Metal Gear Solid V Trailer Is Ground Zeroes + The Phantom Pain

By Ishaan . March 27, 2013 . 11:50am

As reported earlier today, Konami and Kojima Productions have officially announced Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. An extended trailer for the game is available for viewing now, and you can watch it below:

Metal Gear Solid V will be an open-world game. The game begins with Snake waking up in a hospital after having been in a coma for nine years. The game is in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and is currently running on PC.

  • Guest

    I rike it.

  • Go2hell66

sigh… really gonna miss joakim, he seemed like a cool guy -_-

    • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, did anyone actually say if he was CG or not? Or was it someone who worked for Konami and exists in the real world?

  • PoSiTiV3tEnSiOn

A small part of me was hoping that MGSV – The Phantom Pain was indeed a VITA game, and Ground Zeroes was its console counterpart. In retrospect, I don’t know why I bought into those rumors to begin with – seeing how gorgeous these graphics are.

Also, I really dig the music in the trailer.
It doesn’t match the atmosphere at all but at the same time… it just feels right.

    • idrawrobots

it doesn’t really match the time frame either.

  • 60hz

great graphics but pretty dull trailer… i’ll guess i’ll wait till more is shown.

    • Sardorim

This is Metal Gear Solid. Cutscenes are taking very seriously in this series and it has a lot of talking and not just pewpew!

      • 60hz

well it would have been nice to show some gameplay mechanics – i’m probably in the minority here but i play games for the interactivity not for the cutscenes… just my opinion but past the graphics nothing was riveting but i did like the fire boss guy…

  • I hope they sell these jackets as part of the merchandise.

    • Solomon_Kano

I’d buy the hell out of an LE that came with that jacket.

    • Zal_Yagun

Getting huge deus ex vibe from this

  • cloudcaelum

    My god is Kojima!

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

It has to be Big Boss in the 70s. The whole coma thing has to be related with before Peace Walker or it would be ridiculous since Big Boss went through three comas.

    • Zal_Yagun

Considering that big boss lost his arm and was in a 9 year coma, (operation snake eater was in 64, portable ops in 71, and PW in 74) its not really possible to have anymore major events with in the timeframe.

Not like MGS had anything ridiculous like a flaming whale eating a heli

      • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Remember the first trailer? It was about Big Boss not being able to tell the difference between dreams and reality. The trailer has Volgin on fire and only Big Boss saw that.

  • Isaac Newton

I just don’t know but I feel that is not the two snake we all know……..
I see an Ocelot look alike and it has a white hair compare to snake while the fact that Ocelot is much younger to snake hmmmmmm……
    It’s very WATER to me…………

    • XiaomuArisu

      Its Big Boss
Kaz Miller is in the trailer
The HQ from Peace Walker is in the trailer
In the Ground Zero trailer he wants to save Chico and Paz .two Peace Walker characters

  • This is the most surprising thing that has ever happened.

No, really, I DO think it’s really cool that Kojima/Konami wanted to do something interesting and unique with their promotion, but they shouldn’t have given us SO MANY hints. All we can really do at the sight of this reveal is chuckle and think, “so they finally said it, huh?”

  • Ali

so there’s two MGS’s in the works? Double the fun for me!

    • Brion Valkerion

Um its looking like the game is called Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain

      • Ali

I meant both MGS Ground Zeroes and MGS5 Phantom Pain – I can read lol!

        • Solomon_Kano

Not quite. From the sounds of it, The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes were MGS5 all along. Which is to say, they weren’t separate games. Kojima’s referred to Ground Zeroes as MGS5’s prologue in the past though, so I guess he meant it’s LITERALLY the prologue in the game lol.

          • alexis cortes

But didn’t they say that Ground Zeroes is for Ps3/360 while MGS5 is going to be for next gen consoles?, If I remember correctly, Kojma himself said that when he was interviewed in PAX.

          • Solomon_Kano

Nope. Ground Zeroes is part of MGS5, which is what this article is saying. During his GDC talk today Kojima reaffirmed that they’re aiming for PS3/360 before showing gameplay running off of a PC. Previously he said they’d consider next-gen, but that Ground Zeroes was targeting PS3/360.

          • alexis cortes

Yes, according to this article it seems GZ and TPP are, together, one game, but now, the latest article says that they’re indeed two separate games. I don’t know, maybe they’re trying to confuse us lol.

          • Solomon_Kano

Definitely trying to confuse us lol. Okay then, so which one is Project Ogre!? Ah. I give up. I’ll wait for somebody to ask Kojima in an interview lol.

  • SirRichard

I love that he just came right out with the trailer, and that it was so long and revealed so much. Exactly the reveal it needed and deserved, even it if it was kind of obvious because of all the hints, the run-up and all the wild speculation was worth it.

    I riked it.

  • Raoni Marques

Still coming out this gen? Sweet! Thanks, Lord of Video Games!

  • Rohan Viajar

wait so MGS V: is ground zero + phanton pain.

so does that mean ground zero and phantom pain are two story arcs and then combined into one game? or are the names just interchangeable because they are the same game?

    • Solomon_Kano

In the past Kojima called Ground Zeroes the prologue to MGS5. So I’m taking this as the game being called MGS5: The Phantom Pain, with the first chapter being called Ground Zeroes. It would fit with Peace Walker having chapter titles (off the top of my head, the epilogue was titled Outer Heaven).

  • Kinda looks like a different dev team

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Sort of, yeah. The game is being worked on by a mix of Japanese & American developers at a new studio set up in California.

      • I see. thanks for the confirmation.

  • idrawrobots

I’m already preparing myself for the “Not on Wii U” announcement. No need to get my hopes up.

    • Solomon_Kano

They’ve already made it pretty clear that Wii U isn’t included. Ground Zeroes was announced for PS3/360, it’s now been reconfirmed for PS3/360 as MGS5. They never mentioned Wii U, so I’m not sure why you’d have been holding out hope for a Wii U version. That doesn’t seem like something they’ll bother to announce when they’ve never listed it as a possibility.

      • idrawrobots

Well, when it comes out on the PS4 and Xboxwhatever, I won’t be surprised even though it hasn’t been announced yet.

        • Solomon_Kano

The difference being that Kojima’s listed the possibility of it being on the next Playstation and Xbox in the past though. When asked last GDC during Ground Zeroes’ reveal, he said it was something they’d consider.

    • Domii

What is more shocking to me is that it won’t be coming out for ps4, seeing as this generation of consoles are coming to an end.

      • DurableTomb

Do you recall how long they kept making PS2 titles after the current generation of consoles came out? Sony is not quick to abandon their systems like its competitors.

        • Suicunesol

I think it would be more appropriate to say that third parties aren’t quick to abandon systems that still have a lot of life in them. Sony itself would probably love if everyone moved onto the PS4, but third parties would hate to ignore the huge PS3 audience.

        • Domii

We’re talking about a major MGS game here. That’s like saying the next CoD will be coming to current gen systems only when the PS4 and company are on the way. It makes no sense.

  • Suriel Cruz

“We are extraordinary people…!” I like that song.

  • Heartek

I might be wrong, but this could be less of a retcon than it seems.
In the MSX games there were rumors of him having lost one or more limbs. Also, this can be read in Metal Gear Wiki : “In 1972, while Big Boss fell into a coma from being gravely wounded from
a battle, Zero brought his unconscious body to a lab where his genes
were extracted to make genetically enhanced soldiers. Solid Snake,
Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake were produced in this program, and were
known as the “Sons of Big Boss.””

    • Robert Hendrie

And peace walker is set in 1974, So that’s a different coma

    • Solomon_Kano

That would mean that The Phantom Pain takes place before GZ though, which wouldn’t work since the trailer shows us that GZ’s events come first. In the GZ trailer we Chico and they mention Paz, both of whom Big Boss doesn’t meet until PW in 1974. In the new trailer, we see what happens at the end of the GZ trailer, with Big Boss returning to evacuate Mother Base. He goes into a coma after that.

So unless Kojima changes the year from 72 to a few years later, this is going to have to be a different event. Good work on finding that though. Apart from the year, the events certainly fit.

  • Solomon_Kano

“Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is a prologue of Metal Gear Solid V,” he said. “Nine years after that event will be The Phantom Pain. Metal Gear Solid V is constructed with a prologue [Ground Zeroes] and the main game The Phantom Pain. The gameplay demo I presented today is the opening of The Phantom Pain, which is a tutorial that starts from crawling.”

    – Kojima

  • Awesome song choice, it really does fit the idea of foxhound.

  • Ferrick

well color me surprised @[email protected], and what’s up with that metal thing sticking out of the boss’ head

    • Solomon_Kano

They’re horns, actually. I think Big Boss’s turning into an ogre. Kojima’s hinted before that Project Ogre and MGS5 are one and the same, and he said outright that Project Ogre actually has an ogre in it. Perhaps, Boss is the ogre?

  • konsama

Wow, judging by the trailer, does this mean Ground zeroes isn’t an actual game but an actual part of MGS5?
Still If it isn’t, god, this is so much awesomeness to stand. >_<

    • Solomon_Kano

Yea, GZ is part of MGS5. It’s the prologue.

  • Haseyo

Snake is the Bruce Willis of video games. No matter how old you get, you just don’t die. In a good way.

  • anarchy_panty

Kojima likes Garbage, that’s pretty cool. Other than that, I’m still having trouble picturing this running on a PS3 or 360.

    • tubers

What made me scratch my head was why was it running on PC? Again.. Hope they release it on PC at least.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Good to see you after how much you got best up in smash bros

    • Solomon_Kano

      Wrong Snake.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

yeah th real one was in a box the whole time

        • Solomon_Kano

  • SuperSailorV

  • Gotta confess, this trailer registered on my hype meter just a little bit. Maybe not enough to compensate for the disappointment of MGS4, but a little.

  • Soma Schicksal

    Snake? Snake?!? SNAAAAAAAKKKEEEEEE!!!

  • Ben Sylvia

Metal Gear Solid V: Big Boss vs the Four Horsemen.

Edit: Also really sad seeing Mother Base getting totalled like that after spending so long building the place in PW.

    • Solomon_Kano

Seriously. I’m still kinda hurt by that lol. I spent ages building it up!

Kojima said we get to base build in GZ (well, MGS5 now), so if that means we get to build Outer Heaven in Africa then I regret NOTHING. That’s gonna be all kinds of awesome.

      • Ben Sylvia

Yeah that will be awesome, but still I bleed and got horrible thumb cramps trying to beat all those accursed tanks in the PSP version.

Whoever it is who destroys all that pain and suffering is going to feel it tenfold!!

  • Rolling Guy

Totes fanboying on this one as well.

  • Göran Isacson

Welp, called it. Now I’m just curious if the fire creatures come from an actual fire manipulating boss, or if it’s all just Big Boss hallucinating it all as he slips out of the coma.

So. Something goes VERY wrong at the end of the prologue mission and the mother base is blown up. Snake ends up in a coma, and when he wakes up he’s suddenly attacked by a bunch of people, and Revolver Ocelot is there on an actual horse. All the situation needs is a white horse, and it will be everything Ocelot has ever dreamed about. Now he just needs to get Snake to stop shooting at thin air so he can officially propose.

Also curious who the lady in the gas mask is…

  • JoJo_649

    • Dont hate the hayter. that in turn makes you a hayter… I think

  • Nitraion

i don’t have any complaint beside i want to play this game now…. D:

  • Sergio Briceño

MGS trailers never made much sense but they showed how fun a serious game could be. This doesn’t look to be an exception.

  • NightzeroAX

    Looks great.

  • notforsale

    V for victory XD

  • Vash bane

v has come to? so theres another clone?
