Capcom recently revealed new characters for Sengoku Basara 4, which is said to take place in a parallel world set in the Muromachi period. To commemorate the occasion of their latest announcement, series producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and director Makoto Yamamoto talked about details surrounding the characters along with some new features to Famitsu.

As previously reported, the keyword that defines the upcoming fourth installment is “Sengoku Genesis,” which was revealed when the game was first announced in late March during a Basara festival. The meaning behind this concept is that, Sengoku Basara 4 will be about the “making” of the Sengoku period. This is the reason they chose the Muromachi period for the setting, as it was the era that ended just as the Sengoku period had begun.

Sengoku Basara 4 will include Date Masamune and Ishida Mitsunari, who’ve previously appeared in past installments of the series. Famitsu asks why they were chosen to appear in the upcoming game.

“Up until now, we haven’t properly portrayed how Masamune came to power. That’s something we’d like to properly show off,” says director Yamamoto. “Mitsunari, too, who appeared in Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes, was only portrayed after the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which we’d like to cover the new drama surrounding him as the vassal of Hideyoshi. For this reason, those who haven’t played any of the previous titles won’t have anything to worry about.”

The above is a look at Shima Sakon and Katsuie Shibata, who will be making their debutsin Sengoku Basara 4. Famitsu asks what we can expect from them.

Yamamoto explains,“Both of them are of a much younger generation when compared to Masamune or Mitsunari. They are considered rookies among commanders.” He adds that Sakon is living in a world where he no longer knows where to go or what to do, so he has decided to follow Mitsunari.

“A dice roll is what determines his actions, which goes with his love for gambling and light-hearted personality. It will be interesting to see what kind of chemistry he will share with the many straight forward people who are lined up in Toyotomi’s (Hideyoshi) army,” adds producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi.

“Sakon’s actions are characterized by his acrobatic movements. He will have two styles which can be changed with a single button, and it will look cooler the more you try it out,” Yamamoto explains about his fighting style.

Ashikaga Yoshiteru (pictured above) is another character who’s been recently revealed for Sengoku Basara 4. According to Kobayashi, he will not be a playable character, but an enemy commander. If you compare the Sengoku Genesis to a casino, Ashikaga’s role will be that of the dealer, as he will have a high-ranked shogun’s position, which is much higher than the other characters. His position is even higher than those of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi in past installments.

As previously reported, Ashikaga’s weapon of choice is a sceptre that has the ability to transform into other weapons. Yamamoto says he’ll be changing its forms by spinning it around, as something similar to a roulette feature.

Famitsu concludes the interview with a message for the fans from the director and producer:

Yamamoto: “We’re plunging into a new chapter, so we’ve made it a point to have something new for the fans of the series to enjoy, and those who don’t know anything about it will be able to enjoy it, 100%. By all means, please take this opportunity to further expand Sengoku Basara’s loop.”

Kobayashi: “I’m relieved we were finally able to announce more details on the game. I’m also very eager to hear about the impressions of those who are reading this right now. The game can also be enjoyed as a pure action game, too, so please look forward to it. Again, we’ll be revealing the latest information along with a showing of a trailer during the upcoming Stage “Sengoku Basara” Military Commander Festival 2013 (July 13-14th,) please look forward to that, as well!

Sengoku Basara 4 is slated for release in early 2014 for PlayStation 3.

I think the bigger challenge here for Capcom Japan is how to keep Sengoku Basara’s exaggeration of the Warring States Era of Japan, while keeping it historically accurate.

    • Thomaz Barros

No such thing as historical accuracy in Basara.
Yukimura has never served under Shingen

    • KnifeAndFork

how bout the even bigger challenge of localizing it

      • Just Tim

Japanese history, and sadly, the only history mainstream ‘MURICANts know about Japan is WWII.

      • Fidelis

“We tried it, didn’t work out. You can always import it!”
I recall an interview with..Seth, maybe..going like that.
I do’t think any amount of complaining or begging capcom will do anything..because..I mean..begging and complaining works, which is why they tried SB3
The problem is that the sales sucked..

        • Cerzel

The problem there is that they didn’t advertise it at all. Everyone I know who’s played it loved it, but every one of those people, me included, had only heard about it to begin with from another friend who was playing it at the time.
Hell, even if it did sell well, I believe Seth also said they expected it to sell 2 million+ copies, which is just once again Capcom having absurd expectations. It’s a real shame because the game was great and the dub was really well done too.

  • tubers

It looks barely above a VITA game. (Toukiden as a reference)

  • Grape Monet

It looks like they’re still using Sengoku Basara 3′s engine.

I hope Oichi is in this one, she’s so gorgeous. New characters looking good too, I love SB characters designs.

    • http://www.sstefania.com/ SStefania

Well, one of the new guys was historically her second husband, I thought they made him look similar to Nagamasa because of that, but since it is a prequel, Nagamasa may even still be alive!

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/santosstrife Santos Strife

I really hope so! They are my first maxed characters in SB2H!

  • Warboss Aohd

will yer allied troopz actually be useful in dis game?

  • burnfist23

So does this mean Ieyasu will be returning to his Princess Peach-role?

    • Tre W

Probably not, for more than one reason. On one hand, “Little Ieyasu/Takechiyo” from SB2H was basically just a clone of Toshiie with two skills. Since they already went through the trouble of remaking Ieyasu as a competent guy, with an original moveset, who doesn’t need Tadakatsu saving him every five minutes, I doubt that they’ll bring back his younger self or that characterization ever again.

Also, in a previous interview, Kobayashi even went on to say that one of the things that he and Team BASARA lament was that they underutilized Ieyasu. So that’s another thing that likely will make it so he likely won’t become a “dude in distress” again.

      • burnfist23

Yeah, but if this is really taking place during the Muromachi period, then the only way SB3 Ieyasu can exist is if they go “Screw continuity, let’s throw him in!” (Or maybe just have him as a playable character without any story mode).

        • Tre W

It’s actually not taking place during the Muromachi period but at the end of it, and when the Sengoku period actually began.

The main reason they’re going with this whole “parallel world” thing is so that they can get away with having the likes of Mitsunari and Masamune present. Because otherwise, those two guys wouldn’t have any business being present in the early portions of the Sengoku period, where they weren’t even born yet! 8D

Long story short: You can largely forget about SB3 and everything else that has come before, because this is a “brand new telling” in a “parallel world”. Some things from the old games may roll into the new game, but worrying about ages won’t be one of them.

          • burnfist23

            Ah that makes sense.

  • Prinnydoom

No Yukimura? Ah well Masamune is just as good.

    • darryl scott

noo but hes my favorite sb charter of all time sinc devil kings

    • Sardorim

I think he’ll be in the game as Yukimaru was around for awhile. He may just not be a main focus.

Hopefully Tokugawa is playable since he did server under Nobunaga when he was younger.

  • Alex Sargeant

    Trailer!? Nice!

Little confused as to if this means there’ll even be lots of returning characters. Hideyoshi and Hanbei fan here so.. you can see why I may be interested after SB3.

    • Tre W

Hideyoshi’s voice actor will be present at the event on Saturday, along with Mitsunari’s and Yoshiteru’s. I think things are looking good for fans of H+H!

  • Göran Isacson

Huh, so they’re going the prequel route? Guess that works, but I wonder what they’ll do after this (IF they’ll do anything with it, that is…)

  • eilegz

hopefully they add online coop, i mean seriously even koei with its 2007 style online its better than none, i know that capcom i can do better use re6 online component for basara…

  • Rafael Martines

Capcom USA I will never forget the mess you did with this franchise :(

  • roockie112

Man I hope they add the previous people sengoku basara is not the same without Yukimura ,Keiji,Motochika,Ieyasu,Sasuke and Kojuro Katakura

  • D. Collins

And i Literally just sold my Sengoku Basasra 3 samurai Heroes today, now i feel like playing it

  • Brandonmkii

If Hideyoshi and Azai were playable again I’d be ever so happy.

  • Weird Al Yankovic

Kasuga, Noh, and Basara difficulty. That’s all I want. Is that too much to ask?

  • Sardorim

    Katsuie Shibata look so young!

Hey… Will Tokugawa be playable in this?

  • Monterossa

    Sengoku Musou rules!

  • Vyse Legendaire

Sengoku Basara, forever import-only for the die-hards. I’ll be happier knowing they don’t butcher the game with ‘Merican friendly crap anyhow.

  • Kinard Trader

I hope Capcom bring this to the US like they did with Samurai Heroes
