By Ishaan . March 21, 2013 . 10:30am

Square Enix have released a batch of new screenshots for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, showing off more of the new Dead Dunes area in the game. The Dead Dunes is a desert area and Lightning will traverse the area to gain information from a mysterious village around an oasis. You can take a closer look at the town in the screens below, including the various shops and inn.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this Fall.

The game is looking a lot better than it did a few months ago. That’s pleasing to see. Now, I just have t hope it plays well and that the story is enjoyable.

  • Unlimax

I can imagine playing this on PC in Full-HD and on High end Settings like Tomb Raider ..
but unfortunately its not gonna happen .. ever ~

    smh Square :[

Edit : don’t be so sensitive on PC Gaming either way the game isn’t coming to PC , and of course we don’t support piracy at all .. I repeat AT ALL .

PS: Just imagine Lightning on TressFX Technology ~

    • Syn

What on earth are you talking about O_o

  • M’iau M’iaut

Hey it is a new FF13 thread! M’iau sticks his head in the door and smiles.

“It seems there is bit of the FF11 desert and dune areas represented here. Carry on, carry on.”

But for some reason M’iaut went out of his way to hide what he was carrying behind his back.

    • Wake

“Ah. A FFXIII/DmC post. It’s time to go to work.”

      *Puts on shades*

That’s what I imagine mods do when a FFXIII or DmC post comes up.

  • JustThisOne

Not going to lie, the environments are fantastic! If there were larger versions, I’d slap it on my desktop…

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Now that time is messed up I wonder how much you pay to stay in an inn for one night.

  • Tien Ron

ugh lightnings clothes >_< it's like they crashed and burned trying to thing about weather to keep her old clothes from 13 or have new ones. i don't mine different costumes just don't make it apart of the story like 10-2 did it worked for 10-2 not so sure for 13's lighting. but oh well. the background looks amazing though.

    • maggosh

Says everyone ever, which brings the point to the point of cliche.

  • DesmaX

    … I’m getting Uncharted 3 vibe in this…

Boy, I hated that desert part… Hope this isn’t going to be the same

  • EverEndingStory

Looks like it has some actual personality.

  • gamerdude

The clothes look 100% terrible :[
Why can’t they get nomura to design those is he that busy with versus?

    • KnifeAndFork

Nomura isn’t even designing the clothes for Versus. Fashion designer ROEN is.

    • LightZero

It’s not like Nomura is that good of a designer. Fortunately ROEN is doing the clothes.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Its pretty

  • http://www.facebook.com/magius.necros Magius Necros

Shops look more like a flea market IMO. At least they are THERE. Costumes I believe are terrible in design which may be intentional. The desert however looks great.

    • ShadowDivz

I loved how in 13-1 the simple fact there were no shops really bugged me.
      It felt….empty.

  • Rogerrmark

    DAT last picture.Oh god D:

I wonder if there will be animation of Lightning eating a baguette?

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    dat skirt

    • M’iau M’iaut

So she uses the same dye for both her hair and her clothes. Other than the smokin’ hot pants leather look, what’s your point? :P

      • http://twitter.com/Vietgeta VietGeta

Not sure what his point is. My point is that I can most likely do some kind of camera angle trick and look under it.

        • KnifeAndFork

          we all do it

          • ShadowDivz

            *lowers head in shame*

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

Square-Enix’s consistent beating of a dead horse is draining. It’s not FFXIII-3, it’s what FFXIII again should have included in the first place. And the consumers keep egging this crap on.

  • http://twitter.com/DarrylThinks The Letter D

The screenshots are looking good. I can’t wait to see more gameplay videos.

Tri-Ace is helping with map/world design again methinks.

  • Lazulis

2nd to last screenshot: Whoa Lightning, that is easily one of the worst outfits you have ever worn. It looks like a mish mash of stuff. And then she remembered she had to have bottoms. Everything else looks really nice though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Stephen-Mc-Devitt/100002626261475 Stephen Mc Devitt

I’m convinced that Tetsuya Nomura made the outfit awful on purpose.

  • Göran Isacson

Gotta admit, this looks WAY better than the Fortuna City stuff. Kinda curious as to how she made it out into the desert as I was under the impression she was just going to adventure inside that city… though maybe that was just a faulty assumption based on how the first PR-images were just pictures of the city.

    • Ehren Rivers

No, there are four continents in this game. One is taken up by Luxerion, the City of Light, whose main focus is a series of murders. Then comes this area, the Dead Dunes, which is supposed to be about ruin discovery and exploration. The other two areas haven’t been shown, but one of them is called the Wildlands and will apparently be covered in forests and hills.

Luxerion was the first area to be worked on, because it’s supposedly the area you get to first and therefore the most important for showing off early. From what we’ve been told you will have the ability to go to any of the four continents immediately though, presumably after the first scenes are finished. The four continents are connected by a monorail, but Chocobos are confirmed to return to the game and there may be other transportation too.

      • Göran Isacson

Gotcha- sounds a little bit strange to have them be so wildly different from each other and then just connected by a monorail. Makes one wonder how much the different places will “fit” thematically, so to speak.

        • Ehren Rivers

They aren’t MEANT to fit thematically with one another. The world of Lightning Returns, Nova Chrysalia, was created at the end of XIII-2 from the merging of Gran Pulse with Valhalla and Chaos infested everything, twisting it and basically making everything go crazy. The four islands/continents you visit in Lightning Returns are all that is left of the world when Lightning wakes up, approximately 500 years after the end of XIII-2. There’s nothing around them but an ocean of Chaos.

It’s also worth noting that each continent has a number of things separating it developmentally; In this game they opted to a separate design team working on each continent. They collaborate and check in with each other regularly though, of course. For another, each continent is supposed to have its own theme some of which adds gameplay to that area. In Luxerion, for example, where you’re trying to get to the bottom of a rash of murders there are several missions/storyline sections where you temporarily gain stealth commands and sneak actions.

Part of the reasoning behind this is to give the players a chance to experience whatever they want to. If you want to spend all of your time in Luxerion, you’re free to do so. If you want to while away the end of the world sliding along waves of sand in the Dead Dunes nobody is going to stop you. The areas will be connected enough that it will be easy to play, but have enough unique about each of them that it doesn’t feel like just reskinning for a fresh set of fights.

          • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, this is the awkward moment where I admit that I have not yet finished FFXIII-2 (other games i had to review got in the way of leisure time) so I had to skim this and stay away from any parts that sounded spoilery, BUT I do semi-like the concept that one can play in the different areas as if they were different games, if only because it sounds interesting. If it WILL be interesting in practice is one thing, but it SOUNDS cool.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

Yup, still looking very good. I’m glad we get to see Lightning in her other outfits too. That last outfit with the skirt is awesome. Looks like Lightning is being a little more casual in this one lol =)

  • Detrimont

ok, i liked the costume before they revealed the lower half, it’s still not terrible(like people are saying), but still, not the best.
also, people who are saying it’s terrible, I actually want to see you design something better.
