Shantae: Half-Genie Hero Announced For Wii U, 360, PS3 And Next-Gen Consoles

By Ishaan . September 4, 2013 . 10:22am

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, a Metroid-esque Shantae game with a large, interconnected world is headed to the Nintendo 3DS later this year. In addition, developer WayForward are also creating a separate Shantae game for the PC, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and launched a Kickstarter campaign for it this morning.

Titled Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, the game will takes cues from Metroid, Zelda and Castlevania, and will feature an all-new art style and story. Like the Metroid-inspired Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse, it will feature an interconnected world.

WayForward have set their funding goal at $400,000. This, they say, will allow them to create three chapters of the game and an “exciting conclusion”. With the help of stretch goals, however, they hope to add more features, such as being able to play as Shante’s arch-nemesis, Risky Boots, and a bonus chapter to play through.

More details regarding Shantae: Half-Genie Hero are available on the game’s Kickstarter page, along with information on the game’s stretch goals.

Nice, pledged for the early download tier. This looks like it will be a good game for series newcomers.

The difference in goal between Comcept and Wayforward is pretty big, but I guess it can be chalked up to experience as well as self-funding? Shantae already has some gameplay shown in the trailer, so they probably already started working on this with their own money.

    • I do find it interesting that one developer is asking for so much less money and releasing the game on more platforms. Not that this is to say Inafune/Comcept are doing anything wrong… it’s just interesting, is all.

      • It’s most likely covering for all publishing costs and other such related things? Or maybe they’re hurting for money. Who knows.

      • idrawrobots

I think Mighty will be better. Maybe the extra money is going to a better game.

        • malek86

I find it more likely that it’s because they are effectively new to PC/console development. So they don’t really know all the tricks to it, meaning they need to set their goal higher to avoid any possible trouble (although, asking more than double the goal for the console versions is kind of weird imho).

Wayforward has been in the industry forever, so they pretty much already know how to manage a game budget, what they need, and how much they’ll spend. Also they can probably use their own money in the development.

At least, that’s what I think.

          • idrawrobots

I do agree with you, but also have been disappointed in Wayforward lately. I believe that Mighty will be a higher polished game.

          • ZEROthefirst

You have to remember, Inafune and a lot of the team behind Mighty #9 aren’t exactly new to the gaming industry (most of the team behind the game are experienced with consoles and PC games). The only real difference here is that Way Forward as a company has been around much longer than Comcept.
Comcept in my eyes has more talent behind them then Way Forward, but since they have only recently started up they don’t have good funding due to only having a few small titles out in the market so far.
So most of the team behind Mighty #9 have been in the game industry longer than Way Forward, but as far as how long their new company has been in the industry we can see why Way Forward would have the advantage in terms of funds and resources.

          • malek86

That’s what I mean. Most of the people in Comcept have experience working in games, but not in working together. That’s a pretty big difference.

      • malek86

Wayforward is an affirmed developer by now, though. They probably have much more experience with consoles, and they likely already received some X1/PS4 devkits.

And they have been around making successful games for a long time, so they probably have some money of their own, whereas Comcept literally just started (I don’t think Inafune made much off those Compile Heart collaborations, heh).

I guess the difference is that Comcept is effectively using the game to “kickstart” their own studios, whereas Wayforward is simply trying to get this one game done.

      • Tom_Phoenix

Then again, we’ve seen that some Kickstarter projects ran out of money in spite of being successfully funded, so it (no pun intended) pays off to be realistic with your budget needs.

        • Well, like @malek86:disqus said, WF have been doing this a while now, so they probably know just how much it’s going to cost. They’re an established studio and they’ve managed to remain stable/profitable all these years. They probably know what they’re doing.

    • Mike Pureka

The obvious answer here, to me is that Wayforward isn’t crowdfunding the entire game. As mentioned, they are an established studio and therefore it’s entirely possible that they have either A) Other, more “traditional” investors who are funding part of the game or B) Some cash in the bank that they intend to use to fund this project. Just because you are launching a Kickstarter for a project doesn’t mean that ALL money spent on that project has to come from the Kickstarter.

This seems like the occam’s razor selection for explanations here.

  • 無尽合体ブランタコブスキ

    Human x Genie interbreeding?

    • d19xx

If the genie is hot, I know what I would wish for…

      • 無尽合体ブランタコブスキ

        Too lewd

  • Looking good! Maybe this will be the first Shantae game I actually play. I’ve been interested in the series for years but never got around to trying it.

  • Boy, a friend of mine even said that WayForward was gonna do a Kickstarter today, and I completely guessed that it’d be for Shantae.

Nice to see I was right.

    • British_Otaku

Shantae is the one of the only licenses that belong to WayForward and it happens to have a lot of presence and selling power, I also guessed Shantae for that reason.

I’m not sure if any of their other works (not licensed ones) would be able to pull an audience like this one.

  • raitouniverse

Nice announcement, but doesn’t it strike anyone else as odd that Shantae’s a lot lighter skinned now? Seems… a bit weird, but maybe I’m just thinking about it too hard. Going to back this one immediately.

    • idrawrobots

You’re right. Maybe she is half Vampire too.

    • AzureRyuujin

      Apparently her sprite isn’t finalized

    • zferolie

As I said in another post above:

“None of the colors are locked down, and everything you’re seeing is
      work-in-progress artwork. But good observation… she’s looking a bit
      washed out when
compared to her “Risky’s Revenge” artwork, isn’t
she? A change wasn’t intentional, other than to make it look nice
against the background.” – per Wayforward on Kickstarter.

    • puchinri

      I was wondering that too~.

  • zferolie

I freaking love this series, and I will so going to give as much money as I can!!

  • Ethan_Twain

Well how about this: I won’t back this kickstarter immediately. But I WILL use some of that 3DS eShop credit I have left over from the Fire Emblem promotion to buy an old Shantae game. I’ll make my funding decision for this new game based on my experience with that.

    • zferolie

That is a good idea. I love the series, and I think you will too, but to be safe, download the GBA or DSi game.

      • Ethan_Twain

There was a GBA game? I thought it was Gameboy color, DSiWare, then an upcoming 3DS eShop release. That’s all I knew about anyway.

GBA isn’t on 3DS eShop anyway though, so I guess it’s a moot point.

        • British_Otaku

There isn’t a GBA game, you got all of them in mind, but it is annoying that select GBA games are only available for ambassadors.

I’m probably going to try out Shantae from the 3DS eShop before backing this, I wish it was on the Japanese e-Shop as well so I can have it on my personal 3DS though… >_>

        • zferolie

Opps I meant GBC. My bad. I confused it that you could play it on the GBA and got s special dance.

          • British_Otaku

Yeah, I read it up recently that we get something special for playing on a GBA. I wonder if it is possible on the 3DS…

Otherwise, the cost is pretty high to get the game physically.

  • Suriel Cruz

    Another KickStarter?!… tho I like Shantae… we’ll see.

  • Happy Gamer

Aha I see why they recently put the GBC version in the estore. I just downloaded it too. It’s hard to realize it is a gameboy color game. it is extremely well made and fun. The details are also insane and still fun today.

    • Kaijumaster

I’d wondered why Nintendo was pushing that game so hard myself.

    • Jeffrey Thrash

If nothing else, Wayforward is one of the masters of hand-drawn 2D graphics and 2D game design.

  • Insta-backed. Love me some Shantae.

  • DarthSithZero

Great, i love these type of side scroll games like guacamelee, Rayman Legends , ducktales.

  • HellMuT

Where is my delicious brown skin?

    • zferolie

“None of the colors are locked down, and everything you’re seeing is

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

Between this and Mighty No. 9, my wallet’s gonna take a beating next month.

  • Leon_Tekashi

Did Inafune become inspirational that companies are now using kickstarter as they make their work now? Wow. :D

    • British_Otaku

These guys were planning to use Kickstarter for a while as well, and Inafune admitted that he owes a bunch to the Shovel Knight crew for giving them advice on how to use Kickstarter among others.

The time difference is far too short for them to suddenly decide that they will put in their hopes into Kickstarter just because Inafune.

      • Leon_Tekashi

Ah..well either way, I’m glad some companies are using kickstarters to connect to us.

  • British_Otaku

A fine trailer with a fine list of games for me to pick up as the year ends… Still need to get that Batman game.

I’m glad to see a Kickstarter which actually shows a demonstration, no offense intended toward the second coming of Megaman, Mighty No. 9. I’ll chip in and support this one definitely.

  • Blesmi

Just dropped $200. My only question is why is Shantae so pale? She was such a qt3.14 with that nice tan.

    • batanen

WayForward said on kickstarter comments: “Hi friends! Since there were a lot of comments regarding skin tone, we lined up all the Shantae artwork from past games, and the skin tones are all over the board. We’ve always left this to artist discretion in the past. However, this new artwork does stand out as the lightest she’s been since back in the GBC days, so I’m sure we’ll adjust it once we have our character lineup established. This is a great example of Kickstarter comments shaping the eventual product, so please make your opinions heard!”

      • Armane

But that’s so wishy-washy, there’s no certainty they’ll actually fix her. Even if they do bring back the tan, they probably won’t fix her awful redesign.

  • neo_firenze

All the talk of Mighty #9 and Shantae here makes me smirk a little bit due to the Capcom connection (Capcom published the original Shantae, and the obvious Mega Man connection with Mighty #9).

Hope Wayforward does this well. They’ve always been technically skilled at making 2D sidescrollers, though sometimes their level design skills don’t reach the high level as their technical prowess, animation, art, etc. Judging by the original and the DSi Shantae games, seems like they up their game for what it feels like is their signature original series. Looking forward to the 3DS game, and hopefully this console game too.

  • Guest

I’m going to be broke with all these awesome Kickstarters :P

  • kylehyde

Shut up and take my money. I liked the theme song, is really catchy. Definitely is good to see how the things changed from the cult following game that is awesome but few people played to a more solid franchise that was saved.

    • Mike Pureka

Yeah, I confess, the first 30 seconds of this video pretty much sold me, and I don’t even HAVE any ‘standing interest’ in this series.

  • Brimfyre

    First Kickstarter I’ve supported.

I have a feeling I’m going to be checking that pledge counter hourly for the next month.

  • Reiswindy

    That video….
Never played the Shantae games, but I guess this will be my first if it gets funded!

  • Solomon_Kano

Ha. Called it being Shantae as soon as they teased it. So now we’ve got the 3DS game and this to look forward to. Sweet.

  • I want Shantae in Smash!

  • Brimfyre

I want to know what the 1.3 million TV set is about.

    A Shantae cartoon show perhaps?

  • puchinri

Yay~! This is great! I’m going to try and get the GBC game off the e-shop and pledge to this later this week.

Also nice to see so many people wondering about the lightening of Shantae. It’d be cute to see another character with a similar design, but that’s hardly Shantae at all with that skintone.

I look forward to this and the 3DS game.

  • Ixbran

wait wait wait, isnt Shantae a nintendo property, or am I wrong? I know little of her series so i just wanna make sure

    • British_Otaku

WayForward developed the first game as an original IP on the Game Boy Color and were then published by Capcom, given that they made multiple games afterwards without them, clearly the rights are in their hands.

The recent games on the DSi (downloadable on the 3DS also ) and 3DS (download only) were published by WayForward themselves.
Chances are they stuck to Nintendo platforms as they have consistently performed when in the West and two out of three of their games came when the handheld market seems to exclusively love them.

If you have a 3DS, you can buy the first one (GBC). It’s pretty good.

      • Scipio

“Chances are they stuck to Nintendo platforms”

I think they just like the platform, as the DSi game recently got port to Steam.

        • Solomon_Kano

It’s not on Steam yet, though it’s been sitting on Greenlight for a year (almost to the day, in fact).

It was, however, ported to iOS in 2011.

          • Armane

It was Greenlit last week. Who knows when it’ll show up on Steam though.

          • Solomon_Kano

            Oh? Well, then.

I’d imagine it’ll be a while before it makes it out, since Half-Genie Hero and the 3DS game are likely being prioritized.

  • Arcana Wiz

this definitly looks interesting, i really want to it suceed….. and reach the 1M stretch goal.

  • ZekeFreek

I can only see this going… WayForward.

  • greg_67

Hopefully they consider future goals to have it on 3DS and Vita for those of us who want to play it on the go.

    • British_Otaku

Considering that they are aiming for all of the consoles from the get go, including Next Gen ones and they have released a good number of portable + console titles in the past.

This seems like it may miss out on the 3DS, a shame given that it had all of the Shantae games playable up to a point, but this is far from Kingdom Hearts territory I guess…

I hope it comes to the portable duo as well.

  • Alestaos

Shame this isnt coming to the vita it looks like a title i would love to play. I guess 3DS will be a start. Art style is like the new rayman series and to me those types of art styles look good on any platform. I wish them the best of luck :)….No idea what a kickstarter is though ^^,

  • Hinataharem

I have been supporting wayforward this long, I guess I’ll continue til the end

  • tobi

    I thought i saw half minute hero…

  • Rashid Al Rabah

Jake Kaufman is making the soundtrack for this, excited!

  • Aristides

I can’t wait for this! I absolutely loved the trailer! I hope they consider making portable versions <3

  • Vash bane

    nice song
