Drakengard 3 Is Being Made By Deadly Premonition Developer Access Games

By Spencer . March 13, 2013 . 12:51am

image Since cavia doesn’t exist anymore Square Enix had to hire another developer to make Drakengard 3. They could have hired Marvelous AQL which made The Last Story, but instead they chose Access Games to make the title.

Access Games is probably best known for making the cult hit Deadly Premonition. They also made Lord of Arcana and the PSP/Vita sequel Lord of Apocalypse for Square Enix.

Drakengard 3 is slated for release in 2013 as a PlayStation 3 title, according to Famitsu. The girl covered in blood is Zero, the protagonist in Drakengard 3.

That flower reminds me of the Lunar Tear, which reminds of of trying to farm those things…
I’ve never played any games in this series. I’ve always wanted to, but I played Nier already, so don’t hate me :(

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Don buri! You don’t really need to play Drakengard to understand Nier. Aside from the bizarre and interesting story, gameplay wise it’s not very fun, and Nier is based off it’s short, non-canon bonus ending.

      • MrSirFeatherFang

I remember spotting Drakengard 1 and 2 while hunting for brand new PS2 games. I was going to get them but they were snatched up by the time I had enough money :( I knew the game didn’t get rad reviews, but I was still interested in it. (also it was kind of weird #2 was published by Ubisoft in NA.)
I already played Nier though. It’s pretty cool how they made a whole game based off a non-canon ending. Maybe all developers should do that.

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

In europe, both Drakengards and Star Ocean 3 were published by Ubisoft. I don’t think Square-Enix had a proper publishing branch here up until 2004-2005.

1 is worth playing for the bizarre storyline. 2 has tighter gameplay, but not much tighter, and it also lacks 1′s bizarre charm (Yoko Taro was not involved)

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

According to this article, Yoko Taro is back at the helm…

“They could have hired Marvelous AQL which made The Last Story”
    am i missing something here?

    • MrSirFeatherFang

I believe Cavia was absorbed into Marvelous AQL

      • http://www.facebook.com/Asch91 Mohsin Faiq

oh jesus, by the last story the author was referring to drakengard 2 (or nier). i thought he was talking about sakaguchi’s game .-.

        talk about confusing rofl

        • Guest

I think there’s a mixup with AQ interactive, which absorbed Cavia and made The Last Story

          • http://www.facebook.com/Asch91 Mohsin Faiq

            OOOOOOOOH, this explains everything

  • FoliathR

The Last Story is mostly developed by Mistwalker and less by AQ Interactive actually.

Maybe a slightly more accurate way is to focus on the fact that Cavia is absorbed into AQI, and then into Marvelous AQL.

Really sad that Cavia is no longer around to continue this series (loved the first 2 games), here’s hoping Assess Games can continue the legacy and uphold the standards set by Cavia.

    • SuperBrother

Didn’t a previous article say that nearly the entire original team was returning for this one? I know for sure the guy behind the story and the guy behind the art are on board. Essentially, if you enjoyed the first two (and Nier) you this should put smile on your face… or better yet, knowing the team, a really big frown accompanied by emotional pain, tears, and questioning your existence and the meaning of humanity…

  • AnimusVox

I’m glad they still have the same character designer working on this one.

    • Soroth23

Ive read in other posts that they got the ENTIRE Cavia team back together, which would be quite the feat. But thats a major plus if they did, and it can only mean good things for the game. Heres hoping.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Very excited about Drakengard 3 =^_^=

  • Tom

Where?! Where do I sign up for the limited edition pre-order?

  • Tom

I played through Nier just a year ago. I listen to it’s soundtrack ever since and I’m listening it right now and hearing this good news makes me feel so good. I hope Drakengard 3 will have many marks of Nier.

  • Victoria [Rokuso3]

    Release this year??? YAYYY~~

  • neospite

Think I’ll have to track down Drakengard on ebay and give it a try. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Nier but it had its charm.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I know Deadly Premonition has its fans and somehow made itself into a cult hit, but hearing these guys also made Lords of Arcana fills me with more doubt… that one didn’t do so well…

  • Brandonmkii

This is….pretty cool news. At least the story will be interesting, with Taro at the helm again.

  • Prithivi

Great! I’ve been thinking of playing both Drakengard for a while, now I have the perfect excuse! =D

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1598149010 Rayhan PromisedGallery

i’m hoping there won’t be separate versions of game with Mama Zero and Sister Zero LOL

glad i just finished replaying both Drak.1&2 and Nier last month

  • Ferrick

I’m kinda confused here, in the last article about this game, it says that old developers are coming back to make this, but then its made by Access, not Cavia ?

    • Solomon_Kano

Old team members are working in leadership positions, but the legwork is being handled by Access. I would imagine this means that not everyone from Cavia stayed when they were dissolved into MAQL or MAQL let them be involved anyway.

      • Ferrick

hmmm i see, never the less, i’m really interested on how this will turn out

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha oh man, I’ve actually been reading into the many strange and different turns that Cavia has taken since it’s dissolution and even I’m confused right now. I suppose that one is to assume the big names behind the cavia team which made Drakengard have been hired to help Access games get it right… though I am now confused as to why they didn’t just hire AQ Interactive to begin with. Quick question- have Access games done anything beside Deadly Premonition?

    • SirRichard

Well, as the article itself says, they made Lord of Arcana and its sequel for Square Enix before, so they have a working relationship of some sort going on.

      • Göran Isacson

Huh. From what I can tell they did improve the gameplay (or at least make it quicker) in Lords of Apocalypse, but none of them look as compelling as Nier gameplay wise (MonHun-style gameplay is not really what I want for this game, see). Though I guess one can always hope that with a bigger budget and the guidance of some people who DID make Nier, they’ll make this a far more interesting game. I wonder if they’ll make this more like Nier, or try on the Dynasty Warriors-esque gameplay of the first Drakengard now.

        • brian

They also made a Metal Gear-style game called Spy Fiction that I never got much into.
I tried it out, controls are pretty clunky iirc, but maybe I need to try again.

          • Göran Isacson

Yeah, most of what I’ve seen of their games have been “servicable”, so to speak, with Deadly Premonition being the only one I really LOVED. We’ll just have to wait and see how this goes, I guess.

    • Scrooge_McDuck

Takamasa Shiba is the producer of both Drakengards and Lord of Arcana/Apocalypse. It makes sense for him to use the people and team he’s used to.

  • SirRichard

Key Cavia members in leading positions and the rest being handled by Access Games? This went from “vaguely hopeful” to “incredibly excited” in about a day!

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

Never played this series, but I’ll see if I find the earlier ones.

    • Göran Isacson

Fair warning- first game is slow as mollasses and very brown and ugly. Story is magnificently messed up though. Sequel is the opposite- story is far more by the book and not very engaging, gameplay is much quicker and responsive.

They’re not… what I would objectively call good games. Interesting, yes. But not good. Worth if you can find them cheap, but don’t expect too much.

  • Adol Christin

The protagonist Zero has a really nice design.

  • GibbRS

Just recently finished NieR with the first two endings, so this is exciting news indeed. I never was able to get the last ending in Drakengard… ugh that white/black pattern mini-game. >____<

  • Toni König

Uh~ A singing heroine bathing in blood …
Let Akiko Shikata of Ar Tonelico fame be the singer!

    • aquagon

That’s asking too much of her, considering she’s the main composer and sound director of Ciel Nosurge. And if that wasn’t enough, she’s quite busy already doing the preparations for her next concert and the release of her next album.

  • Rolling Guy

If the story is as good and tragic as NieR, definitely buying this.

  • gustave154

    Yesss drakengard is back!!
Had a crush on caim’s sister back in the days lol…

  • Ni

GET HYPE! Nier is favourite game of this generation. The same about the Drakengard on the PS2.

  • ndjn3979

Wasn’t Deadly Premonition really bad? I figured it flew under the radar for a reason.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Dead Premonition is godly. No seriously it was highly praised except it’s technical glitch which I believe are mostly fixed in the new PS3 version

    • brian

I’m pretty sure all games that fly under the radar do so for a reason.
      1) they got released in the month FF13 did: Resonance of Fate
      2) unappealing graphics to it primary audience: Nier
      3) got middling reviews: Nier again, despite being solid at very least as a game and GOTY at best overall
      4) low budget release: Hakuoki, Dept Heaven games, etc
      5) released at the end of a console lifespan: Sakura Wars
Deadly Premonition was probably marketed towards the wrong audience, because originally I thought it was just some normal horror game and had no idea it was really quirky.

      • JustThisOne

It’s sad, because I was looking for something really quirky, but dismissed it as some regular horror game when it first came out.

But after checking out some clips, I’m pretty interested.

  • http://twitter.com/Death_Saved Nasser Al-Ojayan

I remember how weapons changed form upon leveling them up in the
first game, i was desapointed when they removed it from the second.

I really hope they bring that feature back.

    • Nitraion

Wow you notice that… hi five bro..XD
      i have same feeling

      • http://twitter.com/Death_Saved Nasser Al-Ojayan

Glad to see i’m not the only one here who wants to see that back.

    • Mazdian

NIER had that! Hopefully some of their experience from NIER will transfer over.

  • Haunting Horror

So there’s actually going to be a character who has hair longer than shoulder length in this series? Awesome! XD

  • Masa

not sure what to think of this (loved the first two)

It looks very anime-ish compared to the first games, just hope it isn’t fanservice ecchi crap, plus two sisters, hope they are nothing like Lightning and Sara.

  • zackner

I’m glad for this announcement I hope this game make me feel good how made Nier

  • MaskMask

Drakengard was an amazing game. Looking forward to this.

  • Valtiel Ikari

I’m throwing money at the screen but nothing is hapening!!!

  • l777l

    She looks good.

  • Vash bane

if Access Gamesmade LoA then this game will be awesome sence i liked it both XD

  • Testsubject909

So, if I put cream in my coffee, I’ll have a dragon?

  • raymk

    Love these character designs.

  • artemisthemp

Anyone can tell me, what Drakengard is?
    Never heard of it.

    • Mazdian

Game for PS2. Mainly noted for having a super depressing and twisted story. Censored for NA. Multiple endings. Gameplay is divided between ground and air (dragon). Lots of enemies like Dynasty Warriors. More cult hit, as it received mainly negative reviews due to repetitive and shallow gameplay. Has an incredible LP.

      • artemisthemp

        How censored?

        • Rollersnake

I think they removed any explicit references to a certain character being a pedophile, and toned down the incestuous relationship between two characters. I don’t think there was any censorship outside of the game text.

The storyline is extremely over-the-top grimdark fantasy (the two most frequently cited examples are one party member being a literal baby-eating cannibal, and a battle in which you massacre an army of child soldiers), and it has an amazing chaotic soundtrack composed entirely of cut-up orchestral samples. Unfortunately the gameplay is mediocre at best, so you’re probably better off just reading The Dark Id’s LP than playing the game yourself.

          • artemisthemp

Sound more like something done for Sweden or UK
