By Ishaan . May 9, 2013 . 8:30am

Square Enix have shared the first screenshots of Final Fantasy X-2 HD from the upcoming Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, slated for release this year. Take a look at Yuna, Rikku and Paine in their HD versions below.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will include both games on the PlayStation 3. On the Vita, you’ll need to purchase the two games separately.

  • Nameless App 1989

International and Last Mission or bust!

    • PersonaSpace

According to Best Buy Cananda it’s both!

    • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

The international version is titled “Final Fantasy X-2 International+Last Mission.” Yes, it was when Square started running out of ideas.

    • KingGunblader

They’ve already confirmed that this release is based on the International version. Trust me, that’s a must for me too. :P

  • Anime10121

YES! The Final Fantasy with my favorite gameplay of the entire series returns with a facelift :P

Cant wait for this, while FFX undoubtedly has a better story, I enjoyed playing X-2 MUCH more!

Just viewed the screens and I’d say everything looks great except for
Rikku! Why the hell does Rikku look so derpy:( My favorite character
design of the game gets the worst facial makeover :(

Regardless cant wait to traverse Spira once more with new fangled graphics and extra content from the international versions!

    • Glad someone else thinks that apart from crappy story FF10-2 had a really great gameplay :)

I really liked that battle system, it was a blast, and I can’t wait to try it out yet again.

    • Bobby Jennings

I second this! I loved FFX-2 and I never got a chance to beat it, so I’m looking forward to this one the most!

  • Altumn

Hahaha! Now I want this game!

  • dragoon_slayer12

The only time I played this I pulled an all nighter and beat it in one sitting, this time, I’ll take my time.

  • Chiupon

Nomura’s artwork style is really apparent in these models, too. It’s kind of neat. I’m really excited :D

also is it just me or does Rikku look like an olsen twin?

  • XYZ_JolteonZ980

What happened to Tidus and such and the other good members of the cast. This will be a pain to play (I guess it adds to the story?). Anyway will be my first time playing an FF numbered game under 12.

    • Play and you will find out what has happened.

    • Neppygear

Tidus isn’t really… *present* in X-2. And imo, X-2 is far superior to X.

      • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

Not really. I mean all those sidequests.

        • The gameplay itself is magnificent. Everything else is varying degrees of tolerable. At least most of the sidequests were better than the main quest. There were a couple of lousy ones, of course.

        • Neppygear

At least it actually has sidequests…

          • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

And what FF doesn’t have sidequests? Never played FF13 so I don’t know.

    • Guest

      did you even finish 10!?

      • XYZ_JolteonZ980

This will be my first time playing it.

    • Detrimont

How do you know they are/were good members of the cast if you havent play it

  • Richard N

Oh this game. I remember this game fondly during my puberty days. Thanks for teaching me what it is to be a man Rikku….

  • I wasn’t going to get this at first to be honest, but with X-2 being bundled with it and considering all the effort they went through to update it, it would definitely be worth another purchase.

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Wow it looks friggin great. Better than the X remaster.

  • revenent hell

Oh thank the gods they didn’t mutilate them like they did Tidus!
But they forgot to give Rikku the “Al bhed” eyes……that makes me kinda sad

    • mingledorff

She has the Al Bhed Eyes. If you look at a BIG version of the pic of her face you can see them. They are trippy as hell.

      • revenent hell

Hmmm thanks for pointing that out. I didn’t bother to click on it. My oopsie :D

  • First I just want the normal X… I’ll decide later if I’ll get the X-2 or not. I don’t feel like another trip to the YRP land.

  • KingGunblader

HURRY. I know I’m talking to Squeenix Japan here but HURRY.

  • Kevin Schwarz

One of the worst FF games IMO.

    • Arizato

      I agree.

    • It was pretty bad in my opinion but dear lord that battle system was glorious.

      • Akuosa

This. The plot and characters were way too much for me, but that battle system, so fun.

    • revenent hell

X had a good story, I think, and its battle system I enjoyed altogether I really enjoyed the game.
I also liked X2 even though I didn’t think it was necessary as a game. It was fun and I liked the dresphere thing, it was just a cutesy, poppy game but it really wasn’t needed. I know they wanted to give Yuna “a better ending” but to get it you had to do so much so it wasn’t really worth it…..The story line just served no purpose to X to me.
But like I said I did enjoy both games.

    • JMaster3000

Lol, it can’t be worse than FF XIII xD

      • LynxAmali

        XIII had a great story.
XIII-2, however, I will give you. Honestly, it didn’t really need to happen.

        • Detrimont

          i agree with you fully
the story of XIII was great, the battle system however
(which imo got worse in the sequel)
(and according to people on this article, XIII seems like the exact opposite of X-2)

      • Chiupon

The story isn’t even inherently bad, it’s just like… Kind of lacking. It’s a definite contrast to FFX and I just think of it as a “bonus”. It’s really just like post-game closure, like an anime OVA or something. It shows you where the characters are, who they became, and what happened to the world; If you didn’t like Spira or the characters, it’s not for you. FF13 had a wonderful story, it just wasn’t a wonderful game. Luckily, FFX-2 is a wonderful game. It’s seriously enjoyable. Like if you can get past awkward story moments, there are like, a lot of minigames and enjoyable scenes. It doesn’t punish you for playing it.

    • Kenny Loh

      FFXII is the worst

    • Kelohmello

Awful story for sure. Almost everything else about it however blew FFX out of the water in my opinion. It was definitely less linear for one, and that battle system, good grief, it was the best one of the entire Final Fantasy series.

    • 7th

I agree. 1,3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 were all better games than X. I still liked Blitzball though, and I remember playing it for hours on end.

    • Kevin Schwarz

The battle system was good, only because it was almost a copy-paste of FF5. But other than that, the game, again in my opinion was horrible.

So I would rather like S-E actually work on something new and fresh, instead of all those remakes. One of the reasons why, I think Japanese companies are boring these days. But hey, that’s just my opinion.

  • DesmaX

Always wanted to try this one

  • Rikku and Paine look fine, but Yuna looks kind of like a plastic doll because of her hair. I wonder if they can’t fix that through some clever shader use.

    • Anime10121

I feel the opposite everyone looks fine to me except for Rikku, her face looks all derp-tastic now :(

  • My word, upgrading to HD does wonders for things lol. I for one am looking forward to this as I enjoyed the game, but never finished it. Will definitely finish it now, even though I’m going to dread starting over. I had like everything in the game “Sniff Sniff”.

  • eilegz

not bad, but too upscaled anyway im looking for the whole package with all the dlc at a single good price

    • Steven Higgins

I doubt they’ll bother making DLC for a remaster of an older game.

  • puchinri

Oh, my~. It looks very pretty. I’m kind of excited to play it. When it was first released, I scorned it, but now, I feel a bit different and I want to give every FF title a chance.

Plus, it’s magical girl FF. I could ask for better, but this is a nice start.

  • Sergio Briceño

I thought these were the final Rikku HD 3D models.

    • Z3

      Jessica Nigiri <3

    • RichyGaming

Is that girl in the first picture Jessica Nigri?

      • Sergio Briceño

Yes. As far as I know it’s her first public appearance at age 18. The second girl, I don’t really know who she is, but it’s still a pretty hot Rikku.

        • Guest

          Yeah haha

    • Wait what

      no thanks

    • TheExile285

    • Look at Wakka’s final model polish + Blitz Off remastered song.

  • Vesperion

What can i do for you

  • HerosLight

    These screenshots are gorgeous.

  • Zonic505

For a comparison, here’s the same screenshot of the first pic from the PS2 version:

You can also see both pics for a better comparison here on Neogaf:

    • Anime10121

Is it just me or do the facial expressions look less “alive” in the HD version. I mean everything else looks better in the HDR, but the faces lack the emotion seen in the PS2 originals :(

      • saxophone15

I think the lower graphic detail of the original just made the mind interpret more than what was actually there.

      • They look the same lol the models are just mother if anything their faces look less emotional in the ps2 version because of all the conflicting polygons

      • PS3 and Vita lack the Emotion Engine lol

      • Sakurazaki

I thought the same thing and mentioned this somewhere else:

“… the PS2/PCSX2 shots look a lot more animated and CG-ish (i.e. SquEnix movie mode). Same thing with KH1/2 in and out of certain scenes. One scene in-game they’d look really good and the next pretty damn horrible, but during the better animated scenes they had pretty well done facial expressions. The newer models look pretty well “blended” with everything else… and I have a dumb hunch that they could lose that facial flare because the models don’t look separated from the environment. That’s what I meant by a “downgrade”. Though, I’m having second thoughts. I’ll just have to wait and see.”

    • Indeed a vast improvement. Way more impressive than for FFX.

  • Tom

Will they do remakes of other FF games? Like XII? Maybe VIII? Nah, I don’t think they’ll ever touch PS1 games again sadly :(

    • Kenny Loh

FFXII suck and it don’t need a remake, but i would like to see a VIII remake :)

      • 7th

I’d like to see VII(7) and IX(9) remade/remastered, since those were my favorites. I wasn’t a big fan of VIII(8), but why not? 7, 8, and 9 had a lot more conceptually going on than the newer FF games that are out and about, and Tactics was amazing too.

      • “it doesn’t need a remake”

Heh. Why? Because YOU didn’t like it?

In the grand scheme of things, a single person’s opinion matter little. Lots of people liked that game. Many would buy an HD remaster version of it (myself included). Maybe it doesn’t NEED a remaster (not remake – there’s a big difference), but neither do X or X-2 for that matter, yet they’re coming out soon for those who wish to play them. It’s all about options.

Also, PS1 games would need extensive facelifting to look good in HD, whereas PS2 games already look good enough with a simple boost in resolution. So yeah, FF VIII HD is NOT going to happen.

      • As much as I love VIII and I agree on an eventual remake Im definetely looking foward for a XII remaster/remake as well.

    • Kelohmello

These aren’t remakes, they’re remasters. They upgrade the resolution on things, not recreate the game from scratch.

    • TheExile285

I’d like a HD remake of FFXII

  • Romangelo

  • Sardorim

Rikku alone will make buying the HD version all the well worth it.

  • zindkeeper

I really don’t see the difference.

    • DCBlackbird

I think looking up comparison screenshots would let you see

      • zindkeeper

Well sure, they look smoother but what’s the big deal really?

        • DCBlackbird

          0_0 ….. I-I-I D-d-don’t know….

  • fireemblembeast

Yay, more screenshots! I can’t wait for these games :3

  • Rhiwion

Hope that the strategy guides are still valid. :D
I have both of them still flying around. :D

  • tzui20

    that looks amazing…!

  • PuddlesPuddles

I’m worried about the Vita versions. Many graphics-heavy Vita games like Gravity Rush and Uncharted run at a sub-native resolution of 720×408. If, as I suspect, these FF “remasters” also run at that resolution, it will be a barely-noticeable difference from the PS2’s 640×480. In fact, there would be even less total pixels in the Vita versions than the original PS2 versions, so at least in terms of resolution, they would be a graphical downgrade.

    • 7th

I never bought the Vita for these reasons. Just stuck with my FAT PS3, surprisingly, it hasn’t burnt out yet. I guess I just take good care of my stuff.

    • TheExile285

The very first fottage of the HD remaster is from the Vita version and it looks fine. There is a Siliconera article about it tagged under FF HD

  • cloudcaelum

    Looks like amazing.

But please be Vita version native res with 4X AA like Dynasty Warriors!

  • Tom_Phoenix

Man, it sure took them long enough to rerelease Charlie’s Angels on Blu-Ray.

    • Kelohmello

10/10 would read 500 more times

  • Kelohmello

So something I was wondering for a while now: are they going to redo the soundtrack the way Kingdom Hearts HD did? Because I would love that to no end. Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu, and Junya Nakano did a great job on FFX’s music, Hamauzu being one of my favorite composers of all time. And FFX-2 had Noriko Matsueda Takahito Eguchi, who made that another phenomenal soundtrack. I’m pretty sure a few of them don’t work for square anymore, but I would love to see them come back and work on an updated OST. That would be a dream come true for a VGM buff like me.

  • Linhua

    … oh damn… it looks really good… looks like i’m totally out of 40 bucks… no getting around this one… = … I know, Wallet I know… and i’m sorry.

  • Dietrich

Pretty. That is all I can say

  • 7th

Not buying this HD remaster unless it supports stereoscopic 3D. There’s no reason for it not to if they’ve worked this hard already to make the new HD makeover work for the two games. Yoshinori Kitase and Hideki Imaizumi should go all the way on this project for the console version of this release. If a remastered God of War Origins Collection can have 3D, then surely a Final Fantasy X remaster can have it too. The people who paid for the PS3’s full potential still expect it. It’s the only thing that keeps me from completely switching to PC gaming. Along with the 16:9 support, hopefully those of us who bought into the full 3D experience will be satisfied.

  • 7th

Is Square-Enix going to have Stereoscopic 3D support for PS3 versions of Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster? I sure hope so if Santa Monica Studios can integrate it for their HD remastered collection of God of War Origins. Enix and Square have been around nearly 20 years longer than Santa Monica Studios.

  • Paine and Rikku in HD? Sign me up

  • harmonyworld

Wow! It actually looks really good!

  • Dagobert

I wish they could undo Final Fantasy X-2. It ruined FFX’s great ending.

    • komiko12

I thought it provided an explanation on FFX’s ending??

      • Dagobert

It had multiple endings, so no real explanation there. The fact that you were playing as pop stars just ruined it. I mean come on, one game Yuna is a summoner and in the next she’s on stage singing and dancing? Kind of doesn’t make sense. I was fine with the way FFX ended. Kind of makes you wonder if it’s a happy ending or a sad ending; it was great. FFX-2 is like FFXIII-2 and FFXIII Lightning Returns, just milking something that sold a lot. It’s like if Hideo Kojima makes MGS6 a sequel to MGS4 where Snake turns young again and everything is fine and dandy, it kind of kills it.

  • Is the price for the Vita version still a mistery?

  • Prinny Dood

Does anybody know when these will release

  • TheExile285

    I want a release date….

  • Masengan

Hopefully they fixed Leblanc’s face cause it was fugly.

  • NANAandLIZZYfanatic

Is it weird that the two games I’m most excited about are this FFX/X-2 bundle and KH1.5?
Well if it is, I DON’T FREAKIN CARE!!!

    • Ricardo C

      you are not alone

  • Final Fantasy I HD remake next please

  • Nitraion

FF series with battle system i love…. but worse story lol
    what a dilema…. Well FFX-2 has monster taming if i remember……
so jobchange+monster taming is good thats why i love the battle system if only there is auron in this game lol

  • Vash bane

will the graphics stay that way in-game too?

  • elcido6

I’d like to see X-2 remade in HD… said no one, ever.
