Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII – What’s Going On With Noel & Caius

By Spencer . September 13, 2013 . 1:25am

lightning_returns_ffxiii_sept_13_groupWhile Lightning is the only playable character in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, the entire cast of characters from the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy will return for the finale. Concept art confirms Serah, Mog, Caius Ballad, Yeul, and Noel from Final Fantasy X-2 will be in the game along with all of the playable characters from Final Fantasy XIII.

Noel is… different in Lightning Returns. Instead of his determined self, Noel is sullen and blames himself for the destruction of the world. Hidden away from society he is the "Shadow Hunter" and just as the Oracle Drives predicted Lightning shows up before Noel.

The two characters will fight in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Fueled with anger, Noel uses unpredictable strikes and inflicts status abnormalities.

Lightning will also run into Yeul from Final Fantasy XIII-2 who begs her to save Caius. Caius and Lightning clashed before in Valhalla, but Lightning didn’t fare so well during that fight. Caius he holds the heart of Etro, the goddess of death within him, and released the Chaos energy when Serah and Noel fought him.

Academia (left) has seen better days. This was a thriving town in Final Fantasy XIII-2, but it crumbled to ruins in Lightning Returns. Valhalla (right) can be found in a corner of the Wildlands. Followers of Etro live there. Noel the "Shadow Hunter’s" hideout is below with words written in blood and the Warren, a slum where a cult called the Children of Etro is to the right.

One of Lightning’s quests in Luxerion is to track down a serial killer. She investigates and finds flyers left by the culprit. Her investigation leads her to the Children of Etro… who come in handy and block Noel when he pursues Lightning.

Lightning has to fight Snow, Serah’s husband and ally in Final Fantasy XIII. Snow has a few tricks up his sleeve. While he still uses his fists, his fists are charged with ice and chaos power.

    Dat tailcoat…

    • Chiupon

ALL OF MY DREAMS ARE REAL

      UNF LIGHTNING

  • Go2hell66

All Noel needs is some sharingan and he’d be the perfect sasuke clone. looks like he nailed the whole emo thing

    • OathkeeperSoraXIII

How so? other than the angry attitude he has I can’t see any similarities in looks or personality.

      • Go2hell66

Both come from a village where everyone died. both use swords. similar clothes(kind of) similar hair and now their both emo…

        • OathkeeperSoraXIII

I disagree on the hair and clothes, his clothes remind me more of Terra from Birth by Sleep. The circumstances are a bit different. Sasuke’s village was murdered where as Noel’s died out. When you put it your way it’s easy to make the connection but when you look at the situations I just can’t make the connection lol. meh, opinions :P

If you thought Noel looked similar to Sasuke, I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about Noctis ;)

        • Herok♞

If you are stretching it to make that comparison work and saying that Caius was his older brother then they are still different on so many different levels, also Current Sasuke isn’t very emo for one thing.

        • zaidandzhadow

the only difference is Noel doesn’t want to be Hokage

  • LustEnvy

    I can get over Noel’s M.C. Hammer pants…ugh.

  • Suriel Cruz

The concept art is gorgeous… 1st day free poster?!… xD

  • Rogerrmark

Noel’s situation seems intriguing. Chaos liberation was mostly his and Sera’s fault indeed, even if it was inevitable and they didn’t have too much choice.

It’s interesting to see a former hero become, somewhat, antagonist like this, taken by ressentiment/despair etc.

The mix between good and evil on FFXIII games is really nice.

  • Tom

SPOILER ALERT! Damn, I should have finished FFXIII-2 by now…

    • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

why do you read a article about a game that is a sequel of the previous sequel?

      • Tom

You must be right. I’m just curious what to expect from LR:FFXIII. But I try to keep the information to the minimum. Same with FFXV, I’d like to know less until the release of the game. Sometimes trailers give away too much or I just start to fabricate my own story from the elements I see in a trailer.

        • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

I know how you feel. lately I stoped looking into new information of games that i want. they release so much information that when i’ll be able to play the game it will be like if i already played 80% of it

  • OathkeeperSoraXIII

Wow that picture of Snow down the bottom. Looks like he’s running out of time and turning into a C’ieth O_o
That cast artwork looks insane too. I love Caius’s pose and Vanille looks hot with her headdress(crown?)

There was some more details on gameplay and story here: http://www.novacrystallis.com/2013/09/this-weeks-famitsu-has-more-lightning-returns-details/

there’s spoilers so read at your own risk but it’s definitely hyping me up.
I’ll be saving Caius’s ass in the hopes that he’ll temporarily be a battle guest with me. This kinda confirms that Caius won’t be the final villain. I think it will be Muin/Mwynn from the mythos

  • KrazyBean

    *SPOILER ALERT*

Didn’t Serah, Caius and Yeul die in XIII-2? According to that concept art, they will be back in this game…WHY?!

    • Quacker

i was pretty sure caius survived. probably something about souls being taken to the end of time or something

    • Somber

it will be explained in game :)

    • Virevolte

Well, anybody can buy a phoenix down these days.

    • zeothedeathgod

look at vanille and fang in 13-2.

    • Wtv

Serah and Yeul died for the same reason…so maybe they are alive for the same reason too.

      • zaidandzhadow

Only Serah is the one who intrigues me how is alive then again we’ll be seeing kid Hope, after XIII-2 Hope was supposed to be on an adult form

    • zaidandzhadow

You better go and find those 160 crystals

  • Elemiel

Why does Christmas have a blue streak in one picture?

  • Ni ~UNREAL BLACK THINGS~

SE released a new costume trailer too
    ps: dat sexy ost

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urDHSCHU6S0

  • SeventhEvening

Wow, this is pretty wild stuff. But it is making me feel that all the stuff Serah did in XIII-2 was rather pointless. Like it is some weak bridge that connects XIII to XIII-3 (even though 2 was more fun)

    • Quacker

i appreciate the 13-2 ending way more now than i did at the time how many games finish with such a massive loss for the characters involved

      • SeventhEvening

It really is oppressive and dark all things considered. I wasn’t expecting anything like that, given how hopeful most Final Fantasy games are.

        • Quacker

Well its still a nice change of pace. no happy ends till lightning returns eh?

          • SeventhEvening

Definitely. I’ve got no idea what to expect now. XIII-2 made me like XIII better and got me interested in this next one. I’ll definitely pick it up. I’m just hoping the hundreds of costumes they’re showing off are in the game and not DLC -_-

          • Lynx

I don’t even think LR will have a happy ending.

All of this is pointing to bittersweet, at the least.

          • zaidandzhadow

It was said that you must hurry to save most of the ones to be saved and decide who to save and who to damn.

  • KingGunblader

Noel looks kind of crazy in these screens… I like it!

This is is also our first visual confirmation of Vanille, Serah, and Caius of all of people. The plot thickens!

  • XiaomuArisu

Sazh,Snow now Noel….If there was a optimistic FFXIII character,LR:FF will make them emo XD

    • Sardorim

Hope seems happy enough with Lightning back.>_>

      • XiaomuArisu

        Didnt Hope lost his emotions?

  • Göran Isacson

Ha ha oh my God if Noel is the one writing things in blood I’m just. Going to laugh until I weep that is SO MELODRAMATIC.

  • SunOatBoatMatadorQuattro

“Noel the “Shadow Hunter’s” hideout is below with words written in blood and the Warren,”
It reminds me to Sideshow Bob

    “Buy a pen, Noel.”

  • Wtv

    I still don’t understand Hope.

I know there is time travel and all, but…why would Lightning bother to get his past self and then go to the future?

  • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Treasure Hunter ♢

    *XIII-2

“Concept art confirms Serah, Mog, Caius Ballad, Yeul, and Noel from Final Fantasy X-2 will be in the game”

  • Flamboyant Ass Nigga

Snow looks like such a badass now

  • eilegz

nice hopefully they fix the plot holes and care to explain what happened, example why hope its a child again, how could caius and yeul survived they suppose to be death…

    • RoxasTheUnknown1

Caius’ physical body is dead. He lives on through a body/bodies made from Chaos. Yeul was reborn…….again.

    • zaidandzhadow

Seeress are bound to be reborn again and again, Caius just get the 160 crystals and watch the ending

  • DyLaN

Vanille have a pretty nice…… wedding veil thing and outfit.

  • Yan Zhao

Sounds like the whole world is against Lightning for wahtever reason. This plot just gets weirder and weirder.

  • Bell

Can’t say I’m surprised about Noel. He’s been strong throughout everything that’s happened to him. He’s kept on moving forward and not looking back, hoping for a better future. I guess Serah’s death and the destruction of the world was his breaking point. Unfortunately, people will fail to recognize the character development and most likely label him as ‘emo.’ That word gets thrown around a lot in places it doesn’t belong.

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Similarities to FFXIII & Tales of Xillia.
    - Tales of Xillia and Final Fantasy XIII are both the thirteenth installment of their series! (we knew that for a while)
    - In the games there is a character who’s objective is kinda difficult to categorize is called Gaius/Caius. (good/bad/neutral)
    - Both heroes of the thirteenth installment are a bit indecisive about him, but overcome it in the end.
    - They see Gaius/Caius as “someone to look up to”/ “as a friend”
    - Noel and Jude also have (as you can see) the exact same numbers of letters.
    - Both games have a sequel which uses a “time traveling/shifting” theme.
    - Also they are both about a God/Goddess which needs to be protected in a way, and uses a vessel for his/her own accord to fight against “fate”. (Milla Maxwell and Lightning)
    - Both games were kinda rushed, while Xillia had to be the 15th anniversary title, Square Enix didn’t want to delay the release of XIII further.
    - XIII-2 is basically the first Final Fantasy where the player is able to get different costumes and accessories, which is common in all Tales games. But editing them to such a degree was also a new feature in Xillia.
    - They have a different ” enemy surprise attack mechanic” than in the previous games of the series.
    - XIII and Xillia also share a similar leveling system which is similar
to the sphere grid from X (FF10), but in Xillia it’s without level
    restrictions.
    - And the both use a slightly altered battle system, which is much more similar to older games of the series. DR-LMBS sideview in Xillia (instead of the precise SS-LMBS overhead view from Graces) and for XIII a variant version of the ATB system from older FF titles.
    - Both follow-up titles use yet another upgraded version of it.
    - Plus both second games of either Xillia and XIII-2 re-use some of the places and models from the first games (some are slightly altered) as well as the same engine.
    - While Xillia 2 and XIII-2 still feature some of the old cast, they can’t really be considered as the main characters anymore.
    - The sequels also feature some kind of “choice” system.
    - This leads the player to different endings, while there is only one true ending in both games.

  • zaidandzhadow

Hmmm, why are there two Serahs in the main art it completely intrigues me…

    • Chaos_Knight

No. The Serah-looking girl is a new character named Lumina.

      • zaidandzhadow

Ohh, i lived in the shadows till now, thanks, now light can return to my life.

  • Guest

That poster is missing Vanille. Is she STILL a crystal?

  • Vash bane

snow.. chaos power? ok someone tell me what happened in 2 that made this happen? I didn’t beat 1 so I didn’t even know snow married serah(or in two iono)

  • Setsu Oh

IS IT ME OR TEAM NINJA GOT HAIR RENDERING DOWN BETTER THAN (oops caps) THE company that should have it down the best?

  • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

Why is it that every time I go into a lightning return article, the first comment I see is always snarky and siomewhat delusional.

  • Somber

becuz they are dumb and love attention :P

  • Altin

It’s not the first comment that you see, it is probably the first one that you want to see.

Also, thanks for deleting the comment, Siliconera. I guess disliking a game is now a no-go. I should go and prepare a swastika for you.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

There’s a difference between commenting on the actual article to blind hate. If you have nothing to say beside that and unable to explain it then click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhkNLHictW8

Seriously though if you don’t like the game then put some effort in explaining why you don’t like it and at least make it somewhat related to the article. I’ll like your comment just because I suppose it makes you feel a bit better about your comment being deleted.

“it is probably the first one that you want to see.”
Wrong, I want to see any comment as long as it constructive and insightful.

  • Altin

I will make sure to write a big wall of text next time. Also, it wasn’t as hateful as another guys post which is also directly pointing out at peoples intelligence. I neither called the fans of this game attention-seeking nor stupid but my comment gets deleted of course. Simple reason as to why I am not really willing to write a whole novel for that “I am glad that this part of the “pimple” ends soon” situation.

In a nutshell: Unintuitive combat system, subpar story and unlikeable characters for me. Skill Customization and Details for the world itself took a turn for the worse, DLC has now become the cool thing and every aspect which made one of the games very deep and actually detailed in terms of gameplay is hiding behind the wall of “realistic graphics!”.

If you dont like why I am not a fan of this entry, you might as well turn into a brick wall – I am not here to exceed your or any others expectations as to why I am not fond of this game. I am not here to entertain you. If you like the game, please proceed to do so, but don’t get your jimmies rustled if there are people like me that do not like this game or consider it to be a step into the wrong direction. There are plenty of people on the web who already did that job in a very thorough and detailed manner.

And you truly are insightful with your video as well.
Better to bend than to break until you turn just as dumb as me, right?

  • http://twitter.com/#!/kaishou Kaishou

“If you dont like why I am not a fan of this entry, you might as well turn into a brick wall.”

I couldn’t less about other’s opinion on the matter. All I’m asking you is to write something constructive; negative or positive. It doesn’t have to be a wall of text. Just to make this clear, I’m not asking you to post the SAME thing every time but if you have nothing better to say other than the generic “can’t wait for this to end…” kind of comment then just don’t comment at all.

“but don’t get your jimmies rustled if there are people like me that do not like this game or consider it to be a step into the wrong direction.”

If you don’t like it then you don’t like it. Simple but again those sort of comment without any context will obviously be questioned.

“There are plenty of people on the web who already did that job in a very thorough and detailed manner.”

I hope you’re not suggesting me to look at a review and assume you have the exact same opinion as some random reviewer.

“And you truly are insightful with your video as well.
Better to bend than to break until you turn just as dumb as me, right?”

Insightful indeed, I couldn’t say it any better. I’m going to stop here, I need to go back to playing MGS2

  • Altin

It’s nice to see that you were quoting every line of text that I just wrote except for the part that you cared about.

“…but if you have nothing better to say other than the generic “can’t wait for this to end…” kind of comment then just don’t comment at all.”

Two Words for you right here: First Amendment.
I can use my freedom of speech to comment on whatever I want to without anyone trying to censor my sh*t. Naturally, I restrain from harming other people with my opinion which, unlike someone else, I did in that comment. There was no offense on that one, or I might have slept during the time it was forbidden to post a picture with an African American kid. Either that or I just was lucky that one mod suffered from a severe case of Rustled Jimmies, just because I didn’t like his game.

As I mentioned, I dont have to justify my opinion to a game, but yet again, as you mention someone will ask me out on why I did not write a love poem as to why I hate given game.

Never suggested any kind of “review” for you to watch. Some of these modern “reviewers” can meet me on the moon and bite me hard. I was referring to other people that don’t proclaim themselves as professional “journalists” or “reviewers with attitude”.
