Valkyria Chronicles 3 Extra Edition Is Just $25 On PSN In Japan

By Spencer . July 3, 2013 . 9:30am

valkr1If you’ve been playing Project X Zone, you’ve likely met Kurt Irving and Riela Marcellis. Those two characters are from Valkyria Chronicles 3, which Sega decided not to release in the West.

But, if you don’t mind Japanese text you can get Valkyria Chronicles 3 Extra Edition which includes the game and DLC missions for 2,500 yen ($25) via PlayStation Network. That’s the new price for a digital copy of Extra Edition. Downloadable content for Valkyria Chronicles 3 and Valkyria Chronicles 2 is also half off until August 28.

The group working on a fan translation for Valkyria Chronicles 3 (which also supports Extra Edition) is hard at work on a patch. While a patch has not been released, the text has been translated. They’re working on polishing the text and then translating the DLC missions.

any good place to get point cards?

  • Tom

NOOOO! You’re playing with my nerves, I almost got a heart attack… I thought the game finally gets a western release :( SEGA, what are you waiting for?!

    • Farid Belkacemi

“Valkyria Chronicles 3 Extra Edition is just $25 on PSN in JAPAN”

Next time, just read the headline first :D

  • Sardorim

Really saddened that Imca(VCIII) and Sakura(Street Fighter) didn’t get in PxZ.

  • Randgriz

    Valkyria Chronicles 3 …. -Sigh- …
Sega you was able to translate Hatsune Miku for PS3 fine and dandy, why not this!?

    • mojack411

To be fair, localizing Project DIVA just involves translating some menus. They didn’t even translate the karaoke, just converted them to romanji. I can’t imagine it took a whole lot of effort.

But yes, I’ll never understand why the third VC never made it over here.

      • LightGenx

Sega’s transition to the PSP + Poor sales for VCII = No VCIII for the west. Pretty simple.

        • Kai2591

VC’s downgrade to the PSP was a most tragic decision ever as far as I’m concerned.
…the beautiful art-like graphics style completely disappeared in the PSP. *sigh*

  • Vesperion

After playing Project X Zone i been feeling the urge to play those games i skipped out on like Resonance of Fate, Shining Tears (i think it was called that) and finishing up the Valkyria Chronicles games.

Although after i seen the anime i lost the desire to play the First game since i knew the story

    • mojack411

That’s what I thought too, but the anime and game stories actually diverged pretty drastically about a third of the way through so I would say the game’s story is still well worth it.

    • Oreki

I think you meant Shining Force EXA, but i could be wrong.

      • Vesperion

It was on the PS2. That may have been the name

        • Ferrick

yeah it is shining force EXA

    • z_merquise

You should really check Resonance of Fate. I really love the stylish gun battles and the gameplay is very unique (and also fun).

      Also, because Vashyron!

      • Vesperion

@z_merquise:disqus I do have the game, but i’m so far behind. I plan now to get to get around to it soon.

@mojack411:disqus Yeah i heard it was different like that

      • KnifeAndFork

I like the gun battles in it more than Mass Effect rpg

    • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

The anime and game’s story may be relatively close, the anime is a pale comparison to the game when it comes to characterization. Do yourself a massive favor and grab the game. You won’t regret it.

      • coax

I really didn’t like the way the anime portrayed Alicia’s change, especially the part where she takes off her headband, it seemed too out of character after what they had established in the game.

  • mojack411

I just died a little bit inside.

  • Lexaus_the_Alchemist

I hope Sega is still planning something bigger for this series other than crossovers and mobile games. Seeing IPs, like this and a few others in Sega’s camp, just sitting in the basement twiddling their thumbs is heartbreaking. ='(

    • Ferrick

from the looks of it SeNA is just milking the sonic series again and again and again =<
heck we don't even get one of the most hyped mmo from them either

    • KnifeAndFork

Sega is on life support dude

      • pekikuubik

Nope, Sega is a powerhouse for PC strategy games now.

But their Japanese arm isn’t in any trouble either. There seems to be a lot of misinformation about Sega out there.

        • Ferrick

Sega Japan is running fine, and they also get profits from PSO2 too

Sega NA on the other hand… sure they are a powerhouse for pc strat games, but that won’t get them that far…

  • Neophoton

It’s a shame Sega hasn’t done anything with the series beyond crossover appearances as of late… a VC4 would be wonderful.

    • Kai2591

VC4 on the PS3 or PS4 to be exact, would be SPECTACULAR.

(ps. the person who downvoted you is a complete idiot and utter jerk.)

      • Neophoton

I’d love them to get back to the home consoles, not that VC3 was bad. I enjoyed it more so than VC2!

(It’s just a downvote, dear. They’re not fun, but I wouldn’t sweat about them. Maybe they dislike the games or something? :P)

        • Kai2591

          I haven’t played (or rather, can’t play) VC3 but it sure looks a lot better than VC2… ;_;

haha alright I’ll take it easy about the downvotes ;)

          • Neophoton

I’d say VC2 is the weak link of the three, but it’s not a bad game by any means. Just feels the least inspired. :)

The translation team is pretty motivated, so it’s good to see others will be able to play it eventually.

          • Kai2591

Agreed. VC2 is fun to play but the story and characters were lacking – not up to par with the original. The maps were disappointingly small too (hardware limitations of course). Also, the lack of Japanese voices in the localized version was a turn off for me, but I endured it anyway.

Good to know there are dedicated fans translating it…but I just don’t want to mod my PSP anymore.

  • KingGunblader

I want VC3 so bad. If there’s a patch in the works then I am definitely importing it.

    • Vesperion

Wouldn’t you need custom firmwear to run a psp patch like that?

      • fenix7

        ya, I think so.

        • Jechty

Not anymore. Well, sort of. You don’t have to modify anything permanently anymore. You just run some kind of tool from your memory stick and it modifies your firmware until you turn it off.

      • Audie Bakerson

EVERY PSP owner should CFW their system. Even if they aren’t pirating anything, the increases in battery life, load speeds, portability and ability to patch games if you rip the ISO and place it on a microsd is huge.

        • Slayven19

Welp time to buy another psp then.

  • z_merquise

I remember a Sony guy at Twitter asked which Japanese RPGs they wanted to see in Vita and Valkyria Chronicles 3 is one of the games with many votes.

Not sure if that’s just for show or if Sony are really going to do something about it but I’m hoping more on the latter.

    • Brimfyre

Yeah but didn’t the top vote blow all the others away? A Tales game I think. So irritating. Of course they will release a Tales game on the Vita, vote for something that doesn’t have as good a chance.

  • Dominic Hunter

Wait, I thought we weren’t allowed to link to unofficial translations here?

    • solbalmung

Exactly my thought, last time I mentionned somthing about an unofficial translation, my post got deleted right away…

    • KnifeAndFork

I guess they make an exception because Sega is being so dumb with this

      • Naux

You know everybody loves Sega. :D

      • Kai2591

        lol ouch

    • Kalis Konig

Siliconera seems to like to pick and choose. especially when it comes to the tales of series. I remember them mentioning a translation once about a tales game lol.

  • fenix7

How can I download a Japanese game from the PSN?

    • coax

First make a separate Japanese account, just make up your personal details with an address in Japan. Grab a demo game to check that everything is working. Then buy a gift card when you want to pay for stuff.

      • fenix7

        ahh thx for the info!

  • V. Dokk.

Meanwhile, here in the western side, we must depend on a fan translation..*sigh*

  • KnifeAndFork

Why doesn’t Sega just pay the team working on the fan translation patch and rerelease it to PSN only with Vita support????

    ( >_< )

    • Lucius

Knowing Sega of America it wont happen, even if it did they will probably take a year or so to do their “fine polishing” to the game themselves.

  • Ni

I think i’ll skip VC2 and go straight up to this one since cheap now.
I can’t like VC2 in anyway except for the battle system ):

    • Shizumasa

No need to play VC2 at all since VC3 takes place during the events of the first game.

      • almostautumn

Except to play one of the finest PSP games ever, that is—
But also, VC3 has a lot of nods to VC2 in it; in fact, there are a number of events where you directly come into contact with the VC2 cast, but who are younger at this point. Furthermore there are some spoilers towards the main story of VC2, particularly with Avan’s brother, and so— I mean, I’d suggest playing VC2. It’s a totally badass game.

  • $7573679

If there are trophies I’ll buy it. Anyone know if it is possible to figure this out somehow?

    • Hraesvelgr

It’s a PSP game, why would it have trophies?

    • Vesperion

      Psp games don’t have trophies

      • $7573679

Damn, thought it was for PS3.

Oh well, if they add trophies to VK 1 I guess I’ll buy that instead then. -_- (Guess that is not likely 3 years after though).

    • almostautumn

You should probably buy videogames that you want to play— not because of a valueless digital token.

      • $7573679

Hey, it makes for good conversation with friends when we scroll through them at some later point. Not to mention that it brings back memories and serve as an album of your gamer history. Trophy hunting increases the value too, as after you are done with the game you got something more to do afterwards. It may also increase the longevity of a game several times its original design, not to mention that it may help you discover things about the game you did not know about.

        So ye…

  • dragoon_slayer12

With project x zone out, now would be a perfect time to release the game. Their both srpg’s, and those characters are pretty bad ass (as with most of them, if not all.)

    • Indeed, and the same goes to 2nd Super Robot Wars OG as well (since it features Sanger Zonvolt who also appears in PxZ and such).

      • dragoon_slayer12

They should either reprint endless frontier or make a sequel, cuz that duo are my 2nd favorite (damn that bitch is sexy). My favorite being Zephyr and Leanne

        • That’s a possibility, but I rather see OGs2 getting localized, and so does Operation Hotblood as well. It’s a great SRPG for the PS3 and it has a detailed library that basically explains to you what happened before, so there’s no problem when it comes to understanding the continuity and such.
Also, you can’t say no to the Sword that Cleaves Evil.

  • Jesse Torres

Im thankful for the localization of project x zone, it introduced me to many series I did not know about.

    • Sylveria

Yep. Same. I actually got a couple games I had no prior knowledge or interest in because of the characters appearing in PXZ.

  • Nero

North America is never going to see this game. Sigh

  • This the first time I’ve seen Siliconera mentioning a fan translation group, great to hear.

    • Barrylocke89

They’ve actually talked about the Tales of Innocence translation patch as well. They praised how the team went beyond patching it to fix things in the game as well (like bugs and UI tweaks)

  • Warboss Aohd

why do ya mock us Sega?

  • CirnoLakes

If you haven’t signed up for a Japanese PlayStation Network account yet, now’s the time.

  • lulu M

It sucks to be a fan of SEGA’s VC and Yakuza series.

    Why SEGA? Why?!

    • mirumu

It could be worse. You could be a fan of SEGA’s Shenmue series.

      • LightGenx

        Too far..

  • Kai2591

Wish I could download a Japanese Language Mastery DLC into my brain…
