Rockstar’s Controversial Manhunt Joins PlayStation 2 Classics Next Week

Manhunt, the game where you play as a death row inmate fighting for survival after his supposed execution, is headed to PlayStation Network next week. The game will be available on May 14th (15th for Europe) for $9.99 / €9.99 / £7.99

In Manhunt, you play as James Earl Cash, an inmate that wakes up after his “execution” by lethal injection and finds himself being forced to participate in a series of snuff films.

Manhunt caused a fair bit of controversy upon release due its graphic depictions of killing. Its sequel, Manthunt 2, went a step further, and was given the AO (adults-only) rating. As a result, Rockstar edited certain portions of the game, following which the ESRB re-rated the game M (Mature) on consoles.

I only have this to say:

    Media Tabloids, BRING IT.

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

I’d rather have an HD release (With move support).

  • DCBlackbird

huh…… I think this game was a one time thing for me…. that fight(spoiler free) in the deliverance mission…. really got to me… >_<

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

I think it’s one of the most tense levels ever made.

  • I remember reading about this when the controversy over Manhunt 2 was still making headlines. I’ve seen some people defend Manhunt 1 as a work of satire (in the same way I’ve seen people defend movies like Hostel and Funny Games), but it always just sounded more sensationalistic and sick to me, which I guess is sort of Rockstar’s MO. And by the way, snuff films don’t actually exist!

    • DCBlackbird

I hope not….. that vid on the internet with the woman and the cartel was just….. tearing….

It’s not really satirical, it’s just a bleak game based around some very ugly stuff. That’s not to say it isn’t good though since it actually haves some meaty gameplay based around the utterly insane concept and I’d place it along with MGS, Mark Of The Ninja and Thief as one of the best stealth games ever made and the atmosphere is utterly terrifying (You can even plug in a headset and you can even attract enemies if you speak or make a loud noise while you listen to Starkweather’s crazy banter).

As for the last comment on your post… those don’t exist but there are faux “snuff” films which in the end play a lot like horrifying found footage films (Like August Underground).

    I want the AO one!!

    Lol, sound like a teenager

    • dragoon_slayer12

That was 2. Don’t know how 2 would get AO, I thought 1 was more gruesome (distorting the color really didn’t alter the graphic killing)

      • Scipio

Yeah, 2 was heavily censored. 1 is much better in my opinion.

        • Juan Andrés Valencia

Even without censorship Manhunt 2 is an absolute letdown. It tries to be shocking and make it more shocking than the original but it fails hard since the entire thing is just ridiculous (You get out of the mental asylum to later arrive to your old house, then to an S&M club/Hostel Part IV set, an apartment building/porn theater, etc. because fuck logic), it lacks the original’s concept, difficulty level, amazing soundtrack, voice acting (Brian Cox was absolutely terrifying) and even the plot was worse. It’s not a terrible game but it’s far from a great one.

Definitely getting this. A Fucking classic in every sense

First Bully then the first 2 Fatal Frame games and now this? PS2 Classics is getting a very good list of games. I like that. Keep it up!

Add PS2 Category on Vita PSN!

I never was very interested in this, but I may yet check it out.
