Killer Is Dead Screenshots Come Alive

By Ishaan . January 17, 2013 . 12:05am

Grasshopper Manufacture’s next game looks… like a Grasshopper Manufacture game. Killer is Dead puts you in the shoes of Mondo Zappa, whose job is to kill other killers. Cue the large swords, beautiful women and crazy badguys.

Earlier in the week, Famitsu magazine ran a reveal of the game, and we reported the details, which you can read here. Now, they’ve shared the first screenshots from the game, and you can take a look at some of those below, and the rest over at

That is some sexy cel shading.

    • Bumping you up because you actually used the proper terminology and spelling of “cel shading”. Props to you, sir.

    • Seriously! cant wait to see some gameplay of this

    • Zonic505

Seriously. I’m digging the game’s style & cannot wait to this in motion.

  • heartless141

X_X this is what NMH could’ve look like if it started on a HD console?

    I’m SOLD!

    • puchinri

To be honest, I’m not sure that’s completely the case. Then again, while the aesthetic is close (probably because of some of the intentions Suda has in paralleling this with NMH and Kill7), I think it’s still something unique from what he would have done with a HD-NMH (in part because of everything he’s said/saying about the game).

      • Solomon_Kano

Yea, there’s a bit more to the aesthetic here than NMH’s. More than can be put on the Wii not being HD, I’d say. If I had to put this game’s aesthetic next to another, I’d say it’s more MadWorld than NMH. It looks like MadWorld with color instead of white. Lots more black in here than NMH had, seeing as NMH was actually pretty bright visually. Looks like Suda’s out to put the shading in cel-shading lol.

I do think he just meant that NMH’s cel shading could’ve been this good, though. Not that it’d actually look like KiD.

        • puchinri

Oh, exactly. That is a great way of putting it.

Yeah, to me, NMH was very satured and bright, and it had a strong focus on its colors (and filters). Haha, definitely agreed though. >u<

Ahhh. I suppose so. Fair point~.

  • Go2hell66

    Thats hawt…

  • tubers

Borderline reminds me of GR shading xD

    That blonde! hnnggghhh!! :P :D

  • Elvick

Sexy art design. Have no interest in this game though.

    • AkuLord3

yeah you totally know u don’t want it when u haven’t seen a lick of gameplay at all…truly sir you are the best

      • Elvick

God forbid I not be interested in something. I don’t owe anyone an explanation as to why either. I didn’t say the game was a piece of shit.

I praised it’s art design. In fact, my comment is more praise than negative. Since one person online saying they don’t have interest in something is hardly a negative at all. It’s a personal opinion, that I did not force upon anyone else or expect anyone to agree with.

        Fanboys. Ridiculous.

I hope whoever thumbed me down feels better. Because you are sad.

  • gamefreak86

Day one. ill wait for limited edition announcement and localization.

  • That looks really nice. I hope it’s better than their last two games, and it looks like it might very well be.

    • Zal_Yagun

to me it really felt like Shadow of the Damned and Lollipop Chainsaw were just 2 other games he helped on instead of Suda 51’s memorable insane work of art. too much creativity in one pot doesn’t necessarily make it better

      • They were just…tropey and boring. Felt like they were appealing to the lowest common denominator rather than attempting to be really creative.

        • puchinri

That about sums it up. Also why I was so disappointed in them after NMH2 (which also disappointed me in ways by the end, but still was good).

          • I enjoyed some of the fights in NMH2 but it didn’t hold a candle to the original, playing things by the book as opposed to being a deconstruction of video games and otaku culture. It also lacked the ‘quiet moments’ we see in Suda’s earlier titles (eg. exploring the barren streets of Santa Destroy in NMH1, or walking around in Garcian’s trailer in K7, pieces of surrealism that I find fantastic)

          • puchinri

Yeah. To me, I felt like he started to do a cool deconstruction of a lot of things with NMH2, but in the end, kind of copped out and didn’t (almost backtracked).

And while I wish Santa Destroy was a bit more fully/lively, I did like it and I really appreciated being able to kick back in Travis’s apt. Those quiet moments are pretty nice and do a lot for the games to me.

  • Art-style>raw graphics.

These screens look amazing. Looking forward to seeing a trailer.

  • Raoni Marques

Graphics are looking wicked. So excited for this game and I bet it will be great, since Suda51 never let me down!

  • Rolling Guy

    Sounds like NMH.

  • disgaea36

yes this has all the nostalgia of killer 7 def. a pick up.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Very nice. I can appreciate the rich colors they’re using here. Now to wait for gameplay…

  • My, my what a babe. I don’t know what is more gorgeous, the blond or the graphics! ^_^

    • Darkrise

  • ndjn3979

This looks damnnnn good. Now, if only the gameplay is not too quirky…

Looks like they are sticking with Gonorrheal Engine.

  • $39420547

i have high hopes for the future of suda51 so i will be checking this out
any chance this will get a wiiU release?

  • I really wanna see some gameplay cuz those sreens look really really nice

  • Valtiel Ikari

this game looks like it will have some insanely dosis of awebassery!

  • Göran Isacson

I REALLY want to see this in action, because as cool as this style is I have to admit that all the colors and weird grainy filter action going on here has me confused as to what we’re actually looking at here. I am excite, not saying that I’m not, but I do hope that I won’t have to squint at the screen in order to discern what’s going on. Also- dat arm cannon.

    • puchinri

I am so glad that it’s not just me. It looks pretty in parts, but at the same time, I really can’t tell what’s going on at least half the time.

      • Göran Isacson

Yeah, I think this game kinda has the same problem I have with the new DmC- there’s SO MANY colors that they don’t really blend and mix into something cohesive and easy on the eyes.

        • puchinri

Hah. Yeah. When I watched my friend play, it was quite pretty, but my art professor really drilled it into our brains about the use of overly bright/saturated colors and the use of them, and I think NT really could have balanced it better there. (Lots of pretty colors, but they end up clashing in cases more than coming together.)

          • Göran Isacson

Oh, art professor? Did you study something art-related, or was it just a course you took because it looked interesting?

          • puchinri

Well, I am incredibly interested in art as a student, but I can’t do it as a major, so I just classes in it when I can~.

  • Wow it looks similar to Killer 7’s art style, so awesome.

  • frantisek

killer 7 hd much? i love it

  • Cameron Ward

well, artistic wise its beautiful as always

  • Richard N

Looks as awesome as ever, but as many others have said none of Suda’s game has reached the same level of abstract oddity of Killer 7. Which isn’t a bad thing, but I feel like everything he’s done since since then has been what’s expected of him. I wanna be surprised again and just completely thrown off like I was with Killer 7.

I don’t know that’s me being selfish, I’m sure the game will be fine. Graphics look ridiculously delicious though!

    • Have you played any of the pre-killer7 stuff? flower sun and rain and the syndrome games are just as wonderfully bizarre. unfortunately FSR is the only one available in English.

I do agree with you about his post killer7 work, however. I thought the first NMH was quite a wonderful and surreal critical look at otakudom and youth–the rest has all just been a bit derivitive.

Damn Suda teasing us with the Silver Case DS port and then canning it…

  • Game looks amazing already. Looking forward to Siliconeras reaction when they show Mika. =^_^=

  • DarthSithZero

Hoo hoo can’t wait Suda51 Games gets better and better

  • Gorgeous cell shaded screens. This game looks amazing graphically, now I want to see some gameplay to go with it.

  • Gettin’ it, that is all.

  • Good to have the old Grasshopper visual aesthetic back, but I’ll have to wait for a trailer to see whether it’s truly faithful to the creative insanity of their vintage material.

  • TruSpindash

It looks really nice, I can’t wait to see this game in motion. I have yet to not love a Grasshopper game, so I am really excited already.

  • Darkrise

This. Is one of the most sexiest looking games I have ever seen. And I will get it. With no hesitations.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

I think we are seeing the best looking console game out there.

  • puchinri

I am a sucker for a man in a suit, and he has his look together just right. The ladies are pretty lovely too, and I love an all around gorgeous cast. What I’m trying to figure out is this link between the criminals and how much more inhuman they look. Wondering what type of messages Suda and team will go with this time. Also, so wishing there was a Shinobi to play as~.

On a closing note, Mondo’s roommate looks like good cosplay material. I may have to start paying close attention to her outfit and shopping for some similar stuff.

  • puchinri

I think I’ve figured it out. Mondo is Henry and Travis’s lovechild (or Henry’s, at least), and this is an alternate timeline of NMH where it crossed with Killer7 and Monod’s boss is the Sylvia in this world where /spoiler spoiler spoiler and hence why her accent is different/not as obviously fake and why she’s working with this company. And the boss of the company is Master Jacobs after being forced to make a living for his estranged – maybe kidnapped – daughter but he got caught up in it all.

Phew. Yeah. I think I got this game figured out now.
