Sony Cloud Service For Streaming PS3 Games On PS4 Arriving In 2014

By Ishaan . June 10, 2013 . 8:07pm

Sony and Gaikai’s cloud service will be available in 2014 in the United States. The cloud service will allow PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and eventually PS Vita to stream PlayStation 3 games.

We’ll have more to report as Sony share details.

Will PS3 owners: 1) have to re-buy games; and 2) be able to transfer save data? These two factors will be hugely influential on if and when I buy a PS4.

    • Pedro Cavalcante

What Sony was saying, is that they want to use the cloud to avoid the emulation problem. So i would say “It’s not backwards compatible, but it will be”

    • myausicz

      1) probably yes if it’s blu-ray disc.
      2) dunno

    • artemisthemp

I hear rumors about PS3 still working after PS4, but keep in mind this is just a rumor.

      • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

You’re a real comedian. Consider that I may want to upgrade to a next-gen console without having to lug around a bulky old one just to keep from losing all the games and progress I’ve spent the last five years accumulating?

        • artemisthemp

          I am aware of that.
However I would think Genkai will be able to access your Cloud save

          • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Are cloud-saves only available via PS Plus? Because I don’t have that and am not interested in it.

          • artemisthemp

            PS+ exclusive.
You can get a free voucher from PS Home for doing quest

          • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

So basically, there is no non-BS way to do this.

          • artemisthemp

You can copy Save games, that ain’t protect to a EXT HDD, but else no.

  • DesmaX

Well, that’s a smart way to fix that. I want to hear more

    • Testsubject909

They stated that back in February though. During the original reveal.

      • DesmaX

I though they just talked about streaming games, not confirming retro-compartibility through it

  • Keima88

The one big question left is this :

    Is it region locked?

Not that it matters much but its a nice bonus for the people like me who import lots of games from the states and Japan.

  • ChiffonCake

    Well, I guess I won’t have to buy a PS3 anymore now.

    • Chk991

I kind of doubt this is going to be worth anything. To begin with “streaming games” sounds kind of suspicious to me. Also, unless you can get all the games you had on your PS account then it ain’t worth it since I have a lot of PS+ games there. I’ll wait a while for more details and then buy a PS3.

  • Mimi

it better have ni no kuni or else my decision to get the 3 or 4 wil be terribly hard.

    • RovCal

wow this is the exact same reason why i aint sure

i have to buy 3ds for bravely default

and ps3 for ni no kuni

      and now ps4 for KH3 and FF15

and i cant afford all so i wanna skip ps3.. lets hope are wish is granted

      • Baxter Stompy

Simple, wait for the PS4 to have a price drop after a year and hopefully you have enough cash or birthday gift to get a PS4

      • Tg

For the 3DS, there’s also Dream Drop Distance. :) However, I hope we can play Ni no Kuni on the PS4. I intentionally skipped the PS3 for all these years for KH3.

  • DarthSithZero

The PS4 multiplayer will be free?

    • Chk991

You need to buy a PS+ account to play online.

      • DarthSithZero

I mean the just the multiplayer like PS3

        • Crevox

No, you now need a PS+ account.

          • DarthSithZero

Damn what a shame, but hey still a better console than XBone

    • http://www.cubiz.tk/ Auragar

      No. Unfortunately.

I fear that cloud service will be heavily limited unless Sony has the power to instantaneously bring all PS3 games on cloud service within a short time period.

    • Chk991

To begin with we don’t even know which games would be available. I doubt the entire library would be available.

  • refrain

So I can stream PS3 games on my PS3?

  • Prinny Dood

They barely mentioned anything about the vita, except what we already knew, well at least I can play kingdom hearts 3 on vita , but this feel like feburary conference all over

    • yo1234

Wait for aksys, marvelous, and such.

  • Raltrios

What exactly does it mean by ‘streaming?’ As in, you need to be online to play it, like a video stream?
I might need a PS3 after all. I need something to play my ToX CE on, after all…

  • Damarius Wingfield

    HEYO!

  • Spirit Macardi

Something tells me only certain titles will be available on it. Let’s face it, while they’re no doubt going to keep popular stuff like (insert generic shooter here), I have a feeling we won’t be seeing any titles by Atlus or Nippon Ichi.

  • Tg

I hope this is just like Amazon’s streaming service where you can download the entire movie onto your computer and play it while it’s still downloading. If you officially bought the movie, it’s yours to keep as long as it plays on the Amazon compatible video player.

I’ve used Amazon’s service for renting movies once in awhile. If it was streaming on their official site, it would have a lot of weak buffers, but downloading it was a breeze. The one time it had a buffer problem (when playing on Amazon’s site), Amazon refunded my money, which was nice of them. They didn’t have to since I managed to download the rental after getting aggravated at the website stream. :D
