Let’s Take Another Look At The Romance Game With Sherlock Holmes’ Son

By Spencer . January 27, 2013 . 9:30am

English Detective Mysteria is one big mystery novel mashup in an otome game. Emily, the main character, lives with her Butler in London and is searching for answers about the death of her parents.

You can chat with Sherlock Holmes Jr. and William Watson Jr. offspring from the Sherlock Holmes novels. Johann Lupin Jr. is the faux son of French thief Arsène Lupin. The Japanese detective Kenichirou Akechi is inspired by Edogawa Rampo’s books. Who will you partner with to solve Emily’s mystery?

English Detective Mysteria comes out on March 7 for PSP in Japan.

I wonder how many people realise that the term “Sherlock Holmes’ Son” is an oxymoron. =P

Then again, this would hardly be the first time otome games have taken more than a few liberties with the concepts and characters they try to work with.

    • JustThisOne

And what are the chances that Watson’s son chills out with him!

    • Wackoramaco87

If you don’t mind my asking, why is it an oxymoron?

      • Tom_Phoenix

Beacuse in the original novels, Holmes is essentially asexual, at least towards women. While he does act like a gentleman, his interest in women is limited to how they are involved with any given case he is working on. Needless to say, that kind of makes it difficult for a “Sherlock Holmes Jr.” to exist. =P

But as M’iau M’iaut said, this wouldn’t be the first time that retellings have gone against the original material.

        • Wackoramaco87

Oooh! That makes sense, haha. I haven’t gotten around to reading the books (yet!) and assumed the movies/other media at least got his romantic interests corrent. Thanks for the answer! =)

    • M’iau M’iaut

There has been more than one retelling of Holmes mythos where offspring has been involved or hinted at, and not just fan fics.

  • SirTeffy

I definitely saw Jack the Ripper in there. And Moriarty, natch. Also Miss Marple.

    • Miss Marple?

      • SirTeffy

One of Agatha Christie’s detectives – she was a middle-aged old maid who solved mysteries back before female detectives were a thing.

In this, she looks like a loli. She’s in the character overview.

    they’re bishounen…. sigh

    • Sweet Sui ♥

You say that as if it’s a bad thing… :P lol.

      • DCBlackbird

not bad but extremely prominent these days

        • Firekitty

You would prefer a cast of ugly characters?

          • DCBlackbird

um now we’re headed in a direction based on opinion and appeal of the shoujo art direction which i have nothing a against….

    • M’iau M’iaut

It’s an otome — you were expecting a bunch of brofist gamerz? :P

      • DCBlackbird

i wasn’t aware of that….sorry the title of the headline caught my attention

    • Well… there are some otome game out there tht has older man…..

      • DCBlackbird

don’t get me wrong i don’t hate bishounen i just noticed after looking at a lot of japanese games and animes…..that there’s a lot

  • Wackoramaco87

This looks pretty interesting, and it’s from the same company that brought out that fairy tale game as well. Hopefully the storyline is decent and the art work is quite nice! Thanks for posting these articles, I’m happy to see otomes get a bit more notice! =D

  • Sweet Sui ♥

This is quite lovely, if I do say so~ *w* I gotta say, even if this game never comes over to the west, I still really appreciate the coverage that Siliconera has towards otherwise obscure otome titles :3 This site has introduced me to plently of otomes that I likely would have not known existed had it not been for it including Hakuouki- one of my favorite games with one of my absolute favorite characters- so for that, I thank you, Siliconera staff ^_^ lol.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

This is absolutely awesome. Aksys, are you guys interested on this? :P

  • It has detective element in it…. I suck at solving crime if KnS is any indication >< But I still want to play this to see how they handle the characters and story :) (Especially Jack the ripper…..lol)

  • Lazulis

Gosh, if only there was a big psp/otome following in NA or EU to warrant all the localizations of all these otome games.

And Jack Mirrors…is Jack the Ripper right? He’s datable…and he was in a jail cell…but he doesn’t look crazy or seem evil…? Split personality? Sigh, here’s hoping for a fan patch…

    What? No Fantomas?
