not feel useless buying ZOE HD like i said above but if you ask me it’s not really reasonable reason really i hope they release demo too in US or EU store if not well just waiting on full game next year XD

          • Aoshi00

Yeah, Jpn only got a dlc code to download the demo instead of a demo disc, came with early copies like preorder..if they were to reward those who bought ZoE, it’d have been exclusive, but now they are putting it on Jpn PSN, not sure if us demo would follow soon.

Btw, not only was the british forDQ 8 was good, the Jpn game actually didn’t have voices at all :), so they went the extra mile with the localization

          • Nitraion

            Wow that’s news to me lol…. O-o
            good job Level-5 localize team…

  • AkuLord3

mmm even though i have the demo because i got the collection but i know some friends and people who didn’t so this kinda sucks especially those who don’t want to get ZoE collection just to try the demo (though its an alright collection with good games~)
    Hopefully a US demo soon?

  • Did anyone stop to think that they might release an English demo at a later date?

    • Luna Kazemaru

No because that would be smart.

Also there is kinda the chance where they might not due to it being in both the EU and NA versions of ZOE. Tho I’m sure konami isn’t really going to assume everyone bought it.

      • I agree it would be smart lol, but that would be too easy. I also agree about the ZOE part though. If they don’t release a stand alone English version of the demo then that means that they want everyone to go out and drop $60 so they can make some extra money and then we get to play the “FREE” demo.

Either way, the rage in the comments amuses me. Keep it coming guys =P

        • TrevHead

Dunno how much you are paying across the pond for ZOE HD but it’s only £20 here in the UK.

    • Scrooge_McDuck

Well duh? Doesn’t change that region locking a demo is incomprehensible, though.

      • I’m sure they have some kind of reason. Only time will tell though.

  • Vitor Duarte

    Not reasonable.

  • Tales_of_Master

This is really sad news :c Although I already tried the Demo from the ZOE HD Collection, I was still looking forward to see the reaction of other people who didn’t play it yet. I don’t get the point in region-locking games, let alone Demos. I hope that Konami will remove the region-lock, or at least release a Demo to other parts of the world.

  • Prinnydoom

oh crud this isn’t good. Really hoping this doesn’t become a theme with game companies. Doubt it will be you never know.

  • E15

*was in the middle of downloading the JP demo..*

  • malek86

This certainly speaks a lot about what they believe is the reason people are buying ZOE HD for, and their general trust in the series’ appeal here (and they may be right too, I’m sure there’s quite a few who are splurging simply for that demo and don’t even care about the games).

  • TheCynicalReaper

    A region locked DEMO?!
I understood why Atlus region locked P4 Arena (I won’t agree with it, but I understand it), but to region lock a DEMO is…it’s criminally idiotic. There’s just no excuse for it.
“Oh, what if the other country gets our demo? That would cut into the sales of our…demo?”
See? Idiotic. Shame, too, since I was kinda looking into this title, but between this and the bastardization of Raiden’s character…

Forget this idiocy. I’m going back to play the masterpiece MGS4. At least there nothing sucks (well, except for the Raven boss fight on Big Boss mode, but you know).

    • Nitraion

      Chill man it’s only a demo ==”
the game not locked… i know solid snake or bigboss is always awesome..
but give chance for raiden to play as MC too

  • Maybe they have got tired of westerners saying that their games are shit so this is their way of saying “you wantu goodo gamu? fucku you baka gaijin, enjoy your QTE festo with blockbusteru plotu and pretty graphicsu insteado, ZETSUO!!!”

  • Casey McMahon

I am happy I own a Japanese PS3 right now!

  • SirRichard

I’m beginning to think Konami are going out of their way to be obtuse.

  • Casey McMahon

This is a amazing Demo. Great take on the Metal Gear Universe. It feels like Bayonetta and Solid Snake had a Baby!

  • Got a bunch of Grey Foxes up in this piece amirite?

  • jeb

    Thanks Atlus…just thanks..

  • I wouldn’t even have noticed were I back home as my PS3 is the white Lightning LE one. Guess the demo codes included in ZoE-outsourced-to-lowest-bidder-HD-collection are the culprit here.

  • TheGameTagerZ

I have a japanese PS3 I played it yesterday. Lots of fun I had more fun than I thought I would.

  • Mr__A

It was a thank you for the donations we made through the PS store for Tsunami relief.
