Final Fantasy XIV To Receive Major Update Every Three Months, PvP Coming

By Ishaan . August 27, 2013 . 8:30am

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is out today, and Square Enix have shared their plans for periodical updated to the game.

Speaking with the PlayStation Blog, producer Naoki Yoshida says that the development team plans to roll out a “major update” for Final Fantasy XIV every three months, continually adding large-scale content to the game.

“We’ve already begun work on the first update that is currently called patch 2.1,” Yoshida shares, “and will introduce a large-scale housing system, as well as ‘The Wolves’ Den’ — the first ever PvP content in the series. Furthermore, the update will include new dungeons, a new daily quest system, new Primal battles, extensions to the main story, and loads of other new content to enjoy.”

“There will be a significant update every three months, so everyone will be able to continue enjoying the game for a very long time! Of course we also have long-term plans to release full expansion packs, so watch out for future updates on those, too.”

So, how often can you expect to see full expansion packs? Back in February, Yoshida stated that the plan is to release the first expansion within two years of launch.

    going to get my copy as right now. Hopefully the lo in issues are fixed by the time I return.

  • Byas

    I’m glad that I pre-ordered it, bugs on the early access aside the game is pretty good so far, and with these planned updates it seems that it will still live for a long time.

  • The Watcher

    If only PSU had this kind of support for Western Servers…

    • Brandonmkii

      I kind of never want to play PSU again, with PSO2 being wayyyy better. I just miss being able to mix and match clothes with non-Cast characters.

  • Jonah Paley

    “the first ever PvP content in the series”
    Dissidia? FFXI’s Ballista? There’s been PvP in the FF series before.

    • 하세요

      Ballista isn’t really PvP – not as much as people wanted it. Dissidia isn’t main series, which is what I’m sure they are talking about.

    As much as I wanted to play this, I just don’t have the time to now that college started back up.

    • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

      Really? I played games all the time while in college and still graduated with a 3.5 GPA. Priorities.

      • zferolie

        some of us don’t have good priorites

        • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

          Apparently, lol.

      • Guest

        I can still manage games, just not as much as I would like to. Since I’m taking 6 classes instead of the standard 4 due to me missing a semester.

        • What college has a standard of 4 classes per semester? O_O I would like to have those courses.

          • SohoX

            colleges that have 4 classes as standard semester usually involve classes that have 4 credits instead of 3. While having 1 less class to worry about sounds nice, the longer class times (MWF being 75 minutes instead of 50 iirc) and the extra stuff that comes with 4 credit courses outside of class more than make up for having 1 less class. ymmv though.

            I’ve done both and I’d rather have 5 classes @ 3 credits each than 4 classes @ 4 credits each. Comes down to personal preference.

    • Alestaos

      It caters to those who dont have alot of time as well its been done well

  • SlickRoach

    Sounds very promising! I’m on the fence about getting this for PS3 (laptop is too weak to run a game this scale) but I don’t know if I should stick with WoW or wait for my last free month to kick out before I try this game out. Should’ve tried to get access to the beta though, don’t wanna to commit money to the game only to find out I don’t like it >_<'

    • Alestaos

      PS3 version runs amazingly smooth, i have both and u cant tell the difference in smoothness. Just get a usb keyboard for talking :) I would say its upto you atm you could buy ps3 version get 30 days free on XIV and decide then.

      • SlickRoach

        Hmm, how about hotkeys? Is it like WoW where there are 30+ icons on the screen or is not that crazy/cluttered? If so, I at least hope you can map buttons to the keyboard or something.

        I wouldn’t be so doubtful but I haven’t played a satisfying Squeenix game since Tactics A2, and I know the first version was met with many complaints.

        • Nekomataya

 This might help give you an idea of the PS3/gamepad controls.

          I also think the complaints about the first version can’t really be applied to ARR. It’s basically a whole new game with some reuse of assets.

  • zferolie

    I won’t be able to pick up my collectors edition till next week since I am going away for a bachelor party tommorow, but this is good news. I really hope the game is as fun as it looks.

    Plus, SUMMONERS!

    • RovCal

      wow how will u manage married life with a MMO? unless ur wife plays with u.

      • zferolie

        actually, is not my bachelor party, it’s my cousins. I’m one of the Groomsmen.

        But you do bring up a very good question. I doubt I would be able to play unless my wife/girlfriend is a gamer too.

    • Alestaos

      Arcainst is alot of fun, i would say try scholar as well since both Smn and Sch are so different my friend went Sch and turned Smn and vice versa with another :) Good Luck in game

      • zferolie

        what are the main differences between both? And you can change classes? Wow, I am out of the loop on stuff, haha.

        Well, I prepared my PS3 last night, deleting a bunch on my PS3 to make room for this, and next weeks One Piece game

        • Ferrick

          i can’t answer about the difference between the two advanced classes but yes you can change to advanced jobs in this game

          currently its;
          Gladiator => Paladin
          Marauder => Warrior
          Pugilist => Monk
          Lancer => Dragoon
          Arcanist => Scholar or summoner
          Tharmatauge => Black mage
          Conjurer => White mage

          • zferolie

            I see. Interesting. Hopefully the gameplay is good enough for me to want to make multiple characters.

            I haven’t seen any videos of the character creation. Is it good? I have seen all the races, and I think I will make a dark elf and nekomata race, but not sure how much I can customize.

          • Ferrick

            the gameplay is nice and fluid, though its the basic old hotkey press style, with a little bit more emphasis to role

            character creation is good, it took me 1 hour to customize my character to the way i want it, and i’m satisfied. Sure its not to the level of pso2 but its good enough, also you can try the character creation on the benchmark that you can download for free on the main website

          • zferolie

            Yeah I saw that story on here, but I was at work at the time and couldn’t download it. I’ll do it tonight after my flight, and play around with it. It’s cool that it seems to be pretty deep. an hour to make is damn impressive for most MMOs.

            There has been so little video of the PS3 version. The only thing I saw was last night on game trailers, which it seems to use trigger presses to give you as many skills as the Keyboard. Looked like what I did with Xpadder so I can play MMO’s on my computer with my 360 controller.

            By role, you mean healer, tank, and stuff?

          • Ferrick

            yes, there are three roles; healers, tanks, and dps, different classes fall into these categories

            Tank: Marauder, Gladiator, Paladin, Warrior

            DPS: Lancer, Dragoon, Black mage, Tharmatauge, Arcanist, summoner, scholar, and archer

            Healers: White mage, Conjurers

            Hybrid: Bard

          • zferolie

            You spoony bard! I guess they are a jack of all trades but master of none huh? Interesting. Might be fun to try them out.

            SO few healers though. I guess that makes sense given that healers usually have the least amount of classes, but only 2?

          • Ferrick

            well technically they’re still dps, but their skills does give them out-of-roles versatility

            and no, there’s only 1 healer, because one is just an advanced class of the other

          • zferolie

            I see.

            Ah. Just one healer then? Kinda stinks, but not surprising.

          • Ferrick

            well nothing we can do about it, since FF only has one healer class since days of old

          • kool_cid414

            scholar is healer

          • zferolie

            Oh, so there is a healing type of summoner? interesting…

          • Vash bane

            whats also interesting is some classes gain skills of others like(not 100% sure since I didn’t use a tank kind yet) you can gain a cross skill like to restore hp while being in the front lines.

          • zferolie

            Huh, interesting. Is it feasible though? I kinda want to be able to use all the summons one 1 character.

            I only just got back from my bachelor party last night, so haven’t been able to play yet. I plan to start installing it tonight after I download a play a bit of the new one piece game.

  • Pockystix

    I might try the game out when they add more classes. For now it’s just a bit too limited for me. No red mages or mystic knights (knowing how long it took them to add the latter means I might be out of the loop for a long time XD).

    It’s just not a FF class system without a ton of options, y’know?

    • Lightthrower

      Mystic knights?

      • Pyrotek85

        Melee class with sword enhancing magic. The red mage from FFXI incorporated some of their types of spells.

        • Ferrick

          and rune fencers kinda fall into that category too

    • Ferrick

      they’re coming

  • Wesley Kenneth Houpt Mattingly

    I’m loving it when I can log in(damn you 1017). Already dropped 40 hours into it, excluding what I played in 1.0. Really excited that the content update will be that often. Not big into PVP, but it will add more variety to gameplay. Hopefully wars among Grand Companies or Free Companies would be awesome!

  • Jake_Indiman

    I am behind on the lore of this game. Is that a Judge?

    • Enma_Kozato

      The top ranking Garleans have armor based off the judges in 12, so kind of.

  • Im all for this =^_^=

  • Good to hear. Hopefully this game is successful by the time the PS4 version comes out since I’m getting that version.

  • Gah I can’t waaait! My pre-order is coming tomorrow in the mail. I was lucky enough to catch the physical Collector’s Edition on Amazon back in July.

  • Alessandro Arantes

  • eilegz

    shin gabranth? looks so godlike

    • Aunna Terrell

      Gaius (the guy in the picture) and his team (they all wear judge-like armors) have gun-related weapons. Like Gaius has a gunblade, there’s a gunhammer, gunhalbred, and etc~

      • Nekomataya

        You forgot to mention the coolest gun-weapon, Gunbaghnaks. Seriously.

        • Aunna Terrell

          lol pronouncing gunbaghnaks is SOOOOOO fun to say out loud.

  • Alestaos

    I love this game, he made good on his promise. And even though there were issues in EA and still are here and there, but its adjusting to the player and the scale pretty well SE are ontop of alot of the issues as soon as they arrive. The story is amazingly crafted and glad they intend to release updates on that scale. The housing is amazing from the walk around i did in P4 scenes of beauty. Im taking my time through it, letting the rushers rush as im enjoying the world/Story/crafts/everything inbetween. Im glad there slowly introducing PvP and not trying to rush it out and then forget about PvErs. This games PvEreally shines and after all the GW2/Tera/whatever its actually refreshing battle system and quest system now. Its stayed try to FF but also moved with the times.

  • Vash bane

    this is cool but don’t really care about pvp (not competitive at all…or just call me a care bear lol) they are on a roll with this
