Skullgirls Getting Not Four But FIVE New Characters

By Ishaan . March 28, 2013 . 9:50am

Indie fighting game Skullgirls is getting not four, but five new characters, thanks to contributions from a generous community of fans. Last night, the game crossed the $825,000 mark, ending up with $829,829 in total contributions.

The fifth new character will, like the third character, be chosen based upon fan votes. The new character will be picked from the designs that developer Lab Zero Games have been revealing over the past few weeks. If you care to keep contributing in order to avail the contribution rewards, Lab Zero are accepting PayPal contributions via their website for the next two weeks.

As previously reported, the first of the five new characters, Squigly, is scheduled for release in mid-July, alongside the PC version of Skullgirls. While the new characters will be available for every platform, the PC version will be used to beta test each one of them, and adjustments made based on community feedback.

  • Skullgirls fans ain’t nothin’ to f%$* with!

    • Isaac Newton

Those fans where sooooo FRIGGIN RICH!!!

      • Dude I’m broker than a racist joke, I didn’t even think I was going to be able to donate to the fund last week even though I’ve been aware of it for a month thanks to the Cryamore fund. This is one of the few western developed indie fighting games that actually looks and plays as a viable contender in the fighting game genre that is trying to do something different especially with the art deco style going for it, not to mention many of the people working on it or that threw support behind the game are well known in other parts of the interwebs, so this show of support is not completely unprecedented .

Also I’ve been following Alex Ahad for some years now, I had completely forgot his designs were for a fighting game idea he had brainstormed up at the time until a few months before Skullgirls came out last year.

      • Shippoyasha

The average contribution was more than $50 per person. Very impressive!

      • We rich poverty

  • Punny Fuzz

I-I was there when it happened… There was so much anticipation and support, we crashed IndieGOGO when we reached the 825,000 mark XD

    • Urien (仙人をリンク)

We were all there. Including me. I was on Skullheart at the same time. The hype was so strong in the Skullheart IRC, and I was bringing hype from there to the stream too. XD

  • Tsunamori Nanashi

Soon enough Lab Zero will have enough money to take over the world. That, or add to the game ALL of the designs they have shown *unrealistic wishes*

    • They still have two make two more games, this is just merely an update to the current game with a handful of new characters. If they manage to get picked up by a publisher soonish to provide funds they can finish up everything faster and crank out a new Skullgirls game in a year or two from now.

      • Tsunamori Nanashi

I personally would prefer that they did it like Capcom did with Street Fighter, instead of making completely new games, re-release the same one a bunch of times with rebalancing and new content.

        • mutantmagnet

Yeah…that’s what we need. Super Skullgirls Hyper Tournament Edition the 3rd Strike. (I know your joking)

  • JustThisOne

EMERGENCY UPDATE! :D I know it’s a gaf comment, but it’s one directly from staff. What a nice surprise!

    • Armane

To get $40,000 extra dollars to play with does that mean the first party certification has been waved or covered by a third party? Either way that’s awesome.

    • James Reilly

It essentially means they managed to cut some political costs (nothing gameplay related so relax) from the budget. Gives them an extra 40k of breathing room which naturally gets them to 5th character story/stage since we were only 20k~ away from that

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    We pierced the heavens!

    • raymk

We can’t stop there, but we can’t go father than heaven so what can we do?

      • Outer Heaven.

        • raymk

So does that mean were stuck outside the gates?

          • neocatzon

          • Like we’ll let the gates stop us!
Who do you think we are?!

    • We touched the untouchable and broke the unbreakable!

      • TheBlackgirl123

        nice gurren lagann reference

        • Row row fight the power ~(^ 3^ )~ !

  • Elemiel

I keep seeing this, what is this Skullgirls?

    • JustThisOne

It’s an indie fighting game that has a lot of fans. It helps that the devs are friendly, interact with the fans every week during streams of their game, and are honest about where their money goes.

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

Hand-drawn 2D fighting game with a (formerly) all girl cast. This IndieGoGo campaign just completed and will now add its first male character (and potentially more depending on the community voting).

  • Go2hell66

    so much money $_$

  • Isaac Newton

Damn those Dev where so lucky.

there you go problem solve LOL

    • NTaiyokun

      You do realize:
How much those characters cost to make
Their funding was cut thanks to an unrelated lawsuit
Everybody voluntarily donated. They weren’t forcing them.

Unless you’re bad at wording things.

    • JustThisOne

Believe it or not, there’s an actual cost breakdown on the site, that shows where all the money goes.

Also, they seemed to have bend over backwards for rewards, considering how they’ve added extra voice packs which.. wait.. I’m not sure if it was volunteer or if the VAs will still be paid… But the point still remains, they’re offering a ton of extras.

      • Some of the voicepacks were volunteered, I know for sure Mr. Brown’s voicepack was, as far as being paid for the extra voicepacks I’m guessing that would make sense considering that’s work, but I’d have to pick up some more info….or go ask one of the voiceactors.

  • James Reilly

    Yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaa~ BOOOOOOOOOOY

  • It’s too bad that big developers will never follow this excellent example. Capcom’s charging god knows how much for a palette swap while LZ gives out 5 new characters, each with their own story mode, free to the general public.

    • Luna Kazemaru

You basically funded the new characters with the kickstarter how is that free again?

      • Elvick

Because any random person who owns the game already, but hasn’t funded this will get the characters without paying for them.

        Thus, free.

    • doubleO7

Idon’t think they said anything about the characters being free once they actually come out, though I could be wrong.

      • Luna Kazemaru

I heard they where free for a limited time i could be wrong.

        • AkuLord3

yes each character will be for a limited time

          • Luna Kazemaru

            Thank you :D

  • Cool!!!

  • NTaiyokun

  • Zonic505

Seriously, this is absolutely amazing. The fact we’re getting 5 new characters & their story mode (they confirmed they got an extra $40,000, so the 2nd mystery DLC character will have a story mode), new stages, music, and voice packs is just awesome.

  • Simply amazing. We all should be proud of ourselves, especially Lab Zero =^_^=

  • Before I forget I’d like to point out ZONE-sama amassed his minions to help get to those last couple of markers so yeah, that happened. Also tentacle and phallic jokes.

  • Stayed up with the people of gaf waiting to see if they would make it, then chipped in $37 even though I’m not that big a fan of fighting games. So happy about their outrageously massive success.

  • Wenzel

SG Community its the best FGC in America period.

  • Göran Isacson

Ain’t got nothing else to say that this video hasn’t already said more beautifully:

Also yeah, sudden money came out of nowhere and now we have delicous story mode for everyone… soo yeah.

I’ma hope for Isaac and Annie to make it in, personally.

  • Go-go PC version!

  • universalperson

There’s an error on this article. You actually can’t donate on their website. You have to send money via PayPal to an e-mail address.

Next Week’s Article: Skullgirls getting not five, but SIX new characters! Stay tuned!

  • Christopher Nunes

Due to some “non-disclosure” they got an extra $40,000 to use for their game and so the 2nd Mystery Character will get a Story and Stage as well! ^_^

I can’t wait! I’m voting for Marie and Minette!
