Blend Black Magic And Cancel Enemy Attacks In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Famitsu has more details about the battle system in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which only has Lightning as a playable character. It’s not an action game though, Lightning Returns still uses the ATB battle system. By changing garb in the heat of battle Lightning can use different attacks.

As you would expect, the Black Mage garb increases Lightning’s prowess with offensive magic. It also gives her a new ability that blends wind and thunder elements called Thundara + Aerora. Another change is the Area Sweep move will hit multiple enemies if they are around Lightning. I guess that makes it useful if Lightning is surrounded.

Lightning can block to reduce damage from enemies and with a well timed strike she can cancel an enemy’s attack. This maneuver is called a counter blow, which you can execute by doing a physical attack right before an enemy hits you. Lightning can also injure monsters by chopping off their tails or horns. This weakens monsters and changes the items you win after battle.

Love fighting? Yusnaan has a colosseum called the Arena Slaughterhouse where you can satiate Lightning’s bloodlust. But, don’t spend too long there because Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII has a timer that counts down to the world’s imminent destruction.

I have a big feeling I’m going to go into this game trying to find a way to stop/slow down time as soon as possible.
That and. . Rat Tails! Behemoth Horns! Nostalgia factor +1

    • Suriel Cruz

When you mention Colosseum, You just don’t mention ‘timer that counts down to the world’s imminent destruction’. xD

  • WyattEpp

“It also gives her a new ability that blends wind and thunder elements…”
    Okay, sounds good.

    “…called Thundara + Aerora.”

    • Torraint

      well.. that was unexpected XD

    • Raze

      lol

It should’ve called Storm or something

      • Randy Marsh

Well knowing the American localization team, they would even know that name will probably sound stupid and they will change it to something like “Wind Storm” or “Thunderstorm”.

        Er hopefully… I mean Thunder + Aerora? Come on, I can’t even defend that…

        • Raze

          Or Lightning Storm

          • James Marsh

            or Lightning Strikes. ;)

          • http://Gematsu.com/ Bruno Silva

            or “Lightning Returns”

            :3

          • Quacker

Or Lightning Cloud, just to rile up people even more about the Cloud thing

        • ShadowDivz

Yeah, i was expecting a cool name, but then you read “thunder+aerora”.
I mean, come on Square. Be serious.

    • Raharu95

Pretty uninspiring, is it not? X3

      • D H

Uninspiring, maybe, and I wouldn’t be against changing it, but at the very least it tells you exactly what it is and what to expect from it. If you know your FF spells, you automatically know that’s a Thunder and Wind element spell; something like Lightning Storm or Thunderstorm does get that across, but it also sounds like it could just be an upgraded Lightning-element attack as well.

    Interesting…

  • Azurelegance

I’m really digging her black mage costume :)

    • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

It is nice, and we meet again other Azure lol

  • Virevolte

I can see myself doing annex random stuff until the end of the world…

  • Barrylocke89

    Clipping Tails and Horns…

Next thing you know, Lighting’s Armor Set will cameo in Monster Hunter 4.

  • Tom

This Aerora magic always sounded like Areola for me…
Canceling enemy attacks? I enjoyed it really much in Grandia III. Wonder how this will turn out in LR:FFXIII.

  • EtroAnime

Still haven’t gave 13-2 or try and this one doesn’t even interest me at all. I find that weird because I really enjoyed FFXIII.

    • Nanaki

Maybe you find it strange because you rather judge something like a video game before you actually play and experience it?
      Just a thought.

      • EtroAnime

Not judging it at all, it may turn out to be an awesome game but if I don’t have the desire to play it than that all it is, nothing more nothing less. :)

        • Nanaki

Fair enough. I hope you do decide to play through them one day, but to each his own. :)

    • Quacker

i feel that if you liked 13 then you should try 13-2 one day, its pretty cheap right now too and i like it just as much as the original.

  • davidvinc

This sounds awful. Not only is there one character, but there’s also a timer on the entire game?!

    • BB

Where the fuck were you when they announced this feature in the first place.

    • D H

So, I’m guessing you didn’t like Majora’s Mask, then? A fairly high rated game that also works on a strict timer?

  • ShadowDivz

Im confused. I thought this was gonna have a sort of “Tales of” battle system, but now i read it’s still gonna be the ATB battle system.

    But then i read this:

Lightning can block to reduce damage from enemies and with a well timed strike she can cancel an enemy’s attack. This maneuver is called a counter blow, which you can execute by doing a physical attack right before an enemy hits you.

How hell are you suppose to pull that off? The characters attack the minute the gauge is full. Or do you just have to press triangle. Which would still make it hard to do, because then Lightning-chan will have to get in close to attack. So you’d have to think about that when your considering parrying/counter blow.

    • Quacker

i assume from what i have read that the gauge fills up over time and you can use it up as it fills by pressing a button to attack or cast a spell. could be totally wrong here though.

    • Ehren Rivers

Yeah… It’s a lot like the ‘Tales of’ games in control style (Graces most closely), but the catch is that the ‘Tales of’ games aren’t really what you’d call Action RPGs either. They’re a sort of middleground, and Lightning Returns seems to be keeping in with that idea.

You can move around the field freely, you press buttons to use specific attacks. The attacks happen as soon as you press the button, and you can only use abilities as long as you have points in the ATB Guage. It refills over time, so you’re supposed to switch between schemes.

It’s timed button presses with a constantly-regenerating action point cost.

  • Alestaos

Lack of imagination on the names for the mixes could of had cool names like Tempest. Still looks awesome loved the dressphere system from X-2 i clocked over a 100hours in that game. I like lightning as a character tbh and this looks like a good entry as a sequel until XIV and XV are released on PS4. Slso this system could really be made use of if they made another dissida man i love that game, always hoping for another. This time would love to see Yuna switch between Gunner and Summoner and Lightning between her specialised garbs from this. Man i get my hopes up…and hopeful karma rewards us with Dissida 3 Final Fantasy Unleashed xD

  • Vash bane

    nice legs

  • Vash bane

.. this sounds difficult I mean in FF games I love looking for goodies around each and every corner and now they add a arena…who knows how many goodies will be in there…not to mention I get side tracked very fast in these type of games(i’m looking at you VP).
