The Evil Within Will Be A Pure Survival Horror Game About A Detective

By Spencer . April 19, 2013 . 1:00pm

imageMore details about The Evil Within come from Japan where the game is known as Psychobreak. Shinji Mikami’s studio has been working on a story about Detective Sebastian and his partner.

The two arrive at a gruesome crime scene and out there is a mysterious and powerful force lurking in the shadows. One by one, other police officers are killed right before Sebastian’s eyes. Suddenly, something attacks Sebastian and he’s knocked unconscious. When he comes to he awakens in horrifying world with monsters wandering around. Your goal in The Evil Within is to first survive and second solve the mystery behind this maleficent force.

The Evil Within will be a pure survival horror game. Players will have to survive with limited resources and the world is designed to make players feel tense and anxious. Deadly and devious traps are scattered in the game. These can kill Sebastian, but they’re also useful because you can use traps against enemies. If that’s not unsettling enough, the world actually warps around the player’s actions in real time. The Evil Within changes elements like the background, walls, hallways, doors, and rooms. The last bit kind of reminds me of Eternal Darkness and its trippy sanity meter.

The Evil Within is slated for release in 2014 on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, and unspecified next generation consoles. The game is powered by the id Tech 5 engine.

Sounds like Sebastian took a wrong turn to Silent Hill.

Or better yet, the Twilight Zone.

“The Evil Within will be a purse survival horror game”
A “purse” survival horror ? Is that a new horror genre I’m not aware of ?

Anyway, this game looks like my kinda horror games. I love mysteries and playing as detectives (getting Deadly Premonition this month), so this game is right up my alley. Hopefully the game play doesn’t disappoint, since I’m not a big fan of Bethesda unfortunately. Still I’m definitely keeping an eye for this game.

    • Solomon_Kano

Bethesda isn’t developing this though. The game is developed by Mikami’s own studio, Tango Gameworks. Bethesda will be publishing it as both are owned by ZeniMax, but that’s it.

I think it means you’ll need to buy a lot of DLC to survive.
      DO YOU SURVIVE!? OPEN PURSE!

Now make a crossover with Deadly Premonition and make York as a cameo apperance in this game =)

  • Go2hell66

So… Shinji Mikami’s version of silent hill with traps?

    • JustThisOne

I would love to see what that’s like. Here’s to hoping!

Psychobreak is a way better name than The Evil Within. I hope they change the American name to Psychobreak and just use The Evil Within as a sub-title.

    • ShadowDivz

The Evil Within sounds like a the “block buster horror movie of the year”
You know, the movie where this girl and her friends are baby sitting and they get a scary phone call and then shit ensues.

      • Ali

Or the baby is actually…..possesed, like most garbage out nowadays. Im seeing Evil Dead soon and I am stoked!

        • ShadowDivz

          Tell me how it is.

  • l777l

They should use “purse survival horror” to advertise it.

    A horror game that ISN’T a shooter in 2013?
Right there it’s worth keeping an eye on.

    • AkuLord3

Well it will have guns from screenshots and stuff but more like old horror games than new ones. At least what they’re going do

  • Göran Isacson

Looking real good… now I only wonder if it will PLAY real good too. The screenshots look nice and I like the concept, I just hope it will keep up the use of shadows because those zombies look a bit silly when displayed in full light as they are in those screenshots.

  • Farid Belkacemi

After RE4, I’m with you Shinji… I know you can pull it off ! ;)

  • badmoogle

    Interest rising…

  • Happy Gamer

Looking better and better. Now we just need sliding under monsters and cigarette tossing and we’re set.

  • Brandonmkii

I like gore, but hate feeling scared. Might not be the pick for me :B
