Metal Gear Solid V Will Still Include "Stupid Jokes"

By Ishaan . August 26, 2013 . 11:00am

Metal Gear Solid games often tackle serious themes but also have a healthy dose of strange humour accompanying them, often delivered through their oddball characters. Metal Gear Solid V will be no different.

On Twitter, series creator Hideo Kojima tweeted, “Since the theme of my next project is ‘Revenge’ I’ve tried to stay serious but I couldn’t help including stupid jokes again.”

“My team members positively accepted & said that’s the essence of MGS but I’d better keep my mouth shot [sic] to Yoji [Shinkawa] in case he resists.”

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is in development for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

  • Wouldn’t miss it. Adds to the charm of the game as it has the past ones. It’s great running into them either up front or as easter eggs.

Oh man, I’m already getting flashbacks of Psycho Mantis’ antics in MGS1. Guess I’d better head over to Home Depot and buy supplies to rebuild the 4th wall this time…

  • Pdugna

Cant wait to play this on my PS4 will be the introduction to MGS series for me….(bought the collection non-legacy but havent played it). That visual demo that showed at the Microsoft conference at E3 was amazing.

    • César H. Sandoval

You should really start playing the collection before, IMHO.

When you play MGSV, playing the older games would be harder for you because of the tech-limitations and the backstory.

So you may wanna give it a go, you have time. Remember to play it like: MG1 -> MG2 MGS1 -> VRmissions -> MGS2 -> MGS3-> MGS4 -> Peace Walker.

I’d HIGHLY recommend playing the other games first. The story is gonna be confusing as hell plus its gonna be harder to go back to the other games what with their older control schemes and stuff.

      • Thom

I second that. Experiencing the plot unfold over each game is something that should be experienced rather than reading up on the backstory. And I have to add that MSG3 holds up extremely well.

  • Unit076

tbh, I’m more curious about the TECHNOLOGY aspect

  • JustThisOne

Looks like Johnny’s going to be back in some way or form.

  • Penguin

    stupid jokes? can’t wait!

  • XiaomuArisu

    OF Course!
Look at this face! MGS always was Serious+Silly+Awesome!
    Its not over yet!

  • SirRichard

Reassuring news, I was legitimately worried that it was just going to be all serious all the time, and as well as that simply not being Metal Gear as we know it, the industry has enough serious grim games as it is. You always need a bit of levity to contrast the darker elements.

    • Thom

And Kojima’s style of humor is very distinctive. That bizarre contrast between serious topical drama and goofiness is a defining feature of the series. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • Seta Soujiro

Not sure if it was just me but i’ve played most MGS games and the humor in mgs4 was at times lame and unapealing. hope the humor is smarter this time around

  • Was there ever any doubt?

  • harmonyworld

It wouldn’t be MGS without the goofy joke, dude!

  • linkenski

If the game feels anything like what I remember from the other older MGS games, I’ll love this. Actually to me, the best part of MGS is all the over-the-top stuff and weirdness it has. I just love it, because it’s unlike anything else I’ve seen before.

  • Göran Isacson

I know I keep harping on about this, but dudes and dudettes- Guy Savage. Imagine it as a new minigame… possibly made in the Revengeance engine. Just pops up after BIg Boss has been tortured and you shut off the console so he goes to “sleep”. Imagine that indeed…

  • Hinataharem

    Vamp Eyer

  • Calling it, there’s going to be a joke about if Big Boss/Snake uses his prosthetic hand to “relieve” himself if you get what I mean.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

I hope there aren’t stupid jokes at the expense of child soldiers.
