Here, Have Some Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Artwork

By Spencer . December 24, 2012 . 4:05pm

We’ve seen the silly 2ch rendition and a scan of Lightning’s new costume in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Here’s artwork of the outfit care of Square Enix.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is slated for release in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

  • that looks painful to wear…..
but more importantly is she wearing pants?

    • Kaihedgie

Many FF characters wear uncomfortable clothing. They do this simply for Rule of Cool, not practicality

      • Aoshi00

Lol, that’s true.. I remember Christian Bale said the Batsuit was hell but he still thinks it was an honor to don it.. I was just watching the outtakes of Resident Evil Retribution, Milla Jovovich and Li Bingbing didn’t seem all that comfortable in their outfits as Alice and Ada Wong either :)

Not sure about Lightning’s new outfit here.. the first one was normal clothes, then goddess-like w/ feathers in 13-2, now a more demonic-looking black armor, looks like something from Soul Calibur :).. the half covered arm parts look a bit weird.. I dig the shades though :)

    • TheDarkEmpress

      No pants, just pantsu.

  • malek86

Still reminds me of Saber from Fate/EXTRA.

    • ElRobotico

      No, just no.

    • amagidyne

I’m upvoting you because I hate everything Type-Moon.

      • Go2hell66

        The hell happened to you?

        • amagidyne

I bought a crown from an old dockworker in Northern Scandinavia.

  • hoping that the NA/EU versions will also have original japanese voiceovers, just like the Asian version…….

    • JustACynic

      >Dual Audio
      >Final Fantasy

    • Kaihedgie

      Wrong thread

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

  • I’m *trying* to like it… but I just can’t.

    • If I am honest, neither can I.

    • ResidentMetroid

      Same here.

    • Sergio Briceño

I can’t say I like it right now either… But I have a couple of cosplayer friends who would look really sexy on it.

    • Chiupon

thank god for costume changes amirite?

    • Mr_SP

      It’s like… Leather Sailor Moon.

    • You’re not the only one ;)

  • This is a great way to sell costume DLC! At least this is better than Serah’s stupid outfit from FFXIII-2.

    • LustEnvy

I will be buying her FFXIII outfit IMMEDIATELY.

  • Marcelo Henrique Chaves

    That’s the weirdest outfit ever:

    It’s not a skirt (with dysfunctional pockets);

    it’s not an armor (a slap on her bareback can kill her);

    Boots with panties (hope that doesn’t become a thing);

    Half cape (God i hate those);

And the shield (that was attached to her shoulder, so that she can use her hand to show the middle finger to the guy/gurl who made her put the damm shield on her shoulder).

  • wez

what happens if she wants to raise her left arm?

  • The return of the bigger breast strikes again. Even if the actual model clearly disproves this.

    • You’re saying that because one looks unevenly sized right?? …now that’ I’ve seen it…I can’t unsee….

  • LustEnvy

Yup. First round of DLC better have her FFXIII outfit. That is all I’ll ever need. She looks like another Nomura reject with this current uniform.

  • Alfy Masamune

LOL! She looks like an idiot!

  • Levin_Scorpius

That outfit wouldn’t look so awkward if it didn’t show so much skin in
such bizarre places. I mean, seriously, the undersides of her arms? Her
sides? I’d also complain that she should wear black tights or leggings
or something like that, but that wouldn’t matter as much if the top part wasn’t just so… stupid.

I mean it’s like they put “Sexy Dracula Warrior Princess” sprinkled with a healthy dose of “Stupid Reject Shounen Anime Character Design” over top of it, put it in a blender, force fed it to Nomura, and then forced him to puke it up.

    • Ethan_Twain

Oh man, if you object to ridiculous outfits you should just quit out on this franchise entirely. This is hardly the worst offender I think. My personal favorite ridiculous outfits are Fran and Basch fon Ronsenberg from FF XII. FF XIII-2 had a pretty good go of it too with the feather-quarter-skirt thing though.

Or you could just come to appreciate FF costume design as something you laugh at, rather than something you laugh with. Then the franchise costume designs become a highlight all over again.

      • Chiupon

this atrocity is nowhere near Fran’s outfit.
I actually thought her piece was well designed — Basch’s vest was a little weird though, I’ll give you that. Okay really weird. I’m actually replaying 12 right now and I feel like Fran’s just an excuse to bring the Victoria’s Secret fashion show into the game. like wat Fran even runways when she walks
        nobody does that in irl
        unless they’re tyra banks
omg what if fran is really tyra banks

        • Ethan_Twain

Well if you want to get all competitive about it then there are a couple standout costumes in FF X-2 that deserve further inspection too. And Penelo. I have the limited edition FF XII and the imported soundtrack (only thing I’ve ever imported… so worth it) so I’ve got a lot of high quality stills of the costumes in that game and they’re all pretty bonkers honestly.

As in all facets of the game, thank god for Balthier classing up the joint with his totally logical and svelte threads.

      • Levin_Scorpius

Yes, Dracula Princess Lightning is definitely nowhere near the worst offender, but I currently subscribe to the method on complaining about horrible outfits as they appear. After a certain point in time I get desensitize to them and they become mere blurs after while (unless it’s something especially terrible.)

In regards to FFXII’s lovely little collection of, uh, ‘outfits’, let’s just say the only people there who could put a reasonable outfit together basically amounted to Balthier and the villains. And XIII-2’s problems pretty much were poured all into Chocolina, with a little bit seeping over into Serah. Really, Final Fantasy character design kinda fell apart in Final Fantasy X.

I appreciate costume design when it works, whether it be in a serious or comedic sense, but here it’s just amounts to being extremely stupid.

    • MediaMindControl

The undersides being exposed with skin is true to many types of armor. I still don’t think this one is out of place for the FF universe. Fits quite well actually. Not saying I’m a huge fan of it or anything, but I’m sure many people agree with you, and though I’m not one of them, I’ll defend your right to speak your opinion to my own demise.
This outfit has a lot of potential so long as the world matches the outfit well, and brings some reasoning behind the whole design.

  • Crevox

As someone who doesn’t care about costumes…

    Whatever. It’s fine.

  • I do think this is the epitome of rediculous FF armor.

    • Kaihedgie

      ExDeath and Golbez

      • Golbez gets a pass because he matched that ridiculusly sized tower you fight him in. ExDeath gets a pass because he’s a tree or something.

        • Kaihedgie

Golbez inexplicably turns into a Zaku wearing that helmet.

Don’t care if you’re a tree or not, that’s just not practical one bit :U Even his real form as Neo ExDeath had eyes.

      • Touche. But at least their armor can believably give them some protection, I don’t see how battle panties and…whatever that thing on her right arm is supposed to help ._.

        • Kaihedgie

How about actually being able to move, let alone, see

          • Well to be fair they DO have magic. In Dissidia Golbez floats and teleports, ExDeath can teleport but he walks slow as ass. I agree with the seeing thing.

          • Kaihedgie

I already know that, and I have both games

Why excuse them though and not let this pass?

  • Brandonmkii

Does she transform into a waverider?

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

I like it except the XIII part of it, Don’t get me wrong I love her XIII costume but the material combined with the armor look just doesn’t blend imo, If it was made of some kind of shiny black leather sort of material it’d probably look a bit better but it looks out of place. I still like the costume though and that one part doesn’t ruin it for me

    • komiko12

She ripped her old XIII outfit and stuck it to her new armor.

  • りんごタルト@エスカのアトリエ

That’s one chuunibyou costume in there, Squeenix.

  • Pythia Brixham

Okay… remove that weird arm thing, the cape, and give her some damn pants or biker shorts at least!

  • DragonSix

It draws our eyes to her crotch, it’s almost hypnotic.

  • Paradox me

    • Kaihedgie

      Goddammit XD

This actually would make for an even more awesome Gundam, honestly.

Also, Siliconera should cover Gundam Extreme Vs more since a particular suit was just released.

    • LustEnvy

      Heero: Mission Accomplished.

    • OatMatadoQuatro

He will selfdestruct the Wing Lightning Gundam!! Don’t worry about Heero though. He is made of iron or something like that.

  • I’m sorry, but this outfit just doesn’t work well. The other outfit in the trailer, when she was fighting, looked a little better.

  • Daniel Curtis

She took Snow’s coat from the first game and made it a part of this uniform.

  • Kaihedgie

I still can’t believe people are whining about practicality or “fashion” in Final Fantasy of all franchises. Unconvincing dark armor under long drapes? No, that’s bad. That’s horribad

The apparent extinction of cetain bovine species in FFVII, the horrendously complicated clothing of FFX, one of which features a character who might as well be wearing duct tape and another whose fur robe strapped together with a plethora of heavy belts should have simply fallen off to reveal her dangerously risque and topless bust and grinding down a wire from an airship at high speeds…but somehow does not: That’s terrific.

    Good gravy.

    • Lulu’s belt dress was when Nomura was going through a belt and zipper phase in his designs. LOL

      • Kaihedgie

      • It is said he designed Lulu’s dress to challenge the CGI staff. I can just picture the smiles on their faces when he came up with that…

    • Final Fantasy clothing has always looked ridiculous.

This one though, looks ridiculous AND ugly. It’s almost a compilation of every single disfunctionality in FF armor design together in a single frame. Tidus’s Blitzball uniform looked silly but served a purpose and was designed around a theme. This… thing Lightning’s wearing looks simply random parts of her previous uniforms sloppily combined, plus some accessories put in places where they serve no purpose at all.

      • Kaihedgie

So tell me exactly what is the function nothing but shorts and a tank top serve a big breasted melee fighter? Or armor on a god so excessive it makes freakin’ Garland look like Sonic in comparison

        • Let me rephrase the comment on Tidus’s clothes: he plays a sport. Everyone in said sport wears the same kind of clothing. Therefore, in the context of the game, his clothes make sense. There’s logic behind his design. Lulu’s infamous belt-dress is all kinds of insane but at least makes up for a uniform which resembles the classic black mage design.

You’re absolutely right in that every single scantily-clad fighter in the series dresses nonsensically, but not all of their clothes look UGLY like Lightning’s do.

          • Kaihedgie

Except that Tidus isn’t playing Blitzball all the time anymore. He’s frontline infantry for a very important individual, armed with a sword, no less. Last I check, Black Mages didn’t dress in such an absurd fashion. Quite the opposite considering that a Black Mage’s features have been very obscure, not…that.

You call it ugly, I call it awesome. This is Final Fantasy and I’ve long since come to accept everyone dresses ludicrously, the point of arguing about this and that is very much futile. There’s technically no clothing starting with FFVII that makes no sense, anyway. This is not some beauty pageant or fashion contest, it’s a video game

  • Go2hell66

I actually dont think the costume looks that bad guess there must be something wrong with me

    • D H

Nah. It’s just different, so it’s getting hate. Really, I think that’s all that there is to it, it just isn’t what people were expecting, so they start to dislike it right away, then nitpick it. Personally, shoulder shields make a hell of a lot of sense to me, and if you disagree, Tallgeese would like a word with you…

Sure, it’s not practical for protection… but the best protection is, if you can pull it off, to be light and fast enough not to need the protection, isn’t it? Who cares if I’m not wearing leg armor, if I don’t give you a chance to hit me there? Sure, it can backfire, or it can work well.

Also, we have no idea on the context of the armor either. For all we know, she awoke from her slumber without any clothing, and had to make do. It seems really silly to criticize something without knowing anything about it?

Also, it doesn’t look like a half cape, since there’s a split down the middle (you can see it on her right side, between her body and arm). If anything, it looks like the former sleeves from the jacket that the bottom is part of, sliced open and free flying…

Plus, look on the bright side. At least you can tell what it looks like, unlike anything Amano touches…

      • porkiewpyne

For me, I don’t really mind it that much either. If anything, it’s her pose in this pic that seems a bit …. unnatural or something. Which makes the costume almost awful. At least it didn’t seem all that bad in the trailer :)

      • David Fowler

Its not so much that it isn’t what I’m expecting ( after all, I don’t like it. ) and its not because its ‘different’. Its because its unappealing. Lightning’s Valkyrie armor was “different”, but it was GOOD. Shoulder shields are okay, but the design looks forced. Everything about it looks forced, really, except the shield. And we do know the context. The context is that bhunivelze made her wear it because he said so. Yeah. Bhunivelze has no style. While practicality in final fantasy has never been a big player, at least the designs worked. Here, it just looks forced.

    • Kaihedgie

I don’t see the problem with it either, although someone is really bent on downvoting anyone and everyone who so much as thinks it’s okay

  • Hmm I like it but not? Maybe if it was more on the pants side or less metal? There’s something about that feels off. I am looking forward to the game though I’ll probaby wait til price goes down haha.

  • Souji Tendou

Still ugly, urgh. Who’s the character designer anyway? It seems it wasn’t Nomura.

  • LustEnvy

Or rather, she looks like a Zaku.

    • MrTyrant
      • LustEnvy
        • MrTyrant

But Zero Wing is ugly and the show too…..I know…It fits Lightning and FF XIII perfectly. Everything makes more sense now.

          • Kaihedgie

That’s Wing Gundam, not Wing Zero

          • OatMatadoQuatro

I wish I could differentiate them. It’s easier in the OVAs though.

          • Kaihedgie

It’s not that hard at all. Wing has a single buster rifle with a red and white shield and yellow wings. Wing Zero has boosters hidden in wings that can fold open and close and of course, the TBR. You could also take a look at their torso. Even their flight modes are different. Wing looks like a starfighter crafted to look like a bird and Zero looks like a more traditional shmup starcraft.

          • Luna Kazemaru

Did you really just call gundam wing ugly?

          • if you think wing gundam ugly, I guess you should look up katoki design of it?

      • OatMatadoQuatro

Oh god I hope that she won’t act like Kamille.

  • I like it a lot. Reminds me of Assassin’s Creed for sure.

  • Syed Sameer Rahman

I think it meshes well with the overall concept of Novus Partus so far.

  • I liked the original FF13, but this is getting kind of stupid, now.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I dunno why I just thought of this, but I think a beret would be perfect to go along with this outfit. On the other hand, I need to start FFXIII-2

  • The outfit definitely looks better in motion than it does in a stand still. Just my opinion though.

  • Tien Ron

i just don’t like the middle is a horrible design choice *IM MY OPINION* cause the black looks horrible not to mention the leotard design bottom…. but i dunno…. guess we have to get use to it….they should of kept her scarf which would of being really nice.

  • Syed Sameer Rahman

The perfect release date for the game would be 13th of March 2013 (13/3/13). But I guess that be asking for it a bit too soon….

  • Settsuo

  • At least she’s not wearing the glasses.

    …or taking them off flamboyantly.

  • Paulo Suchoj

I think it would look cooler without that crazy shield-thing and the spike on the shoulder… With a more closed armor on the torso, not so revealing, that’s not like Lightning at all. She can be sexy without trying this hard.

Drop the crazy cape too, it’s crap.

And hopefully we won’t have to stick to this lunatic design of clothes for long. It’s the only let-down for me ’till now, and I’m a die-hard Lightning fan.

  • YouGusta

If they give her a white hoodie, she will look like Altair female version.

  • David Fowler

I personally like it…. Just not on Lightning. I get that its supposed to give off this “imposing” feeling of “power”…but its just not fitting for her. She looks like a resident evil demon slayer, which isn’t bad per say…its just that shes not really a demon slayer…or from resident evil. I will say that the art designers are displaying as indirectly ( and yet as directly as possible ) their armpit fetish. I See what they did though

What they did was they tried to give her a combination of some form of military armor of hers ( what, don’t tell me that those side butt flaps of hers don’t look familiar ) which is shown in her collar and boots, but the actual armor is her paladin armor amplified with POWER. Add those things together and you get this.

Things that have to go: The split cape. I can guarantee that that wasn’t in the initial design before a certain someone meddled. “It looks great when shes moving!” Yeah, well Lightning isn’t always moving. I know you want to emphasize her elegance and omgflawlessness (because face it, she is ;3) but, she needs to wear something that looks great on her at all times. Either keep the leg flaps or the cape, but you can’t have both. It looks tacky.

Nakedness. I agree with one of the earlier statements that her body is showing in odd places. In this case, more is more. While I’m sure a lot of fanservice went into this idea ( fanboys and fangirls everywhere who have that lesbian feel every time Lightning has one of her many moments of badassary) there are just some places where it feels like she could wear a little bit more and pull it off ( even if its just tights, as an earlier user posted.

Giant pockets of awesome. I know that its a throwback to her old peace corps uniform but it worked better there because A) they weren’t huge and B) because they weren’t on the side of her leg-butt flaps. They were on her jacket, where pockets belong. If the legflaps are kept, remove the pockets. It was a nice attempt at referencing the original 13, but in the end it just comes out as forced and like a good excuse just to have her more naked, which is something that already throws off the outfit anyway.

The armor itself just needs to be redesigned. The black and red idea was good, but some of it just comes off looking weird. The gloves are fine, but the black shiny metal-things on her arm look odd. The shoulder guards don’t need to be as pointed, as lightning seems like the type to go with something a little more practical. Those don’t look practical, just brutish. Slim them down to move with her shoulders, not stick out. The centerpiece, the body armor, just looks questionable. If making Lightning 50% more naked is really the art director’s agenda, then I think it would have been better for them to give her something similar to her old torso armor in 13-2, take out the middle ( though I’d rather it be kept) and keep the bottom.

The color scheme is great ( once you take out the giant pockets that don’t fit at all. ) as well is the shield. The sword looks…like there wasn’t much effort put into it. You’d think that, like her shield, they’d go for something over the top with a lot of black and complex designs. But no, its pretty bland. I’ve always liked Lightning’s weapons because of the complex design ( the transformation aspect of course gave them a reason to make it complex ) but here you don’t get that. While blunt works for lightning, her weapon just looks uninspired. I’d harp on this more if it wasnt for the fact that I’d be trading it out as soon as I stole one of the behemoth’s weapons anyway, but that doesn’t mean that the base weapon should just look boring. Use the same effort you used to make her shield and put it into the sword and you’ll have a fantastic weapon.

My god this is a lot, and if you read this all thank you for your time. I love the 13 series ( I wouldn’t be here otherwise ) and I love Lightning. I want the best for her and thats why I gave such a long, harsh criticism of her outfit ( or at least harsh by my standards ) because I want the best for her and…well…this is not it.

Bhunivelze… Take this into deep consideration before I Black Materia, Grand Cross your ass back into the “Other Realm” that you came from. K? ;)
