The Mighty No. 9 Meets Kickstarter Funding Goal

By Ishaan . September 2, 2013 . 9:30am

The Mighty No. 9, a spiritual successor to the Mega Man series by Keiji Inafune, has met its funding goal on Kickstarter, less than 48 hours after Inafune’s studio, Comcept, launched their Kickstarter campaign.

The Mighty No. 9 features a number of veteran staff that have worked on the Mega Man series in the past, such as composer Manami Matsumae, designer Naoya Tomita and art director Shinsuke Komaki.

The Mighty No. 9 is currently at over $930,000 in contributions. At the $1.2 million mark, Comcept will add two more stages to the game, and at the $1.35 million mark, Mac and Linux versions will be greenlit.

  • Smooosh

    Congrats, No. 9!
Looking forward to more info on this game. :)

  • Shadowman

    WOOOOO!!!

  • LanceHeart

Let’s not forget that at the 2.5 million mark, we get console versions! Wii U, PS3, and 360!

  • Ferrick

holy shit that was fast! congrats Inafune =D, and welcome mighty No.9, i hope you can fill in the void that certain company left for us

    • D H

Right, right, fill in that void that 200+ titles in under 30 years didn’t apparently do anything about…

I swear, I’m among the biggest Mega Man fans there can be outside of those that have to own everything with a picture of Mega Man on it, but… I’m done with the fan community, it’s just ridiculous how they can ignore the very fact that Mega Man games over the last several years of their CONSTANT release were seeing nothing be large sales declines. I’m sorry, but there is no reason for Capcom to do anything with it when all evidence shows that they stand to lose money, they are a company first; they even specifically address with ZX Advent that if it sells less than ZX and continued the downward trend of the series sells, they would not be able to make a sequel for it… somehow, that’s still Capcom’s fault though. The “fans” ignore that Capcom is still putting some form of Mega Man reference into nearly all of their titles, keeping the idea behind the character alive while they attempt to see if there is a way to make his games actually sell anywhere near decent enough to continue, and continue to license out merchandising rights in order to, again, keep the character alive. Hell, it’s these same “fans” that got very verbally angry when Capcom cancelled Mega Man Universe, a game where many if not most of those same “fans” called a horrible looking idea… why should Capcom continue to pursue a title when you’re already telling them you don’t want it, and then have to take the blame when they don’t give you something that you don’t want? It’s like saying I’m going to shoot a missile at somebody, them saying no, I change my mind, and then they complain because I didn’t shoot it; it just doesn’t make any damn sense.

And to make everything about it worse, you can’t have a conversation of any kind with any kind of relation to Mega Man, even just a random, passing, thrown statement like “it’s a platform game,” without these “fans” coming in about how Capcom has ruined their franchise, should be boycotted, “raping” Mega Man “in the basement,” and any other ridiculous thing. Its to the point where many people just won’t talk about one of their favorite things, and rivals the Gundam “fanbase” and their “seedfag” or “ucfag” issues, where, god forbid, somebody wants to have an intelligent discussion about a series. No, instead, it has to degenerate into name-calling, trolling, and outright ignorance of facts, which, yes, can be said about the entire internet, but is much, much worse in these two communities.

Again, I’m done with this Mega Man “fan” community, not just here but everywhere. I know I posted a similar post earlier in the week (not similar to saying I’m done, but similar to the “Capcom hates Mega Man, burn them” part…), and I also know its not going to change anybody’s thoughts or help return the community to something that’s fun; however, it’d be a damn shame not to have a few voices of reason in there, and I’m throwing mine out there in case it fills that void than a certain community left for us.

  • Brion Valkerion

Grats to his team and not at all surprised haha.

Capcom Mega Man collection announcement in 5…4…3… (seriously they get super jealous about this stuff)

  • Byas

I wonder how that guy from Capcom EUR that said Megaman didn’t have enough fan demand feels now.

  • TheGioG

That Kickstarter campaign deserves every cent it’s gotten so far and then some! *sniff* Brings a dang tear to my eye knowing that part of my childhood still lives on in this game. Keiji Inafune, you rock man!

    • http://www.HealyHQ.com/ HealyHQ

      > Keiji Inafune, you rock man!
      > you rock man!
      > rock man!

I see what you did there. ;)

      • TheGioG

        Awesome pun totally intended. XD

    • EX+

Yeah. Even if people don’t pledge, they can get the game off steam or PSN and stuff. Correct me if I’m wrong.

      • British_Otaku

Sure. This Kickstarter like many isn’t an exclusive service or product but intended to get the project off the ground and gauge interest.

As long as these guys release it, you can expect to see it on the digital storefronts for all to play which would be Steam and probably GOG (the only DRM free one I remember) at this point.

The only one with an exclusive service off the top of my head is the one for Osamu Tezuka’s The Crater getting translated. It was more or less literally buying a book (which needs funds first but still) with more goodies if you spend really high amounts and slow shipping >_>. There are no current plans for any more than 2000 limited edition copies printed in English and even in Japan, the 40 year old manga is arranged in a number of incomplete forms at best.

  • Go2hell66

“Capcom cancelled MML3 because there wasn’t enough interest from the fans”

    Ummmm…what!?

    • School Idol Addict

      Capcom and their crazy expectation.

      • FFmax

        Capcom is dumb in general.

      • AuraGuyChris

They expected Barack Obama to buy the game. He didn’t.
        (I kid, I kid).

    • Unlimax

They said the exact same thing about RE Direction , They Dislike Survival horror because “They” think it wont sell and fans aren’t interested on that .

      • subsamuel01

They probably feel stupid when a game like the Last of Us comes out and sells 3.4 million in a week. Capcom and Square have the same problem, they need to budget their games and their expectations properly.

    • AkuLord3

And when it hopefully hits 2.5 million (though i’ll get both PC and Console versions so its all gewd) i do hope Capcom shove their hypocrite mouth shut~

    • TheRealMalek

Did you ever meet a guy working in a marketing branch ?

Those guys are often just completely disconnected from things that don’t touch “normality”.

And often they present products to people that don’t even have the slightest interest in gaming, so they got false directions.

If they really wanted to see what the fan demand was they should have released the paying demo worldwide…

      • Ferrick

kinda explains the whole “Do not knock on window, you will startle the accountants” thing lol

      • GameTaco

In all my bitterness toward the Legends 3 situation, I’ve forgotten about the paid demo that just never happened. That fact has since then been the first sign that Capcom probably never really intended to release the game at all.

        • gk2012

The fact that they’re asking payment for a demo seems like a pretty good indication that the game isn’t really funded by the company at all.

          • almostautumn

Well S-E did it with Dissidia 012. I mean, it was technically a prologue, but it certainly seemed a demo. I thought it was totally cool though; even though it was a “paid demo” of sorts there was unique content to it that wasn’t available in the main-game. Far as I’m aware, MML3′s was looking to be the same way, which I was more than down with.

    • subsamuel01

Watch them announce a new Megaman game soon just because of this.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Well MML2 sold less than ZombiU did.

      Lol.

    • artemisthemp

      Capcom only care about SF

  • epy

Yep, no one cares about Megaman.

    • RichyGaming

It’s not that nobody cares. More like it’s inevitable. I don’t think Capcom gives a rats ass about it though.

      • Herok♞

        that was a sarcastic comment…

  • Chaos_Knight

THE LAST ROW IS IMPORTANT! LET’S MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

    • Superior Spider-Man

      2,750,000 ? ? ?
3,000,000 Slap Capcom in the face with this money for killing
Mega Man Legends 3 and Universe
      3,500,000 ? ? ?
4,000,000 Buy all shares of Capcom.

      • TheRealMalek

you are lacking at least one zero for the last one (two would be more realist)

        • Superior Spider-Man

I meant it as a joke. Considering Capcom has been releasing reports that their games are not meeting sales expectations.

      • Chaos_Knight

3,500,000 to buy Mega Man from Capcom.

      • Solomon_Kano

If Inafune could buy Capcom out on $4,000,000… well, somebody else would’ve done it buy now.

$4,000,000 is like nickels and dimes for a company that large.

        • Superior Spider-Man

The low number is the joke.

          • Solomon_Kano

Oh? Guess it was over my head, then.

        • TheExile285

Unrelated, by how much do you think Atlus would cost?

          • Solomon_Kano

I can’t say, really. In 2010 (before Index had Atlus incorporated into Index Corporation), they were pulling in 2.732 billion yen. According to a currency calculator, that translates to something like $27 mil (though that’s based on current values, so that’s not quite accurate). They make a fair chunk of change, so they likely won’t sell too cheap.

That said, a company’s revenue =/= their market value and, admittedly, I’m not the most familiar with how all of that works.

Perhaps one potential buyer seeks to get them at market value, but perhaps a more ambitious buyer values them higher, because they consider the potential revenue they can generate in the future and offers more. It really boils down to, if I can butcher this idiom, value being in the eye of the beholder.

That’s my long-winded way of saying “I can’t fathom how much they’d sell for because I don’t know their market value, but it’ll be what we’d consider ‘a lot’.”

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

That $1,750,000 goal better be for a Playable Call and that $2,200,000 for the Handheld Vita/3DS versions!

    • Superior Spider-Man

Just checked in. 2/5 of the way to PS3/360/Wii U release and it’s only day 2 or 3.

  • BlueTree

Excellent ideas: Drop Inti-Creates for Spark Unlimited and Double Helix… whoops.

  • Jon McGuire

    Stay free, Capcom.

  • Betrayer

This is starting to feel like the Skullgirls crowd funding project… xD

    • Mental

      Or the Homestuck game kickstarter.

    • TheExile285

      Good thing?

  • urbanscholar

Ladies and gents, this is internet good in case we needed an example.

  • ninjabart122

I’d want the game to look like the concept art provided here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/000/876/919/a1d0e45fc7a68f4c962f2ebcd7a2210c_large.jpg?1377909641 as opposed to this one here: https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/000/853/875/a4d2477d01ae7a44bffec74b42906c0d_large.jpg?1377246507 Since I like the Rayman Legends-esque looking style.

    • Zeik56

The kickstarter page outright says it’s going to be 2.5D, with 3D characters and 2D backgrounds. That concept art does look amazing, but that’s not going to happen on this kind of budget.

      • ninjabart122

        That’s rather unfortunate.

But I’m under this impression that the parallax effect is also considered 2.5D to an extent in the way that it simulates depth, but not entirely “3D.”

  • Strain42

    Hear that?

That is the sound of no one being even slightly surprised by this news.

Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if they hit the 2.5 mil stretch goal to get console releases.

    • School Idol Addict

I’m sure Capcom is surprised lol

      • Arcana Wiz

yes they are, they really thinked that megaman franchise was dead and wasn’t profitable…. and now see this! ^.^

    • Arcana Wiz

yes i’m really happy today, we can really have a megaman on consoles! and they said that maybe they will add more! i really hope that it makes to 3ds/Vita.

  • anarchy_panty

There’s an interesting story here about how Capcom’s neglect of the Mega Man brand created this beast and has allowed it to grow like this. I’m not writing it, though.

    • Arcana Wiz

In reality there are a LOT of devs that exited capcom and made games based on their old ips that capcom let die, like bayonetta that is a game of the DmC dev.

  • AxionAzure

Lovely news! Good luck to Inafking!

  • Guest

    That escalated quickly!

According to Kicktraq, if this trend continues it might hit over the 2’500.000 goal, PS3/360/WiiU versions: Here we go!
    Link: http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/mightyno9/mighty-no-9/

    • Arcana Wiz

kicktrack isn’t the most realiable source….. but i’m really excited maybe we really will have a full megaman game on consoles!

  • Aristides

Like a flash of lightning XD

  • Godman

Yeah I had no doubt that this would reach its goal :)
Now lets bring it over to the consoles!!!

    • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Don’t forget! This might pull off a Skullgirls by adding even more stretch goals after the $2.5M goal is reached next weekend!

  • $61526767

    Damn…
    Congratulations! : )

  • GameTaco

As I’ve said on other sites, this game *deserves* to be on console or handheld. A 3DS release would be beautiful, provided someone is willing to make it work after releasing on PC and “last-gen.”

It just needs to keep a steady influx of backers. Basically, to reach that goal, we’re hoping for Keiji Inafune’s name to carry a Tim Schafer level of weight, in which case a $3,000,000+ fund is entirely possible. Still, surpassing even $2,000,000 is pretty rare.

What I love about this project is how the fans are priority. That was the true heart of the Legends 3 Project, that daring move to keep the fans in the loop through public votes and updates. I feel like that will be an important part of Mighty No. 9.

I read a comment suggesting that, as feedback is taken by Comcept into consideration, there’s a chance of adding a “digital-only” backers tier where we can take the gold Beck and bonus transformation without them needing to worry about the physical incentives to go with it.

…And who knows? One of the other popular suggestions is a disc print to go with the physical box rather than just a download code. It could happen.

    • Göran Isacson

Look upthreads- looks like Renegade Kid, a studio that’s worked on both DS and 3DS games is interested in working with them to get the game onto the 3DS!

    • Arcana Wiz

they açready said that they will try to port it to more consoles and portables based on the backers feedback.

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

Goes by so fast, this is why he didn’t need Kickstarter but publisher hunting probably wouldn’t give him all the features he wanted so a toss up.

  • Göran Isacson

I don’t really have words for this. I just have generally happy spasms travelling throughout my body. So many happy spasms.

    • EX+

I know man! Also, this is a stupid question and I haven’t read the entire thing, but do you have to pledge to get the game or could you get it off steam, PSN etc when it becomes available. That’s not saying I won’t but just wondering.

      • Solomon_Kano

Once the game is complete, anyone can purchase it.

A pledge of a certain amount will get you your copy though, so you’re paying to help the game reach completion AND you get the game when it comes out.

        • EX+

Cool, I’m thnking of pledging $60-$100.just because. More of a chance of getting a PS3 version and I hope PS4.

          • Solomon_Kano

Going big, I see. Mm. I still need to work out how much I’ll be pledging myself.

      • Göran Isacson

What Solomon said! Pledge to your hearts content, receive the game when it hits at the format of your choice!

  • Solomon_Kano

    WOOP!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Suck it!, Capcom you have no power here!

    • EX+

Capcom don’t even have sufficient intellectual power in their own offices.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        oh yeah… ha that’s right

      • Solomon_Kano

Everyone hates Capcom, I know, I know, but we do ask that posters refrain from pejoratives like “Crapcom”. You seem to be new around here, so just a friendly heads up. :)

You can browse the site’s rules here:

        http://www.siliconera.com/open-thread/

        Thanks in advance.

        • EX+

Oh, sorry. Lol Edited it out.

          • Solomon_Kano

It’s cool, man. Thanks for cooperating.

  • leingod

I love that this is gonna get made, but deep inside I’ll always wish Inafune had never left Capcom and that Megaman Legends 3 (along with other Megaman titles) were being made instead.

    • TheExile285

I’m glad he left. Capcom is crap IMO. Their saving grace is MH.

This way, no one is holding him back.

      • Arcana Wiz

yes, capcom must be really bad for one of the senior developer exit and let his loved franchises, of you see inafune video you can see that he LOVES his franchises.

      • leingod

I can’t be glad he left. I mean, I know Capcom isn’t what it used to be… and that’s what I miss the most – a company which encouraged Inafune to do his thing.

        • Zonder88

He was never encouraged to do his own thing. Megaman 2 couldnt even happen without him and the team fighting for it, same with Dead Rising.

Hell, even Ono said the same thing about SF4. Cashcom is about cash grabs, they dont want risks despite having plenty of funds to take risks.

          • leingod

That sucks. Guess I had a more romantic view of the company then.

  • d19xx

I hope they add the Vita as a stretch goal…

    • TheExile285

I hope so too!! They said on Twitter they would bring it PS4 & Vita if there was interest and they could make a profit from it.

Go tell everyone you know to spam their Twitter! Lol

EDIT: Maybe the ??? at 2,200,00 is for a Vita&PS4 release or Vita&3DS.

    • Solomon_Kano

They said they’ll be looking into Vita and PS4 depending on funding reached and interest shown.

    • Arcana Wiz

as Kano said in the comments section they said that they will try to make it in more consoles/plataforms depending of the feedback and comments.

  • kmantle

See, Capcom? WE CARE ABOUT MEGAMAN

    • TheExile285

I’m expecting them to release some crappy rushed MM game to compete with this. I kind of want to see them fail but I dibt want to see an awful MM game lol.

      • Solomon_Kano

They’re smart enough to get that a rushed game wouldn’t do them any favors here, so that’s doubtful.

“People are paying for a new game from Inafune, let’s give them peanuts” probably wouldn’t be a good strategy.

      • z_merquise

Well, Capcom did have Megaman Xover. But no way in hell it can compete with this one.

  • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

    I hope for the following:

$1,750,000: Play as Call in her own Story Mode, or in Co-op “Beck & Call” Mode!
$2,200,000: 3DS and PS Vita Handheld support!
$2,750,000: Level Editor/Construction Mode , like Powered Up!
$3,000,000: Play as Keiji & Saki Inafune!

Note that I didn’t mentioned PS4 and XBOX One, because I believe those two consoles will be added to the $2.5M stretch goal for extra shock value upon actually reaching it.

    • TheExile285

Oh man, I hope you are right about the handheld support!

I don’t want Keiji playable because he would be OP

      *EDITED

      • Guest

Note that I didn’t mentioned PS4 and XBOX One, because I believe those two consoles will be added to the $2.5M stretch goal for extra shock value upon actually reaching it.

        Heh.

You edited, but we both know what was there!

        • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

          The “Keiji” Restoration? Heh, indeed!

    • Arcana Wiz

yeah i really want to call be playable! or at least a partner in some areas….

  • Demeanor

Hey, how about a kickstarter for a localization? Valkyria Chronicles 3, anyone? Tales of effin’ Vesperia on PS3, anyone???

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Try and convince namco to do it so they make one

  • Michael Connell

You know after backing this, I suddenly feel even more inspired to help Inafune in Sweet Fuse

    • Göran Isacson

Ha ha oh man, I know that the game is probably already done by now, but I would love it if they included some kind of nod towards Mighty No 9 in that game now.

  • InfectedAI

Heck yeah, hopefully they end up funding a 3DS port too. Then in the far future, a spiritual successor to the Legends series!

  • Sergio Briceño

The only thing that can keep this game from reaching it’s final stretch goal in my opinion is that as awesome a reward as it is having the game on consoles, the best reward comes with it’s first strectch goal (+2 stages/bosses).

Then again, it met it’s funding in just a day, so who knows, it could be less than a week before it makes 2.5M$.

I wonder and I hope anyone can clarify this for me. Can it get past it’s final stretch goal? Maybe get twice as much and finish production in less time? Or will it stop taking donations after 2.5M$?

    • Göran Isacson

Kickstarter allows the project to accept money up to the final day. Stretch goals don’t have anything to do with Kickstarters business, it’s set by the project creator. That is to say, if they get more than 2.5 million dollars they may just take that money to add extra polish, or they may earn enough to come up with a brand new stretch goal.

    • Arcana Wiz

yep if it reaches 2.5M it can continue receive money, and it’s likely that they make new stretch goals.

  • dahuuuundge

I’m surprised Capcom actually donated 10k to this project.

    • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

Is it the backer who’ll get lunch with Inafune?

    • British_Otaku

To have dinner with Inafune in an attempt to get Mighty No. 9 for themselves with Inafune or to get Inafune back on Legends 3?

      • http://s1.zetaboards.com/Espada_of_Alexandria/index/ konpon568

Hopefully the latter. The Mighty No. 9 is the product from a Labor of Love, so that shouldn’t be in Capcom’s still-dirty hands! But for Inafune to do one last project with Capcom to finally finish Mega Man Legends 3? I would be on board for that!

        • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

Hopefully they’d offer him to work on Legends 3. Tis a waste just to let that game with much promising idea and concept as its foundations end up perpetually stuck in limbo.

  • SDDMN

Heads up for 3DS owners, Renegade Kid is offering to work on a 3DS port of Mighty No.9! Rejoice!

    http://www.gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=211323

    • Göran Isacson

Oooh, that’s interesting! It looks to me like Mighty will take a bit more than the hardware of 3DS can handle, so the end project may be a bit slimmed down… but man, it would be worth it just for the sake of getting this project onto as many consoles as possible.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Why does everyone think the 3DS is weak??

        • Göran Isacson

Because we’ve seen comparisons between the Smash Bros game for Wiiu and the 3DS, and while the 3DS looks nice it doesn’t look as nice as the WiiU version? Didn’t say it was weak: I said I don’t know if it can handle the graphics of a HD title designed for HD consoles.

  • C_Diamond
  • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

Before I slept, it reached the 900K threshold.

I just woke up, and It’s over 1M.

  • Arcana Wiz

now it’s over 1.1M! we can reach the first stretch goal today, please spread the word! comment in facebook, twitter, bug your friends, in short words make this happen!

  • Unemployment Master

Siliconera and Kotaku are the only publications that have a direct link to the Kickstarter’s campaign.

I went on 4 different media outlets, clicked 7 links (on purpose), starting from the Mighty #9 topic trying to get to Kickstarter…
    That is just ridiculous.

    • Arcana Wiz

i’m really sure that dualshockers and gematsu linked the kickstarter on ealier posts.
