Make RPGs On Your PS3 With RPG Maker 3

By Spencer . April 15, 2013 . 1:45am

imageRPG Maker 3 will join the growing list of PS2 Classics this week. As the name suggests, this is software designed to let users create role playing games. New in RPG Maker 3 are 3D graphics and triggers to set up events.

RPG Maker 3 has a bunch of built in heroes, enemies, and tile sets for map making. You can place treasures, traps, and hidden passages when creating dungeons. While RPG Maker 3 is certainly an interesting addition, it’s too bad creators can’t share RPGs they made on PSN.

Also, we’re curious about Agetec. Aside from the occasional DSWare game we haven’t heard much about them…

    Hype: “Down boy.. down..”

  • wouldnt make much sense to create a game and not be able to share it

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

It didn’t make much sense originally, as games were saved to the memory card. That’s all well and good for you and your friends, but if you want to share/download games from the internet, you required a rare and expensive tool that allowed you to hook a memory card up to your PC.

I spent a summer or more with RPG maker on PC. Didn’t know there was a 2, not even a 3.

    • There’s… a lot.

The numbered entries like this sort of refer to the console RPG Makers, and those have been around since at least the SNES, usually courtesy of Enterbrain.

Meanwhile on PC there’s a bunch of versions, with VX and VX Ace being the modern ones, the latter available on Steam. It’s kind of expensive and I’ve not tried Ace yet (I’ll always be an XP or 2K guy, I guess), but my experience with the PS2 one tells me that aside from price those are infinitely better deals to pursue.

RM3 is really slow and clunky to play, never mind create in, but it’s also the only 3D one I know of, so if that’s really important to you, that’s the redeeming quality of this one.

Is it completely impossible to share ?
Can’t we just transfer the save on a usb key for example and then upload it online to share ?

    • Detrimont

actually, that’s quite good thinking, since apparently it saves to the memory card, and you can transfer memory card data onto a flashcard, technically you should be able to transfer it and put it online

      • Really?
Purchase starting to become very justified.

        • Detrimont

well, i think you can, i dont have any ps1 or ps2 classics, but i know you can transfer ps1 saves from ps3 to psp for ffvii(my friend has it), and you can transfer ps3 saves to usb, so you should be able to transfer ps1/2 memory card data from ps3 to usb

  • Agetec backlog!
Help me save some cash with Kuon next or the Echo Night games.

  • Villainous Inc.

The wide availability of the much more advanced PC versions of RPG Maker makes this a really impractical buy in my eyes. You can’t do half as many things with it, and it lacks the backing of the robust community surrounding the later upgrades of the product.

  • Go2hell66

Considering i spent my entire holiday playing Witch’s House, Mad Father and Paranoiac and other such games this is great news

    • How Paranoiac? IIRC its made by the same guy who did The Crooked Man ryte? Non spoiler plot summary?

      • Go2hell66

Well theres not much plot to it really, You basically move into your aunts place to recover from some illness and get chased by this “monster” at night. There’s some pretty disturbing imagery, be ready for A LOT of jump scares and have a lot of clean underwear nearby, yea thats about it…

its very short, i finished it in about 2.5 hours or something

        • Oh dear, can those images be worse than Crooky crooked neck? D:

          • Go2hell66

Actually i havent got around to playing The Crooked Man yet. But its definitely next on my list of games to play

    • Hinataharem

I just played Witch’s house with my friends. It was an awesome game!

    • Luna Kazemaru

      witch’s house…that true ending….

  • Vesperion

Reminds me of that old xplay rewiew for it…… awesome

    • 愛憎

That’s all I ever think of! The story of Bob Muffin! I have been looking for that video for the past 6 years, but can’t find it anywhere :(

    • Haha, wow I totally forgot about that.

    • tyrantflughude

I think the person who was making it computer got hit by lighting. Because not long after they did that one of the people who makes the tutorials for RPG maker posted that there computer was struck by lighting.

  • I hope RPG maker 1 and 2 will get a re-release as well on the PSN.

  • Usually there are games save files to share on Gamefaqs but I don’t see any for 3. There are some for the first one. I’m sure I could find some save files for some folks games and use the usb to get it on the ps3.

  • I’ve been curious to try one of the RPG Maker games for ages, but without the ability to share games the whole thing seems kinda pointless. Hopefully we’ll see a new one with proper sharing features?

    • NimbusStev

I would recommend trying it on PC. The console versions are built more like games (think LBP) where the PC version is a lot more functional as an engine. In other words, the possibilities are endless on PC! You can download millions of custom graphics online or even make your own from scratch. It’s a really neat program and anyone interested in game design should definitely check it out. The newest version, VX Ace, is even available on Steam.

  • Learii

can we see how this game work?

  • fireemblembeast

That guy on the cover looks too much like Ike…

    • And I was reading abt Ike earlier. How did I not notice this?
