We Might Have To Wait A Little Longer For A Zone Of The Enders Sequel

By Sato . May 2, 2013 . 5:05pm

In the recent HideoBlog web radio show hosted by Konami (via: Game Jouhou), Hideo Kojima talked about Zone of the Enders HD Collection and the reason why we might have to wait a little longer to see a Zone of the Enders sequel.

Kojima started the show by assuming the persona of the humorous Moby Dick Studio CEO, Joakim N. Mogren, with the bandaged mask. However, his humorous tone quickly changed to a more stern voice once he began to talk about Zone of the Enders HD Collection. After reading plenty of feedback, especially from fans of the PlayStation 2 versions of the game, it has come to his attention that his recent HD Remaster didn’t live up to the expectation of the franchise’s loyal fans, to whom he offers his deepest apologies.

Zone of the Enders HD Collection’s transition from 30 FPS to 60 was not as smooth as Kojima had hoped for. While it wasn’t as noticeable to first-time players, those who enjoyed the original seamless fast-paced games were able to feel the choppiness. (For a comparison, check out Spencer’s playtest.) Kojima believes that such action-heavy games deserve nothing but the smoothest gameplay to fully enjoy. Due to this problem, Kojima and his team have re-programmed the entire game, and will release a free PlayStation 3 patch that should fix the problem and greatly enhance its performance. There won’t be a patch for the Xbox 360 version for the time being.

Not only has this incident prompted Kojima to work on a patch to fix the problem, but it has also put a halt to the Enders’s Project which was announced last year as a Zone of the Enders sequel. The entire team behind the project has been dismantled, as Kojima would like to re-evaluate the franchise before moving forward, he says. Furthermore, he also wants to re-evaluate fans by asking once more, whether they would still like to see a Zone of the Enders sequel.

The release date of the upcoming patch for the PlayStation 3 version of Zone of the Enders HD Collections has not been announced yet.

Where the hell is the Z.O.E. HD Collection for the Vita? That was supposed to come out in November. ((Perhaps it was delayed for the patch?))

    • Solomon_Kano

I’m pretty sure that’s cancelled. There’s no Transfarring logo on the PS3 box, it’s not on Konami’s website, and they never even bring it up.

    • Jordan Coleman

Yeah I hope that’s why it was delayed.

      I sadly doubt it though.

    • Neophoton

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s cancelled at this point.

    • TheExile285

      Yeah its vaporware :(

I guess I’ll be forced to buy it on PS3 now :/

  • Luis Camargo

PS3, PS4, PSV. I do not care. Just do it ZoE3 or give it to Platinum

  • Brion Valkerion

Cool to see they are still planning on fixing a game that came out awhile ago. Shows dedication to the fans/franchise for sure. Hopefully that sequel does not take too long though!

    • You know, our headline is a polite way of saying the sequel is cancelled.

      • Solomon_Kano

      • Brion Valkerion

Then why quote him saying would like to re-evaluate the franchise before moving forward. I did not say the sequel was coming out in 2 months lol, merely pointing out that he clearly has not given up on this franchise.

        • Solomon_Kano

A game going into “reevaluation” and production being halted usually means it’s been cancelled. Metal Gear Solid Rising was “reevaluated” and got killed behind the scenes before Kojima had the idea to give it to Platinum.

He also said he wants to reevaluate whether or not fans still want more ZOE. Meaning, likely, that the HD collection sold below expectations and it appears that there isn’t significant demand for a sequel.

          • I’m hoping this patch “reevaluates” the 30 frames per second and is released soon, if that’s step one then.

  • AzureRyuujin

Why of course I want a ZOE3. Don’t worry about that. Also, glad to hear about the patch.

  • $24431191

I’d like to see ZoE3. I’ve beaten the first game but I still need to play the second one.

    • Solomon_Kano

If you enjoyed 1, you’ll love 2. Vast improvement over the first.

  • Sakurazaki

SO BAD! I need my new ZOE fix…

  • Maybe if he included Japanese audio, the dubbing was disgusting

  • evilmoogle

    I want a sequel… Do i have to beg?
    Well here it goes;
come on man, got all this money man..please man…. i..i’ll suck anubis cockpit man.

  • Solomon_Kano

Dismantled. Damn lol. Well, that’s quite alright if it’s for the sake of making ZOE3 as good as possible

  • Ikki

“There won’t be a patch for the Xbox 360 version for the time being”

    No-buy then.

    • AkuLord3

The 360 version framerate isn’t as bad as the Ps3 one so its no big deal and it says “FOR THE TIME BEING” not never going happen

    • TrevHead

Yeah if you are fine with 30FPS gaming the 360 version’s FPS rate only drastically dips in a few places.

  • TrevHead

While the 360 HD version is much better than the PS3 one I do hope that gets a patch too.

Oh and it’s a shame we won’t get to see ZOE 3, it would make a nice change of pace to FPS and Hack and Slash.

  • Chow

    Oh, mama no!
    *punches hole in wall*

On a side note, while a ZOE3 would be great, it’s strange have a sequel that follows a definitively concluded two-parter storyline. Not to mention the big gap in release dates and generation. I mean, it could work, just with a subtitle and without a number stamped next to it.

    • LynxAmali

Actually, there’s a lot of potential for a sequel/prequel. Note how they really don’t explain what Metatron aside from an energy source/ material and leaves it up to other things for the player to interpret (see Radium’s accident in the Idolo OVA and how Nohman acts come 2nd Runner, completely opposite from his stern personality in the first game.)

      • Chow

Good point. I always just looked at it from a character-relationship point of view, and how the two stories built toward a certain confrontation that seemed utterly hopeless early on.

  • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Wasn’t there also a 3DS game in the works or something? That’s what the Wikipedia page says at least.

  • Neophoton

So I take it that it’s best not to expect a ZOE3 any time soon. At least they’re working on a patch for the HD collection, though I’d hope they’re extending that patch out overseas.

    • Solomon_Kano

We got MGS4’s trophy patch, so I’m expecting we’ll see this.

  • Yes I want a ZOE 3, don’t do this to me Kojima.

  • Sperium3000

“Furthermore, he also wants to re-evaluate fans by asking once more, whether they would still like to see a Zone of the Enders sequel.”

    YES. All the YES.

  • Martian Wong

Thank you Kojima-San. He is the man, he actually listen to what the fans want and actualize it. He deserves everyone’s respect. And yes, I do want ZOE 3!!

  • I used to want a Zone of the Enders 3. Until I finally played the HD collection. I am really not a fan of the game. I am surprised at how bad I thought the story telling and button mashing gameplay was. However, I know a lot of folks want a sequel. I don’t but I still might give it a try. I think I’d rather a new metal gear with david hayter.

  • kaizin

yay a patch for it i love the hd remaster and glad they are giving us a free patch to fix it. Also cant wait to see news on the sequel when they start on it >.<

  • Andrew A

What a bro. I’ve had my limited Edition collecting dust after I heard of its issues. Glad that its finally getting patched and by Kojima no less!

  • z_merquise

The entire team behind the project has been dismantled, as Kojima would like to re-evaluate the franchise before moving forward

I wonder what made them disband the team and stop the production. Is it because they aren’t confident of the series? As much as I like Metal Gear series, I really don’t want KojiPro to develop nothing but Metal Gear games.

So yes, I want to see a Zone of the Enders sequel. Please KojiPro.

As for the ZOE HD, I’m glad that they took action and fix the framerate issue. It’s not really a big deal for me but fixing it would make it better. And that may also help the sales, if that still count.

    • Solomon_Kano

I think it’s more that Kojima wasn’t confident in how the game was coming along. He did as much with Rising when that wasn’t shaping up.

    • Sakurazaki

I’m guessing they looked at the sales numbers for the HD remake. Maybe they weren’t very high… Which I could totally see happening.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Sounds a bit similar to the problems KojiPro had with Solid Rising before asking Platinum to make Revengeance.

    • z_merquise

Zone of the Enders game by Platinum sounds cool, but I would really like the KojiPro staff to prove themselves this time and show that they can make an awesome, big-budgeted game without Hideo Kojima in the director’s role.

      • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

They already tried to make history with Portable Ops. Too bad that even Kojima treats it as the black sheep considering he never mentioned it again.

      • brian

That seems ripe for possibly being a failure as a game and then it sells too low, and this series is canned entirely.

    • Solomon_Kano

I’d love this to be taken over by Platinum. I’ve said as much in the past, but now that their collaboration on Rising was successful…

      • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Third reply about that? But I never suggested Platinum should work in ZOE. I’m trying to say KojiPro has problems when dealing with fast games.

        • Solomon_Kano

I wasn’t saying you did. Since you brought up Platinum I was saying that was something I, personally, would like to see.

  • Aristides

Well he better release the patched version for Vita! Seriously we’ve been waiting forever to get the game X_X.

    • TheExile285

Its vapoware. Its sucks but if the game barely runs on PS3 correctly, think about how much of a mess it would be on Vita

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

The entire team behind the project has been dismantled, as Kojima would like to re-evaluate the franchise before moving forward, he says.

Logical, but it’s been years since the last game, so…

Furthermore, he also wants to re-evaluate fans by asking once more, whether they would still like to see a Zone of the Enders sequel.

    What? Does not compute!

We’ve been asking for a sequel for years now!! Get to it!!! D=<

  • On the one hand, the patch is good news – I just got the ZoE collection on sale for crazy cheap last weekend, and I can wait a little longer to play it if I’m getting a better game. The talk about the sequel is bad, though – is this the same “ZOE 3DS” game that Kojima teased last year? I was looking forward to that!

    • Solomon_Kano

It’s definitely not. There was never any real talk about there being a 3DS game in development. Enders Project would’ve been for consoles, as it was running on FOX.

      • What was up with that tease, then??

        • Solomon_Kano

Surely you haven’t forgotten that Kojima is a God-tier troll? It was a picture that caused some speculation and was never brought up again.

          • Posting an obvious tease for a game that he’s not even planning to make isn’t nearly clever enough for Kojima.

          • Solomon_Kano

So the trolling will come when someone asks what happened to ZOE 3DS and he tells us 3DS was merely the reflection of ZOE all along and he was teasing ZOE: EOZ lol.

          • That’s my point, though. That wouldn’t be clever enough for Kojima. It’d just be a crude red herring that would only serve to embitter fans.

          • Solomon_Kano

So that gets a downvote, folks? It’s a joke. A speculative joke.

Besides, fans have nothing to expect based on that one image that was never referenced again. Especially since that non-tease came even before Enders Project. If anything had been in the works, it likely was killed by or folded into Enders Project.

          • The downvote was an accident, because it’s unreasonably difficult to hit the “reply” button when you’re doing this on an iPhone. Chill.

          • Solomon_Kano

I’m cool. People around here like to downvote for no reason though. I wasn’t accusing you, but there’s always somebody sitting around to downvote. I’m using a phone myself, so I get the difficulty there lol.

  • unknowncast

Pretty sure you don’t need a survey to indicate we want something else then Metal Gear from Kojima Productions.

  • ZekeFreek

wasn’t there going to be a vita version at some point?

    • Solomon_Kano

Yea, though there hasn’t been any reference to it since its announcement. The PS3 version didn’t even have the Transfarring logo and it’s not on their site, so I take that to mean it was quietly cancelled.

      • ZekeFreek

pfft. I hate when shit is silently cancelled.

        • Solomon_Kano

Seriously. At least just come out and tell us it isn’t happening so we can stop expecting it. I was seriously waiting for some ZOE on the go.

  • Donpablo

You know, I’ve gotten quite tired of having games touted over me like a carrot dangling from a string to have it just pulled away citing some silly reason why they can’t let me have said carrot.

If fans buy X amount or If X amount of fans vote we’ll let you have this tasty treat.

I just want my damn carrot.

  • Armane

I’ll believe this patch when I see it. But I’ll rush out and get the HD Collection when it does get released.

Not even surprised Enders Project got cancelled.

  • TiamatNM

    “re-evaluate” my ass

  • Wow, dismantling the whole team? What a disaster. Asking fans if they still want a sequel is a stupid question. Of course we do. No patch for 360 is BS. The HD collection itself may not be as terrible as the Silent Hill collection but at least those re-releases didn’t directly influence the future of the franchise. Hope they get this all sorted out and release ZOE 3 eventually.

    • Seizui

Small note regarding the 360 patch: It may be because of Microsoft’s policy regarding patches(requiring them to pay Microsoft a large sum of money as well as having documented ## many users playing the game).

      • That only recently came to light though because of Fez though. Nobody every questioned if a patch was gonna be released for both platforms a couple of years ago….I think.

      • TrevHead

The PS3 and Wii also charge for patching, dunno about the WiiU, however the 360 has the added BS of limiting the file size of patches which is what delayed the 360 Skullgirls patch.

    • revenent hell

I think the only reason he’s asking the fans if they still want a sequel is because they are trying to gauge whether it would be worth the money to create the game. If there aren’t a lot of people showing interest in it I doubt highly they would want to put resources in to something that wont pay off.
Of course any fan of any game wants another one but if there isn’t going to be a profit from it its not going to happen

      • Earthbound fans and Chrono fans are as vocal as any other fanbase for a sequel and that hasn’t made Nintendo or S-E rush out to make a new game. I don’t know how they’d measure whether enough fans on the internet is enough to warrant a sequel.

        • revenent hell

Just because fans make an outcry doesn’t mean it will be listened to or even cared about.

But here he is outright asking if fans still care enough about the game to want another one which leads me to believe his faith in the game selling well is not terribly high or at a minimum he doesn’t think to many people are currently interested in another one.

It doesn’t help that he dismantled the team already which to me gives the feeling if a sequel does come out, its going to be vastly different than whatever their current working ideas where.

Even though internet numbers shouldn’t really be taken for accurate accounting its still a good way to determine how much a product is in demand for.

  • brian

I was just wondering if a patch for it would ever be released, about time.

  • Thank goodness! Finally some news about the franchise. I will wait as long as needed as long as we get a sequel sometime in the near future =^_^=

  • evilmajikman

At this point they should just make ZOE3 for PS4.

    • Solomon_Kano

That was likely where Enders Project was heading, given that it was for FOX but wouldn’t have been ready until after MGSV (which is already straddling the current-gen to next-gen release window).

  • gamerdude

ZOE 2nd runner was so much better than the first one that I’m no sure if it was wise to bundle them.

ZOE2 is a great game and I would definitely want to see a spiritual successor as the story itself left me completely satisfied without any loose ends.

  • Covnam

“Due to this problem, Kojima and his team have re-programmed the entire game, and will release a free PlayStation 3 patch that should fix the problem and greatly enhance its performance.”

That’s awesome news. When I read the headline that it wasn’t up to what Kojima wanted my first thought was that he should address it. Nice to see him holding himself up. Though it really should have been addressed pre-release….

Hopefully they’ll get to the 360 version too, I’ve got the ps3 version, but wouldn’t like to see them left behind.

And yes, I’m still hoping for another sequel as well.

  • Kaihedgie

    Ow >:

  • Is HD collection still coming for the vita?

  • Anonymous

I never played ZoE, But i wanted to play the HD Collection, But wow, Reprogramming the entire game? I didn’t know someone would do that for his fans

  • WhyWai

i believe the actual main reason for the pull back is Metal Gear Solid 5.

  • puchinri

That sounds quite reasonable. I hope he gets things figured out and feels good about everything as far as the sequel goes; nice that he cares so much about the fans too.

  • Tom

I like this direct communication from Kojima. Every major company should have at least on guy like him.

  • Fango

  • Леонид Родин

    What about vita verson?

  • MrSirFeatherFang

I bought the collection at launch and I haven’ payed it yet because I was waiting for another patch. Glad to see KojiPro taking it into their own hands… although I though the next ZoE project was hinted to be on the 3DS?

    • Solomon_Kano

That was a one-off thing, an image with no further explanation. Enders Project, which is referred to here, was to be for consoles as it was running on FOX.

  • Michaelius

I’m still waiting for my vita version :(

  • Kamille

“on hold” is just another way to say “canceled”.

  • Göran Isacson

One wonders why both the ZoE collection and the Silent Hill collection got such hohum work done on them, whereas Konami seems to put so much more effort into ensuring that the Metal Gear collections are topnotch. I mean yes, of course, Metal Gear IS the big Konami claim to fame and breadwinner so of course they’re going to ensure that it’s good, but the sheer level of difference in effort put into those other collections almost makes one think they WANT them to fail.

Or at least just throw them out like “GUH FINE TAKE THIS SHODDY COLLECTION YOU BABIES just leave us alone and buy other stuff now GOD”. If it’s a sign that Konami upper management doesn’t WANT the collections to be good… or if they honestly didn’t wether the collections were considered good or not.

  • Mister_Nep

Wasn’t there already a patch out? I distinctly remember having to download a patch shortly after release. What else is there that needs to be patched?

  • Anime10121

    Don’t say that! Don’t say that :(

  • venomz09

lame….now we just might never see another zoe.

seriously wtf….either he is afraid of dissapointing the fans or not too confident he can satisify all of them ect.

with this mentality we will possibly never see another game in the series.

he didn’t seem to be this worried about “fans” when he was making the first 2 games….so now wtf is the problem ?

get some damn confidence mr kojima an make a zoe game as you an the zoe team see fit, i can assure u it would be more than good enough for most of us true zoe fans.

he needs to stop catering to every damn thing the “fans” want, cuz it’s screwing things up in the long run for those us that just want another game to play before the end of fucking time.

    • MogCakes

He doesn’t have the final say in the project, the suits do. He’s just the spokesman since ZoE is his creation and the suits aren’t willing to show their faces.

  • glenngunnerzero

Honestly one of the reasons I didn’t get the HD collection was because of the Framerate drop, so I’ll probably get it once the patch comes out, but I’m almost sadden by the cancellation/massive delay or consideration for a new ZoE.

  • 60hz

Soooo… ZOE3 is cancelled because we didn’t flock to pick up an ill-programmed rehash that ALL OF US ALREADY OWN… wow.
