Capcom Will Not Hold A “Captivate” Event This Year

By Ishaan . February 22, 2013 . 12:30pm

Capcom will not be holding their annual “Captivate” event this year, where they discuss their portfolio of games and even announce new ones, the publisher’s senior Vice-President, Christian Svensson, has revealed.

Over on the Capcom forums, Svensson shared: “This year we’re likely to be looking at announcements around other events or not at events at all. So there isn’t a Captivate planned this year.”

Svensson added that Capcom will be making appearances at E3, Comic-Con and the Penny-Arcade Expo.

I was expecting Captivate so they could announce a new Darkstalkers >.>

  • ronin4life

Well, last years was pretty bad for a number of reasons…

Also “not at events” = Nintendo Direct(and of course similar things, if not their own)

  • Strain42

Was there ever any follow up on that “Games you’d like to see on the eShop” survey? I remember they kinda got peoples hopes up by making it sound like AAI2 could get localized there and I don’t recall hearing anything since then.

    • Farid Belkacemi

The top men are still working on that one…

      • Strain42

        Well…Good…I think?

        • Farid Belkacemi

          Nobody knows :D

  • eilegz

hopefully we get news about remember me which its the only new game that im interested in.

  • Solomon_Kano

Whaaat!? I always look forward to Captivate, we usually get some nice stuff out of it.

If this year’s announcements will be centered around events and and not-events, then I’m guessing we get nothing til E3. PAX will most likely be them showing Remember Me.

    When is PAX btw?

    • PAX is March 22nd – 24th.

      • Solomon_Kano

So, yea, PAX is gonna be all about the more imminent Remember Me and the further off Lost Planet 3.

        • Farid Belkacemi

And something for Ace Attorney 5 perhaps ? :)

          • Solomon_Kano

I think that one would be too much for PAX. That either gets a Nintendo Direct announcement or they save it for E3. My money’s on E3.

        • I… forgot Lost Planet 3 existed. It’s been pretty quiet on that front of late.

          • Solomon_Kano

Yea, I had to dig deep to remember that one haha. I kept thinking Capcom had announced another game, but I couldn’t remember.

I don’t think we’ve seen it since its initial reveal.

          • Anime10121

Dead Rising 3’s been confirmed too, I believe, at least I think.

  • epy

Don’t really care as long as I see some of that Megaman stuff they promised.

    • Solomon_Kano

Don’t get your hopes too high there. They said last year was Capcom Japan’s celebration and, well, that’s where all of Capcom’s development muscle is. This year is Capcom USA’s celebration, so we shouldn’t see much.

I wouldn’t be mad at them spending the year porting MMX, MMZ, or Legends games to PSN/XBLA/eShop.

      • Farid Belkacemi

They should release Legends 3 “demo”. That’s why I bought a 3DS in the first place… This and Zelda : Ocarina of Time 3D :D

  • Ultimately, I think this is a good idea. I think playing it a bit closer to their chest will help put their hands back on the wheel, for better or worse.

  • So it ends :(

    Deep Down news Please~

  • Göran Isacson

I can’t say that I’m supersad about that, as it probably means they’ll concentrate more on other events. Call me old-fashioned, but I liked it when the big events like E3 was the go-to place for big news, instead of everyone splitting up into their own events.

    • Anime10121

Agreed, kinda takes the spark away from E3 when 95% of the big announcements are announced in the weeks prior to the event :(

  • Anime10121

Well, unfortunately, Capcom has failed to literally captivate me for the last few years, the biggest reason of course to all that know me is the whole Legends 3 thing, but then theres:

The last few RE’s imo being lackluster, Revelations was better, but still not as good as 4 and the games prior.

Devil May Cry, was glad when they announced a demo, but let down when I actually played it, the gameplay was FAR better than anything Ninja Theory had done prior, but still imo not anywhere near as tight as 3, or 4, if anything, I’d put it right below 1 as far as gameplay goes (though the camera is much better in the new DMC). I figured that the story would at least be better with the reboot considering that’s one of NT’s best aspects, but even though the story flows better in the reboot, it still kinda sucked to me. The final fight in DMC is nowhere near as epic as the one in another entry (that I will not announce for risk of spoilers) was. Dont get me wrong, 4 wasn’t that great either (especially considering 1/3 of the game was replaying the game in reverse with Dante, although the gameplay was tight as ever).

MVC3, was excited as all heck when it was announced up to hearing that the gameplay had almost been extracted completely from TvC (while a good game nowhere near on par with the original MvC/XvS type series). The game was fun, but not at the level that I enjoyed the originals, that I still play to this day with my brothers and some of my old friends. The whole thing about them announcing DLC for MvC3 only for them to cancel that and change it to an “Ultimate” release about a half a year after the originals release kinda irked me too, (especially because I figured I’d be safe buying the original considering they’d never done a “ultimate-super-hyper” edition of the vs games). Oh and one more thing can I HAZ HD sprites please (something similar in style to Blaz Blue? I think they would look SO much better than the 3 dimensional characters they use now, the characters have lost a lot of their, well “character” in their transition from 2D-3D.

Lost Planet kinda turned to crap after the first one (which at least had an interesting world), its sequel was just a game to throw multiplayer in and a story that I never cared about.

Dead Rising 2 was ok, but honestly I dont know about a third one, unless they can come up with some real unique twist or something.

Dragon’s Dogma never really grabbed me (which I found extremely odd considering its, if I’m not mistaken, from the DMC3/4 team).

    Megaman issues

Megaman ZX- story left on cliffhanger with likely a very small chance to see finished

Megaman Classic series, sorta left on cliffhanger after 10’s hint at Bass or Zero on Wily’s computer monitor, cant really remember which, oh and how about Duo and where he disappeared too?

Megaman Legends series- story left on cliffhanger with likely a very small chance to see finished

Missing series that I want to see return to consoles (or even handhelds for that matter) that I know Capcom is probably leaving for Dead

    Viewtiful Joe

    Breath of Fire

About the only good thing to come outta capcom in the last few years to me, has been Street Fighter 4.

We may be getting AA5, but unfortunately, I never really cared much for that series, or Monster Hunter either for that matter :(

So, regretfully, Capcom, who used to be tied at number 1 for my favorite developer has fallen off of my top ten completely as these last years has seen Capcom veer away from the types of games I used to love from them, in favor of catering to a different market/gamer. Honestly, I dont think I’ll miss Captivate at all this year. Best of luck to them and all that, but man do I miss the old Capcom :(

Edit: Welp, that was longer than anticipated, but it just kinda goes to show how much I’ve been kinda just “disgruntled” with Capcom lately.

    • Pockystix

pretty much agree with most of this, ‘cept for Dragon’s Dogma

      that game rocked
